Why is it that muslim minorities (like Gorani, Torbesh, Bosniaks, Pomaks) in the Balkans spend more time and invest in their villages but christian ones (like Serbs, Bulgarians, Macedonians) don't?

Even tho a lot of people in both groups live in Western Europe the Christian ones don't invest or even want to spend time or return to their villages

Who the hell are you calling a minority
No-Resolve6160@reddit
I was asking the same thing. The guy erased pur land on a sentence lol Wiredos bro weirdos
Gladius_Bosnae_Sum@reddit
I still have no idea where the 23% nonsense is from, considering we inhabit the majority of the urban centers and are the largest land owners in our own country where we are the majority. Wild.
cybran3@reddit
There’s barely 2 mil Muslims in Bosnia, and they even have the lowest amount of territory in Bosnia as well.
Gladius_Bosnae_Sum@reddit
Bosniaks constitute a majority of the people in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Ditto for Kosovars and Kosovo. The "amount of territory" is an absurd and inaccurate argument.
TungstenLungPolyp@reddit
Aren’t they still the majority?
BloodStarvedLeopard@reddit
Bosniak minority? The fuck?

Well first off, differentiating between Torbesh and Macedonians isn’t correct, as Torbesh are a subgroup of Macedonians and they shouldn’t be treated like foreigners in their own country.
Secondly, as someone from the Rostuse region, lots of Macedonian Muslims here have emigrated abroad, specifically Italy, while Christians to Skopje. The ones living abroad obviously have much deeper pockets, so the remittances they send back to their families and villages are much heftier, hence the villages are better up-kept.

It’s probably mainly due to the fact that those are very small minorities, only the Bosniaks have a significant population, therefore your observations are distorted.
For example you see 100 Christian villages and 60 of them are invested in heavily and look nice but you also see 60 Muslim villages and 40 of them are invested in heavily. Human nature will make you notice the 40 Muslim villages but not the 60 Christian villages.

Muslim villages in Bosnia and Herzegovina are often in better condition than the Orthodox ones aswell
Prolly not better than the Catholic villages. But he's from Bulgaria so they don't really have many of those.

I’ll speak for Gorani people (because I have some friends that are Gorani) - their villages in Gora are almost empty throughout the year. However, in summer their large diaspora gathers there and stay for a few weeks/months. And I was surprised to see their “villages” have cafes, restaurants, etc. They really invest into their community, I guess as a way to protect it from foreign influences (we’ve seen complains from Gorani that almost everyone wants to assimilate them, they are not so found of Kosovo authorities).
Why do they renovate their villages? Because it’s the only home they have. Gora is their territory, a place that every single one of them can call home.
Meanwhile us Serbs rarely come back to our villages because we are a large nation that has somewhat lost sense of regional community. Both locals and diaspora tend to move to Belgrade or some other big cities near their village (Nis, Novi Sad, etc.).

It's almost the same in Bulgaria.
Fortunately there is a new tendency for people to move to villages. But unfortunately they don't tend to that in the villages in the fields but rather the mountains or near bigger cities
red-panda-returns@reddit
In macedonia i've seen the opposite but done by goverment. While they heavely invest in christian majority areas, the muslim minoritys are being neglected very hard... and i'm not gonna go deeper into other opressions they do on goverment level.
Former_Bake4025@reddit
Hmm? I don’t understand the question. Many Christian’s go back to their villages.
JackfruitNo6175@reddit (OP)
They don't care as much. They don't renovate their houses, go for holidays or even visit. The villages are very deserted
_-Event-Horizon-_@reddit
Have you been to a village?
JackfruitNo6175@reddit (OP)
Yes and i have 2 houses in different areas

Maybe more family oriented culture with village life.

seems to be a religious thing

I'd suggest you go and visit your regular Muslim country and be prepared for the clean streets. It is 100% cultural.
vbd71@reddit
Yeah, there are no mosques in West Europe.

Their heartland is those villages, unlike other nations they are small in numbers.
My pal who is Gorani by origin but identifies as Serb visits his village regularly. I on the other hand have visited ny place of birth three times after the war, and birthplace of my grand grandfather only once in life (ita an hour drive from me)

This is going to be completely anecdotal and something I’ve heard second hand, but I remember being told that there’s a place where there’s a Christian and Muslim community are right next to each other in Thrace with an old Roman road between them. My friend was complaining that the road in the Christian village was completely in disrepair and overlooked, but then he praised the Muslims for preserving the road and taking care of it.
My speculation would be two fold, and I’d love to be corrected by someone more familiar. My expectation is that on one hand Greek villages in western Thrace received a lot more state support until recently and this may inspired a more localist and self sufficient mentality in the local community. That or it’s generally easier for Christian Greek communities to integrate into the major metropolitan areas of Athens and Thessaloniki of which we’ve seen essentially desertion of villages for over the decades, or to just leave the country entirely. This again could raise the value of preserving and investing locally over just leaving for better prospects.

That's true. I come from an area where we worked abroad hundreds of years ago (na Pecalba) and everyone has returned. We are just very connected to the homeland. The Christians in the Balkans are also outside but not like us. Maybe it's because we are mountain peoples and they are very close to their homeland no matter where they come from. There is an old saying with us Torbes/Gorani/Pomaken= We return, whether horizontally or vertically.
