Wasn't it better when you would just watch it at 8 years old, think "man, that's fucked up" and not need legal disclaimers? I want to say we're a nation of pussies, but we raised them.
How is this being a pussy? As we age, we learn, grow and adapt and hopefully find empathy for others throughout life. It's called being an adult. Just because some corporation want to put up a legal disclaimer doesn't make it wrong.
There was a time people could process satire without being offended, crying or ripping down statues. Now that I think about it, 98% of the population still can, but we're coddling the weak minded.
The content being warned about isn't satire and was never meant to be satire. It reflects a different generation's norms. Today's norm is increasingly to point out that previous norms were harmful by today's standards so we can avoid perpetuating those harms. While I agree it is frustrating that such a warning is needed and people should intuitively know what's not ok, the fact that we're having this discussion is evidence that not everyone agrees what's ok.
It's a disclaimer for people of a different generation, they didn't edit or sensor it.. the explicitly state it's unchanged.. you're complaining about a disclaimer that's not even aimed at our generation. How is that not looking to be coddled?
Preferable to censoring. Disney+ has a disclaimer similar to that before episodes of Duck Tales.
Thinking about episodes of Tom & Jerry and characters like Pepe Le Pew and Speedy Gonzalez, interesting look into society at the time.
Totally agreed. Back then, not one single kid I knew who watched those cartoons nor their parents ever saw that as anything other than satire. It had the ick then, same as it does now, which we inherently understood. It was supposed to be offensive, and quite honestly taught a lot of us about what sexual harassment actually looks like, as well as the problem with not taking no for an answer. It had value. My teenager watched some of those when we could catch them being aired on some channel or another, and understood the messages in the exact same way. Hence, while I can see the need for the disclaimer, it's really only going to be meant for a subset of the population that absolutely refuses to get those principles through their heads. I think it does say something about the inability of a lot of people today to staunchly and willingly refuse to look through other lenses; it takes some work to think that the cartoon was actually promoting that kind of behavior instead of pointing out just how fucked up it was regardless of time period.
Yet, here we are.
