It took me 10 minutes to find this guy again. I swore it was a waking dream at one point.

The 90’s was a time that anyone could be In the public zeitgeist for no reason at all.

When Letterman change to CBS, NBC wouldn't let them use, Larry "Bud" Melman. They claimed that the name was NBC property. He then switched to his real name, Calvert DeForest, playing the same character.
Trolkarlen@reddit
That was quite petty of them. I'm sure they never used that name again.
RezRising@reddit
Oh, my dude, 80s NBC management would sue you for the lolz.
The whole jump from NBC to CBS by Letterman is heavily documented in articles, books, and mini series. NBC acted atrociously.

Anyone remember Mujibur and Sirajul, or any of the other folks Dave would drop in on?
Few_Onion9863@reddit
And Meg! She worked in publishing in a building across from NBC and they’d spy on her and call her extension. It was a riot!

Rupert Jee! I remember when Larry would try to conduct an interview and always screw up the mic position pulling it away when someone was trying to speak
GrumpySnarf@reddit
YES! Rupert! He always looked so awkward and anxious but he went for it anyway.

I remember a bit when Letterman was still on NBC where he put various things on railroad tracks and had a locomotive smash into them (a stack of Florissant lightbulbs, a fish tank full of guacamole etc).
One of the things he put on the tracks was ol Bud laying on a stretcher preparing to take a nap. The locomotive comes, hits the stretcher with a very obvious dummy in it, then they cut to the aftermath with Bud trying to shake it off saying “it knocked the wind out of me” but unharmed lol.
IDunnoNuthinMr@reddit
Fluorescent lightbulbs. Spell check didn't catch Florrisant because that's a suburb of St Louis.

He lived near me when I was a kid. I would see him in the mornings when I took the bus to junior high.

Saw Larry / Calvert as the king of a Mardi Gras float in 1994. Good times.

Sometimes I cringed because it felt like Dave was torturing this poor man... The night before christmas one where he was given the poem in French is one I remember.

I too have a memory unlocked. I wrote Dave Letterman for an autograph. Got this guy instead. Still have it somewhere.
I used to collect autographs when I was younger. I got that from my Nana.
She had autographs from EVERYONE back in the day. Cary Grant. Frank Sinatra. Lucille Ball. Those are at the top of my head.

When Harvey Pekar and Captain Beefheart wouldn’t go along with Dave’s bits, Larry Bud came through. But it was great seeing those two on TV in the first place.

He doesn't wear that uniform because he's a member of the United States Navy. He wears it because it makes him look good. Damn good.

I was all thrilled a year or so back when I found some old NYC scene indie movie from the late 70s on Tubi with a pre-Dave Calvert Deforest in it. Turned out to be kind slow to sit through, maybe I'll finish it at some point.
(Quick search, it's "Apple Pie," 1976)

Same happened to me about a month ago. Started watching the YouTube clips with old Mr Melman there. I must have watched about 30!

Letterman was fresh in the NBC years. As a college student, we were just getting the day started after Carson had signed off.
TwoStoopidToFurryass@reddit
I always heard his name as Larry Bud Mailman as a kid, and wondered why he never dressed as a mailman or ever had letters for Letterman.
