Is the 5800X3D a worthwhile upgrade to a 5600X?

Right now I have a 5600X and a 3080 in my build.. like a lot of others this weekend I played a lot of the BF6 open beta and it seems like it’s a more CPU bound game… at 1440p/ultra I’m getting between 65-85 fps.
Would I see a worthwhile performance boost on a 5800X3D in CPU bound games? Like an idiot I got impatient waiting for AM5 and built this in 2021 so I’ve limited my upgrade options.
CaptainCookers@reddit
5700x3d sure, you can literally almost hop on am5 with the price of a 5800x3d
Mixter_Master@reddit
HW Unboxed just did a video to answer this very question.
TLDR, you will see an improvement, but at 1440p, you'll need an RTX 5080 of 5090 to REALLY see the difference.
Personally, I'll be holding onto my 5600 for another generation or two.

MrPapis@reddit
But for bf6 5600 is just not good enough anymore. Well 6 cores in general just pretty much got dumped. Maybe when it's out of beta it will be better but probably not a lot.
I've been telling people off 6 cores for midrange/higher end PC's for a year now and I feel like BF6 is probably the first very popular/non niche game that basically requires 8 cores.
Mixter_Master@reddit
If only I cared about playing BF6...
Good to know there is a limitation, but not one that will impact me.
MrPapis@reddit
I didn't ask you to.
BigSmackisBack@reddit
Yup, while the 5800x3d is notably faster its the price that makes it unwise, get one cheap on ebay or whatever and yeah absolutely do it.
Mixter_Master@reddit
For the insane prices I have been seeing the 5800x3d chips for alone, it's almost viable to get a b650 motherboard, r5 7600 and ddr5 ram instead.
MrPapis@reddit
The problem with this is that 6cores in general are not great for bf6 it's a really CPU bound game and you really want an 8 core CPU minimum. It even utilizes 16cores.
Though modern 6 cores still are somewhat decent but they are maxed out in bf6.
Everyone and their mother on a 5600x with a decent/good gpu should have gotten a 5700x3d by now. And unfortunately that thing is now also EOL.
NovusMagister@reddit
This is the way. Too many people addicted to high end parts who forget what generational improvement does for performance...
WarEagleGo@reddit
:)
ImYourDade@reddit
Careful man, people downvoted like crazy if you suggest anything other than x3d at any price point xD
CorkyBingBong@reddit
I paid about $140 for a lightly used 5800x3D about a month ago after selling my 5800x. I’m happy with improvement in 1% lows and the modest average FPS bump. I also just kind of wanted to be on the pinnacle of the AM4 platform.
Blue-150@reddit
Ya I'm still surprised how many 5800x3d recommendations I see when am5 combos sell for less brand new
Pidjinus@reddit
The x3d chips will stabilize the lows a lot. I know this from personal experience, at least at 1440p (5800x to 5800x3d). Multiplayer games would also benefits. I would expect even better results when transitioning from a 5600. This il with a lesser gpu too.
5800x3d/5700x3d is a good upgrade over a 5600 but only if the price is right. Something like 150$ ..i guess second hand is fine too, if the second market is healty, where op resides.
ishootforfree@reddit
Techspot recently came to the same conclusion as well, I'd say go for it OP 👍 5800x3D will perform well for years to come.
brondonschwab@reddit
Techspot and HUB are the same
SilverKnightOfMagic@reddit
yeah upgrade it to an x3D and skip am5
paulwolf20@reddit
It's the same person...
Inside-Line@reddit
I came from a 5600 and upgraded to a 5700x3D (when they were super cheap).
Reviewers mention averages a lot but I noticed a huge reduction in stutter and improvement in smoothness. Also with more and more games are becoming CPU heavy, I think its a decent upgrade if you can't go AM5 yet.
DC9708@reddit
I also went from 5600 to 5700x3d when they were super cheap(paid $120 for mine). I also noticed a big improvement in overall smoothness. I’d still go AM5 over 5800x3d at current prices though. Micro center had a 7600x3d bundle for $400 bucks a few weeks ago vs $300-$350 for a 5800x3d online which would be way better.
Inside-Line@reddit
The 7600x3D bundle is an amazing deal. Not only do you get a killer gaming CPU but you also get an upgrade path to whatever succeeds the 9800x3D, when it becomes cheaper 2-3 years from now.
Also a thing to consider is that reviewers will review CPUs on very clean and optimized systems. 99% of us game with discord, browsers, youtube, and god knows what other bloatware running in the background. I think a lot of the smoothness of upgrading from the 5600 was also just going 6 core to 8 core.
pimpostrous@reddit
Not worthwhile. unless you can land one for the $150 range. Otherwise, that money would be better spent saving for a new GPU or going AM5. You can get a 9600x or 265K system for around 400 with deals. Both would be much better upgrades than a 5800x3d. The 5800x3d performs admirably for AM4, but many current non X3D chips can beat it out.
Current_Finding_4066@reddit
If your GPU has close to 100 utilisation, then no. If no, then yrs
ATOJAR@reddit
It depends on the game, when I upgraded from a 5600X to my current 5800X3D I remember in some games I saw an uplift of 30fps in some games, others not so much, one thing I did notice was my 1% lows were much better.
definitlyitsbutter@reddit
Not with its prices. Even the 5700x3d do3s not make financial sense. Sell your old stuff on ebay and go am5. Selling mobo, ram and cpu and getting a 7600x, b650 and 16gb ddr5 6000 will perform the same as a 5700x3d and cost the same.
A-Llama-Snackbar@reddit
Upgraded my 5600x to 5700x3d with a 3080ti still in, noticeable difference in the lows and much smoother experience. Possible performance increases too but might just be the lows making it feel better, haven't cared to check yet
RedBoxSquare@reddit
Performance wise, yes, it is equal to a single generation uplift without a socket change.
Price to performance, no, because these chips are so expensive now that you can buy a 7600X with a motherboard and still come out cheaper.
Antenoralol@reddit
AM5 would be better option at this point.
Firesw0rd@reddit
If you play cpu have games, even the 5700x3d would be a good improvement.
DCMBRbeats@reddit
So, when I still had my old 3070, the jump to the 5700X3D (in my case) just barely touched the FPS, which is supported by me playing at 4K and therefore being mostly GPU bound. Therefore, the jump to a new GPU (7800XT) made a much bigger difference.
Though, in games that are high fps like Fortnite or Rocket League, I found that it helped a lot with .1 lows, so if competitive gaming is something you do much of, maybe it is worth it if you get it for a good price! I also found that if you use a lot of FSR/DLSS or FG/LS, the newer CPU handled it much better than the old one.
So, I’d say it depends on the use case. For story driven games, I would not do it. If you use Upscaling and FG, play games with high fps or are generally a competitive gamer, I’d say go for it and upgrade the gpu as needed. You can easily skip AM5 with one of those I‘d say.
KFC_Junior@reddit
Battlefield 6 is the most unoptimised bullshit ive ever seen lmao. 5800x3d and 10th gen i7 will somehow both outperform a 9700x
Plenty-Pudding-7429@reddit
I don’t think you can get the 5800X3D anymore unless you go second hand.
I have the 5700X3D which is honestly brilliant. I was originally after the 5800 but couldn’t find a new one anywhere,
Biggeordiegeek@reddit
For me, the upgrade to the 5700X3D, the 5800X3D is no longer being made and near impossible to find at a decent price
Hasn’t so much as jumped performance massively, but it has smooth out the lows by a lot
The jump from 3070 to 9070XT boosted my frames a lot
nepnep1111@reddit
The 5700X3D is discontinued as well and not worth buying at current pricing
Biggeordiegeek@reddit
That’s weird seems very very available from what I can see, plenty of stock
Downtown-Ice-5022@reddit
Where can I buy a 5700x3d reputably right now? Amazon is no new stock as well as Newegg
Biggeordiegeek@reddit
Amazon have a bunch of stock at £218.99
Downtown-Ice-5022@reddit
Can you link me? In chat if needed. I am not seeing that
Rich-8080@reddit
This is the answer I was looking for. I still run a 3070 with a 5600. Been eyeing up a 9070xt. Now I think I should go for it.
Biggeordiegeek@reddit
I was looking at upgrading to a 7600X but an emergency vet situation had me change plan and I got the 5700X3D and it’s been class
The 9070XT was a great jump as well, games that struggled before due to VRAM issues
Rich-8080@reddit
My biggest struggle right now is playing Reforger. Doest go much above 40fps and sometimes sinks to 10fps which is unplayable.
Biggeordiegeek@reddit
Honestly had they gotten a couple more GB in there it would have kept the card going for longer
The underlying chip is great, just hampered by a miserable amount of VRAM
Rich-8080@reddit
Absolutely. It's done me well to be fair. Can I ask what Mobo you're running? I have a Rog strix B550
Biggeordiegeek@reddit
B570 Asrock Steel Legend
paulerxx@reddit
Then the settings down to high/medium. See what your FPS is
heepofsheep@reddit (OP)
Oh yeah I’ve tried that… FPS doesn’t seem to change much when lowering the settings.
paulerxx@reddit
Def a cpu issue then ;/
heepofsheep@reddit (OP)
Yup! It’s either upgrade to a 5800X3D or drop $1k on a 9800X3D, mobo, and ram.
Plenty-Industries@reddit
Do you have a microcenter you're willing to travel to?
heepofsheep@reddit (OP)
I do
Plenty-Industries@reddit
Look at their Ryzen 7000 & 9000 bundles.
9800X3D bundle with RAM and motherboard for $600.
7800X3D bundle for $550
paulerxx@reddit
I have a 5700X3D and getting around 100-130 with a RX6800 at high settings. FSR quality at 3440x1440
1337llama@reddit
The 5600x is still pretty decent enough, that unless you get a particularly good deal on a 5800x3d or 5700x3d, it's probably better to save and put it towards an am5 build. I upgraded to a 5700x3d from a 5600x when it was like 130, and that was good for reducing stutters and 1 percent lows, but it wasn't a night and day difference. Upgrading the GPU made a bigger difference.
VanWesley@reddit
Yes but only if you can find it at a reasonable price.
SilentBobVG@reddit
What’s your CPU usage? Using the in game performance monitor what’s the frame render time for both GPU and CPU?
heepofsheep@reddit (OP)
Where do you see frame render time in the overlay?
SilentBobVG@reddit
Change the overlay to simple, then it’ll show the fps and the frame time beside it
JamesBigglesworth@reddit
My fps always says "n/a" on the overlay. Even msi afterburner can't read the fps in bf6. I was wondering if it was just a beta bug but even after restart same thing.
heepofsheep@reddit (OP)
CPU is 76/13.1 and GPU is 91/11
CPU usage between 85-90% and GPU is 90-99%. Though they both fluctuate a lot depending on the map and what’s happening in the game.
SilentBobVG@reddit
Definitely CPU limited then, have you tried DLSS quality? How much is the 5800X3D you’re looking at buying?
heepofsheep@reddit (OP)
Changing DLSS quality doesn’t change the FPS… I usually have it set to DLAA. Putting everything on the absolute lowest settings gains me about 10-15fps compared to everything maxed out.
JambaJake@reddit
Similar situation but can’t justify the upgrade when there aren’t many 5800x3d available at this point. just saving up for an am5 upgrade
Pokermuffin@reddit
I did that jump same CPU and GPU and didn’t see much of a difference other than more heat. However if you upgrade your GPU you might see a difference. I’d just upgrade platforms especially with the 7600x bundles being 500$ or so.
Framed-Photo@reddit
The CPU limits your maximum possible FPS, regardless of settings. That's what you have to remember.
So ignore the fact that you don't have a 5090 for a second when looking at these benchmarks, just see the framerate and think if those numbers are high enough for you.
For example, in that HUB video the top comment linked, in Marvel Rivals at 1080p medium the 5600 got 120 fps with lows in the 80's, and the 5800X3D got 175 with lows in the 130's. Sure you don't have a 5090, but you could EASILY hit 120 on a much weaker GPU, especially in competitive games where you're likely to lower your settings and run heavy upscaling.
So is 120 with lows in the 80's enough for you in that game, or would the 5800X3D's improvement be nice to have? Because if you stick with your 5600, you're not getting past 120 no matter what settings you run at.
For me, I upgraded from a 5600 to a 5700X3D and it was worth every penny, would do it again in a heartbeat. But if you're okay with the numbers you're currently getting then don't bother upgrading.
blackflagnirvana@reddit
It'll get you to a consistent 120-140 FPS range, I'd say it's worth it if you don't want to build a new system
Warskull@reddit
I don't think you can upgrade at this point. They stopped making the 5800X3D and the 5700X3D so any CPU you find is likely to be $600+. If you find either the 5800X3D or the 5700X3D for a sane price it would be worth the upgrade, but I highly doubt you will.
Weird-Competition-36@reddit
Don't think that worth.
milky_pichael@reddit
I believe Frostbite is a pretty CPU intensive engine, especially running battlefield with all the different players, vehicles, destruction and physics calculations.
I reckon you'd get a nice uplift, especially 1% lows with the 5800x3d.
matter of fact i've got one and a 3070 at 1440p so maybe i'll play that today and come back here to report performance
natflade@reddit
If you can somehow find a 5800x3d or more like a 5700x3d under $200 than do it. Anything more and you might as well look into moving onto the next socket a bit more down the road.
Potential-View3257@reddit
As long as you can find a reasonable price it’s a sizable improvement. Just don’t waste too much money if you can just spend a little more to go to AM5.
I went from a 7600 to a 7800X3D without changed my GOU and I average 40-60 more FPS in Marvel Rivals and about 15 - 25 FPS on Battlefield 6
Mixter_Master@reddit
For the insane prices I have been seeing the 5800x3d chips for alone (3-350 usd), it's almost viable to hop on eBay and get a b650 motherboard (~100), r5 7600 (~150) and 32gb ddr5 ram (~80) instead.
Then you've got the same performance and an upgrade path.
Potential-View3257@reddit
Agreed, especially when you can buy a 7800 X3D for 350 - 375 and it dumps on the 5800 X3D
