Honda civic. Be 16, do some dumb things and harmless mods to it if you feel like it, because should live a little. Have a reliable and efficient car.

This is always my answer for first cars. Just get a civic lol

Default answer especially for people who aren't super into cars. If you need a reliable vehicle to get you around and can be relatively fun, that is your choice. In college or anywhere else you're really going to rely on the dependency and the bills that come with different cars are not an added benefit when you have zero income.

Civics are not reliable.
Fading clearcoats, dogshit infotainments, terrible material quality.......

100%. Civics are cheap to fix and maintain too

I would suggest a decently-used Renault or Opel.
I'm also 16 and I got more Opels than the entire car collections of Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion combined.

Once you find a car that you intend to buy, tell the seller that you want to have a Pre Purchase Inspection done on the car. It would be at your cost and effort, but a PPI is very important when buying a used car without any knowledge of the car’ past. Even if the seller tries to tell you when they’ve done. And maybe even if they have a lot of service receipts to show you.

Have someone you trust inspect your choice for rust if you’re in PA.
