5800XT or 5700X3D?

on amazon 5700X3D is 218 GBP, with no cooler. So I'd have to buy a peerless assassin 120 FE which is an additional 30, bringing my total to around 240 GBP.
5800XT is 165 GBP and comes with a cooler.
i don't have a job and dont wanna spend too much, im pairing the already existing 2080S with one of thesse cpus. Don't want to upgrade to AM5 as I would need around 500, but I only have a budget of 200.
i play 1080p 144hz, comp games and some triple a titles.
what do u think?
ICastCats@reddit
….So what’s your current GPU?
Because a 9700K is just fine with a basic GPU, and works with W11.

ICastCats@reddit
Seems fine to me. What aspects do you feel it’s not keeping up? What resolution you on?
SmoothChemistry8564@reddit (OP)
1080p. my valorant frames are very inconsistent. its definitely not bloatware since ive tweaked my pc and fortnite is genuienly unplayable. On my R5 3600 i could get maybe 350 fps at the max it would drop to 180, but now on the 9700k it's very stuttery, fps drops and it can sit at 200 FPS but just be a bad experience.
not the most happiest with CPU bound games.
ICastCats@reddit
Ah that makes sense. I wouldn’t go the 5700X3D over getting a 7600X + DDR5
But since you have an AM4 board, I actually think a second hand 5600/X is going to be the ticket. Should be under $100 pretty easy (used to be $60 on a 5600)
SmoothChemistry8564@reddit (OP)
id have to upgrade to AM5 then, and thats an extra 300 i gotta spend out my own pocket on top of what i make off the GPU's.
would rather spend minimum now and then in a few years do an upgrade to am6 or 5
ICastCats@reddit
Second hand 5600X is like $80 then.
frodan2348@reddit
5700x should be much cheaper than both and is more than powerful enough for a 2080S. For context, I run it with my 4070S (at 1440p to be fair) and have zero cpu performance issues or bottlenecking, and your 2080S is roughly a 3070ti in terms of performance.
SmoothChemistry8564@reddit (OP)
wouldnt the 5700x be a sidegrade/slight upgrade vs my 9700k? im on 1080p so i guess that matters more
what would u recommend?
frodan2348@reddit
The 5700x is about 15-18% faster in single-core performance than the 9700X.
If you were starting fresh and didn’t have any parts to reuse, i wouldn’t suggest it, but since you have the am4 platform lying around, it’s a super cheap way to alleviate any limitation you might have with the 9700K. That said, unless you’re having gpu utilization issues in games (where gpu usage isn’t 95% or higher in most scenarios), you’re not going to see much benefit from ANY cpu.
9okm@reddit
Sell the old GPUs immediately. They’re only depreciating further and further each day. Get the 5700X3D. For gaming, it will last a lot longer than the 5800XT.
SmoothChemistry8564@reddit (OP)
Yep i'll get to selling next week. I think it will be a good upgrade but also I get anxious when it comes to this stuff because i'm 17 and like my family sometimes monitor what i buy LMAO but my mom said it was fine if i just sell my stuff sooooo
AM5 seems to be out the picture beacuse on top of what I make off the GPUs, I'd have to spend 300 out my own pocket for the whole platform upgrade so its for sure just a 5700x3d upgrade.
In your opinion, you think 5700X3D is 60GBP better than the 5800xt? will it really make a difference?
9okm@reddit
Since you already have an AM4 board, yeah 5700X3D makes the most sense. One consideration though - do you know if it has an up to date BIOS and/or flashback? Because if it doesn't have flashback and doesn't have the BIOS needed for the 5700X3D (or 5800XT for that matter), you'll need an older CPU installed to update it.
Yes the 5700X3D will definitely make a difference over a 5800XT. Look at comparison videos. You don't need to use these exact CPUs. Something like a 5800X3D vs 5700X would also show roughly the same relative difference. Particularly in competitive games at 1080p, the difference is huge. Fortite, Rainbow 6, Valorant, CS2, etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDctG4tPQ2w
BaronB@reddit
The 5700X3D is about 30% faster than the 5800XT for gaming. And the 5800XT is already going to be about
And while the 5800XT comes with a cooler, you're still going to want to buy a separate one because the included cooler will result in thermal throttling. I have a much lower power 5600G and it gets very close to thermal throttling with the same Wraith cooler even with the fan spinning at 100%, and the 5800XT uses almost twice as much power.
When it comes to gaming, all of the Ryzen 5000 CPUs perform within +/- 2% of each other. Legitimately between the 5600 and 5800XT you're looking at around 2% difference. So if you're on a tight budget go with the 5600 non-X which should run you about £90, and won't thermal throttle with the included cooler. Though, again, you probably want to replace it. But you can get something more like the £16 Thermalright Assassin Spirit 120 EVO.
But, I would not recommend you buy the 5600 either!
The problem is that apart from the 5700X3D, none of the Ryzen 5000 CPUs are necessarily going to be an improvement over the 9700K. Some games a 5600 can be about 10% faster than the 9700K, but in a few games the 9700K is just as much faster!
The 5700X3D is the only option if you're looking for an actual upgrade on AM4 over the 9700k. So I would just wait until you have the money to afford that. Or look to sell that motherboard and get an AM5 system and an 7500F which is only a little slower than the 5700X3D.
SmoothChemistry8564@reddit (OP)
basically everyone on here agrees 5700x3d is better and so once i sell my stuff i'll probably look into that.
i was actually gonna go with the 5600x but it seems like a sidegrade more than an upgrade. 5700x3d as u said and 5800XT from what ive seen in benchmarks kinda perform the same? or in some cases the 5700x3d is better, and i prob wont need a new cpu till AM6.
AM5 is for sure out the picture tho cuz i would have to spend 300 on top of what i already make from the GPU's just to upgrade platform and rn i dont really wanna do that, looks like x3d it is.
lLoveTech@reddit
Ideal case would be to switch AM5 since you have to get a new motherboard anyways for the upgrade but if you don't have the money for it right now then AM4 with a 5800XT is perfectly fine for a 2080S
SmoothChemistry8564@reddit (OP)
i have a spare AM4 motherboard from my old PC i can just use if i purchase an AM4 cpu. if i sell my GPU's lying around (2060s and 1660s) ill have around 240 more or less. its just a question of is the x3d really 60 GBP better than the 5800xt? if not then i might not even upgrade or ill just buy the 5800xt
lLoveTech@reddit
The x3D may not be worth 60 bucks more today but in the long run it will more than pay with its superior gaming performance! It's a one time investment and you are going to use the PC mainly for gaming then without a doubt go for the 5700x3d! Also if you buy a decent AM5 cooler today it will also be compatible with AM5 motherboards and CPU
SmoothChemistry8564@reddit (OP)
Probably because I think sometimes my 9700k holds me back and it'll be nice having a top tier CPU for my PC, but also when buying stuff like this I have a lot of anixety and think a lot LMAO. I mean it'll probably be much better than my 9700k and the 5800xt. I'll probably upgrade my PC fully in like a year or 2 or 3 depending on circumstances. Eh I dont know
lLoveTech@reddit
Get the 5700x3d and it will not let you down! After a few months you won't find an AM4 X3D CPU anymore
SmoothChemistry8564@reddit (OP)
that is true i will look look into it
AM5 is kind of not really in my options i'd have to spend 300 on top of the money I make off GPU's. so it's definitely a x3d or something like that move
lLoveTech@reddit
The 5700x3d is close to what many AM5 CPU s offer in gaming performance and it should last you 3 years for future games and also it's prices are only going to go up as their supply decreases
SmoothChemistry8564@reddit (OP)
true say. I think amazon allow refunds on parts if im not mistaken so if i need to i could just return?
Gonna sell off my stuff and decide shortly after.
aminy23@reddit
If you cant do a 5700X3D, then for a budget of £200, I would go with LGA1700 instead:

i have i7 9700K which I assume is similar to this CPU. I can afford x3d if i sell my 2060s and 1660s i have lying around but idk if its even worth upgrading to either 5800xt or 5700x3d from a i7 9700k
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
Hell no. 9700k is 4 generations older than it. Even today’s i3 12100f is almost as fast as that 9700k for gaming in single core performance.
13400f is a solid budget cpu. Although it’s probably about as fast as the 5800XT, it has a better upgrade path than AM4
SmoothChemistry8564@reddit (OP)
oh LMAO i dont know much about intel CPU's thats interesting
Ehh I dont really mind about upgrade path just need a CPU better than what I have. so either 5800xt or 5700x3d its just a matter of, is the 5700X3D really 60 GBP better than the 5800xt
VersaceUpholstery@reddit
For gaming, I would say yes
However a 5800 XT is barely faster than a 5800x or 5700x for gaming. Even a 5600(x). It's basically those CPUs, but clocked faster by default. You can enable PBO on those other CPUs and probably get similar performance. I think price wise you should be comparing those lower CPUs vs the 5700x3d.
A 5700x here is $120ish, 5700x3d is pushing $300 at this point. With how expensive the 5700x3d is, people are just paying a little extra to get on AM5.
aminy23@reddit
Not at all, this will even beat an i9-11900. An i3 will beat a 9700K: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/3335vs5156vs4245vs5166/Intel-i7-9700K-vs-Intel-i3-13100F-vs-Intel-i9-11900-vs-Intel-i5-13400F
One of the very important things is the age of hardware.
Related to this, these new CPUs have much higher single thread performance which matters for gaming. It also has faster connections for everything.
For example: * GPU connection * 9700K - PCIe 3.0 X16 * 5800XT - PCIe 4.0 X16 = 2x faster * 12100F - PCIe 5.0 X16 = 4x faster * RAM speed (can be OC'd higher) * 9700K - DDR4-2666 * 5800XT - DDR4-3200 * 12100F - DDR4-3200 or DDR5-4800 * SSD speed: * 9700K - Shared with everything else below * 5800XT or 12100F - dedicated 7,500 megabytes per second connection * Everything else - USB, Ethernet, Audio, WiFi, PCIe, SATA, more SSDs: * 9700K - Shares a 3,750 megabyte per second connection (3.0 X4) * 5800XT - Shares a 7,500 megabyte per second connection (4.0 X4) * 12100F - Shares a 15,000 megabyte per second connection (4.0 X8)
So even if the CPU performance was the same, the PC ends up faster because the GPU, SSD, RAM, and everything else gets faster.
But the newer CPUs have faster cores which matters for gaming.
And the newer CPUs are also supported for longer which is really important.
If you buy a 5 year old CPU architecture, in 3 years it's an 8 year old computer that's basically outdated.
And if you weren't counting the motherboard in that £200, then Intel has even better CPU options.
lLoveTech@reddit
What CPU do you have now?
SmoothChemistry8564@reddit (OP)
i7 9700K, sorry i updated post
cursedpanther@reddit
What's your current CPU?
Without a stable income the best course might to not upgrade at all and save that money for daily essentials.
SmoothChemistry8564@reddit (OP)
i7 9700K.
I forgot to mention in post i have a 2060S and 1660S to sell, so like if i sold them Its ok. I do have enough money but im just not employed so unless i sell my stuff its a loss.
Smarmy82@reddit
Don't but anything until you get a job. Then get the 5700x3d. Maybe catch a sale later in the year
