Anyone recognise this?

I got this from my grandmother's house when she passed as a memento I thought it was cool because it was an axe and I was a teenager. In reality it's kitchenware, as evident from the back head that has the meat pounding spikes. Probably made in the 80s.
I've always wondered about the word on the side (1st picture). We're Greek and it doesn't make sense in Greek, no googlable villages at least. I am assuming it's the name of the place where it was made in (maybe Bulgaria?). Maybe it commemorates something that happened in 1371(2nd picture) in that place?
Any ideas?

It is "Калуга" (Kaluga) - a city in Russia.
On the fourth picture you can also see "Ц 4р" which means "Цена 4 рубля" and translates as "Price [equals] 4 rubles"

Hoooly that was fast. Thanks dude. It somehow ended up in Athens, Greece

From Bulgaria. I have one in Romania. Also from Bulgaria.
reverber@reddit
In Bulgaria, the price (ц) would be in л, no?
That said, this could have been sold in BG at some time.
YngwieMainstream@reddit
I'm not saying it is Bulgarian, I'm saying they got it from Bulgaria, probably with those Nintendo Game & Watch knock-offs - the hottest item USSR produced.
keepod_keepod@reddit
You are welcome:)
The thing looks to me like something from Soviet era btw.

Would you happen to know at which point in time something like this would cost 4 rubles? That's like, 5 cents of the euro today.
42not34@reddit
4 rubles were the equivalent of about 40 lei, which in that time in Romania would get you about 13 packs of Carpați filterless cigarettes, or 5 packs of Amiral cigarettes (with filter)
vaniot2@reddit (OP)
Filter diff lol
42not34@reddit
More than that, there were levels of quality in cigarettes. The cheapest I remember from the communist times were Carpați filterless at 3.25 lei per pack, the most expensive you could usually find were Golf with filter at around 27 (both Romanian brands). Carpați with filter were 3.75 per pack. Kent was the "doctor's cigarette", sold for 100 lei on the black market.

Hah! Price makes sense. Mine has sentimental value though and you can't put a price on that.
keepod_keepod@reddit
OK, here's what I found.
This kitchen axe was most likely produced in 1971 (600 years anniversary since 1371).
In 1971 you could buy approximately two kilos of beef for four rubles in Kaluga (not sure about this part).

Nice info!! Today was a satisfying day!

After the fall of the USSR many people emigrated to other countries such as Greece. Many of them in order to make some money sold whatever they had/didn't need to make some money. My father has a soviet ruler and a toy artillery cannon. I think it was mandatory for the price to be on the item that was sold.

One of my great grandparents came from Pontus. He was from the other side of the family though than the grandma who had the axe. It's not impossible that it somehow got gifted to her at some point I suppose.

On Belgrade coat of arms there is Roman trireme, but this may be some Rus or Viking boat? But yeah, on first looks it seems similar.
Unable-Stay-6478@reddit
I'm not sure about that... I'm from Belgrade, if you're refering to Belgrade coat of arms.
keepod_keepod@reddit
Yes, it reminds me of the Belgrade coat of arms. I also live in Belgrade:)

This is amazing I need one .. in Western society today: best we can do is OXO brand piece of plastic
vaniot2@reddit (OP)
I think it's cast iron. It looks to all be one piece. It's not too heavy so I'm assuming there's something cheaper than steel in there
_barbarossa@reddit
If it’s iron it should be very heavy. Top heavy though?
vaniot2@reddit (OP)
It's top heavy yeah but you can feel it's not iron. It doesn't feel as solid. I'm assuming a mix with something cheaper and lighter, not sure how ironworking.. well.. works xD
YngwieMainstream@reddit
The handle is aluminum.
YngwieMainstream@reddit
It's trash. You don't need it. Very light. And the blade is no good against bones and such. I use mine with the other end to tenderize beef schnitzels:))
DenisWestVS@reddit
The Soviet time Suveniur .
Price is 4 rubles
Temporary-Ice751@reddit
Bad casting, not good quality
vaniot2@reddit (OP)
Yeah it definitely isn't expensive, more of a sentimental value thing.
YngwieMainstream@reddit
The Romanian one is way better. Unfortunately I wrecked mine while cutting a Christmas tree, lol.

Happy cake day, also I think you could find more info in specific subs about old "artifacts" since another person said it originates from the ussr maybe you should try asking for more info in r/ussr
ZapruderFilmBuff@reddit
There are few ussr people there. Most are Americans and western Europeans saying for Stalin was a genius and communism is great.
ByzantineCat0@reddit
HAHAHAH 🤣 true, my mom was from the Soviet union and I have a bunch of stuff from there, they love explaining how something they never had the chance to experience is perfect
ZapruderFilmBuff@reddit
Annoys the shit out of me.
vaniot2@reddit (OP)
Might as well
yoshimutso@reddit
I've got the similar one with exactly the same shape but different writings and symbols. Mine was to commemorate some trade exhibition or something. It's basically a kind of souvenir.
