Yeah, the mixes are about worthless unless you want to listen to the same handful of songs. But the general front page or sidebar recommendations can have some gems. Or they used to, it's gradually getting crowded out with AI-generated content.

I actually have separate YouTube accounts for different purposes, one general purpose watching channel (stuff like SciShow, Aging Wheels, Lazy Game Reviews, etc), one that's for music videos, etc. You can make the algorithm work for you if you choose. If I want to watch a video without it influencing my algorithm, I just watch it in a private/incognito window (or just delete it from my watch history afterwards).

The type of content I watch most lol....the gals who do the throwback videos of what life was like in the '00s and '10s, although admittedly they're more millennial than xennial, but the nostalgia hits the same (mostly the fashion....), a guy who's obsessed with his lawn (I don't even have a yard, why am I watching these videos so intently?!), a woman who posts about living with boomer parents (so real, so relatable....)

I’m a xennial (1977) and this history proves it because I’ve got my own hobbies but also have a 5year old who co-opts my YouTube algorithm. I chose to go to school and get graduate degree rather than than have kids early, so now I’m nearing 50 and can afford my own hobbies but also have a young kid that it’s often hard to keep up with.

Reaction videos of people watching movies I watched as a kid. I also watch horror gameplay, vids with a lot of cursing, and I try to avoid vids that are specifically for kids. Doesn't seem like I've been hit yet with the age restriction yet. My account should technically put me at least 20 years old if I'd started my account as a newborn in 2005. I should be okay. I made sure to default my vids as "not for kids." Hopefully the AI thinks all that is enough.

It’s pretty lame, but one of the first YouTube videos I watched was a play-through of Simon’s Quest: Castlevania 2 for the NES. I spent YEARS trying to beat that game and never got anywhere (not a strong gamer). But I was finally able to see the ending of the game. Then I did it again and watched Link 2 lol (another game I could never beat).
