This is the news I've been waiting for. I think a true Amiga fpga would be somewhat affordable look cool and have the ability to run other cores.

16 and 32bit as the Amiga did evolve past the Motorola 68000 just like the FM Towns evolved past the original 386sx model. Those looking for a recreation would want to recreate the beefier Amigas like the Amiga 4000 in terms of specs as you can easily get them to be compatible with the earlier 500.

FM Towns always had a 32 bit CPU.
386 -> 486 -> Pentium
The 68000 is a 16/32-bit design. 68020 is fully 32-bit.
Psy1@reddit
FM Towns started with a 386sx

Which is also a 32-bit processor. Calling it a 16-bit processor would be the same as calling the 8088 an 8-bit processor.

Most people go by measuring the bus thus why the Sega Genesis calls itself a 16-bit machine instead of 32-bit.

Oh fuck

Here we go again with the Commodore fan boys and girls.
IMHO, nothing they can ever sell you deserves the brand. Why shell out $300 for a 43 year old chipset beaten into modern silicon when you can just hop on eBay and get a real c64 for $50? And it'll be as real as real gets, because it's a real c64!
pmodizzle@reddit
Look, I prefer real hardware as I’m sure many on this sub do, and I’m not into buying these modern reproductions, but I can understand it. Even to your point about the C64, I feel like the Amiga is a different beast in that regard.
The amiga is significantly more complicated, more proprietary chips that can fail and can’t be replaced without taking off another board. Systems are more rare, more expensive. Capacitors and batteries which not only need to be replaced but could have left substantial and irreversible damage in their place. I could see the desire for a modern one.
hawkenhiemer@reddit
You're right especially given how much more expensive the Amigas are these days
SirTwitchALot@reddit
Why do people spend thousands of dollars restoring old cars when they can get a new one that's much more reliable for less? It's just a fun hobby some people have and it doesn't have to be practical
hawkenhiemer@reddit
I think you missed the point. It's paying 500% more for a modern "reproduction" of an Oldsmobile, that will never be a real Oldsmobile, when you can get the real thing for 500% less.
I got my c64 for free. I rebuilt the power supply myself. https://old.reddit.com/r/c64/comments/1kh0rhy/just_finished_rebuilt_c64_power_supply/

Those older computers are getting rarer every day, and they need maintenance to get working properly.
I'm not against making a new version of the commodore 64 which is better and has more modern features, like a retroPI system or something similar
mechanab@reddit
If your purpose is hardware collecting, restoration and troubleshooting, then you are right. If your purpose is to experience vintage software and some hardware without having to recap you motherboard or fix a failing space bar, or deal with a faulty power supply, then this might be a better choice.

I love the Amiga name, it sounds so joyous.
takeyouraxeandhack@reddit
It means (female) friend :)

A certain "skunk" just punched his fist into the air.

High-school side-gig was creating text visuals using a Video Toaster for a wedding video company. Made so many shiny spinning logos using Lightwave3D. This was all on an Amiga 4000.
We chuckled when a colleague installed Windows 95 and boasted about the “Buddy Holly” video that came on the install CD.
Oh, what could have been.
Domukin@reddit
I’d love to use an amiga, never had the chance growing up

Wow, a positive take on the matter, refreshing..
