Commonwealth CA-15 'Kangaroo'

Originally designed for a P&W Double Wasp, their unavailability led to the Griffon-engined CA-15 which looked remarkably like the subsequent licence-built CA-17 Mustang. It first flew in december 1946 and attained 448mph on a test flight but was scrapped in 1950 as jet aircraft became available.

I like it, but i cant help but think "honey i shrunk the cockpit". It just looks so small in proportion to the rest of the plane lol.

Thats because it was huge.
It maye resemble a Mustang, but it was significantly bigger.

If the P-51 is a Mustang, this is a Clydesdale.

A Suffolk Punch.

I thought that was a lawnmower for years

Seems to have been remarkably similar. Smaller wingspan that the Mustang but larger wing area and taller. Very similar max takeoff weight, etc.
The P51H looks even more similar than the P51D to the CA15

Stangaroo was staring me in face….

Just dispelling one myth. The CA-15 was never called the, "Kangaroo".
Responsible_Bee3680@reddit
Im really trying to picture it with a raidal....
iamalsobrad@reddit
From some angles it looked like a swole Sea Fury or Fw-190 with roid-rage issues. From other angles it looked like a derpy cut-and-shut P-47.

Easy enough... When you look at the Griffin's manifold. On a spitfire it takes up a fair bit of the nose..
On this there's space all around it compared to the spit. The airframe here makes it look small by comparison.

Me, too. I don't have a drawing, alas.

We used to build some pretty cool planes in Australia.

Heck yah! That one looks like a screamer! 😎👍

And tanks - the final Sentinel version would've been quite something.

This was an absolute beast. I read a book about it's development. Even though the CA-17 ( which was a licences P-51d/h) has a later designation, the CA-15 was designed as a P-51 on steroids/EPO/& every other performance enhancer you can think of.
Yeah unfortunately the Vampire & Meteor did sorta kill this off. But it would have been one heck of a fighter

The Martin Baker MB-5 was another plane that sadly never made it into production.
Smooth_Imagination@reddit
Did it have the merideth effect intake at the bottom?
Dry_Complaint_3569@reddit
No examples remain?
Atholthedestroyer@reddit
It's like a P-51 with a thyroid problem...
HonkyDonk86@reddit
Can we get P-51 mom?!?! We have P-51 at home!
P-51 at home ☝🏻
NassauTropicBird@reddit
Looks like a P-51 with an extra chromosome or two

There is a CAC C-18 Mustang in a hangar near Masterson, Texas.
My brother was looking at another aircraft there and it was in same building. In dec condition but was never USA licensed.
