When you are not working, sleeping, doing housework, or caring for younger/older family members, what do you spend your free time on? Do you spend more of that time alone or connecting with others?

I'm curious to know what we GenXers are spending our leisure time on. What do you enjoy doing regularly that isn't an obligation? How much of it do you do alone? How much of that time do you spend connecting with other people? Are you part of a community such as a religious congregation or service organization? Do you generally socialize with other GenXers, or not?
I enjoy social (community) dancing, but find there are way more Boomers and Millennials than GenXers. Which has me wondering, where are all the GenXers hiding?
For example: I enjoy singing with an intergenerational group, playing an instrument, going for walks and short hikes alone or with a friend, watching Netflix and other streaming shows, listening to podcasts, reading nonfiction, and gardening. I enjoy potlucks, but prefer individual coffee meetups.
How about you?
Geenpools@reddit
I love to stay home and read. I also open water swim and sometimes go to Ecstatic dance. Not a total hermit, but do enjoy down time at home.
notgonnabemydad@reddit
I've always wanted to get into ecstatic dance!

I’m going to start reading books again. Stephen king, earnest Hemingway, ray bradbury…I find I’m not into the newer movies, shows or music so I’m just going to escape thru the pages of books written by great authors.
notgonnabemydad@reddit
+1 for Ray Bradbury! God, he messed with my head in such a good way as a teenager. Same with SK. They never grow old.
NoGood2154@reddit
I just rode down to Miami Beach / Key West & back home to Louisville, over 1000 miles / 1600km each way on my Goldwing

not gonna lie.. it hurt just a little, but worth it.

I go hiking, on backpacking trips, snowshoe, swim, hit the gym, and trail run when I don't have middle-aged injuries. I love to read, to cook, and to grow veggies, preserve them, and convert my yard to drought-tolerant native landscaping. I also try to regularly meditate and spend time building community with friends. And I'm trying to spend more time seeing live music if it's not too damn expensive. I'm child-free by choice and have an active partner, so this works in general, although I have one million interests (obvs) so I can never get to everything I want to learn, visit, or create. I have a huge list of bucket list goals. I do wish I had a more deeply connected community of friends, but I'm super grateful to have good people in my life. My parents suck, so I have very little time or obligation spent on them. I've given them my time and energy in the past, and no more. I see a good amount of GenXers outdoors with me in CO.
bikeking8@reddit
I still have 12 year olds so I'm getting as much time in with them as I can before the inevitable "Too Cool for Dad" decade, which is understandable when they need to start finding their own way.
However. When I do have time completely to myself, it's always been either single player video games or watching whatever my wife has on with her. It'll be much different ten years from now, maybe I'll get back into mountain biking or long bikes again, or even gardening 🤷♂️. Never tried it.
VisualEyez33@reddit
Ham radio, both from home and also portable from nearby state parks. I'm also learning Morse code to use that as a conversational language with other radio operators that know it.
So, I get to be social when I want to be with a generally friendly bunch, without needing to leave the house.
I have a local friend group of about 15 folks that I've known 20+ years. I host quarterly barbecues, and some of them do, too, so there's usually one of those to go to nearly every month.
zanadu_queen@reddit
I love that ham radio is still a hobby. My father and grandfather were avid ham operators and know Morse code. Sadly, my grandfather is gone, and my father no longer does it either. It was a wave of nostalgia to read your comment 😭🫶
VisualEyez33@reddit
The Morse code portion of the US licensing exam was dropped over 20 years ago, and it went to all multiple choice questions, which are publicly published along with the correct answers. So, there's no easier time than now if you had ever considered getting involved...
zanadu_queen@reddit
Maybe I will…I just retired. I also know I no longer have to erect an ENORMOUS antenna larger than my house with cables support from each corner of the property. Last time I remember my dad on his radio, it was handheld. Thank you for these little reminders of my past ❤️
CasaDeThor@reddit
Omg you’re not kidding. Many years ago I had a neighbor in FL that had the biggest antenna/tower I have ever seen in a residential area with cables everywhere. The house was dwarfed by that thing. Never could figure why anyone would do that or how it was allowed in a residential neighborhood
zanadu_queen@reddit
The more you know…. Hahaha.
Adventurous-Topic-54@reddit
I'm an extreme introvert: my hobbies are solo and at home. I read, write, knit, and scrapbook. Once a month or so, I get a wild hair up my butt and decide I'm gifted in home decor/light diy (spoiler: I'm not.) I watch a lot of YT gaming, and enough true crime to probably land my name on some lists. I daydream. I talk to myself. I daydream what I should have said in that argument that one time, and then I mutter out loud both parts of how I wish the conversation had gone.
CasaDeThor@reddit
😂 so it’s not just me rehashing conversations and having entire agreements/disagreements by myself 🤔 gtk
spintool1995@reddit
I'll let you know if I'm ever not doing those things.
Apprehensive-Bit1634@reddit
I spend my free time alone mostly watching sports or working a hobby that I enjoy. Spending a third of my life with people at work and helping my 81 year old mother is all the interaction I can stand. In general I don’t care for people.
MountainTomato9292@reddit
Hanging out with my husband and/or kids is honestly my favorite thing. But if I find myself alone I read. Or sometimes cross stitch but it’s real hit or miss if that’ll hold my attention.
Rvaldrich@reddit
Half an hour in the morning to exercise. That's it.
There's literally nothing else but what you mentioned. Work, sleep, chores, caring for family members.
Free time is something I'll get when my parents die. Assuming I don't have to care for nieces or nephews.
LVMom@reddit
I spend my free time doing solitary activities like reading or watching British detective series. I just can’t deal with people on my off days
REO_Studwagon@reddit
Reading, fishing, birding. Fewer people around the better.

I seem to spend a lot of time walking the dog. Also reading, working out, taking a dance class once a week or so. I moved last fall and need to get back into volunteering and playing pickleball.
TrashyTardis@reddit
Gardening, walking/trail walking w my dog, watching British tv w my dog, reading, crocheting. Different times of the year I’m doing different things not all of these at once. I’m also on PTA, but that feels like work so lol…
I also joined the county master gardeners last year and volunteer w them.
megaboz@reddit
What is this "free time" you speak of?
Ineffable7980x@reddit
In the summer, I am at the beach pretty much every Saturday with like-minded friends.
I also have a long standing "friends dinner" on Tuesday night. We rarely miss it.
I also read a lot. Love book shopping (especially used). Go for hikes. Help other people in recovery (I'm sober).
I also love sports, mostly baseball, football and soccer.
Finally, I see my parents as much as possible. They are getting older and I don't know how much longer I will have them around.
blackkatstudios@reddit

JoyHealthLovePeace@reddit (OP)
True, but my question is where are the GenXers? We are here, so where are we?
Lollygagger105@reddit
Exactly: here, tapping away on our phones! I much prefer being home alone since lockdowns. I read a lot, watch so much TV, drink wine, endlessly weed the garden, and household chores seem incessant. I’m a member of my local zoo, so go over there for walks and to take photos, usually on my own. I used to go to the cinema a lot, but I’ve gone off that now, as other people can be so annoying!
Finding_Way_@reddit
Volunteering, often with others
Movies, often alone
Exercising, with others in classes
Books, reading alone but discussing with others in clubs
But mainly just hanging with my spouse
I'm an extrovert and lean towards communal things when possible.
erilaz7@reddit
Usually around 20 concerts per year. LOTS of movies, whether in theaters or at home (Blu-ray, DVD, VHS (!), or streaming). TV. Reading. Shopping for things that I collect. Way too much time on the internet.
I do most of this stuff alone, but sometimes with friends. Some are my age, some older, some younger.
shammy_dammy@reddit
I play video games. And write. And sew.
MothyBelmont@reddit
I spend most of my time with my wife and friends when schedule allows it. I spend most my time at work tho.

AngelsHaveThPhoneBox@reddit
Reading and watching movies or documentaries. I usually knit while I'm watching something. Knitting helps me de-stress.

I've been collecting vintage Topps baseball cards. Building the collection I was working on back in the 80s. I bought a few cards today
CitizenChatt@reddit
During COVID I pulled out my bb card collection and started working on my Expos book. Every year, every Topps card from 1969 up.
Also, I completed a Steve Carlton set. Every year of his Topps cards from '65 till retirement.
What projects are you still working on?
Fun stuff!
craigechoes9501@reddit
Cool. I got back into it about a year and a half ago and finished up my album from the 80s. I had some good cards but upgraded a bunch as well.
Then I started working on a treasure box of vintage cards that I have always wanted. It has 58 cards. Some '56, '58, and then a bunch of Hall of Famers up to the 1982 Cal Ripken Traded Rookie.
It is fun!
CitizenChatt@reddit
Nice. DM if you want to talk more about this great hobby of ours

Mostly tabletop RPGs, both running them and writing for them. I play some video games, but fewer than when I was young and for less time per session.
Also doomscrolling reddit.
PurpleHat6415@reddit
I've become super-introverted since COVID tbh. I've got kids at home so not short of everyday social but it's pretty rare that I do anything other than an hour or two chatting over coffee with anyone else if I'm not being paid to.
so mostly I just stay at home, listen to music, clean, watch series, talk about random things on social media.
joseyellie@reddit
I have been a social worker 24 years, I stay as far away from folks as possible on .my off days
Relative-Scholar3385@reddit
I'm pretty solitary. I have about 7 close friends and that's enough as far as friends but I do wish I was part of a solid community like church but not church. I've always been an introvert and mostly comfortable with it.
I have a dog daycare and boarding service. This actually provides some extra socializing (with the owners not just the dogs 😉)but not too deep, which is perfect. And I enjoy providing a service that people sincerely appreciate.
Other than that i usually spend one on one time with friends or alone. watching tv, hiking, painting a lot lately, swimming and hanging out with my husband.

Single white dude here. I try to either get out on my paddleboard with my dog or ride my mountain bike. Mountain biking I have a small group of guys that I try to keep up with and that’s pretty much the only community I have anymore. Haven’t done church since 2008 and that’s pretty much the only community group available in my area. So me and Bill the Super Paddle Dog keep each other company
libbuge@reddit
I work out a lot. I'm also on a rowing team, so I do that 2 or 3 mornings a week. Other than that- reading and crossword puzzles. I try to see friends, but I do spend a good amount of my free time on my own.
bizzylearning@reddit
Super plugged in with our church community - I run the little bookstore, help with festival planning, take meals to folks, and generally show up as needed, there. (Got a lady's electricity back up last week. lol)
I used to run community educational groups, organize field trips for high schoolers, and volunteer on search and rescue, but I'm in a weird transitional period, now.
I spend a lot of my downtime studying for my next certification (whatever that may be). Two more, and then I'm cutting myself off like I'm both the drunk at the bar and the bartender.
I used to love to read (still do, theoretically), but now I fall asleep the minute I curl up with a book.
I love to travel, but it's either solo or with the young adult kids. I can't bring myself to do tour groups.
gimme3strokes@reddit
Sexy time, the gym, my Buick Riviera, and my death machines(atv, motorcycles, dirtbikes, three wheelers, and side by side). Other than sexy times most of it is alone. All my really good friends are dead or gave up on life.

There’s not a lot of us Gen X around tbh. My world is either older or younger people. Our parents and our kids mostly. In our sibling group between the wife and I we have five gen X and five millennials.

Lonely_Storage2762@reddit
Alone, with pets, or with my daughter (sometimes with my son chatting on STEAM while we play games together). I need the down time. I'm an introvert.
Being around people exhausts me. Part of that is masking because I am ADHD inattentive type (diagnosed as an adult). It seems I learned how to act normal as a child because I was constantly corrected and punished until I performed correctly around others.
I just have to have some part of the day without people or I get extremely stressed which triggers my health issues (IBS, migraines, fibromyalgia).

A great way to burn time in the winter. Pleasingly twee. Pretty nice price and quite good in terms of quality.
I got a few big sheets of construction paper from the dollar store and packs of super glue. Technically, these are made to press fit together, but super glue makes assembly a lot easier and faster.
Have to be careful on kits that have moving parts. Study the assembly diagrams and test fit things so you don't accidentally glue moving parts together.
Fingernail polish remover also dissolves super glue, handy to keep a bottle nearby with Q-tips in case you glue your fingers or the wrong parts together.

We don't have kids and almost none of my friends do either, so we have a little more free time.

3-D printing, taking care of family, working and reading. Outside of that, I really do not like to people much. Found my tolerance of people has gotten worse as I have gotten older. The military may have had something to do with that.

Word games and tv series. I lost all of my friends when I had kids and couldn’t make new ones at the mom and baby groups because I had 4 babies. When I showed up I made the gathering too big because of having 4 of them. So, no friends, nothing exciting, just word games and tv

Most of my time is spent working, sleeping, doing housework, and caring for family members.
I also read a lot of thrillers, watch Netflix series long after everyone else in the world has seen them, occasionally meet friends for coffee or brunch, and paint.
