Corporate subsidies should be ban and we should have a real free market. A lot of companies probably wouldn’t be around without government intervention lol
shabamsauce@reddit
I don’t think you’re wrong, but China is a threat, we are over reliant on TSMC, and we can’t fabricate the chips that we need here in the U.S. What is the answer here?
Creepy-Fig929@reddit
China isn’t a threat to anyone in America. They didn’t force American businesses to become dependent on their cheap Labor
shabamsauce@reddit
Sure and I didn’t do that either, so what do we do now?
WinterYak1933@reddit
Just as a tech professional I say this is a horrible idea.
FlapjackFez@reddit
The government intervening in the economy, what could go wrong?
Anal_Forklift@reddit
This is cringe. Is basically a preemptive bailout just like back in 08-09 with the auto industry.
Free Enterprise is under attack from both the left and right in this country. The days of Republicans being the free market/business party are over .

Trump getting his playbook from communist China 💀

Libertarianism is a political philosophy that emphasizes maximizing individual liberty and minimizing government intervention in both personal and economic matters.

Hold on there is a lot going on here. Biden used the CHIPS act as a centerpiece in what he has done to improve our economy at one point. Biden's dog and pony show made it sound like he was opening new semiconductor markets for America, the reality is this went to well established company, Intel.
https://newsroom.intel.com/corporate/intel-chips-act "...Intel, Biden-Harris Administration Finalize $7.86 Billion Funding Award Under US CHIPS Act..The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded Intel up to $7.86 billion in direct funding through the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act to advance Intel’s commercial semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging projects in Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio and Oregon. This direct funding is in addition to the $3 billion contract awarded to Intel for the Secure Enclave program that is designed to expand trusted manufacturing of leading-edge semiconductors for the U.S. government. Today’s award, coupled with a 25% investment tax credit, will support Intel’s plans to invest more than $100 billion in the U.S. As previously announced, Intel’s planned U.S. investments, including projects beyond those supported by CHIPS, support more than 10,000 company jobs, nearly 20,000 construction jobs, and more than 50,000 indirect jobs with suppliers and supporting industries..."
This is very much a Libertarian talking point. If the government can stick to protecting our borders and freedom of speech. They have no business in meddling in free enterprise.
A 100 billion American Tax dollars are committed to a successful business to incentivize what exactly. How would this have created a semiconductor market in America? It seems like we were paying for an American Company to bring manufacturing back to America.
And now we are discussing taking over the entire company because the CEO has ties to Chinese companies. What law exactly would that be breaking. A private citizen can invest their money in all kinds of foreign investments. Outside of tax ramifications with a few exception that is all very legal.
Biden was wrong and Trump is wrong. Do we have no leadership in this country on either side? Oh side note... you all should look at the cutbacks Intel did within the year they got their first injection of almost 8 billion American Tax dollars. Intel is not the good guy either. As a matter of fact there are only losers. The biggest one is the American People.

Government interference is essential to help achieve libertarian goals, you say. I have to admit you have a point. Government isn’t always bad.
monet108@reddit
I think the Government sometimes needs to step in. Not often. But when they do step in, it has to be to the benefit of the largest number of American citizens as possible. Biden gave American Tax dollars to a super successful company with the hope of a return. That is not so grossly negligent, that is must be viewed as a scheme to steal American resources and not just a mistake.
And Trump attempting to seize a company is a gross over reach that we can not allow. If that is allowed , what are we. Clearly a violation can be created, on the spot, to justify taking what is yours.

Government is always bad when it aggresses.
