Which songs do you think are widely known across the UK, regardless of ethnicity, social status, region, or age?

Do you recall a song that, when played, everyone around would know at least a bit of it—except for the national anthem?

I was horrified the other day when I discovered that neither my mum or dad knew Mr Brightside. They aren’t that old, late sixties / early seventies and they listen to some current music. I didn’t believe them when they said they didn’t know it so I played it and they didn’t recognise it. How is it possible to have not encountered it somehow in life while living in the uk????

Suspect we are same age. But it was Dire Straits, Susanne Vega and Prince on every car journey and that was the extent of pop - home and parties was all world music and musicians playing. Hippy parents. Reflects now.

I am aware it exists, and of him in general, but if you played anything by him I wouldn't know it. Same with that Taylor Swift person.
I didn't downvote tho
No-Locksmith6662@reddit
I was going to say something like Hotel California by the Eagles but then I'm not massively connected with the "youth" today so have no idea whether anyone younger than my own age group (mid 30s) would know 70s soft rock?
Otherwise probably something connected with sport like Three Lions.
