Rocky Horror midnight!

My local mall's movie theater had Saturday midnight showings when I was in HS in the late 80s. I snuck out at night on my bicycle to watch - they were really fun to be a part of!

I was raised on RHPS! My parents took me every Friday and Saturday night from the ages of 2-5. It was a big theatre with I think only one screen. I remain a night owl to this day!

I must be an outcast of my own generation. I've never understood the appeal of this movie. I've watched it twice and guess I just don't get it.
I'm more of an Animal House or Being There movie guy.

I got adopted by a friend group in college. I was kinda a nerdy loner, and for whatever reason, they decided to take me under their wing and help me to loosen up.
Every Halloween, the local big city has a theater trope that puts on a big todo for a midnight showing. It's one of the oldest theaters in the city. I get dragged in there with no idea what I'm getting into.
When they give the call for any virgins in the crowd, my wall flower ass wants to stay firmly in my seat. My friends are incredibly insistent that I stand up. And, for whatever reason, they convinced me. So, I was properly indoctrinated that night.
I lost contact with that group, but I am still deeply thankful for them.

It’s like they stole your story for the script of “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”…but at least they didn’t immediately make you shadow cast Rocky!

I shall admit I was deeply confused and slightly concerned by all the costumes as they all started gathering in line to get inside. My ignorant cis self had a lot of cultural baggage that needed to be deprogrammed. I think they were well aware that fishnets would have been several bridges too far for me at the time.
I didn't have any deep-seated trauma I needed to get over, just a bit more aspergers than most. But it was all rather wholesome, and I'm sure a good screen writer could have added enough drama to make it marketable. Everyone there was just so welcoming and inclusive.
Thank you, Valerie, you were exactly what I needed!

I had a very similar experience! I wonder how many people can credit RHPS as one of the experiences that helped them realize that there was a much wider world of expression out there, and even if not all of it was your thing personally, there’s still goodness and much fun to be had if you just accept people as they are, and appreciate the variety that they bring to the party. I also appreciated the built-in homages much later after I became familiar with the old RKO and sci fi movies that inspired it.

That would be awkward and uncomfortable for anyone.

It was. But that... was just me. High school was pretty miserable. Only had a couple of friends, and the library was our only sanctuary. We had no real social skills, and our introverted selves would rather be nose deep in books or video games than talking to people.
Which is fine by itself. But being scared to talk or interact with strangers can be very limiting. Thanks to that group, I learned enough self-confidence to get out of my shell and stop taking myself so seriously. After that, fun didn't just have to mean books or video games. It led to my first girlfriend and honestly a much better education than I got from school.

This movie is one of my wife's all time favorite and until Oct 2023 I had never seen it. I bought us some tickets to a stage performance at The Classic Center Theater in Athens GA and saw it for the first time. Excellent show. 10/10 highly recommend.

Multiple Saturday nights at the Berkeley theater. Never stayed for the toxic avenger afterward.
Now that I’m old, an 8pm showing would be more my speed 😜

I was fortunate enough to be a part of Rocky from early high school to the start of my college years. Definitely a time in my life I still remember fondly. There are days I test myself to see how many lines I remember from the movie. I still sing the songs in the shower every so often.

Best time ever was when the kid playing Rocky came strutting out in a gold lamé thong. We all laughed and clapped and cheered but knew it wouldn’t fly in Texas.
Sure enough, the Arlington police came in about 15 minutes later, arrested that kid, and shut the whole thing down.
It was epic, and we all pitched in money for bail, haha.

There was a local movie theater that showed RHPS every Friday at midnight and I went every single week… until I got hit by a drunk driver while crossing the street on my way to the theater. Fortunately, I only broke my clavicle and my nose and chipped one tooth.

And I had a TON of road rash down my entire face. But it totaled the asshole’s truck. His engine block caved in completely upon impact with little old 5’3 me.

I appreciate the movie as far as it being kind of a shared cultural "thing" for so many, but I've never seen more than 5 minutes of it. I never got the appeal of having crap thrown at me in a movie.

Some Gen Alphas have resurrected Rocky with a shadow cast at a local coffee shop. They did a good show, very gay. I took my daughter and even after three kids and being Pan/Poly she still had a Rocky Awakening.
