I was eating canned tuna for dinner, and realized it looks kinda pathetic. So I added yogurt, butter, and cheese and now somehow it looks worse.

Could of made tuna salad… but you didn’t.
Eis_ber@reddit
Cheese, ok. But why yogurt and butter?
constipated_coconut@reddit
Tbh I’ve mixed tuna, mayo and yogurt before. Still confused about the butter though
Syzergic@reddit (OP)
The real question is why NOT butter.
The yogurt I have no excuse. Making it less dry, I guess.
_ladyfiona@reddit
Mayo, Dijon mustard, and dill relish
sushi_dumbass@reddit
Yougurt is good in tuna I will die on this hill
Spudperson@reddit
Did you drain the can of tuna before eating it??
Syzergic@reddit (OP)
More or less?
Spudperson@reddit
People usually recommend not draining it and instead mixing everything together. It's a lot better and a lot less dry that way imo.
Description_Friendly@reddit
Fvck naw! ALWAYS drain your tuna. If not the excess liquids cause the mayo to separate and not get a proper, creamy texture. Turns to fish soup. What you talkin' dude?? 🤦 Please tell me you were kidding.
Takamojo@reddit
how much oil do tuna have in there? 😅 I never drain it (olive oil ones) and it's not much oil either, once squished the dry tuna it just absorb and isn't dry nor too oily either. but I use tuna in salads so it works like the sauce with other mixed stuff so it's not a sandwich per se
Description_Friendly@reddit
Ok. But 9/10 doctors disagree with you.
Spudperson@reddit
If you dont eat it with mayo, though, it shouldn't be a problem then. I've eaten cans of fish on their own, lol.
T8-TR@reddit
This is the first time I've seen anyone recommend not draining tuna before eating it.
neep_pie@reddit
I've seen it a lot on youtube lately. Personally, I don't drain it... that's flavor and nutrition
JwPATX@reddit
But it’s a soggy sandwich
Takamojo@reddit
but I don't understand. drain it so to add lots of mayo. isn't it going to get the sandwich soggy anyway?
JwPATX@reddit
Mayo doesn’t make it soggy, but I’m also adding jalepenos from a jar, which are also hard to fully drain, and a couple of other wet ingredients like sriracha, so I try to get as much of the tuna water out as possible first.
neep_pie@reddit
mayo is mostly fat, so it doesn't really make bread soggy
neep_pie@reddit
I don't know how much liquid people are seeing in their tuna. The cans I get, it's minimal. Realistically I just drink it anyway
Spudperson@reddit
Really? I feel like I've seen a few people recommend not draining it.
NYTatt2Chick@reddit
Always drain it
Takamojo@reddit
only the sunflower oil ones. the olive oil one I keep it
canolafly@reddit
Not drain chunk light to death, and give solid albacore a quick squeeze?
Although, chunk light is desperation tuba.
NYTatt2Chick@reddit
It’s cat food.
Spudperson@reddit
Wait, why should I always drain it?? This is a genuine question, I really dont know.
NYTatt2Chick@reddit
Yes. Always drain it.
Spudperson@reddit
WHY
NYTatt2Chick@reddit
I edited my last comment after realizing I didn’t answer your question. Sorry.
Spudperson@reddit
Ahh I see now, thank you!
HTD-Vintage@reddit
I love how quickly that changed from "people usually recommend" to "I feel like I've seen a few people recommend"
Spudperson@reddit
Tbh I have a terrible memory so I could be remembering things wrong. Im definitely learning a lot about how to prepare canned fish now.
HTD-Vintage@reddit
It's okay, at the end of the day you eat what you like, however you like.
Takamojo@reddit
idk why you're getting downvoted. if it's olive oil I don't drain it. I use it as part of the sauce (and btw, I add yogurt to it, but less of a spoon: yogurt, mayo, soy sauce and the oil of the can and it's good) . now, if it's sunflower oil, I do grain it
Frothynibbler@reddit
That’s really more for the kind packed in oil
Spudperson@reddit
Yeah im learning that I was wrong lol
EmployerUpstairs8044@reddit
I agree. If you shake the crap out of the can, the liquid and the tuna mix and the tuna is not dry, and has more flavor.
Op...I wish you all the best meals
Syzergic@reddit (OP)
🫡 I will try my best
NYTatt2Chick@reddit
Don’t do that. Just get solid white albacore in water (oil is okay too). It’s far superior to chunk light garbage. Mix with mayo, salt, pepper, maybe some diced celery and/or onion and put it on bread (toasted or untoasted). These people are crazy people.
Description_Friendly@reddit
Good lord! You ARE a monster.
MandatorySaxSolo@reddit
With that logic, why not add Pepsi? It's a liquid.
Syzergic@reddit (OP)

umsamanthapleasekthx@reddit
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted I guess people are just xenophobic. You’re trying your best at humaning and I support you!
Also maybe people aren’t thinking about plain yogurt and think you’ve dumped in some Yoplait or something.
rlywoxy@reddit
Xenophobic? Ok wtf lmao
umsamanthapleasekthx@reddit
Many commenters are insinuating OP isn’t human (see: “Have you had human food before?”). While xenophobia refers to a fear/hatred of foreigners, it would also apply to a fear/hatred of any type of alien.
ZeePirate@reddit
Pretty sure it’s satire. He’s calling him a xenomorph aka an alien
rlywoxy@reddit
Oh thank you I was so confused
NeitherExamination44@reddit
You obviously are new to human food and took your best shot at “tuna salad” and honestly, good guess!! Most people use mayo though
theinternetisnice@reddit
I like mixing a little mayo with sour cream to give it that goopy Mexican restaurant texture.
Frigate_Orpheon@reddit
Mayo + Sriracha 🤌✨️
SupernaturalPumpkin@reddit
Yes! I do this or mayo and tobasco
NeitherExamination44@reddit
I like to mix sour cream in too which is why I could see where they were coming from with the yogurt… I gotta say though I’ve never seen tuna salad at a Mexican restaurant ever lol

A lot of Mediterranean style cook books recommend replacing mayo with plain greek yogurt when making tuna salad or sandwiches.
I can literally tell no difference.
DenseAstronomer3631@reddit
Like plain not sweet yogurt? If so you are forgiven because ik some people use that like diet mayo or sour cream
Nice-Tea-8972@reddit
Im a yogurt as diet mayo person LOL ty for the grace.
Syzergic@reddit (OP)
Of course, I’m not a monster
LincredibleOne@reddit
There’s photographic evidence directly above to the contrary…
___cliterati___@reddit

Nice-Tea-8972@reddit
Yogurt makes more sense than butter to me. so long as its PLAIN yogurt.
PsyxoticElixir@reddit
Where's the potato? That's the real crime
neep_pie@reddit
Yogurt seems fine. It's like sour cream and they're both sort of like mayo. Butter seems odd to me though. Also cheese other than Parmesan doesn't go well with seafood.
CinemaDork@reddit
Fried fish sandwiches sometimes come with American or cheddar cheese on them and I'm okay with that 👍 no one would call that fine dining of course. Hah
neep_pie@reddit
That's true. Not a very fishy fish, though. I guess it's good with fried white fish but I wouldn't want cheddar on salmon.
Ok_Caterpillar5564@reddit
There are loads of good cheese+seafood combinations. Lobster mac and cheese, tuna cheddar melts, shrimp alfredo, pizza with anchovies, oysters mornay, seafood tacos with cotija, salmon and cream cheese, seafood ravioli...and probably lots more.
The problem is that many seafoods are delicate, and many cheese are sharp and pungent, and that can be an unappealing combination, which people extrapolate to say that cheese should never go with seafood. But there are so many kinds of seafood, and so many kinds of cheese, and lots of them do pair, it's just about finding the right combinations. Usually just means using a milder cheese.
Topicalpimp@reddit
Cheddar often goes with tuna and mayo making a “tuna melt”.
Description_Friendly@reddit
Mostly true, but I feel Colby Jack pairs nicely.
cvaicunas69@reddit
This post is just karma farming at this point.
Educational-Ant-7485@reddit
Eating non-fresh fish with yoghurt can be poisonous, you shouldn't mix them
traumaqueen1128@reddit
See, the yogurt I can understand. I've used plain yogurt as a substitute for sour cream. I DON'T understand the cold chunks of butter!
doesthedog@reddit
In my family we mixed it with sour cream, salt and pepper and put it on spaghetti. It was delicious. I think with yoghurt you are fine, not sure about the butter
No_Significance1389@reddit
You need to add mayonnaise instead of yogurt. And then use it as a bread spread. I survived on this in my early 20's when money was tight.
NolieMali@reddit
With a touch of pickle juice.
dillhavarti@reddit
that's what mayo is for dude. mayo and tuna is literally just tuna salad
Vli37@reddit
In this instance . . .
No!
Butter doesn't instantly make everything better
🤦♂️
Daredevils999@reddit
Have you heard of mayonnaise per chance?
Aviendha13@reddit
Yeah most people use mayo or some variant thereof if they want it creamy. Not yogurt. wtf?
Plenty_Letterhead_91@reddit
I actually thought yogurt and tuna sounded good...
The butter though...
AlligatorFister@reddit

GenericAccount13579@reddit

lifeofbablo@reddit
Yeah, that’s how you end up with tuna salad that tastes suspiciously like vanilla pudding.
schmoe67@reddit
sweet and savory
LOUsername97@reddit
Let's not give up any ideas ok?
dalrymc1@reddit
I’m with you, take the ideas away and give OP a basic understanding of tastebuds. Just a simple understanding will do, it will eliminate abominations like this. Then again, I might be under thinking this and OP might make tuna salad with canned tuna, caraway seed, and Elmer’s school glue.
LOUsername97@reddit
Honestly, Elmer's glue sounds like a step up from yogurt and a chunk of unmelted butter
AAAPosts@reddit
Or bleach
SofaChillReview@reddit
Jokes aside, Pepper game changer but I’d also add sweet corn. You can actually make a buttery mayonnaise for tuna..just wouldn’t add butter on its own
jignha@reddit
Large amounts of black pepper to tuna salad is amazing. It's what Jersey Mike's adds to their tuna salad.
DrakonILD@reddit
Why does my tuna salad smell like bleach?
nonononononomammamia@reddit
I use plain yogurt instead of mayo in tuna salad/sandwiches.
Curious-Anywhere-612@reddit
If it’s plain yogurt that stuff kinda tastes like sour cream. That could taste decent
Serious_Swan_2371@reddit
More dairy = better
Acrobatic-Parsnip769@reddit
its cheese but with extra steps lol
OtherwiseSplit8875@reddit
Cheese is the worst part about this
dregan@reddit
No
FrillySteel@reddit
It's deconstructed mayo.
Hefe_Weizen@reddit
Yeah just spamming every type of dairy in your fridge onto food is more pathetic.
kyle__hinaba@reddit
Couldn’t you have at least mixed it all together before taking that picture. You don’t “somehow” make it worse if your intentions was to make it look disgusting. Incorporate it, put it on a piece of toast or cracker and it’ll “somehow” look a lot better. Rage bait of a post IMO.
Syzergic@reddit (OP)
You underestimate my incompetence, friend. In high school I used to make myself “nutrition paste” for breakfast, which was ground turkey, butter, cheese, and flour. Yes, flour.
Long_Ice5948@reddit
This is one of the weirdos food combos i have ever heard of.
Responsible-Cap-5827@reddit
Instead of mayo add an avocado. Total game changer. Maybe a little pickle relish.
_ladyfiona@reddit
Go to your room right now and think about what you've done
Ok-Round-8104@reddit
hahaha the butter chillin
Laceylolbug@reddit
No no no. Butter doesn't go in tuna salad. Neither does yogurt. Use mayo and some sweet relish and salt and pepper if you want a quick tuna salad.
Additional_Text_3962@reddit
Just add paprika powder, kewpie mayo etc
MetalJoe0@reddit
You're going to want to put some fat and some acid in the tuna. The mayo covers that nicely. Balsalmic, mustard, vinegar based hot sauce, or lemon juice are all good acids. The cheese is a nice touch. I'd skip the butter. If you toss some vegetables in there, you'll really be in business.
ThatGreenGuy8@reddit
You can't just throw stuff in a bowl and expect it to magically look good
Putsomesunglasseson@reddit
I’m not gonna lie every time I see someone eat straight up can’t tuna I don’t understand it, but the other day I was hungry but still trying to minimize my calories so I had what I called” deconstructed sushi” as a snack
Basically, half a can of tuna, a little bit of kewpie mayo, some diced cucumber sprinkled in. Then I would take a sheet of seaweed snack and spoon a bit onto it and eat it.
Honestly fucking delicious
Gengetsu_Huzoki@reddit
I had pasta with yogurt and tuna yesterday! Basic but after you feel full doesn't matter what you ate XD
Dorian-greys-picture@reddit
Just add some cottage cheese and this is the kind of thing fitness influencers will try to tell you tastes just like a tuna salad and is soooo filling
ForgottengenXer67@reddit
If you had baked that it would have been delicious. Opportunity lost.
Uchihagod53@reddit
What was the rationale behind the yogurt?
Syzergic@reddit (OP)
Sauce, I guess? Or like you know how you make tuna salad with mayo. Same color and consistency.
Bangkok_Dangeresque@reddit
Not all white creamy substances are interchangeable in food...
Syzergic@reddit (OP)
I’ve been informed of this when I tried to sub cream cheese for mayo on a grilled cheese
Consistent_Loquat860@reddit
Cream cheese in a grilled cheese is amazing- especially if its a hot ham and cheese
mensfrightsactivists@reddit
tbh cream cheese on a grilled cheese sounds frickin awesome. this concoction.. less so
SirRufusPigeon@reddit
Wait, cream cheese or Mayo on a grilled cheese? Isn’t it basically supposed to only be butter, bread and cheese?
Syzergic@reddit (OP)
Sir pigeon, you are one of today’s lucky 10,000. Substitute mayo for butter to grease a grilled cheese. Because mayo has protein, it creates a crispier, more even crust.
ZeePirate@reddit
That sounds much more reasonable than tuna and yogurt.
Especially the fact you heated up the yogurt
mildlywittyname@reddit
You mean you've done this food crime before and didn't learn your lesson?!
Syzergic@reddit (OP)
That was cream cheese. This was yogurt. And they were the same color and consistency.
LincredibleOne@reddit
Maybe next time you can try lotion, or shaving cream.
thevioletkat@reddit
I am incredibly concerned that they were the same consistency, does that mean that the yogurt had a cream cheese consistency or the cream cheese had a yogurt consistency? either way one of them is wrong.
Syzergic@reddit (OP)
Rounding error?
mildlywittyname@reddit
I think he means this time the substitute had the same consistency, which was yogurt instead of mayo. I don't agree it does but it's not quite as a big of difference as yogurt and cream cheese.
mildlywittyname@reddit

OP the comments on whether or not you enjoyed this are conflicting. Was it good? Would you do it again? Did you have other options or were these the only ingredients available? I have so many questions and I am afraid I can't stop laughing about this.
Syzergic@reddit (OP)
I had other options. Leftover pasta, frozen pierogis, even some frozen peas. And yet, this is what I chose. I can’t tell you why. That’s between last-night me and god. Or maybe the devil, hard to say.
It tasted fine, but I wouldn’t say it was more than the sum of its parts. And you know, in the same circumstances with better options, I might do it again. Not because it was good, just because I have a poor grasp on cause and effect. Like a child touching a hot stove.
andosp@reddit
Amazing. I don't care what anyone else says, you're a hero in my book.
