Tin lunchboxes

What tin lunch box did you have growing up? Mine was The Muppets with a Kermit the Frog plastic thermos. The only thing I ever got in it was water. I can still smell the stale sandwiches from emptying it after school

I had a paper bag.

Knight Rider, BITCHES! But I was one of the few with a clunky metal box, and I was jealous of the plastic ones.

Me too! I still have mine. It's full of zip ties.
Dlbruce0107@reddit
I had a red plaid metal lunchbox with a matching thermos (Kool aid or juice). Lunch would be either a meat, a peanut butter or a cheese sandwich on white bread wrapped in cellophane or foil; a pack from Little Debbie; a twist of cellophane containing Nestle's Quik for the box of white milk .

I miss the thermoses. I can find these same kind of lunch boxes so many places, but they don't include a thermos anymore.

I wanted a Michael Jackson lunch box, begged for it. My parents refused, might have been concerned about what family would think. Grandparents were certainly racist.
OrilliaBridge@reddit
I had a used Roy Roger’s lunchbox that was a treasure to me because I was a horse crazy girl. I don’t know where it came from but I’ll always remember it. Other than that it was reused lunch bags and wax paper. We did get to buy milk at school, though.

"You guys got lunchboxes?"
We got sandwiches wrapped in wax paper in a paper bag. 🙁
_TallOldOne_@reddit
And I made that sandwich myself!
manuredujour@reddit (OP)
Was it bologna, mayo and cheese on white bread?
BigAndTall1968@reddit
Mayo?
You think we were rich or something?
Pffft....
mb46204@reddit
Wax paper sounds pretty fancy, but maybe my family just wasn’t as savvy that this was an option.
I mostly got school free lunches with little packets of mayo when it included something like a tired burger.
classicsat@reddit
Tired burger? Ours were rejects from the homless shelte rand the prison.
That is all the Four Yorkshirmen I can go.
mb46204@reddit
As far as you can go, huh?
Our burgers were tired because they had first been served at the homeless shelters and prisons. They weren’t rejected there, just collected after and repurposed for school lunches. Nothing went to waste back then…
(I had to look up the Four Yorkshiremen, but finding it really inspired me. Though your point is a good one…calling wax paper fancy was silly, because the little plastic baggies we used for sandwiches was probably fancier and more wasteful.)
Hondahobbit50@reddit
I would have been SOO HAPPY. I graduated in 07 and the ONLY condiment was the big ol' pump of ranch dressing. That, btw. I'm CERTAIN they just mixed with water... No ketchup, no mustard.... Burgers every day on one of the three lunch lines but no condiments....then they took away the fries for health reasons...THEY WEREN'T FRIED
I will say I do often crave my high schools spicy chicken sando from time to time. I'd pile it up with onions and spinach from the salad bar and put a little plop of ranch....then id as Sally, the main lunch lady for a shake of her secret......she kept a bottle of Tabasco behind the cash register. Loved that woman
That and the square breakfast pizza and the wipers breakfast BARS. They were a breaded slice of ham egg and cheese spam essentially, breaded and deep fried.
Hondahobbit50@reddit
...... miracle whip....
jestingvixen@reddit
PB&J, strawberry, preserves so there were chunks of strawberry. Whole wheat bread.
I miss peanut butter. I started getting itchy about ten years ago, thought it might be best just to back away slowly. Last year, commercial bread* and I had to part ways.
*I'm aware there are some decent gluten free breads out there. It's just that I'm able to produce much better bread in small batches than they are. And it's very much not the same as the Whole Wheat Bread Of Childhood ™️
WimpyZombie@reddit
With the prevalence of peanut allergies these days....do they even let kids bring PB&J sandwiches from home anymore?
jestingvixen@reddit
Depends on the school and how many kids have how severe an allergy in that space/grade, as far as I can tell. Hit and miss. Mostly I consider it my job to keep myself away from threats to my health, but kids have a lot less autonomy, so I guess I can wrap my head around it in some circumstances.

Most of the time it was! In a brown bag. Sometimes pb and j, sometimes we'd get ham or turkey for the meat. On a very rare occasion I'd be allowed to buy the school lunch.
I did have a plastic care bear lunchbox but that was fairly quickly lost, hence the brown bags after that lol

Tin lunchboxes were banned my schools where i was before I was of school age because they were used in fights. I remember wooden boxes for pens ,pencils and such banned in my elementary school in early 80s. Soft plastic and canvas only.
We did have huge problem with fights back then and they were mostly school on school. You really don't want to know what went on during soccer matches -those fights were nr1 reason I stopped playing soccer at 14.

The Dukes of Hazzard. I loved the General Lee car. I sat in one the prior summer at our local fair and got to blow the "Dixie" horn. I was an idiot kid with no concept of why the dixie flag was demeaning to some people. I also remember reading Poe at the time and actually looked around for a lunchbox with ravens on it. No go, so I settled on the Dukes one. I was a the weird girl in my class. I wouldn't have minded the cool Transformer one one of my classmates had, but I feared being made even more fun of over that.

manuredujour@reddit (OP)
I remember that one!
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
My mom was a teacher at my elementary school and the school provided free breakfast and lunches to all students who needed them, so I usually ate breakfast and lunch in the school cafeteria. It was usually Malt ‘O Meal or scrambled eggs with toast for breakfast and lunch was either pizza and steamed broccoli or cheese enchiladas with fideo. The only time I brought a packed lunch was when I had spent the previous night at my favorite grandma’s house. She always made me a peanut butter and orange marmalade sandwich, carrot and celery sticks and a mason jar filled with Tang ice cubes.
kckitty71@reddit

School Lunch Pizza
Prinessbeca@reddit
It's so strange to me to hear that so many other schools served corn with their pizza.
We always got salad with Italian dressing, pineapple, and a chocolate chip cookie. And pizza day never coincided with chocolate milk day.
Hot dog day was always on a chocolate milk day. It came with a single ketchup packet, tater tots, peaches, and a frosted brownie with chopped peanuts on top.
TheJokersChild@reddit
It would make more sense in England. I've heard they do that there.

Quirky_Commission_56@reddit

I had a red plaid tin lunch box. Made all the kids jealous on the days my Mom would fill the thermos with hot chicken noodle soup and tie a string on a hot dog, lowered into the hot soup. ExternalLiterature76@reddit
Yes. I had to get a lunchbox every year but my parents were too lazy and cheap to buy school supplies when there were ample choices in stock. They would wait until the last possible minute before school started and I’d have to pick through the on sale leftovers. I’d start school every year with my 2 new pairs of pants, 3 shirts, one pair of shoes, and shitty tin lunch box. No replacements if shit got broken, stolen or worn out.

I put my mitten in his face with one hand. With the other hand I lashed out with my full of lunch lunchbox. I connected squarely with his head. hard enough to dent in the lid of my lunchbox.
Bully fell backwards into the aisle screaming and crying. Bus driver stopped the bus. Came back. Looked at me with no expression, said no words (he knew what was up) and brought the bully to the front of the bus. The seat closest to him to keep an eye on him.
I saved this lunchbox for a long time. Always looked at that dent as a symbol of courage.
As an adult, i am somewhat ashamed… I could have really hurt that kid. That lunchbox was heavy and I hit him awfully hard. But the bullied younger kid I was is still proud of that moment. This moment gave me confidence to fight back when you have no choice.

My mom never let us take our lunch to school! She raised 9 kids and her thinking was if she had an opportunity to not have to cook, she was taking it. We paid full price, too!
WimpyZombie@reddit
Back in the mid-70s when we paid "full price" that meant 35 cents for the "hot" lunch and 25 cents for the "soup and sandwich". 5 cents for the half pint of milk.

WimpyZombie@reddit
I think in kindergarten (maybe first grade?) I had a metal lunch box. I will never forget what it looked like - it was "Miss America"....just some generic made-up pretty woman (she was a brunette) all decked out with the crown, cape and flowers, with all the runners-up, smiling in the background. Bordered in hot pink. Now that I think about it, I never had a thermos....so I wonder if it was a hand-me-down from my sisters.
I was a total tomboy at that age and didn't want anything to do with princesses, Miss America or Barbie. I wanted to climb trees!

CrowArmyQueenie@reddit
I would’ve killed for “The Rescuers”! I didn’t even know that existed as an option! I’ll be looking on eBay right now. “Pigs in Space” is also A++. You were obviously the envy of the lunch room. I had “Annie” which I freaking loved.

Cabbage Patch Kids also with a thermos. My grandparents basically raised me and my grandmother gave me milk in the Thermos and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a radish next to it almost daily. The radish would always make a soggy spot next to sandwich and the milk would be lukewarm by lunch time. Still some funny cherished moments though.
