It’s been a long, good run.
Prestigious_Egg_6207@reddit
Eh, he’s a transphobic old man. He should have packed it in years ago.
PFAS_All_Star@reddit
Transphobic how?
NoNotTheBoreWorms@reddit
He apparently supports JL Rowling, and when asked about it said:
"I'm afraid I'm not that interested in trans folks," the Monty Python star replied to a question about his support for the Harry Potter author and her controversial stance on trans people. "I just hope they're happy and that people treat them kindly. Right now I'm more focused on threats to democracy in America, the rampant corruption in the UK, the appalling British Press, the revelations about police brutality..."
fearless-penguin@reddit
So basically not having an opinion and just wishing they were happy and treated kindly is considered “transphobia” these days?
🤯
rsint@reddit
If you don't show at least utter deference. You are a phobe.

fearless-penguin@reddit
I’m sorta thinking you don’t know what that word means…
Phobia: Phobias are anxiety disorders characterized by persistent, irrational, and excessive fear of a specific situation or object.
Not agreeing with someone, or disliking, or even indifferent is not a phobia.
No9No9No9No9@reddit
My friend divorced her husband when she came out as trans and wanted surgery. She said, I'm not gay,I can't be married to a woman. She said, "your transphobic and never loved me". That is so sad and crazy to me. I wish her the absolute best and hope she finds happiness forever.
PersianCatLover419@reddit
The badly kept secret is that many trans people are homophobic/biphobic and hate gays and bisexual men and women, especially if we are for the rights of trans adults but we just do not want to date or sleep with anyone trans.
Brilliant-Jaguar-784@reddit
Its absolutely true. An ex of mine came out a decade ago as a woman, and their first comment was to me was "hey, you don't have to be gay anymore!"
I happen to like being gay, thank you very much. There's so much homophobia in that community.
PersianCatLover419@reddit
I have had trans people insist that because I am a bisexual man I must date and/or sleep with them, or marry them. No thanks I don't want to marry anyone and anyone of any sex/gender who is that adamant about how I must date them or sleep with them is insecure, desperate, and the last person I want to date or have sex with.
Battle-Any@reddit
Im a bi woman married to a bi mtf woman. We are also in a non-monagamous relationship. I've had dates with a couple of different trans women. I didn't click with any of them. One was super understanding about it; they didn't click with me romantically either. We still chat sometimes.
One freaked out about it. Long story short, I have to be attracted to her, Im a transphobic piece of shit because Im not, and she's going to shame me all over cities Facebook trans groups. Sure lady, whatever. You just proved exactly why I want to back away as far and fast as possible.
I don't sleep with people who feel entitled to sleep with me, and I sure AF don't sleep with people who thinks it's ok to shame any adult for who they're attracted to. Unless you're attracted to minors.
NoNotTheBoreWorms@reddit
Pretty much.
joeyheartbear@reddit
He also complained about London not being "British" anymore.
PersianCatLover419@reddit
It really isn't a more, it's super international much like Philadelphia, NYC, SF, Paris, etc.
aga8833@reddit
It isn't in many ways. It is an international city. Pretty much all he said.
Dr-Alec-Holland@reddit
Good grief if that sentiment fails the purity test then I’m not sure I want to pass it

This was the main story. He's maintained his support of JKR specifically around this issue, sooo you tell me, is a supporter of JKR, a vowed anti trans woman, also anti trans?
kenyafeelme@reddit
If he wants to be supportive of transphobes and give weak wishy washy support for trans rights he can go fuck himself
hunterglyph@reddit
I was such a fan of Monty Python and of him specifically in high school. I’m not somebody who wants to be loved back by a celebrity, but it’s a bummer that I’m categorically disliked and misunderstood by an ex-hero.
DigDry6895@reddit
Oh boo fuckin hoo
hunterglyph@reddit
Fuck you too. Still not going anywhere.

You're so brave. You do you, the only life choice I'm gonna give ya shit about is being a cry baby.
hunterglyph@reddit
Your dad was kind of a dick, wasn’t he?
DigDry6895@reddit
No he was a lovely and kind person who taught behavior disorder kids who were told by their parents that they were pieces of shit or were put here special, it seems to lead to the same crappy self involved person. Like yourself
hunterglyph@reddit
Well, I’ve heard kindness sometimes skips a generation, so there we go. You really like complaining for somebody who’s whining about people complaining. Oh- sorry, did you want the 5 minute argument or the full half hour?
DigDry6895@reddit
Calmer than you are, go have all the babies you want Loretta.
hunterglyph@reddit
See, wherever you think you veer, you’re just an asshole. You have no credibility with me, I couldn’t give less of a shit if I have credibility with you, so go ahead and take the last word while pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps, knowing that you’re a rEaL mAn, Butch.

Yes, but it’s not my job to do that work for you. Bring on the downvotes, bigots.
Prestigious_Egg_6207@reddit
Yeah, my dad and I bonded over JC’s shows and he died last year, so it’s hard to say I’m no longer a fan. But I can’t support bigotry and hatred.
rsint@reddit
Soo ...you've become the Spanish Inquisition?
pugilistic_pedagogue@reddit

metalyger@reddit
cdgman@reddit
I think a lot of it is a generational stance. People from our era here that phrase and see nothing wrong with it. Where as other generational standpoints differ.
thekinslayer7x@reddit
The whole attitude of "if you are not with us in exactly this way" is stupidly problematic.
fearless-penguin@reddit
There is a world between “with us” and “against us” that much of the world lives in… and that’s: “I’m just winging it at this life shit and got my own problems”.
mildOrWILD65@reddit
Good Christ, the number of people lacking reading comprehension grows larger every year. Or it's a bunch of people wanting to be offended by every fucking thing. I'm trans and nothing he's said is offensive nor antithetical to being trans. This is what he said , people:
You do you, I think there a lot more important things going on in the world".
He's right. We are on in the brink of a global economic collapse thanks to a US President with multiple bankruptcies and felonies on his record, combined with instability in the Middle East, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, and the positioning of US nuclear naval forces close to Russia. That doesn't even include tensions with China and India, which comprise more than 1/4 of the world's population.
And Cleese gets excoriated for basically saying "you do you, be well, but there's more serious shit going on". Fucking hell, I'm trans and he's right. I have a singular, personal struggle that does NOT affect billions of people. That's what Cleese was saying, too.
wynonnaspooltable@reddit
Ok. But he’s still an abusive, racist piece of shit.
https://www.cracked.com/article_43907_was-john-cleese-always-this-bad.html
Fr4gd0ll@reddit
You're going to use Cracked to support your claims?
wynonnaspooltable@reddit
There are dozens of these from all sorts of outlets… all behind a paywall. Except maybe Guardian.
Look, I used to love the man. But he’s a casual racist and thinks that the joke is paramount above all else. Grow up.
Fr4gd0ll@reddit
Yeah I'm sorry you're trying to prove a point and the information you use is in this terribly written article that sites no sources and uses the phrase "garbage opinions" and then you say there's "more out there" behind a paywall.
I'm not convinced.
thekinslayer7x@reddit
London, as it exists today, is not the London that existed while he was growing up. That's a universal phenomenon, but for a city like London that had a very strong culture for centuries, it probably hits harder.
He didn't say he hated what it's become, just that it is different.
Not everyone is out there spewing hate, and it's okay to miss what was while accepting that things change.

Plenty of options beyond the Guardian.
wynonnaspooltable@reddit

polobum17@reddit

Why do you want to be Loretta, Stan?
thekinslayer7x@reddit
This scene ages better than some people give it credit. They don't understand Loretta, but they try to and then recognize her choice.
thebrandedsoul@reddit
My point, exactly.
tadcalabash@reddit
I don't think John Cleese actively harbors hatred towards trans people, no. But you're ignoring the greater context of what he said around "you do you, be well".
He made that statement after supporting JK Rowling when she started down her anti-trans crusade. And after saying "you do you, be well" he responded with a transphobic joke and repeated a couple anti-trans talking points.
He's an old man who doesn't like the world changing. I don't think that makes him transphobic, but I think it's certainly justifiable to criticize him for being close minded and ambivalent to the suffering of an entire class of people.
KissMyAlien@reddit
Hi Trans, I'm dad.
goosedog79@reddit
The problem with the internet is the trolls that attack a “you do you” response by saying it doesn’t fully aggrandize and support someone who is trans, etc. I’ve seen plenty of comments attacked for not being supportive or supportive enough in the trolls eyes, then the internet trolls just pile on.
pm_me_your_amphibian@reddit
Exactly. There are some people out there who seem to think “support” means you have to be shouting and screaming and bleating at every given opportunity. Trans people should be treated as well as they deserve, just like anyone else. You don’t get a fanfare everywhere you go, I just don’t have the energy.
No9No9No9No9@reddit
Marc Maron said something to the effect of "we have become so annoying people would rather vote for fascism". He is not wrong. Sorry.
mechapoitier@reddit
It’s true. I’ve said it before but there’s a speed limit to social change. You break that limit and you get the opposite of what you wanted.
You can’t shame a hundred million people into changing their views on (insert increasingly more niche group of people) faster, but people tried anyway, and so we ended up with a psychopathic criminal as president.
It’s taken 250 years to get American society to pretty much accept black people as equals. 250 years. But some brand new Dems think they can speedrun full trans rights in a decade in the same country and if we don’t do it they’ll sit home on Election Day.
fearless-penguin@reddit
Absolutely agree with your sentiment.
Mav3r1ck77@reddit
You do you, pretty much describes our generation. I think the world needs to live that phrase.
turtlenipples@reddit
"You do you" and "be excellent to each other" pretty much cover it.
puma_pantss@reddit
He's the best. I have him tattooed on my arm.
Le_Sadie@reddit
I went to see him live a few years ago and it was like an hour and a half of an old man yelling at the clouds. All he did was that "everything is so woke now" set boomer comedians do now (I'm sure he used the words 'politically correct' at the time) but just flailing like all those stand-ups who get left behind because they can't keep up with the times or what people find funny and he's bitter about it. It was sad and unfunny which is what Cleese is now so happy retirement. Glad he figured it out.
maggie320@reddit
I always used to get him confused with the guys from the Tombstone Pizza commercial. And this coming from someone whose dad loved Monty Python and Fawlty Towers.

You too, huh?
I was the same way with Christopher Lee and the Listerine guy.
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit (OP)
Why is this getting downvoted??!
maggie320@reddit
He’s one of those actors you saw show up in a lot of TV shows back then but I have no idea what his name is.
One-Earth9294@reddit
Really hard to put into words how influential Monty Python and the films of Terry Gilliam have been in my life. I won't be able to bear seeing the rest of the troupe go, but time only works in one direction sadly.
chunkybudz@reddit
I always loved him. Watched just about everything the crew ever made and most of their own projects as .
Over the last few years (maybe decade?), it's been apparent that he's vastly out of touch. I scratch it up to age and his economic situation. I've been disappointed in many things that he's said, but I feel like he's both uninformed and misinformed while retaining the self confidence that he's always had. In a way, it's good to see he's kept that attitude... I just wish that he had the ability to really stay on top of things if he was going to comment.
He won't be around for much longer and it'll be very sad when he's gone. I hope he's not judged for the last years. I hope his earlier work and stances are remembered. His body of work deserves that, but idk if that's how it'll go.
