If I'm using an external A-drive, am I wrong to assume any problem is in the floppy?

If I'm ever in a situation where a floppy disk doesn't open when I use an external A-drive, I always assume the problem is in the floppy. But in general, floppies have lasted a long time for me, and when I recently had several files that refused to open on different floppies, I was suddenly wondering if maybe my assumption is wrong.
Could it be the fault of the external drive or the laptop itself?

For a USB floppy the operating system needs to have its USB stack running but other then that it should just work.

You need to provide a lot more details. What OS? Is this a USB floppy?
It can always be a faulty disk.
