Went to a movie theater for the first time in years

...and holy shit people just do whatever the fuck they want now. Woman next to us was scrolling TicTok the entire movie while her date watched the movie. Guy on our row took two, long phone calls at full volume. Someone behind us was vaping weed. Employees walked by during some of this and obviously give no shits. Hugged my home theater equipment when I came home. Never leaving home again for a movie unless I have to.
superbad@reddit
I go to a local independent theatre. It seems like people that go there care more about movies. At least, I donāt see that kind of bad behaviour there.
bgroins@reddit (OP)
This is probably the way. I was at a large AMC in Los Angeles.
cavey00@reddit
Large AMC in LA sounds about right. Hit a high cost of living suburb on a weekday night if they are playing what you want. Likely a better experience. Also if you have a small group of friends who all want to see the movie, consider renting the theater out and splitting the cost. Itās cheaper than you think it is. Itāll be one of their smaller theaters but who cares when thereās only a dozen or two of your friends and family there.
Charleston2Seattle@reddit
How much have you paid in the last for renting out a theater?
hardhatgirl@reddit
Oregonian here. In 2020 it was 100.00
Far-Lingonberry-256@reddit
Right so that total is probably about $400 now.
LocalInactivist@reddit
$100? Flat fee? How much are regular tickets?
therealbabwe@reddit
The metro here in Eugene even throws in concession credits last I checked it was like 10 bucks a person with popcorn and drinks
earthican-earthican@reddit
Greetings fellow Eugenie!! We did that, rented the Metro and watched Lego Batman there as a family - it was the grandkidsā first āgo to the moviesā experience. It was awesome!!! š
quasi2022@reddit
Yay fellow Eugenians!!
earthican-earthican@reddit
Somehow Eugene is quintessential GenX, to me (maybe because this is where I lived in 1991 when the book Generation X came out). Longtime Eugenians, remember when KZEL helped get our teenage asses out of bed at 7:30 every morning?? š„°
hasnt_been_your_day@reddit
Third Eugenian chiming in! I knew the big theaters did this, but not that the Metro did, this is awesome to hear. i totally know what I'm doing for my next birthday now
earthican-earthican@reddit
Yessss!! And Hello, from near the Albertsons on 30th & Hilyard!! (So cool to stumble upon other Eugene people in this sub - now I will always know that Iām never alone! š„¹)
TheRenownMrBrown@reddit
Dang. I miss Albertsons. Theyāve all left us here in Orlando. Quite the bummer.
Olelander@reddit
Another Eugenian here! Weāve rented the metro for work parties in the past, and yeah it has always come with concession credits at like $15-$20 per person.
earthican-earthican@reddit
There are dozens of us on here, dozens!! So cool to hear from yāall!!!
Celticquestful@reddit
That's an AMAZING idea!
earthican-earthican@reddit
And also, it is amazing to stumble upon my fellow Eugene people right here in a massive subreddit!
Typical_Version_7487@reddit
Never been to the Metro but I wanted to chime in being from Springfield. š
WeAreAllMycelium@reddit
It works out cheaper. Iāve thrown so many parties this way, including the original Sex and The City Movies and the shoe pictures were freaking Awesome
Ok_Life_5176@reddit
Almost that much!!
hardhatgirl@reddit
That little independent theater is closed now. But tickets were 9.00 I think.
They didn't continue to offer that, it was a covid thing.
hardhatgirl@reddit
That little independent theater is closed now. But tickets were 9.00 I think.

old_namewasnt_best@reddit
Wait, you can rent out a whole movie theater for the price of a ticket, a small popcorn, and a Coke?
azgolfing@reddit
If you're Elvis
SillyImprovement9398@reddit
š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
hardhatgirl@reddit
It was a small independent theater, and covid was new. I dont know that they kept up the offer.
What crazy expensive city do you live in?! Im guessing Seattle?
old_namewasnt_best@reddit
I live in a city where we use a bit of sarcasm. Lol. Sorry about that.
hardhatgirl@reddit
Oh thats funny. I should have guessed. Duh. Lol
old_namewasnt_best@reddit
It's that hard hat you're wearing, girl. It's hard for things to get in! Lol.
hardhatgirl@reddit
Lol!!
Ferrindel@reddit
Assuming you have the Movie Club membership, otherwise itās double.
judgeejudger@reddit
$150 in Chicago but thatās not for first-run movies. They have a list to pick from.
molsmama@reddit
What?! Really?!?! $100-$150?? For movies?? Have I been living in a cave?
LordAldricQAmoryIII@reddit
That's not for a single movie ticket, it's to rent out an entire auditorium. Get a group of friends together to pitch in, friends who you know won't be obnoxious, and it's well worth it. I'd even consider splurging for a special occasion to just have the whole auditorium to myself!
Marathonmanjh@reddit
ārenting out a theaterā
outragednitpicker@reddit
I didnāt know that existed. What theatre?
Weird-Conflict-3066@reddit
Most will do this, I have for $100 rented out a screen at Marcus theaters for my child's birthday party.
judgeejudger@reddit
Check out both the AMC & Regal websites
outragednitpicker@reddit
Thanks!
Kodiak01@reddit
Cinemark will do private screenings of 1st run films, but you have to literally buy every seat in the auditorium.
SheriffBartholomew@reddit
WHAT? That's like 4 tickets. Why would they rent out the entire theater for the price of 4 tickets?
hardhatgirl@reddit
It was covid. Nobody was leaving the house. They just wanted to stay in business.
Cheepshooter@reddit
That's a steal! Tickets for 5 people this July was $75. After popcorn and drinks, we were in it for $120+.
Aromatic_Ad_7238@reddit
Small theaters work with you. I traveled with a high school marching band, orchestra for various competitions. We could find a theater that would l lease the whole theater to ourselves. We just needed to book it linea month's in advance
royal_scam@reddit
I think those prices might be for COVID times. We did it a few times in 2020 for children's bday parties at around $100.
SubstanceNo1544@reddit
If you are in portland make the trip to St John's theater out in nopo, very worth it. Dank pizza and beer or wine to wash it down
aprilmoonflower@reddit
Ypu can rent one in Vermont for $75 for the theater and you can bring your own movie too if you want
justbecauseiluvthis@reddit
$150, Bay area, CA. I think at $200 kr 250, they just hand you the cords and let you do whatever the heck you want.
I go to late showings a lot and never have any rudeness or problems. There are very few people usually though.
cavey00@reddit
Las Vegas itās $360. You need about 20 people splitting it to make it worth while.
Charleston2Seattle@reddit
Wow, that IS cheap!
NozakiMufasa@reddit
Its fun for playing video games. A friend like completed all of Red Dead Redemption 2 at the movie theatre
DiamondEyesFlamingo@reddit
My city is much smaller than LA but we have two AMC theaters and itās like they attract all the people that donāt give a flying fudge that theyāre ruining the movie experience for everyone else.
Merciless_Soup@reddit
Thanks! That's a life pro tip I did not know existed right there. I usually just try to catch an early matinee. Shitheads tend to not be early risers.
cavey00@reddit
Too true. This definitely applies to outdoor activities. I like hiking and the best time to do it is right when the sun rises. Trail is quiet and peaceful. Typically Iāll run into the fuckbois with no shirt and only a backpack with music blasting out of it on my way back to the car. Ever heard of earbuds guy? Enjoy your skin cancer.
SashaPurrs05682@reddit
Wow. Thanks!! This is now one of my āmust haveā criteria for the next area I move to. Currently living in an overpriced humorless workaholic city. Canāt wait to gtf out of here and back to civilization. So glad you expanded my bucket list!
Swimming-Pride5012@reddit
Did this during COVID for Valentine's Day. Our local B&B Theater advertised it. $100 to rent the entire theater. My wife and I did a date to watch When Harry Met Sally. It was a nice return to "normal" during all the crazy.
DragYouDownToHell@reddit
I was in a movie club here that did this. We'd usually get 10-30 to show up per showing, but since we did it weekly, we had a flat rate deal with the theater for $5 per person, and that included popcorn and a small soda. It was great, and zero bullshit during the movie.
Yfrontdude@reddit
Weekday night? First showing on a Tuesday. Nearly empty theater save for a handful on introverts.
Photografeels@reddit
Had the exact opposite at AMCās in LA (Westside). People engage with the movies sure, but almost everyone is attentive to the filmās. It actually feels like a better viewing experience then east coast theaters and people paying attention
macklin_sob@reddit
I went to Cinemark for several movies and really only had terrible experience at the last one. People bought tickets at the last minute so came in and loudly tried to organize separate seats while the opening of the movie played. Then the 2 people next to us kept checking texts the whole time.
WorthBreath9109@reddit
Hopefully it wasnāt the AMC in Century City. I love that one for Q&As!
Mr_Perfect22@reddit
I was about to say that's because of where you live man. I live in the Midwest and haven't encountered this here, but when I lived in DC I saw people act like this in certain theaters.
WorthBreath9109@reddit
Hated DC theater audiences. Loved that the Landmark had no cell service down there so that people wouldnāt be in their phones.
OppressorTron@reddit
Nobody wants to say the quiet part out loud huh?
cashewclues@reddit
What? That there are people of all colors acting a fool in these places? Because people of all colors and ages are acting a fool in these places. This is a no home training, entitlement problem that that orange man fomented. First, people didnāt want to wear masks and now you canāt make anyone to do anything thatās beneficial to whole unless it benefits them first.
Anyway, go look up videos of people watching Minecraft in theaters and tell me what you see. Go on.
EmmyNoetherRing@reddit
I must be in a better part of NOVA, or picking better times to goĀ
RemySchaefer3@reddit
Especially in DC and NOVA - super entitled types.
No_Wheel_702@reddit
Century City? Itās the absolute worst!
Sea-End-4841@reddit
We go to AMC in Los Angeles weekly and never experience this.
AMC4x4@reddit
Same on Long Island. It's why I canceled my A-List when they increased the charge. I decided I was done torturing myself with inconsiderate SOB's.
edasto42@reddit
Iām in Long Beach and go to big theaters all the time ($5 Tuesday and Thursdays are clutch) and really donāt see these issues. Honestly itās theater location specific it seems for these issues.
Related have you gone to seen a film at the COSM theater yet? Thatās something I really want to experience
leafandvine89@reddit
Also In Long Beach, which movie theaters have $5 deals? Would love to take advantage of that great price!
edasto42@reddit
LBC represent! Itās the one at Lakewood mall.

I hadn't heard of this but based on the description sounds a little like IMAX (?)
edasto42@reddit

MartyMcFlysBrother@reddit
Worth mentioning⦠the Sphere is not cheap. But itās worth it.
Several-Avocado783@reddit
I went to Towne Center after covid restrictions lifted. It was the opposite of respectful silence. I didnāt go back for a couple of years. Things are somewhat better.
poulan9@reddit

uninspired@reddit
I really wanted to go when they were running the Matrix
ExactPhilosopher2666@reddit

Cassedaway@reddit
I've seen COSM on tik tok and cant wait until they expand to the East! Nobody is scrolling their phone through that.
ObsessedByCruelty@reddit
Which AMC? I go to City Walk and it's not terrible but it is bad sometimes. I would recommend hitting the Alamo Drafthouse, they have zero tolerance for speaking, electronics, etc.
KingGuzzie@reddit
This is the reason lol i have a more independant theatre by my house in the suburbs of Los Angeles that i frequent and its not like this at all. So much so that a few visits in the past we had a usher bring it to the attention of someone there that their phone was too bright, was told to turn it off or leave. So im guessing its the theatre that is the problem.
ManiacSpiderTrash@reddit
Local is the way to go for sure if it's an option. My local independent theater is the fucking best, I don't fuck with chains anymore. $7 tickets for a matinee, $9 at night. 2 tickets, popcorn and 2 drinks with refills is $20. They work their asses off to keep the place clean and decent; they'll absolutely chuck someone out for causing a disturbance. During Covid they shut down and the owners kept paying their employees out of their own pockets. I really hope more independent theaters start making a comeback.
Alternative_Sort_404@reddit
The only theater we have within a ½ hour drive is a Smittyās - food and drinks served, people on their phones constantly, sometimes random kiddos wandering around, and they do t turn the lights all the way off anymore⦠100% not worth going. Although we went to see Naked Gun, so it wasnāt a serious film, but Iām all set with that atmosphere, regardless
death_hen@reddit
I went to Smittyās in Topsham for the first time last week! I had known about it for a while, and had higher expectations. The seating and layout were atrocious, but actually the food was kinda good.
lectroid@reddit
If youāre in LA you want to hit up the independents. Vista, Laemmle, Egyptian, NuArt, any of the American Cinematheque places.
If you want to see a mainstream first run film (Weapons, Jurassic Park etc) try and avoid opening weekends. Weekends in general will be way more crowded with a bunch of jerks. If you can swing it, weekday matinees are what you want. Weekend matinees are better than evenings, at least.
ThirstyWolfSpider@reddit
And Vidiots' Eagle theater for both older movies and pre-releases (though for those you probably need a membership; I only hear of them through the newsletter, but they're also free a good amount of the time).
lectroid@reddit
Is that the one at the old Silent Movie Theater on Fairfax? I loved that place back in the Cinefamily days. Pity the guy running it turned out to be such a douche canoe.
death_hen@reddit
That one is now Brain Dead Studios, run by a clothing/lifestyle brand that is also a bunch of cinephiles. studios.wearebraindead.com
NewPhoneWhoDys@reddit
I miss that place and old Fairfax in general. At is still least Canter's is still there!
ThirstyWolfSpider@reddit
Nah, that's a different one. Vidiots/Eagle is in Eagle Rock.
potchie626@reddit
Miracle Mile will be shown there later this year, with a Q&A/appearance by the writer. Classic Gen X film.
FairEstablishment623@reddit
That movie shook me to my core! I love seeing the fairfax district, and what it used to look like. A great flick, until the end. That shit sucked hard, because of the truths and irony of the tar pit. Lol
timebeing@reddit
Iāve had good luck at Alamo Draft house too.
EndElectoralCollege3@reddit
Also Art Theater Long Beach
uninspired@reddit
I'll add he Culver Theater. It's not independent (owned by Amazon), but Culver is filled with industry folks who really care (and the Culver Theater does a good job at curation. Monthly themes and throwback movies on Monday nights. I love going to see movies I didn't see on the big screen for their original runs)
lectroid@reddit
I havenāt lived down there for a while, so my info is about 10 years out of date.
Groundbreaking-Bar89@reddit
Thatās funny because when you mentioned caption weed, I assumed it was LA.
pullmyfinger222@reddit
There you go. LA is and always has been a cesspool. If they wanted to give California an enema, they'd stick the tube in LA.
raf_boy@reddit
Which one?
Also in L.A., and I just got an AMC gift certificate for my birthday, even though I haven't been to a movie theater in about 8 years.
DrStrangerlover@reddit
See if you live near the Alamo Drafthouse in LA. They actually kick you out of the theater if you pull your phone out during the movie or talk and they post the rules of conduct all over the lobby.
LifeResetP90X3@reddit
Your first mistake was Los Angeles
_Itsonlyforever_@reddit
I miss the ArcLight, none of that would've ever happened at an ArcLight
NewPhoneWhoDys@reddit
If you're in LA go to the New Beverly! Or anything at American Conemathique
Lynnxa@reddit
Which AMC in Los Angeles did you go to and what time was the movie?
Iām in Los Angeles, have AMCās A-List, go to 4 movies a week most weeks and have only had a problem with another theater goer once. The person was on their phone but stopped after I said something to them.
This was the exception, though, all the other times Iāve gone the other movie goers have been fine.
Please give it another shotāmaybe at a different location as Iāve not found your experience to be usual at the AMC locations I go to.
EndElectoralCollege3@reddit
A-Lister here. I flip flop between AMC Norwalk and AMC Rolling Hills, usually on Sundays. No drama just movie fans for the most part.
bostonjenny81@reddit
Same here! Signing up for A-List was a smart move bc even just going once or twice pays well over what I spend on membership
Significant-Dance-43@reddit
This^ +1 (only Iām in Nashville, TN and have the Regal equivalent of AMC A-List). Never had an issue once the movie begins. Previews though⦠now that they stream their previews even before a theater preview⦠folks have the gift of gab.
KC_experience@reddit
Itās weird. I got to AMC as itās my only local theater chain (and their headquarters is 15 minutes away) and I never have the issues youāre seeing. No phone calls, no tic tok, no vaping.
beebs914@reddit
AMC where Iām at a bit north of Sacramento is never busy. Usually go to a matinee for a new movie 1-2 days after release (Saturday or Sunday) and usually me and my wife are the only ones in the theater or there is about 10 people max there. Itās Honestly really nice. Probably helps thereās a studio movie grill within 15 minutes I imagine most people go there
VeganTripe@reddit
Go to Arclight. At least, i remembered Arclight not being so gross and they did have ushers who did their job.
LizF0311@reddit
Regency is the way. Old, outdated, sticky floors like the 90s, and cheap tickets. No influencers appear to be in attendance. (Thereās one in Pasadena.)
bobniborg1@reddit
We saw Coraline and Jurassic world in la AMC (2 different ones) and had none of these issues. Maybe a bad showing?
Hyperion1144@reddit
The problem is Los Angeles.
Not AMC.
Wil-low@reddit
Yes. I live about an hour outside New York City. The theaters nearby are generally a decent experience. The few times I went to showings in Manhattan it was like going to a club that happened to have a movie playing.
druidcitychef@reddit
Yeh..I always go "over the mountain" to the suburbs for movies. I go at least once a month , rarely any issues. The one time there was -the staff dealt with it, escorted them out, apologized, then gave everyone free vouchers.
Send an email to AMC. I promise you they will respond.
remy780@reddit
I mean, LA is very much a blue area. Which means respect and personal responsibility are out the window on principle. Sorry you had this experience. Maybe try a drive in?
Crypto9oob@reddit
Try the Alamo theaters. No cell phone policy and they enforce it!,
jmancini1340@reddit
Fuck AMCs they are all disgusting
birddingus@reddit
We went to an amc last night and vowed to never return
Sarsmi@reddit
I patronized Alamo Drafthouse for years (in Austin), up until I read that their employees were not treated or compensated well. They run a PSA about not talking before the movie runs. For a while it was just a voicemail recording of a woman who was angry about getting kicked out and very worked up about being asked to silence her phone.
Anyways, local theaters will do better by you, they have more reason to care.
PurpleFlower99@reddit
Go on a weekday afternoon
bannana@reddit
day of the week and time are key to enjoying a theater experience - out last time out was wed @ 3pm and there was a single other person in the theater with us. NEVER, ever go on a fri or sat at any time of the day or night, sun only for the last showing after 9pm. and never go during opening week for anything unless it's the early matinee and even then I'd probably stay away.
whhaaaaaatttt@reddit
Lmao you can't possibly think this is representative of 95% of movie theaters even in the US
FtonKaren@reddit
My cityās only theater had a lot of ignorant folk before Covid I canāt see anything havenāt gotten better in five years
bgroins@reddit (OP)
No, I can't because I didn't say anything like that. I didn't quote "95%" of anything. I didn't talk about the US. I shared a personal anecdote.
Oppositeofhairy@reddit
AMC has the majority of the theaters where I live too. We Ā pay 20 something a month to see up to 4 movies a week. Itās nice because itās so damned hot in the Phoenix area, and gives us something to do. Ā There are some locations I just donāt go to. I donāt even bother going to the closest one to the house anymore because it just got bad.Ā
There should be others somewhat in your area that are probably in a better area thatās more enjoyable to watch.Ā
Alternatively, I also tend to go to the first showings of the day. Itās guaranteed the theaters are clean, less people are there, and Ā the ones who are tend to be a bit less self centered and aware of others around them.Ā
Best is when you go to a movie and zero people are there. Recently made the mistake of feeling nostalgic and wanting to see a campy horror film, and wish now I didnāt know what they did last summer. (That was about the worst movie Iāve seen in a very long time). But I was glad we were alone. We were yelling at the screen a lot.Ā
I like my setup at home and went full Sonos. Arc, mini sub, and a pair of era 100s, Ā but itās just not the same.Ā
Whole_Craft_1106@reddit
I was wondering where you were. It got bad for awhile in my area, but its been getting better.
My favorite time to go is early dinner time on the $5 Tuesday. Less people.
Straight-Tune-5894@reddit
Yeah amc ad universal seems to have a better behaving crowd, probably because of the tourists. When you buy your tix online they email you a $5 parking voucher. Plus they serve alcohol.
Sparklemagic2002@reddit
I was going to suggest you check out the Arclight theater on Sunset Blvd. I went to Google to double check the spelling and saw it closed in 2021. That is a real bummer. We went there to see a movie when we were in town for vacation several years ago. Classiest theater Iāve ever been to by a mile.

Itās ok. Californias isnāt for everyone. Not all folks can be successful here. It takes a certain type of fortitude. Coming from Chicago to here was an awakening to where I want to be in the world. Looking back to where I was I realized that SoCal in specific has everything I thought Chicago could offer but didnāt. But the chance moving out here a few years ago was a gift. The diversity I wanted in people (I honestly hated being surrounded by mostly white folks most of my life), the strong communities that have welcomed me, along with opening up new career paths that I wasnāt expecting have been amazing. And honestly when folks do realize that theyāre not cut out to live here and do make that move Iām glad for them and for the rest of us. Its the same in Memphis TN, I think the theater model of release for movies is completely broken and should be abandoned by Hollywood.
The last movie I went to was Top Gun Maverick, and the lady in front of me kept rubbing super powerful tea tree oil on her forehead. It was so bad it the vapor was burning her eyes.
I got one of the staff who was kind of dismissive at first, then I asked her to come to my seat. As soon as she got there, and smelled it she she offered me a refund.

This surprises me. I've lived all over the country and love going to the movies. The movie culture in LA is so far above the rest of the country. RealPumpkin3199@reddit
I've had the same experience. Horrible behavior in a metro area - great experience in a smaller town.
Metro - woman next to me explaining in loud voice to 5 year old because the movie was rated R and was all about the dialogue and nuance. When I looked at her and asked her to lower her voice so I could hear the movie, her man jumped up and threatened me physically, including putting his finger 1 inch from my nose. My husband then stood up and said, please stand back from my wife in a calm voice. Then the guy pushed my husband!
Needless to say, we left the theatre and asked for a refund. The management pulled the other family out as well. We were told we could press assault charges but then they would have our home address. That's probably a bad plan so we chose not to do that.
The next year we moved to a smaller town and never looked back. People are generally friendly and have never had a bad theatre experience here. Also, the drivers are generally more courteous! Retail clerks are generally nicer. Wait staff is generally more attentive and seem generally interested.
Maybe it's pollution in the cities or bad water. Who knows?
inkswamp@reddit
Same. Got to see Mulholland Drive recently at a local indie. Theater was packed and everyone was quiet and engaged with the experience. As a David Lynch fan, it was heaven. The staff even knew to crank the volume up as per Lynchās well-known preference. I will rarely bother with mainstream cinemas anymore. Itās generally overpriced and not a great experience.

+1 on the local independent theatre. Had one instance where they stopped a sold out double feature. Someone snuck in with a discarded ticket and was acting obnoxious. Was also drunk. Was approached, they refused to leave, and became threatening. Cops dragged his arse out to everyone clapping.
Top_Jaguar_5924@reddit
Same in NYC. Independent and arthouse theaters, people are there to see the film.
stupidwhiteman42@reddit
Same! We have a historic , restored single screen theater here thats a blast to go to. It's not great for big action films but if you like Wes Anderson , it's perfect. Plus it has a stage so it does comedy, Ted talks, and other events.
Nice_Rope_5049@reddit
Our independent theaters are all gone now in my area. The only non-chain theaters are those expensive, serve you a meal while you watch types. Our local drive-in just shut down, too, although they were mostly Marvel, animated kids movies, or Mission Impossible 10 types of things. Every now and then thereād be something decent, and it was fun. And Iām in San Diego, FFS, youād think weād have options in a big city.
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit
Me too. My friends and our families go see a movie every Tuesday or Wednesday. The place is chill and people are there to actually relax and enjoy movies. The theatre has a bar and sells drinks and snacks, but they donāt care if you bring your own snacks. Many people go in sweats and bring a comfy blanket along.
TheEvilOfTwoLessers@reddit
Yeah, same. They donāt show much new/mainstream, but plenty of classics/indy/arthouse/foreign to keep me interested
sleeperninja@reddit
We have a local (seemingly) independent theater. Shows a lot of classics. I think it was the last proper movie theater we went to that didn't have lat your seat ordering and stuff like that.
I say proper because we have another theater that's more geared toward stage sets, though it often shows midnight movies and seasonal movies like Christmas Vacation--it has a relatively small screen with okay sound.
rjcarr@reddit
I just went to a 21+ theater twice in two weeks (havenāt done that in like 15 years) and it was great. If you have the choice, be more choosy about the theater you pick.Ā

Same. At ours I just saw Harvest (a new film) and Before Sunrise (the 90s movie). I was amazed (and pleased) to see tons of college kids at Before Sunrise, but everyone was very well behaved.

Wow, so it hasn't just been us. More and more I'm learning this is the new norm. We have two little kids at home, so the wife and I have only been to the movies a handful of times the last 4 years. 4 out of 5 of those times were exactly as you described. I was so stoked to see Revenge of the Sith in theaters again, but the experience was dampened by all the damn noise and inconsideration from everyone. Anyway, just wanted to share in the frustration.
Adlien_@reddit
I drove 1.5 hours to see a specific movie during the middle of the day that only played in select theaters. Nobody there but one other couple. it was worth the drive and experience to watch a movie like that.
The other movie I went to this year was a drive in movie. Movie sucked but the experience was nostalgic!
redjellydonut@reddit
I haven't been to a movie theater that wasn't an Alamo Draught House or Austin Film Society in probably 15 years. From everything I hear about the movie-going experience in a regular theater, I may never go to one ever again.

Barnitch@reddit
I had to get out of my house because our a/c broke. I took my tween to the only movie playing at the time (Sacramento with Michael Cera). We were the only people in the whole theater! thought it was entertaining enough, but my daughter was bored. She would never do this normally but she read a book with her flashlight while I watched the movie. We went again the next weekend to see the live action Lilo and Stitch, and it was the opposite. The whole theater was full. Surprisingly the only distractions were a few younger kids, which is totally to be expected at that movie. It was okay, I donāt love all these Disney remakes though. I wish I could have pulled about a book that time.
h3rs3lf_atl@reddit
I'm lucky, I'm able to go mid week/mid day. It costs less and typically there are only a handful of folks sharing the theater with me. Hubs works from home, if it's something he wants to see he takes a long lunch to join me.

LassieMcToodles@reddit
Your comment is interesting to me because I never married nor had kids (although I wanted both) and I've often wondered if those who did are living in a different world than I am... like everything continued to be wonderful for them in their own little family units.
Samwill226@reddit
I think its different for everyone, but I think the truth is every person has a 10 to 20 year period where they were the happiest. I mean I talk so so many people and it's kind universal. It's like that 10-20 years you're living your best life. Not money or love, just a time where you were at your peak socially.
For some it's not their 20's it's their 50's, for my wife it's 5-15. I say that to say I don't think the kids part matters much. Marriage and kids are wonderful but it comes with it's own stress too. You're always worried about them, so it's more chaotic and anxiety. It's never peaceful. You wouldn't trade it, but also we see people who didn't have kids and their going to the movies, out to dinner, concerts, buying a vacation condo. So it goes both ways.

pjs32000@reddit
Alamo Drafthouse. They don't allow this behavior in the theater and will kick people out for doing it.
Zen_Hydra@reddit
This. If theaters want staying power, they have to offer an experience you can't get at home. A big screen and a free case of tinnitus just won't cut it anymore.
BorisBC@reddit
I dunno what it's like in the US but in Australia we get destroyed by the cost of food at cinemas, as well as the above. $20 for a box of popcorn and a drink, for example. Maybe 50c of fucking food lol.
Zen_Hydra@reddit
Yeah. It's pretty much the same in the US.
chronic_ill_knitter@reddit
And that free case of tinnitus is getting more likely. Theaters are really loud now, especially the action movies. I'm 44, so no old people jokes.
cassssk@reddit
Took my middle-range-adolescent kids to the theater last week. Half of the group was covering ears during previews before we even sat down. I donāt get it at all, and it definitely isnāt just āold earsā being too sensitive.
chronic_ill_knitter@reddit

LazyMiddle@reddit

nectaris2089@reddit
Probably the number one reason I don't go to theaters anymore. I don't know if I've just become more sensitive to it, but growing up I regularly went to theaters. The last number of times I went I was wearing volume dampening ear plugs, and so now I just don't bother.
pdx_mom@reddit
We have an amazing theater here. They have many screens. They have couches and lounging chairs. And a full bar and good food. You sit down and they come to you to ask what you want and will bring you a drink halfway thru if you want also. It's upper scaled only because the food is expensive but the crowd is human so there's that.
MayIShowUSomething@reddit

vistaculo@reddit

8--8@reddit
I'm an immersion guy myself. The staff at the Alamo Drafthouse that I went to (in SF) would crouch when taking orders/delivering food during the show. I appreciated the effort, which made it much easier for me to tune them out. They were still visible though
PronatorTeres00@reddit
I usually go for a corner seat in the back row and don't order anything when I do Alamo. It really helps keep the immersion going, imo
pdx_mom@reddit
oh there is so much space and they are very discreet.
depechegirl@reddit
At the Alamo, you go early for the āfree showā before the previews. They are tailored to each movie and are generally hilarious. Iād say 75%ish of the distractive service is done by the time the movie starts. They only show up if you need something and at our theater you give them your card when you order and sign during the credits. Less distracting than the typical theater like in OPās experience.
DefinitelyNotADugong@reddit
We have similar here in Aus. The downside is that if you want to make an occasion of it with food and drinks, that movie is costing au$200.
johnmanyjars38@reddit

urbandk84@reddit

Tsuhume@reddit
They do though? An amc movie pass is 25-30 per month. There are at least six quality new movies that come out. More if you aren't especially picky and like to watch stuff out of the usual horror, action, comedy and scifi movies. No steaming service offers that throughput for new content. Just to keep up with new releases, you are going to need to have multiple streaming services and still need to purchase a few movies directly. You guys really do not know how good though and are just looking for a reason to complain
Black_Death_12@reddit
This is the way.
Tolwenye@reddit
I used to stand by them.
Lost time I went was the last straw. People taking and they did nothing. Put to several tickets saying so, but it took them well over 20 minutes to get the ticket and buy that time they stopped.
Food and drink took over 30 minutes to arrive and they forgot food. 20 minutes to get the ticket to fix it and then I didn't get my food until the movie was basically over.
It may have been a one off experience, but it was enough for me to not go out to movies anymore.

Yes, I recognize that people like me are probably going to be part of the reason theaters finally fail and completely shut down, but the activities posted by the OP are also to blame. No one wants to deal with that crap while they're trying to enjoy a movie - not to mention that $50 concession stand expense on top of the cost of the movie tickets. (I'm one of those that used to sneak snacks & drinks into the theater in my baby's diaper bag...or a big damn purse.)
I'll take my recliner, side table with snacks, a drink, the tv remote and my phone for the win. If I want to scroll social media or take a call during the movie, I can pause the movie, do what I want, and I'm not disturbing anyone else. I don't have to deal with someone vaping whatever. If I offend anyone during the movie, it's only going to be myself. LOL

NotEasilyConfused@reddit
I have no problem asking people to behave better. A phone call? Out in the lobby. A screen bright enough to distract other people? No. Once my kids were old enough, I started taking them to theaters and taught them better. I'm more likely to pull out my phone. It's as dim as possible, on silent, and I sit in the back row where nobody is behind me.
Someone won't adjust their bad behavior for fellow customers? The staff will do something if you ask them to.
We, as a society, don't need to put up with this behavior. People do it because nobody expects them to do better and too many people are afraid to speak up.

Understandable, but I go to an AMC and a Marcus all the time in Columbus, OH. They are wonderful. I love experiencing a good/big movie in the theater.
Kinet1ca@reddit
I rarely go either, the anxiety I get about having to deal with shitty inconsiderate people is enough to ruin the movie. People on their phones, who won't shut up, people who smell.
Had a large group bring their special needs teen once (which I get they need to be able to go see movies and have fun too) but instead of placing him in the middle of the group where they could keep him in check, they sat him at the end directly next to me and just let him do his thing. Dude wouldn't STFU the entire film and kept stomping on the ground during the exciting parts and throwing popcorn everywhere. I had to shoosh him several times and then they all look at me after like I'm the asshole.
Direct_Sheepherder61@reddit
When I went and saw the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, I had a very similar experience. A family of friends of mine, brought an adult autistic nephew I'd never met before. They sat him right next to me. I didn't fuss about his behavior during the movie, because I didn't think he was acting out on purpose. Afterwards, I told my main friend that if he chose to bring his nephew again, to please sit him as far opposite from me as possible. That movie experience was completely ruined for me.

Definitely an outlier. I go to 3-4 movies a week, and aside from a few occurrences, itās nothing like that. I used to go to the movies all the time, then stopped when my son was born for a long while. My wife would take him to movies, but I never really had time.
This past year, Iāve been making an effort to be a more present parent, so Iāve been to the theater about a dozen times lately.
Itās a fricking madhouse in the theater now. The worst 5% of experiences I ever had in a theater before 2020 are now just the average experience at a theater.
The last movie I went to had people talking loudly, unbelievably bad body odor, and trash left everywhere. Then three adults showed up to watch a kids movie with no kids around. One guy and two women. The guy was being physically affectionate with both. Not like⦠the kind of behavior that would get you arrested, but it kinda seems like these three adults were in a relationship together. Which⦠whatever, I donāt care. But can you not do this in the theater at a kidās movie? Then one of the women got mad and started yelling at the man and the other woman, then the man started screaming back at her. After shouting over the movie for a solid minute, the two of them stormed out while their other lady friend sat in the seat for a few minutes before following them. Naturally, they left all of their trash on the chairs.
Every single person I encounter at the movie theater well seems like they have some kind of profound antisocial personality disorder and shouldnāt be allowed around other people. What the hell happened to people?
evanwilliams44@reddit

Try an Alamo Drafthouse if there's one in your market. They kick people out for using phones, and I've seen it happen. Or go do an "art house" cinema that attracts people who actually care about movies. Or a nice independent place. Maybe the 24 screen mall cineplex is a lost cause, but we have no problems finding movie theaters with respectful, quiet patrons-- and with good food/beer options --so we continue to go for premiers pretty often.

I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. Even in theaters packed with kids with no adults in sight we respected where we were or Moreso we understood a movie is a privilege. Every damn time we go to the movies I am always next to someone who talks through the whole thing, not even bothering to try to whisper. Last time we went to the movies, a guy to my left had a smart watch. Instead of turning on mute, or moving the watch face to the inner part of his arm. I was constantly blinded by this guy's watch. No dark mode. Just a bright blinding LCD screen every other minute throughout the movie. My hubby keeps asking if we can go to the movies and I laugh bc I am always on the end next to some jerk who doesn't know movie etiquette. Ruins everything. I love the movies at home. Comfortable chairs, blankets, snacks, pausable for potty breaks and subtitles! We may not have the best sound system, or TV but it works for us.

Just wait a few weeks and you can watch it or own it for the same price. $40+ for 2 people to see a movie where the chairs aren't as good as mine, or $24.99 to own it and be able to pause if I have to use the bathroom? Wooden-Nerve-2340@reddit
I prefer the luxury theaters only now. Cant sit up right for an entire movie anymore. Never had these issues there either! Plus they serve food/drinks to your seat
danodan1@reddit
That why I avoid going to the movies on weekends. If I go for afternoon matinee, there will only be a few people there, maybe even none.
badger_breath@reddit
I kinda feel that theaters are next to go. First, was the arcades, malls are dead now, you want to see a movie and you sit with people who don't want to see the damn movie.
MooPig48@reddit
Ton of arcades around. At least in my area. They know we have money and are nostalgic. The beer is a nice addition to them.
banksy_h8r@reddit
Every one of those places are bars with arcade games, rather than arcades with beer. As a non-drinker who loves arcade games I hate going to them.
diurnal_emissions@reddit
Alright, nerd.
MooPig48@reddit
Oh not for me! The games are absolutely the focus. They pride themselves on their pinball collections and obscure (and popular also) games. They have multiples of several.
One has a giant space invaders game. Like a 100ā screen. It has 2 seats, and while itās absolutely traditional old school space invaders, the seats shake and vibrate and itās super immersive and fun.
banksy_h8r@reddit
That sounds awesome.
badger_breath@reddit
Our town has a pinball arcade room with some arcades but it's mostly a bar and a monthly membership. People tried to revamp an arcade room but the asshat gangster twits took over and closed them down. Us gen x, getting close to retirement. I'm shocked no one has bought a mall and started to convert it to a nastolgic place for us...
MooPig48@reddit
Someone will. Most of us are still 10 years out or so from retirement. Some wealthy Gen Xer is going to do us right
But like I said, thatās not the case at all where I live. Games are the focus. Beer is just a nice side bonus
Tangboy50000@reddit
Itās cheaper for studios to go the streaming route for distribution, so theaters probably will eventually go away.
SteevoHatezGoogle@reddit
I never go to a theater. But I went to see the Led Zeppelin movie. Probably I was the worst behaved, as my involuntary "Holy Fuck" shout at the end of Dazed and Confused was the only thing anyone said through the whole thing.

I have become self contained. My home theater set up is amazing compared to the Trinitron I grew up with. My stereo is the same and I have so many records. I never have to leave the house for entertainment. I donāt like humans in inside spaces anymore.
LastNightOsiris@reddit
If more movie theaters were like that I would probably go more often. My experience is the opposite. Everyone sits there quietly watching the movie, and I feel like I could have just watched this at home. The whole point of watching a movie in a theater is to participate in a shared experience. I want to hear people yelling at the characters and making dumb jokes, smell the weed and piss, see cops chasing suspects down the aisle and out the emergency exit. The kind of things I canāt get at home.
TheRealRaceMiller@reddit
What ghetto do you live in?
Big-Meeting-6224@reddit
Yup. Not to sound elitist, but there's less of this at higher-end, pricier theaters, if you have one in your area. At typical big chain theaters, the phone use and general lack of conscientious is pretty bad.

11am showings are a godsend. I had 8 people on my entire theatre for Fantastic Four.
BlackCatWoman6@reddit
And owners wonder why people would rather watch a movie at home.
M_Yusufzai@reddit
Agree. I went to the theater last week by myself, hoping to focus on the movie. NOPE. Couple next to me had snuck in dinner. Sub wrappers crinkling, even during the quiet scenes. The man in the couple felt compelled to clean up extensively, making sure he crumpled his wrapper into a ball. Group of dudes wanted to comment, not exclamations, like loudly state their opinion of the scene.
I don't know how theaters will survive. Who wants such an experience?
MiserableAtHome@reddit

I went to a theater about 2 weeks ago. One guy git up and sat back down at least 7 times during the movie. He went to the lobby to buy a ton of crap and, I assume, went to the bathroom multiple times. I doubt that he watched more than 30% of the movie.

Theaters are the worst place to see movies
BLAlley63@reddit
I haven't been to the theater since early 2020 and will never so do again. Even before covid it had become a miserable experience, overpaying for tickets and inedible snacks to watch 49 minutes of ads and trailers, then a movie with poor sound, all while enduring a bunch of douchecanoes doing everything except watching the movie.
Training-Purple-5220@reddit

Frequent_Chip318@reddit
I went to see a Kurosawa film the other day, it was in an arthouse theater where they are showing a bunch of his films that have been remastered. There are very quiet parts and the tension he created in some scenes made me wish i hadn't hungrily bought popcorn. You could hear a pin drop! I think I have now mastered the art of silent popcorn eating from this experienceĀ
AtleastIthinkIsee@reddit
I haven't been since... 2019.
They really need to change something up big or else I don't know what the future of theater is going to be. It'll be something but unless things change it won't be something I want to be apart of.
I used to work in a movie theater I loved movies so much and now I don't know that if you gave me free tickets now I'd want to go.
Hoffafiles@reddit

This is why I have a home theater too. I avoid this completely or go to movies when they have been out for a couple of weeks. Then I can go midday and itās empty. People are inconsiderate assholes. 2nd round of it being a movie, as a King fan I want to check it out and see how it compares to the first one with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

That one was The Running Man. This one is the Long Walk. It will be hard to do it justice, so much of that book was internal dialogue. I hope itās good. I loved that story.
Acceptable_Stop2361@reddit

I did not know that it had been made into a movie. I love that story. I read a lot of Stephen King books. I had the Bachman Books which was a collection with The Long Walk, Rage, Roadwork, and The Running Man. I must have read it a dozen times.
It's really interesting that The Running Man had a plane fly into a skyscraper and Rage had a school shooting years before they actually happened. King asked that Rage be removed from print due to the increase of school shootings.
BrotherQuartus@reddit

I saw it a couple of days ago. First movie I've seen in a corporate theater since the last Star Wars, IIRC.
On the plus side, there were only a handful of other people there (it was a matinee) We were all mostly fellow Gen-Xers or older and knew how to act in a movie theater.
On the minus side, there were only a handful of people there. A comedy like that benefits from a crowd. I'm not sure where the sweet spot is between "enough people to get a good room of laughter going" and "not so many people that there's going to be at least one or two jerks there."

The parents just chilled on their phones. The whole movie.
Not a masterpiece by any means, but I wouldn't have enjoyee anything in that setting.

I go to the movies weekly, and where we are, it's mostly quiet. Still annoying people will come as a group and chat from start to finish, and all the phone screens ahead of me always catch my eye.
Gonna bring him again this week as it's an inconvenience to drop him off, and no one else is considerate either.

I go to the movies weekly (I have the AMC A-List membership, which is totally worth it if you like going to the movies), however I never go on the weekends. Always a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, and for big releases, I wait a week before going. Never have any issues.
Is it sad that we have to modify our behavior due to the inconsideration of others? Absolutely, but the problem isnāt going away (and will most likely get worse). Shifting the days I go to the movies from the weekends to the weekdays means I still get to enjoy the movies without any of the jerks ruining the experience.
WestCryptography@reddit
That is insane. I have never had an actual issue at a movie theater. Weirdest thing Iāve ever encountered was going with my wife to a movie, last two tickets were in the very front and the seats didnāt recline, so we waited about 20 minutes into the movie and moved to a couple of unoccupied seats, another 20 minutes goes by, so we are well into the movie and some guy finally walks in and literally sits on my lap before I could react. I figured he saw me or something when he slowed in front of my seat but he just plopped right down and I had to apologize and move back to the front with my wife. I guess it makes sense, it was a dark part of the movie and it would be easier to see the light for the seat number, but still. You already missed 40 minutes of this movie, my dudeā¦
bibbyshibby@reddit
It's a terrible experience. I refuse to go anymore. Theatres need to have a time slot for adults only, with a no cellphone policy and an usher to Shush anyone talking. I'd pay extra for that.

My wife and I watch one movie in the theater a year, on Halloween. We time it so we can catch dinner first, see the movie, and maybe dessert or straight home. Unfortunately, we live on a dead end street that doesn't get trick 'r treat'rs. We gave up years ago.
It's been a nice tradition. Sometimes we watch a horror movie. A couple years ago The Nightmare Before Christmas was playing. The theater was completely empty. Totally different from when we saw it the first time at college. There have only ever been 2-5 other people any other time. I don't think I'll see a new release in the theater ever again.

bottomoftheroof@reddit
I've had the opposite experience. I've gone twice this summer and it's been empty. At the most, it was 4 other people and they were better behaved than my family. It's very expensive so I can see why nobody wants to go. My local theater has added reclining heated seats but that doesn't make it worth the $8 sodas and $20 tickets. My local theater has also started eliminating employees. Instead of ordering food from a person, you have to order it from one of the ticket machines and then one person behind the counter slings out the food. And there's now so many ads before you get to the previews. The whole experience is annoying.

taintsauce@reddit
We really didn't go to the movies for a long while - between the cost, people being dicks, and the AMC in our old town just generally kind of sucking it wasn't worth it. That said, we moved and our new town has a smaller (like 5 or 6 screen, I think?) theater run by a regional chain that just rocks. Haven't had any issues with dickheads in the audience, and tickets are (unbelievably) $5.
We saw the new Jurassic World a couple weeks ago and with a large popcorn and a couple drinks, we were asses-in-seats for like $20.
Being a smaller theater, the variety isn't as good as a large multiplex, but they're getting first-run for big-name movies so...eh?

PuzzleheadedWeird402@reddit
Sounds like you had a bad experience. Occasionally, I go to the movies. The theater I go to is nothing like it used to be. It has reclining seats, cup holders and plenty of room between the rows for people to get by so you donāt have to stand up.
strummer00@reddit
I suppose a lot depends on where and when you are going in addition to what you are going to see.
We've been to many over the past couple of years and haven't had that experience.
But we tend to go in "off" hours (weekdays, or early weekends).Ā The closest we have had to this is when we saw Friendship on a Friday night in a pretty crowded theater - there was group of young guys talking a bit early in the movie and a couple "be quiets" from others, but it settled down fairly quickly.
Also, we often go to a local art theater.Ā Always pretty subdued and attentive crowd there.Ā Of course I was kind of taken aback when we went to see Stop Making Sense and people were cheering and clapping between songs, as if the band was there live on the stage.Ā But I adjusted and just pretended we were at a concert instead of a film.
Legionnaire11@reddit
Yeah I read these takes on Reddit every week, but actually since the pandemic I've been going to theaters way more (5-6 times/yr) because my kids are that age where it's a lot of fun. I hadn't been very much in the 20 years before that and I dreaded what it might be like. But so far we've had no signs of any bad behavior that reddit is telling me is rampant.

I like going to my cinemark the week after a movie has come out, during a weekday so there are no kids and it is matinee prices. I sometimes get a theater all to myself or with just a couple of other people. I took my niece and nephew to see Superman and there were only 12 people in the room. Stadium seats and recliners that heat up, food and drink brought to our seats. That is the experience I love.

When I went to see Killers of the Flower Moon, a 5 year old in the back row threw their used gum and it landed in my hand as I was about to put popcorn in my mouth, causing me to almost put it in my mouth.
Reachforthesky777@reddit
I gave up on theaters years ago. The last film I saw in a theater was that Star wars Skywalker movie. I realized sitting there that everything about the experience was pretty bad: the high prices, the bad writing in the film, the sticky floors, the faint smell of ammonia, people talking through the film, phones writing and chiming, the dried stain of what I have to assume was a large drink that someone in the past had hurled at the screen and which nobody cared enough to do anything about.
I couldn't figure out why I was subjecting myself to it.
I used to see everything playing when I was a kid. The theaters near us were clean, people behaved, the people cleaning the theater cared or at least acted like they cared about the facility. It didn't smell, the seat cushions didn't feel dirty, and the sound quality was better.
Lower_Group_1171@reddit

I can enjoy a reactive audience and that's part of the fun of going to the movies. But these post-pandemic crowds aren't reactive they're just passive, unengaged, and distracting. I don't know why they're there in the first place. Movie tickets aren't cheap anymore.

Man that sucks Iām sorry that happened. The last theater I went to employees walked out and announced that if you were loud, on your phone, or were making a disruption to the other movie goers then you would be escorted out and banned from the theater you were given no second chance. One of the most amazing places I've been to is Alamo Drafthouse. Not only will they bring great food to your seat, so you can watch a movie with beer or wine and fairly good food--but they have the "this is a no talking zone" rule where they will eject you for talking during the movie. And apparently if you're a repeat offender they will ban you.
And they tell other members of the audience to press the 'order' button to let them know someone needs to be ejected for disrupting the movie.

The last couple of times I went to a movie theatre was during a normal workday (it was right after a layoff). I was the only, or one of the only people in the theatre. I've got a great 360 video before the lights went off of all the empty chairs around me, LOL. The most interesting thing - and this was at the same chain of theater, but in two different locations - I walked right in. No checks, no one cared. I don't know if they were watching me and knew only a handful of people belonged in the theater and it checked out that I was in there, but I couldn't believe that I walked in, bought popcorn and a soda, walked to the theater, and sat down. Absolutely no human interaction other than buying my food.
I do agree with the OP though - I do not go to the theater unless there is a movie I really, really want to see. For one, way, way too expensive. It is now at least $15 for a ticket plus $20 for food. That is entirely too much. Secondly, most movies are almost immediately accessible at home. Just want upwards of 2 months and you'll be able to see it in the comfort of your own home.

American living in France. Iāve seen 104 movies (I track and rate them)Ā in the past 14 months in Parisian theaters, and have never seen anything like this one time. No talking, no phones, not even loud snacks, not one time.Ā

I've mostly gone to theaters in Portland and Eugene, Oregon. Not much has changed since years of yore in my opinion other than that you can reserve seats, and that the previews are much longer. The funny thing is that you can conduct a five second google search and see the average preview time for a theater or even a certain theater showing a specific movie.
Because (most) people reserve seats, there's really no point showing up to a movie until 15 or 20 minutes after the listed start time. It's almost better than it was before. Concession prices have gone up, but so has inflation. It seems like a wash there to me. If you have kids and they want candy, then stop at a Walgreens or CVS on the way.
Now, I'm not sure what movies OP likes to go to, but I have not had a problem with loud people or people on phones. That said, I prefer dramas or thrillers, and I do not go to Marvel/Superhero movies, or modern (safe space) comedies that younger people like.

My husband and I saw a movie during Christmas time, and a lady was wearing loud jingle bells on her shoes. She took at least 3 bathroom breaks, jingling loudly along the way. And this was one of the places that has a food menu and service in theater, so you better believe she used her cellphone flashlight the entire movie.
darklordjames@reddit
Yeah, I don't do movie theaters anymore.
The last thing I went to was the Taylor Swift concert film, which was a great, noisy time where the audience was expected to dance, sing, and be disruptive. Before that was Fast and Furious 9, where I rented out the entire theater for my friends during COVID.
I don't think I've been to a regular movie since like 2018. It was already a horrible experience by them, and I can't imagine how abysmal it is today.
Oh! Wait! The exception: Find your local, single-screen independent theater. A) The people going there will care about what they are watching, and B) the employees will take anyone misbehaving, drag them outside, and beat them like the dog they are.

I see most of my films at my city's independent cinema. People there love films. I've never had any kind of issues with people talking or messing with their phones or anything.
For "big" (non-indie) films, I usually go to a daytime matinee. It used to only cost $5. It's more like $12 now, but the most crowded it's ever been was maybe 12 people. And I only encountered "talkers" once, and was able to get up and move a couple rows over. Of course, they stopped talking once I moved, but since there were only a few people there it wasn't a big deal.
I also wish we'd just be like everyone else in the English-speaking world and call it a "cinema" instead of "movie theater". It's such a clunky word, much like how we're supposed to say "female actor" or "female comedian" instead of "actress" or "comedienne" these days.

The last film I saw in theater was Parasite in 2019. I specifically chose a weekday matinee in a wealthy suburb, thinking thereād be fewer people and maybe theyād have some common courtesy. Wrong! Two well dressed 70ish ladies came in and sat right behind me and talked, ate loud snacks, let there phone ring without silencing it, and ignored me when I asked them to be quiet. I walked out and was given a refund for the tickets. Never again!

A couple of our local theatres have bedbugs, so there's that too. One of the extra-cost theatres with VIP seating is so run down the "leather" seats barely have any "leather" left on the seat bottoms, seat backs, and arm rests. Also somebody threw a drink at one the screens and the stain was never removed. There was one theatre hall with a blown speaker that rattled incessantly. Never again.

If you absolutely canāt wait for something to hit streaming, the trick is to go to the earliest possible showing on Sunday. The ticket is generally a few bucks cheaper, and there are dramatically fewer inconsiderate assholes to contend with.

I go to movies every once in a while and thankfully havenāt had any issues except for maybe one time. Some teenager or maybe early 20 kids were talking and stuff non stop and everyone was glaring at them. Iām someone who has no problem saying something or politely confronting someone when no one else is so I loudly whispered asking them to shut up or leave. They were quiet for a bit and then started talking again so I went out and got theatre staff and they kicked them out. The theatre applauded as the staff walked them out lolol.

I live in Japan and it clearly states on the big screen before every movie that if you're talking, making too much noise, or on your phone during the movie you'll be kicked out.
Back in Canada it was always a gamble of if someone was going to f up the experience and waste my money. The experience is so much better, but I'm now worried my snack grabbing is annoying other people (not getting kicked out, but I genuinely don't want to be the one asshole in the whole theatre of super respectful audience. I see this complaint a lot, but haven't really had this experience personally. People here seem to only go to the movie if they're really really invested in actually seeing the movie (probably cuz it's pretty expensive).
Unfortunately, there's hardly anyone actually in the theatres anymore. Like if there's 20 people that'd be a busy theatre.
Last time I remember going to a packed theatre with a noisy crowd was WAYYY back in 2002 when I went to opening night of Spider-Man. There was a girl in my row who actually answered a phone call during the movie.

There was also a phone going off for most of the movie (it was on vibrate, but I could still hear it). It happened so much that I gaslit myself into thinking it was part of the soundtrack. It was also an AMC. I would have gone to another theater, but the timing was the best for me. Also, the commercials that were not trailers were out of control. We have a pretty good string of art house cinemas in Philly (the Ritz chain) where you can see first run international and domestic films (usually Sundance and Cannes award winners). They serve herbal tea, artisanal sodas and chocolates, and a full line of kombucha. Sometimes there's a local film lovers group to discuss the piece afterward. Expensive but worth it.
Compare that to the regular theaters where people bring in McDonalds, yell at their side pieces, watch TokTok, act out beefs and generally bring their shitty home lives out with them.

I was already annoyed by smartphones in cinemas before COVID and I mean just light of the screens.
But maybe there's going to be a reaction. I can imagine screenings where phones are banned just like on some shows, you need to put it in special pouch. Also obviously no loud talking allowed. This would create two kinds of crowds, one just like OP described and the other strict about no distractions.
I can imagine that screenings with phones would look more like watching a game in a bar than cinema and if that would work for people, then I'm fine with that if I could choose my peaceful option. This could bring back people to cinemas.

I support (have a membership at) one of around a dozen really great independent theaters where I live. It's 100 years old this year. They play the craziest mix of movies from first run to the 1940s. Sci-fi weeks, all night horror events, stuff like that. Lots of 70 mm and 35 mm versions. Many are free admission and always free popcorn for members. It's $9 admission for the ones that aren't free.
There are no commercials except for local businesses (just fliers up on the screen before showtime), and the crowd is composed of movie fanatics with a lot of love for the big screen. The enthusiasm is palpable. I really enjoy being there.
I haven't been to a corporate chain theater since at least 2017, though.

There are a number of factors that play into this but the largest is peopleās sense of entitlement and lack of respect for others. On some level I get it movies are expensive these days and people think that equates to them being able to treat it like their personal space. I used to live in a 3 bedroom house that had a 3 car garage. We turned the 3 car garage into a media/entertainment room. 128 inch 16:9 screen, 1080p projector, 7.2 high-end sound system.
Now, I live in an apartment and I have neighbors below me and to one side. This building was made in the 1930's. The walls are paper thin. I hear every argument word for word from the neighbors.
Suffice to say that I don't get to enjoy any "home theater" at this apartment.
I miss the old days when I could blast things at an incredibly high volume, with rumbling subwoofers, etc...
Even then, I might have been bothering a few neighbors, but not like I would if I was trying to watch a movie with decent volume in my apartment.
I'm probably going to be a forever renter, so I don't see any solution to this in my future.
I suppose my only hope is that one day I can afford one of those little cottage apartments that have their own 4 walls that don't share walls with anybody else. Right now, those type apartments cost about $500 more per month than I'm currently paying

If you havenāt been to a theater in awhile, most now have assigned seating. I donāt know why it seemed to be mostly incident free when it first started, but now is a constant problem. Natas-LaVey@reddit
The theater is so much better now, you buy your ticket and pick your seat so you donāt have to run to try and get a decent seat, the seats are recliners and the speakers are in the seat so you can hear the movie, you order food and drinks through the app and they bring them to your seat, and best of off you order alcohol and they bring it to your seat! Want another beer, order it and they will magically bring it to your seat! My 5 year old will never know the pain of running to get a decent seat then putting sweatshirts on seats to try and hold them for your friends. Having to secure seats and then sending one person to get all the food so you can have someone watch the seats, the crappy upright sitting position, having to miss a part of the movie if you wanted another soda or candy. The theater is now actually enjoyable.

For the price of tickets why would you go to a movie and ignore it? What is the point? I also wonder if people being annoying are also annoyed by other people. Does the woman blinding everyone with her phone get annoyed by the people talking?

I have no problem calling people out in a theater. I usually say something along the lines of, āI paid my money like you did. But the price of admission doesnāt include your narration!ā I got thanked by half a theater once LOL!

nottodayautoimmune@reddit
Our last several theater visits were ruined by a gaggle of girls talking loudly and giggling throughout an entire show, people dressed in cosplay goofing around with their toy lightsabers during a Star Wars throwback movie, and people who brought a toddler to a movie that was definitely not intended for young audiences, so the toddler threw a tantrum for the greater part of two hours.
Stuff like this is why my husband and I finally invested in a big TV and a new soundbar with subwoofer. We can watch whatever we want in the comfort of our own home with no distractions.
wetlookcrazy@reddit
Had similar incidents recently. Dude next to me wouldnāt shut the fuck up. Literally, and I am not exaggerating, made a comment about everything that he was seeing in the movie. I finally told him to shut the fuck up and he looked at me like I had 3 heads. Another time a guy fell asleep next to me and snored loudly and he wife didnāt give two fucks. I moved seats but I could still hear his ass 8 rows behind me throughout the movie. I feel the moviegoing experience is dying on the vine. Step up vendors or your cash cow dies soon

Downvoted at first but then I realized your experience was true to you. Iāve only seen a movie in theatres 3 or 4 times since Covid and EVERYTIME it was a great experience. Dune 2, Oppenheimer, and Minecraft 3D w my kid were all great experiences that couldnāt be replicated at home. Thereās some jerk who bought a big chunk of my cityās entertainment district and wonāt put in a movie theatre because āpeople can experience movies at home in their own theaterā seems like such a classist thing to think. Long Live the Theatre!!!
Zaltara_the_Red@reddit

TheRealEkimsnomlas@reddit
My 23 yo son went to a movie for the first time since the pandemic recently. He's an avid follower of certain franchises and the kind of guy who will explore them further via video games. He and a friend spent a LOT of money. But the thing that killed it for him was the thirty minutes of regular ass commercials, not even counting the previews. Considering TV and computer technology, if theaters don't get back to giving people value for their money, giving more than a screen and speakers- but a good time, a reason to go out and do something special- the multiplexes are fucked.
The small art cinema in our city, in contrast, is doing great. They know their clientele. They cater to film lovers. They have discussions with the audience and host an annual festival. Perhaps they are an example of a model that is long tail-proof.
bmyst70@reddit
It sounds like the difference here is that theater isn't trying to cater to the "General Public" (who seem to be inconsiderate assholes), but a very specific clientele. And they make their movie going a full experience.
TheNewGuyFromBahsten@reddit
And they've taken the bass out of everything. At least at AMC here in Colorado, action movies feel flat

Not to mention itās digital projection. Celluloid has NO substitute.
doa70@reddit
I go to a nicer, out of the way theater. It's otherwise a typical multiscreen, updated with reclining stadium seating and very good sound. It's uncommon for a theater to be packed for anything I'm seeing, sometimes I'm alone. None of the bs you're describing. No phones out, talking, etc. I do find it funny how many people come in pajamas and bring blankets now! I think the recliners and that they keep it cool means pj's and blankets are a comfy way to watch!
jojowhitesox@reddit
What time did you go? I notice that the Rid Raf tend to go to later shows. If ya stick to like a 4 or 5pm show the distractions tend to be less

I think I've seen maybe 3 movies in the theater since COVID. Thankfully I didn't have a problem with inconsiderate people, but the cost is just ridiculous. I much prefer to stream at home.
Tardislass@reddit
Haven't been to a theater unless it's a indie or foreign film that I can't see on streaming. Last film in a multiplex AMC theater had the talking Gen Zs. A older woman who decided to text on a white screen for the entire movie. I don't miss seeing movies as people treat the theatre like their living room.
Smurfybabe@reddit
I wonder if it's a regional thing or we just get lucky? We have Regal unlimited so we go to the movies often and haven't experienced any problems.
MathNo6329@reddit
I really hate that at our regular theater now you have to sit through 10 minutes of commercials and then the previews. However you have no idea when the movie is really going to start when in the past you could figure that you would have 10 minutes of cushion for the previews if youāre trying to have dinner first. Now we rush through dinner to get to the theater and end up stuck wasting 30 minutes before the movie starts.
If Congress actually wants to do something useful they should pass a law that forces theaters to say what time the movies are actually going to start.

We went and took our 5yo to a local theatre on a Thursday early evening showing (the new Lilo & Stitch) and it was fun. There were other little kids there but nothing really aggravating.
High off of that win, we took her to go see Elio while on vacation. Same thing. Had a great time, everyone behaved nicely and no disturbances.
Iām not going to go to a grown up movie though, Iād rather stay in and watch it on the home theatre after Smol Valkyrie goes to bed. We have better snacks here and I think Iām getting to the point where Iām kinda over everyoneās behavior in public. Why are grown ups so impolite lately?

Arthritis, wrecked back & people on their phones kept me from movies for years. Now I live 5 mins from a theater chain & go on Tues when I get āfrequent flyerā $8 seats for the big recliners in an x-plus (or whatever each chain calls it) theater. Sometimes I get popcorn, otherwise I walk right in with my water bottle & my own snacks. Certain sections of seats give you major privacy. I am comfy, minimal pain & feel separated from other patrons. I wonāt see a movie any other way.
Ashkendor@reddit

I havenāt been to a theater but one time since before COVID and I plan on never going back. I have hearing loss and the surround sound audio makes it so I canāt hear the dialogue. The moment I see the light of a device, I want to throw a full soda bottle at that personās head. So at my age, a proud 56, why would I want to spend that much money to watch something in those surroundings when I can watch it in the comfort of my own home where I can pause to use the bathroom whenever I want, the audio is good, and I use subtitles to make my life easier. When someone says, āOh, but you have to see it in the theater.ā The fuck I do! Hard pass.

AnnieB512@reddit
I don't ever encounter that and I go to movies quite regularly. I find assigned seating amazing, no more showing up and all the good seats are gone, most people have their phones on until the previews start but then they turn them off, and I feel like the theaters are so much cleaner these days.
In the last few years I have only one memory of someone being loud and the people behind them immediately shushed them.

RonnieJamesTivo@reddit
I really still enjoy the experience of seeing a film in the theater. I mostly stick to our local arthouse and independent theaters though where people behave. I have Movie Pass, $20 a month, and a membership to the non-profit theater, which makes it more affordable than the regular ticket prices. The last time I went to a Regal theater, the people next to me brought their very small baby to a horror movie and then proceeded to allow the baby to crawl into my lap. Good times.

We go to a really good one in the Domain in Austin. You dont get crap like this in these kinds of theaters. Tickets are a little higher. They have a pretty good bar and gourmet chef you have your own space, the seats arent set up like a row. It's a full experience. Just find an upper scale theater.
