Was the State Fair a huge deal for you every year as a kid?

(U.S. centric post, I know, sorry). The State Fair was a MAJOR milestone for us every year, and I’m guessing this breaks down regionally—like probably folks who grew up in NYC or LA weren’t super invested in the 4-H scene. But as a midwestern kid, holy shit, we loved the State Fair. The food, the livestock judging, the BUTTER COW (life sized cow sculpture made of literal butter in a refrigerated case), the Commercial Building with the Salad Shooter demonstrations, the Craft Building with the crocheted Barbie dresses—it was incredible. I think there was a dirt bike track? There were definitely shitty cover bands and local politicians handing out paper fans and the Dept of Natural Resources had a sweet “local fish and wildlife” display. We weren’t allowed on the Midway because the rides were unsafe according to our mom, “held down by safety pins,” in her words. Anyway, that does it. I’m getting tickets and taking my 10 year old nephew this month. Hell yeah.
