I like sailing

I apologize to our French subreddit members that your national flag is not hanging properly. The leash I was supposed to use broke, so I had to improvise a bit. When the waves calmed down, I put them up properly.

I was taught to remove fenders and stow them properly.. NEVER to sail a boat with them tied on stanchions and sitting on the deck.. Lazy, sloppy and unsafe.

For longer journeys the fenders are removed. I'm too lazy to put the fenders away for a 20-hour tour. So far, no one has ever fallen overboard on my boat because of fenders. But generally I agree with you.

I've noticed there's a kind of bell curve when it comes to fenders. One one side there's the inexperienced with them dangling over the side. In the middle there's most people who have the stow them not show them philosophy, and on the far side there's a group of been there done that's who no longer care, so longas they aren't dragging in the water.

Yes... I hang my fenders from the back of the boat. In this video it not only looks amateurish but it's also a tripping hazard... You know anyone moving forward is gonna kick that fender out of the way. The clove hitch is also almost open. You can do this in calm seas on short sails but this ain't that.

You can do whatever you want on your boat. A fender has never bothered me at anything.

You never need to do anything on the foredeck while at sea?

Not really, with such short stages I can do everything from the cockpit. For longer trips, the fenders go to the rear of the boat. But since the destination port didn't offer much protection from waves, I left the fenders out.

Indeed. And I will judge others accordingly.

I have two sets of fenders.. One set is attached to our dock longitudinally.. The other is stowed to be used if we go somewhere else.. Having sailed for fifty years - this change made sense to me in saving steps and to be honest - it took an embarrassingly long time to do this.. but when we leave the dock there are no fenders to lift, to untie, to stow and these steps are not done on the way back in either.. Now that said I have many sails and I am not lazy about using the correct one for the conditions..

Where was this? About two weeks ago I did a nice sail from Guernsey to the Scillies in very similar conditions. \~20kts SW turning NW with the wind calming down once we were due south of Lands End. I guess that firday was also good sailing weather. At that point we were running toward Dartmouth.

I live about as far from the ocean as you can get, and have never been sailing. But I like sailing too. Just wish I could do something about it.
