What makes you think this would rule the EU? It would be the biggest country in the EU by size but with all relevant numbers (GDP, military budget, inhabitants) it would still be behind Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Netherlands.

ServesYouRice@reddit
Too much Russian influence then
Mao_TheDong@reddit
As opposed to… zero russian influence in yugoslavia?
ServesYouRice@reddit
Yugoslavia actually fought Soviet influence which is why Romania and others were hit by communism much harder than ex Yugo countries
Mao_TheDong@reddit
I’ll take that, it just feels weird to me that not all communist countries had russian influence.
We still know more of your language tho, so.. honorary balkan?
Mao_TheDong@reddit
Not including Moldova kinda sucks since we know russian and romanian which is exactly how serbo-croatian sounds to us
Spurious02@reddit
I swear those maps keep making Balkans bigger and bigger. Next time Austria and Slovakia will join too. Balkans is everything under the danube, sava and kupa rivers. You can add Romania cause culturally it makes sense, but that's it.
dude123nice@reddit
Source for this.
The fact that Romania clearly makes sense, but also doesn't fit the definition, is precisely the issue with said definition.
Spurious02@reddit
Wikipedia's article claims so and it cites Barbara Jelavich's book "History of the Balkans: eighteenth and nineteenth centuries"
dude123nice@reddit
And like this, you've just lost all credibility.
Spurious02@reddit
You could just tell me your response without quoting what you were particularly responding to like a nerd. I am sorry, do you have a better source than a history book published by Cambridge University Press written by a historian? The only people that are anti-wikipedia are teachers that want their students to do deeper researches on the topics or people lying.
dude123nice@reddit
It's pure ignorance to call me a nerd when I'm just ensuring I communicate clearly, in a manner that ensures there are no misconceptions. Communicating clearly is a sign you are taking the convo seriously and respecting the other person's time.
That is not what you quoted. You quoted Wikipedia.
As well as anybody who wants to avoid the very real possibility of fake quotes being used.
Spurious02@reddit
Are you ragebating or what? Wikipedia cites that source so I cited it that too cause I saw it from there. Do you have a better source than Barbara Jelavich's history book "history of the Balkans"? Your next comment shall be "yes, it's X" or "no".
dude123nice@reddit
I've seen lots of cases where a wiki claims to cite a source but when you look.ip.said source it doesn't actually have anything to do with the line that claims to be citing it. If this is ragebait for you, you have some issues dude
Who is she? What makes her such a trusted source anyhow?
crnee@reddit
Be polite, and introduce yourself. Who are you that makes you credible.
What makes you a reliable source to discredit these sources. And did you check those references on Wikipedia?
Wikipedia was quite unreliable source in the begining. 23yrs ago. Now is at 80% accuracy but thst is still a good research starting point.
So what do you have to offer on this topic?
dude123nice@reddit
Beyond being someone who actually lives in the Balkans, I've got nothing. But I'm not the one with the hot take here, he is. So the onus of providing credible proof is on him. That's how making a claim works, it is not assumed that you are correct without proof that contradicts you. You're the one who has to provide proof.
crnee@reddit
So you just have an opinion. Internet is full of people like you that have “an opinion”.
Healthy discussion is when both sides provide reasons for their opinions. Yours is that you live in the Balkans.
I checked Wikipedia article for you. In references there are many reputable authors from balkans, and Barbara Jelavich has 3 sources listed, all about Balkans region, 2 of them published by Cambridge University Press that is among 10 leading academic publishers in the world (4th by Granada scale)
You made a claim that /u/Spurious02 comment is wrong, so onus is on you to explain yourself ;) He did. He gave you his source.
Nobody owns you anything. You tried to discredit him, and nobody asked you to.
dude123nice@reddit
As is real life, for that matter.
If you're just parroting what other ppl say, you don't actually have an opinion, you're just someone else's mouthpiece. When you don't even know that person that's just pathetic. And even when it comes to just voicing what other ppl have said, using Wikipedia as a source is similarly pathetic.
Lemme alter a wiki article and then give it as a source as well.
But apparently someone owes you a proper English education
He did that himself when he used Wikipedia.
ImOnMushrooms4real@reddit
do you know what is pathetic? being a little dipshit, that cant seem to get the fact that he is wrong. Also if ur stuck on someone’s misspelled word and don’t even try to acknowledge that they have explained what makes their source credible, says enough about your miserable existence. You should maybe look at your own words and try to reflect, and who knows maybe if u change ur attitude u will meet a lovely woman that is prepared to spend at least some time with you.
go touch grass mr. Actually…🤓
dude123nice@reddit

If the USB were real, here's what it would look like on paper:
Total population: 69.1 million (3rd largest in Europe)
Total GDP (nominal): US $1.07 trillion (Ranks 6th in Europe).
GDP per capita: $15,500
Top 3 urban areas by population:
Proposed capital:
Belgrade – Because it is located right in the center of the USB
It would be Europe’s 3rd largest country by area
Ezy_Ducky@reddit
Maybe more capitals like South Africa?
Stamy31ytb@reddit
We would need 12 capitals, not just 3...
Leupateu@reddit

Why would the capital need to be the city in center? Just look at the country north of the USB, Slovakia, they have the capital right at the border, because it's the biggest city.
smrezurana_rajcica@reddit
Nah, Niš is in the centre. And it would automaticaly revitalize south of Serbia.
Fit-Hold-4403@reddit
Proposed capital: Belgrade – Because it is located right in the center of the USB
yes , just as i guessed
gotta be a Serbian posting this idea , many of them are territory lunatics
VukKiller@reddit
Brother, Serbians are the least likely to suggest Belgrade to be the capital of this imaginary map. Serbians don't even like Belgrade as is.
mmarkomarko@reddit
Speak for yourself. We are already the capital of USB whether you like it or not.
Just check out YouTube and tiktok
Lokalni_dziber@reddit
Ew, evil serb teritorry lunatic... Yeah try to fit me into your fanfic narrative. The idea was proposed by gpt, not by me, because it makes sense as an option as it is right in the center and 4th most popolous area. If the capital was the most populous city, it would be Athens, which would be quite far away from Bucharest, Budapest, Bratislava, Zagreb, etc.
If you are searching for someone to have a keyboard war duel with, Go do that with chatgpt, since all I did was ctrlc ctrlv
Comfortable-Elk67@reddit

Pistefka@reddit
Not to mention waterpolo and handball.
LivingIntensely@reddit
We'd be able to rival the Premier League!!!🤣 The shape of USB is very advantageous, traveling should be relatively swift, most highways are (almost) connected, no?
And we will not have to export players to bigger leagues anymore. Viewership would increase, prize money too. There'd be no incentive to leave. Look at the Netherlands and Belgium. Affluent countries but population way too small, not big enough of a viewership, they are reduced to a "selling league". And the population...France has 65 mill? Germany has 80 mill? Much easier to pool elite talent for a quality first league and have a decent 2nd league too.
With our small populations we always basically have to sell our 2-3 great basketball and football players in the league to the US or Central and Western European countries.
Same goes for the employment market😂 we emmigrate, we don't have immigration We do not pool talented immigrants, we are them.
If you're a small country, you better have either an amazing advantage (like the Rotterdam harbor that brings in so much money, or being surrounded by mountains not having to defend your borders like the Swiss, developing unobstructed) or a colonial past that has allowed you to perpetuate your dominion way past your empire days🤣
Be it through banking or corporations in the retail, lodging, automotive domains etc.
Such unions are not illogical. They were proposed during the Concert of Europe period (1815-1914). Two countries stand a better chance than one. In the empire times that meant survival against the threat of neighboring empires. We don't have empires anymore, but the economical dominion is still looming. How much can you really raise your head?
Granted, this union right here is way too big. I personally always wondered how successful and practical a union between Bulgaria and Romania would be. Very similar, brotherlike countries. We share a sea. Greece could be thrown into the mix. Maybe Hungary-Romania-Bulgaria.

Why was Eastern Thrace left off the map?
Kaamos_666@reddit
So you want eastern Thrace to be ripped off of Turkey and added to Balkan country? I don’t think so. I want my Kırklareli with Türkiye for so many reasons. Mainly because, I can’t imagine how 2nd class citizens the muslim/Turks would be in this imaginary country.
H3XC0D3CYPH3R@reddit
Are we geographically connected to Central Africa, my dear brother? Was your father in the banana business? Aren't we in the Balkans? Why do you put political spin on everything? You mention Sadık Ahmet and Western Thrace, but when you give examples, you give examples of those who immigrated to Germany. No one is interested in treating you like a fifth-class citizen.
Kaamos_666@reddit
I think you’re answering to the wrong person here. Anyway my point is clear. United States of Balkans can go without Eastern Thrace. Not again… It has been only 30+ years since Zhivkov tried to assimilate Turks of Bulgaria, Srebrenica massacre etc. Balkan Christians will always be discriminative against Turks/muslims and they’ll act ruthless once they’re in a position of power. Eastern Thrace belongs with Turkey
Cute-Passage-9741@reddit
Imagine someone came en masse to your lands with completely alien culture and way of life, massacred a part of your people, rape and stole your women and children and subjugated another. I mean the attitude Balkan people have towards Turks is kinda understandable, no?
Kaamos_666@reddit
That doesn’t make it any better. What are you trying to justify here? Did Turks of Bulgaria harm any ethnic Bulgarians to deserve that treatment back in 1989? You’re just making up excuses for violence.
Cute-Passage-9741@reddit
I didnt say that they deserved such treatment. I just said that such an attitude from Balkaners towards Turks was undertandable from a historical perspective. Of course, it wasnt fair. You have to remember as well that in case of Bulgaria it was not people's decision but the Communist Government who decided to treat its own citizens of muslim faith like that.
Jack55555@reddit
Last time these countries were together with Turkey, it wasn’t all fun and games.
H3XC0D3CYPH3R@reddit

dandelion_2001@reddit
It may be due to the fact that Eastern Thrace is part of Turkey and if they include that little part they'll have to include the whole of Turkey as well. Unless Eastern Thrace becomes independent and joins the union...

nicubunu@reddit
Actually we Romanians don't consider ourselves Balkan, but if you include us, then you must include Moldova too, it's the same country (half of Moldova is in Romania, the other half is Republic of Moldova).
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit
I’ve seen many Romanians say they’re Balkan
nicubunu@reddit
I think I saw a little more Romanians :) Probably in the South there are some, but generally not. And I say this knowing one of my grand-grand parents was Bulgarian and another Serbian.
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit
I mean geographically it’s definitely not Balkan, culturally tho ? I think it is
CataVlad21@reddit
100% culturally. Or maybe some debate over parts of Transilvania 😛 but we getting pretty damn balkanized as well, and fast.

Shatter_Their_World@reddit
Well, the language is form of Romanian, some its native speakers consider themselves Romanians, some do not. There are large Russian and Ukrainian minorities, of course, but there is more to it. There is also a Bulgarian region and a Turkish region, the Turkish region being autonomous. It is considered that the Bulgarians came from the Dobrudja region, although some might be survivors from the time of Bulgarian Tzardoms. The south was part of the Ottoman Empire, being ruled by a Pasha. Romanians and Moldovians share not only the language, but most of the culture. It makes sense to be considered part of the Balkans, if not geographically, at least linguistically and culturally.
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit
It’s too Russian and Eastern influenced to be Balkan.
Shatter_Their_World@reddit
I would not say that, at least for the majority of the population, that is Romanian speaking. They are clearly more similar to those Romanians who speak the Moldovian dialect in Romania (from the Prut river to the Eastern Carpathians, a region of the principality of Moldova that still the same dialect that was never under Russian or Soviet rule) then to Russians (from Russia) and Ukrainians (from Ukraine). The Russians and Ukrainians from Moldova have themselves Balkanic influences, due to proximity of the Romanian speakers, but also due to the Bulgarian and Turkish minorities. I would say Moldova is a South-East European (Balkan) land with strong North-Eastern European affinities, without being North-Eastern proper.
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit
Moldova is fully eastern European…

Pls include Moldova too. We, just like you, like to spend all our money made while working in Germany for 5 years on a new, 200,000km BMW/Audi/Mercedes 3.0 diesel DPF off.

Just for rage bait purposes ofc

It'll count once we retake it
Ninevolts@reddit
Turkey will be United States of Anatolia instead. Ionia, Thracia, Mysia, Paphlagonia, Phrygia, Galatia, Pisidia, Lycia, Caria, Cilicia, Corduene, Pontus, Cappadocia and of course, the REAL Armenia. Not sure if they'll get along though.

leobutters@reddit
Proverbial hook
chunek@reddit
As far as I understand your original phrase, it would imply that we have some obligation or responsibility towards Serbia, that you hold us accountable for..
But perhaps you meant not letting us go and leaving the Balkans just because we don't share a country anymore?
If the latter is true, I don't personally mind the friendly gesture of making us feel included. I think we definitely shouldn't take it for granted. But I usually don't like to associate with the doomerism, and all the cringy "we all hate each other, but are actually family" bullshit, among some other things. Also, non-exyu Balkan countries are more or less completely alien. It doesn't make any sense, for us to be in the same region as Bulgaria or Greece, or Albania, when there is a neighbour up north, whom we share history with since the 7th or 8th century. We are Balkan (partially) because of Yugoslavia, we don't have the legacy of the Ottoman rule, or the Byzantines, etc. However, that doesn't take anything away from our time together, our nationa grew up during both Yugoslavias, it influenced us a lot, and there will always be a connection between us, no matter where someone draws the borders.
As for the "USB", no thank you, we have the EU.

cvele89@reddit
Now the Turkey will complain why it's not included, because they have some small portion of Balkan soil under their flag. Then they will complain about the name - for some strange reason, they would be more happy with some furniture name instead.
Cute-Passage-9741@reddit
Literally noone from Turkiye is complaining, I dont really believe they geniuinely want to be part of all this mess. But not including them (at least european and Aegean part of the country) but Include Moldova nd Hungary doesn't seem fair to me by all metrics.
Only-Dimension-4424@reddit
I don't think so since our country big and diverse enough , no need to further expansion, so good luck in your new state but I doubt Greeks are ok with this🤣
cvele89@reddit
Tell that to Murad I. 😛
Only-Dimension-4424@reddit
Those glory days are over...😭
Comfortable-Elk67@reddit
Why should we complain about the name? “Balkan” is literally a Turkish word (meaning “wooded” mountain in Turkish). The Ottoman Turks shaped much of the region’s culture and identity.
Least-Rub-1397@reddit
Tabure empire And they would probably knock on Vienna gates for the third time in history.
