Advice in travelling to Peru and also staying on a budget

Hello, so I have surprised my brother and mom with flight tickets to Peru (not really I just promised to buy them, haven’t purchased yet) but I do not have much of an idea of what to do yet. I think the rough idea would be to fly down to Lima, catch a flight to Cusco (didn’t account for this flight cuz im dumb but glad to see theyre cheap) to stay there for a few days and visit Machu Picchu. Also, when looking online I get very mixed answers to whether a tour guide is required in Machu Picchu. I would rather not, but do you guys recommend getting one if it isn’t required? If it is then I will whether I want to or not, no biggie. After being in Cusco and Macchu Picchu for 3-5 days I’d like to head back to Lima. I’ve read on reddit that everyone seems to love Miraflores and reccomends it as the place to stay in Lima. Any recommendations for anything would be very helpful especially in trying to keep the cost low on this trip, but I know it’ll be somewhat expensive. Lima is not at all required in the trip but the point of the trip is to head to Machu Picchu, as it was my Dad’s favorite archaeological site and site in general, but he never got to go before he passed due to money and time restraints. All help is much appreciated. Oh and I would be down for a decent hike but not sure about a multi-day hike to Machu Picchu, though I will consider it if anyone else reccomends it! Thanks a lot!

When are you planning on traveling there? In case you haven't heard, there is a lot of political instability in Peru right now after they ousted their president in December. I would recommend following the news on it and letting things settle down before you commit to a trip.

Fuckkk i haven’t even heard. Anyways I have not yet committed to a certain date, so I would wait years if I have to, not a big deal. I would like to go sometime later this year but if this prevents it ill just delay it

Yeah, I work for a school in Cusco, and things are rough right now. A police officer was set on fire yesterday, and now police are retaliating. A state of emergency was declared before Christmas, and it looks like it would be reinstated soon. That would mean you can't go outside the house or you might be arrested. Cusco is a magical place, but political instability is making it less magical.

What's the situation like there now, in Peru in general I mean? I went to Urubamba a few years ago to do ayahuasca and thinking of going again, but if it's genuinely dangerous I'll look at other places.

this thread is from two years ago. Now the country is fine.

How much is yours daily’s budget for the Peru?
joey_cel@reddit (OP)
Honestly not sure at all, could do anywhere from $200-300usd a day because we wont be there very long, i think that is enough?

Did you end up going? I am heading there in a few weeks. Civil unrest has quieted and many locals have advised its safe and clear.

No we decided not to this year, we are going to try next year though. That’s really good to hear though, hope you have a good time there!
