horiami@reddit
it's well made enough that even if you are an objectivist you can enjoy the game
deepstatecuck@reddit
When politics is an aesthetic or a theme, it can fun. When politics is the point and the game condescends to sermonize at the player, its slop.
garbotheanonymous@reddit
What? Politics is not a painting you hang on the wall lol
deepstatecuck@reddit
Politics is an aesthetic decision and I'm tired of pretending it isn't.
EvaUnit_03@reddit
Thats why people like games like DnD. Where you can just be a senseless murder hobo. And every political situation can be boiled down to 'what if we kill both sides and take all their loot?'
Siriann@reddit
You’re forgetting that murderhobos are generally looked down upon and disliked by other players. They also tend to be huge losers irl, as far as I’ve seen.
notorious-P-I-V@reddit
In tabletop RPGs like DnD sure but in CRPGs they’re fairly common and popular. Most people I know who play have tried to violence their way through Skyrim, New Vegas, and the like.
Petes-meats@reddit
This kind of attitude is what makes so many games with politics insufferable now
garbotheanonymous@reddit
When you were a child you just didn't see it beating you over the head with it. Unless you're referring to mario bros or duckhunt or something.
EvaUnit_03@reddit
Are you implying that duck hunt, a game about a dog who claims to be a hunting partner will simultaneously laugh at your failed attempts, is non-political???
The game brings into question whether duck hunting is a legitimate sport, while also showing a non-conservationist viewpoint because you, as the hunter, mercilessly hunt these ducks and if you fail, you are humiliated for your failure. It hits the hammer on the head and makes you question animal rights and environmental protections.
And dont get me started about the brutality that was the original super Mario bros. Aside from the obvious siblicide, they mercilessly kill creatures with zero regard that are in a living situation that we, humans, put them in! And do it all for money, that they willfully try to cheat eachother out of. So much for sibling love.
Everything can be made political. Thats literally what liberal arts degrees teach you, as long as you are okay with being insufferable and hated.
AuxiliarySimian@reddit
Idk crusader kings is pretty fun.
Boxing_joshing111@reddit
This game never felt fun to just shoot in and the level design was too simple, this game almost felt like if Firewatch had some shooting. Cool aesthetic though.
hh26@reddit
If you were just shooting you were doing it wrong. What it lacks in mechanical nuance it makes up for by shooting bees out of your hands.
oby100@reddit
The simplicity of the message lets the rest of the game breathe. Complicating the message too much leads to endless dialogue. It’s still a game and that needs always to be the focus
M474D0R@reddit
The message isn't even "objectivism bad" either if you actually pay attention to it.
The villain gains power because Andrew Ryan BANNED religion, he makes money smuggling bibles and eventually starts an insurrection. Andrew Ryan isn't truly committed to his ideals of freedom.
LordMimsyPorpington@reddit
Because there is no such thing as a "free" society. The point of the game is that if you let people act without any rules or oversight, then society devolves into little fiefdoms, where the majority are exploited by the handful who control all the capital and resources. You end up with a shittier version of the thing you were trying to escape in the first place.
M474D0R@reddit
You are an example of what people talk about when they say media literacy is dead.
The main theme of the original game is the hypocrisy of ideologues, not a critique of a specific ideology. That is, if youre capable of actually absorbing anything past a surface level.
This isnt even to defend objectivism either, which is dumb enough on its own. But you really did not absorb the plot at all.

Pot calling the kettle black, right here.
mypornaccount086@reddit
Would have been more thematic if it became open ended after killing Ryan
Cygs@reddit
Stop, would you kindly
OnePastafarian@reddit
I always thought it was a little funny that it took made up magical sea slug to bring down a libertarian utopia.
horiami@reddit
tbf ryan being a hypocrite was a bigger problem and he fucked up a bunch of times
maeestro@reddit
Imagine unironically being an objectivist
GargantuanCake@reddit
Part of the point was "this is what happens when it goes too far." Every ideology can go too far and become destructive. In the case of Rapture when traditional power structures got removed new ones popped up and they weren't great.
PooInTheStreet@reddit
Mandatory note: rand died poor and on welfare. So much for objectivism
FBI_psyop@reddit
She was forced to pay tax her all life and was still paying property tax after retiring. Not the own you think when you realise that it is actually quite consistent to aggressively collect welfare after a lifetime working and being forced to contribute in a system.
Correct_Doctor_1502@reddit
She was a hedonist who wanted to rebrand it
Valuable_Pollution96@reddit
Look, she was a fucking cunt, and yeah she did explored the welfare, but she wasn't poor, she actually had a lot of money and was working on a TV adaptation of Atlas in her last years. Which makes the fact that she was on welfare even worse.
OiledUpThug@reddit
idk, seems based to me
"this shitty system will give anyone free money. Let me prove it"
DICKPICDOUG@reddit
spicoli420@reddit
That she was an ugly cunt who didn’t realize how ugly and idealistic she was. Inflated ego or something. Temporarily embarrassed billionaire mindset.
Outarel@reddit
Philosophy is cancer.
Just play the game, shoot the big daddy, save the little girl AND FOR GOD'S SAKE HAVE FUN.
Phatnoir@reddit
My main problem with my Ayn Rand collection is the books won’t open themselves.
positivelypolitical@reddit
There's a reason they're widely panned outside of conservative circles - Rand was a self-indulgent pseudo-intellectual bullshit artist and known philanderer, her content is predicably *yawn*
TheDeadlyZebra@reddit
Don't act like you wouldn't get a little rand-y in that vag-Ayn-a
RizzyMcDonk@reddit
username checks out 👍
raisingthebarofhope@reddit
Sounds like someone who's never read Rand.
enoing@reddit
I've been wanting to listen to brave new world on audible. I immediately stop myself from downloading it when I see that it's runtime is almost 68 hrs
SureExcuseMe@reddit
You can skip the monologues.
raisingthebarofhope@reddit
You might want to try The Fountainhead. Audio book is a beast too but book is more approachable and less of a commitment.
s-josten@reddit
My favorite Rand joke is "After 14 pages of monologue, the question is not 'who is John Galt' but instead 'when will John Galt shut up'."
Zeus1131@reddit
And also I don't know how to read
WaifuHunterActual@reddit
Average Rand enjoyer
Few-Frosting-4213@reddit
The problem was poor people. Ryan should have waited until they could have all been replaced by robits first.
Spiral-knight@reddit
The problem is he's an idealist who thought everyone else would just agree with his takes and never imagined a "lesser man" could get in and then be able to undermine him
outland_king@reddit
The problem was getting assumed all the menial workers would just love cleaning pipes all day for a $1, while all the scientists and technologists got fat and lazy.
The whole uprising was due to low tier people feeling disenfranchised and forgotten. They wanted more than their skill provided and felt cheated that cleaning toilets doesn't get you a mansion.
Spiral-knight@reddit
Fontaine gave them the means to become a problem. I won't deny the class issue was always going to be some kind of landmine. At the point of failure though, people where largely still just bitching about it.
The better question becomes: What was Ryan paying to lure a bunch of skilled and low-skill labor to his secret utopia adn what the fuck was he thinking regarding their long-term reality.
UberHyperKing@reddit
Isn't a librarian commune just a library?
Green__lightning@reddit
Even in universe it didn't really fail from that, but Ryan compromising his ideals to to fight Fontaine.
DICKPICDOUG@reddit
Ryans whole ideology was that a man was entitled to the sweat of his bro. Through hard-work, intelligence, and skill any man could rise as high as he dared, and claim whatever he could keep. Then when a person more competent, intelligent, charismatic, and ruthless than him comes along he throws a hissy fit and would rather blow up the entire city than give up control. Ryan NEVER believed in his ideals to begin with, he just wanted to be in charge and hated taking orders.
outland_king@reddit
Part of his problem was that Fontaine rose to power not through his own efforts, but through the exploitation of others. Ryan may have used cheap labor but he at least contributed. In his naivety, he allowed Fontaine to fester and grow, thinking nobody would fall for idealized empty promises of a basic mob boss.
Ryan assumed people to be level headed and proud, instead of the opportunitistic vultures we really are.
DICKPICDOUG@reddit
Nah dude Ryan was the scummiest scumlord on the planet, like half the logs in the game are about how restrictive and exploitative his contracts are. Dude is a mustache twirling robber baron barely a degree removed from Fontaine, Fontaine is just better at the game. Ryan is a hypocrite that flipped the table when someone learned how to play better than he could.
ScoobiSnacc@reddit
I didn’t mind the politics cause I felt Ryan overlooked common sense; Absolute Freedom is a 2 way street. By virtue of giving everyone absolute freedom, that also allows them to do whatever they want, even if it means screwing someone else over.
In Ryan’s case, his own philosophy means Fontaine had every right to make a profit with surface smuggling. Yet Ryan condemns him just because it was something he disagreed with. In the process, he became no different than all the other systems he spurned. He wasn’t a paragon of objectivism, he was just a hypocrite who wanted control, nothing more.
TL;DR: everybody gangsta until something happens to them, then suddenly they can’t take it.
Renegadeknight3@reddit
Is it possible to be an objectivist and not a hypocrite? I’ve never met one
darksidathemoon@reddit
Why didn't Andrew Ryan put himself into a life support pod and then build an army of security robots whose new OS was stored in a novelty poker chip? Is he stupid?
nitonitonii@reddit
and rule over bot-town?
Plane_Poem_5408@reddit
Damn wild FNV ref guess I need to replay for the 34th time
Particular-Zone7288@reddit
yes
original_dick_kickem@reddit
Well yeah, because a real libertarian paradise would just be Epstein Island
SlySychoGamer@reddit
OP is retarded...the game itself answers this via the mob guy.
"Everyone wanted to be one of the big wigs, but forgot SOMEBODY needs to clean the toilets, and cook the food"
The oversight and over elitist behavior is exactly what allowed the antagonist of the game to gain the power he did.
hussainhssn@reddit
Randism and objectivism are fucking retarded, we don’t need this game to know that
PM_ME_DNA@reddit
Magic slugs therefore prove it’s wrong?
AlchemyAled@reddit
Humanity could be a Randian utopia if we just ignored all the humans
VehaMeursault@reddit
If you genuinely consider objectivism valid or Rand’s prose good, you need to back to middle school.
mrmiffmiff@reddit
Everyone wants to be the artist unbound by the censor or the scientist unbound by "petty morality", but nobody wants to do the manual labor, or think about the people that still must.
Fayraz8729@reddit
I mean the main Achilles heel of Rapture was that plasmids use little girls harvested after very specific circumstances. Now while a government would 100% still exploit it because Rapture didn’t restrict it. The rate was completely unsustainable so then the geese that lay these golden egg got a mind slave juggernaut to keep them from being murdered and THEN it went tits up with superpower drug addicts, mutant children and their guardians, a guy who made a homunculus to do his bidding, a mad doctor with flesh manipulation power and at the top a loser billionaire who realizes he has an empire of dirt now
Anarcho-capitalism didn’t doom rapture, it just made sure it could never be saved due to the exploitation to resources disparity, so would you kindly consider that in a bioshock 1 analysis
MJisaFraud@reddit
Only 14 year olds that just read Atlas Shrugged think objectivism is a legitimate philosophy.
