The Howell Model of 1915 is an early self-loading rifle based on the British Lee-Enfield. The rifle works on a simple yet reliable operating principle, with a gas piston on right hand side of the barrel that pushes back on a cam that works to cycle the bolt automatically. The Howell feeds from a detachable magazine capable of holding 20 rounds of .303 British. A crude pistol grip and finger guard were added to the rifle to protect the operators hands while the bolt is cycling. The Howell saw limited service during WWI and even saw some use during WWII in an anti-aircraft role by the British Home Guard.
