OP wants to start the 3rd Balkan war over here. As a Bulgarian I demand a color between yellow and green as I don’t want to be put in the same group as Serbia yet admit Romania is ahead in most aspects.
Exotic_Cantaloupe_96@reddit
As a Greek, I agree, Bulgaria is improving on all aspects and has made a giant leap in the last 10 years. I love to see balkans catching up to the west, everything is better here apart from salaries. Even infrastructure is getting better in the balkans than most parts of england where I live (yes I m here for the money)
Quiet-Pressure4920@reddit
Been to Bulgaria this year and can confirm their infrastructure is legit behind Serbia's which actually had me shocked.
Inevitable-Theory901@reddit
I was going to Slovenia last summer and had to go thru Croatia at night. I don't remember the exact highway, but it was so f*ing bumpy. Probably the worst highway I've ever seen. Especially compared to Serbia.
Quiet-Pressure4920@reddit
Croatia usually has insanely good highways, way better than ours, so I'm surprised! :O
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
I visited northwestern Bulgaria (poorest part of the country, someone said) and I was genuinely shocked. Level of development there was as bad as Bosnia
roctac@reddit
It is Bulgaria's poorest region. They are trying to make it better.
plmcoae@reddit
Bulgaria shocked me with how bad their highways are, I had to dodge craters on the HIGHWAY, We have bad roads in Romania aswell but the highways are impeccable
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
Macedonia made me appreciate Serbia’s highways more 😂. We went from smooth driving to fearing for our lives the moment we crossed into NM
Quiet-Pressure4920@reddit
yeah i really was surprised cause i was convinced EU=better highways than Serbia.
Our highways are also maintained and really good.
MartinBP@reddit
Some of your highway sections in the south are actually built by Bulgarian companies and they build them better than they do here. It's all corruption, a way for GERB-MRF to syphon EU funds.
Quiet-Pressure4920@reddit
thats actually insane lol
Jazzlike_Day5058@reddit
"Everything is better here" - Lol.
Exotic_Cantaloupe_96@reddit
Weather, food, scenery/nature, community, family values, festivities, traditions, friendships, nightlife.. anyone else want to add to the list?
Jazzlike_Day5058@reddit
The blue car liquid isn't potable.
Velzevul666@reddit
As a Greek too, I have to say that Romania is taking leaps ahead of us. Also, Bulgarian bros, prepare to get fucked once you join the euro....
Exotic_Cantaloupe_96@reddit
Romania is the brightest example in the balkans. They have built a solid economy, well trained workforce, understood that technological innovation is a must and have put us all to shame. Romania is the Poland of the Balkans.
HelloThereItsMeAndMe@reddit
England ist not the West. England and France are know n to have subpar infrastructure.
Zura_Orokamono@reddit
OP, make Bulgaria orange, they've been naughty.
Ok-Shift-4548@reddit
But when I visit Sofia, I feel it is like hundreds of times worse then Belgrade. Even while driving through Bulgaria the land feels empty and poor. Infrastructure is worse, airport, almost every aspect. Belgrade feels like New York compared to Sofia. And I’m not from Belgrade
Informal_Material_23@reddit
belgrade is more advanced than sofia but bulgaria as a whole is more advanced than serbia
Ok-Shift-4548@reddit
I agree
Sea-Temporary-6995@reddit
lol wut :D
Maybe if you've only ever been in Lyulin district lol
Ok-Shift-4548@reddit
not literally, don't take it seriously hahah :D
AideSpartak@reddit
Lmao that’s not true at all. I don’t particularly like Sofia but Belgrade doesn’t feel like nyc compared to it, don’t get ridiculous. The only things that were actually better was that it’s on 2 rivers and that there is a bigger pedestrian only zone in the centre
Ok-Shift-4548@reddit
A lot more things to visit and see in Belgrade, architecture, restaurants, I mean everything. But maybe I visited wrong city centre at Sofia 😂
AideSpartak@reddit
That’s your opinion though. More restaurants and architecture that you like still doesn’t make it a more advanced or developed city. Where’s you subway network?
And sure, Belgrade has more nice architecture in the centre but it’s all so crammed together. Sofia has big open spaces for the more interesting buildings. I like Belgrade but it’s a ridiculous thing to say that Sofia lags behind or looks poor next to it, when it’s the objectively more developed and richer city
Ok-Shift-4548@reddit
I never said it’s not just my opinion. So don’t take this seriously. I should explore Sofia more in depth for sure. For example I really like sea and old Nesebar city. 👌
AideSpartak@reddit
I personally don’t like Sofia. It’s just objectively not a less developed city than Belgrade
Nessabar is nice. You should check Plovdiv and Varna
Ok-Shift-4548@reddit
I will, thanks for recommendations
Rudolfius@reddit
Belgrade has the 2 big rivers and the fortress area which is quite nice and I think elevate the city. Definitely didn't feel any New York vibes though :D Sofia has Vitosha, but in terms of the average living neighborhood, I don't see a big difference between them.
I recently had a pretty extensive road trip through Serbia, and lets just say I really don't agree with the second part of your post.
Also, I think Bulgaria has only started pulling away from Serbia in things like GDP per capita in recent years which will not have an immediate effect on things like architecture, how wealthy a neighborhood feels and so on.
Ok-Shift-4548@reddit
In quality of life it seems that Bulgaria is getting better, bigger average salary, EU, etc
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
tbh when I visited Bulgaria it barely felt different than Serbia to me. But that was the north western part, city of Vidin.
oChrizs@reddit
Mkay. Vidin is one of the poorest large cities. If you're visiting, visit Plovdiv, Varna or Burgas. Those cities are pretty nice
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
I only visited Vidin cause I was staying with my grandparents who had a house in Negotin. So Vidin was close
oChrizs@reddit
Fair enough! Just saying if you ever want to visit Bulgaria as a tourist.
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
I’d like to !
vbd71@reddit
Oh boy... If you compare Serbia to Vidin, this doesn't look good for Serbia.
Vidin is... a demographic desert. A warzone could be better.
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
I figured it was fucked up by the looks of it
itWedMiDuds@reddit
To be fair, Vidin is the worst performing large city in Bulgaria
Albekvol@reddit
Not only in Bulgaria but actually the EU region with the lowest quality of life and economic opportunities and development. It’s very disheartening.
arcane_labor92@reddit
It was borders the poorest part of Serbia so there's that too.
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
oh damn I didn’t know that, although it makes sense. Parts of the city seemed run down, while other parts were developing
maximhar@reddit
Bulgaria has super shit road infrastructure and because of the demographic crisis many parts of the country look like a wasteland. Yet most macroeconomic indicators like GDP/capita put us closer to Romania than Serbia. Same with social indicators like corruption perception, freedom of the press, etc. And let’s not forget Schengen and (soon) the Euro.
Rudolfius@reddit
Bulgaria might not have great roads, but it's still ahead of most of the rest of the Balkans. Anyone who doesn't realize this, simply hasn't driven across the west Balkans/some of the non-highway roads in Serbia.
Kaer__Morhen@reddit
Freedom of press? What is that? Is it eatable?
av-f@reddit

iongion@reddit
I moved abroad 13 years ago. It is corruption brother, at systemic level, a few years ago I went with my father to the doctor, now it is my turn. It was a private clinic, as now I can afford it ... and at the end... what do you think my father does ? He gives an "attention" to the doctor ... "to be nice".... so that "next time he sees him differently/treats him differently" ... Even at a private clinic?!?! DAAAAADD!!!
Another one, I go to my 95+ years old grandfather, country side, during orthodox easter. I don't know if you have the same custom, we are supposed to take bread & wine from the church somewhere around 4-5 AM the second day. Now my grandfather calls me and tells "Please go in my place, I am old and I cannot anymore!" - I did it in a blink, remembering how it was always him all our childhood doing it. BUT just before leaving, he gives me something about 25 euro if you convert, which is still not little money to give, especially for country side. I asked him: Grandpa, why ? I have too, but why ? .... "Shut-up nephew, go there, and you will see!".
And there I was, most of the priests being childhood friends I did not see in 30 years, in my childhood/communist time, there was only one, now there are 3, the population being 6 times smaller.
I understand finally why he gave me, now priests don't explicitly ask for your money, you can take the wine and bread without paying.... BUT ... there is a book/codex where they write the person name and the amount of donation. So... when in Rome, do like the Romans! It was also grandfather will, which is law for the nephews!
Second day, after I get back home and I ask him, ok grandpa, I understand, but still ask him why, it is not Christian at all.
So, in the end, he explains me!
Listen my nephew, when my neighbor 3 houses away died, he died a scrooge/cheap man, the priest went to the cemetery, he said rest-in-peace, clapped his hands and that was it. BUT when the neighbor 6 houses away died, he did his deeds before and the priest talked of how good of a man he was, how a hard worker he was, how much he has accomplished and then he clapped his hands.
BUT grandfather, when you die, you die, why do you care ?
Grandfather: "What sentence is that ? You make no sense! IT IS FOR YOU! YOU WERE RAISED BY A MAN!
I despise churches and what they have become, I like priests individually, I have my own quest in faith, but even this is so corrupted, I don't even know if it was ever different in all its history!

I came here to demand justice for Bulgaria as well :))
Revolutionary-Fan236@reddit

LargeFriend5861@reddit
Not really. We are shockingly similar. Their country just grew faster due to being basically the same economy as us, but with more people. Plus, they took on a lot more debt, which helped initially, but is kinda biting them rn.

Affectionate-Arm-405@reddit
I guess you also consider every europe map the includes russia to be garbage
CallofMargin@reddit
absolutely. however, russia still has much stronger ties to europe than turkey does
Affectionate-Arm-405@reddit
I don't understand who made"ties" the criteria. In my eyes you are either geographically in the Balkan region or you're not.
Everything else is just subjective
maria_paraskeva@reddit
The Muscovy emerged from the Kievan Rus.
The Seljuks originate from the heart of the Middle East.
It's not subjective when you draw a clear juxtaposition. If we delve into your purely "geographical" semantical rhetoric, then Italy is geographically an African country because of its Lampedusa island in the African continent...
raceregos@reddit
Seljuks and the Middle East? Why you only take them into account but not the others that came after and before? Why are you trying so hard to make Turkey a Middle Eastern country? Clearly Turks are originated from Central Asia and if you go even further back in time, from Siberia. And the Ottoman Empire was founded in Söğüt/Bursa in Anatolia.
Jazzlike_Day5058@reddit
Turks originate from Mongolia, Central Asia, not Siberia.
raceregos@reddit

Affectionate-Arm-405@reddit
Not sure why you put geographically in air quotes lol. Turkey is both an Asian country and a European country. Russia is both an Asian country and a European country. Countries are human creations. If they don't follow natural separations like tectonic plates. You can believe whatever you want for Turkey but geographically they also belong in Europe
ByzantineCat0@reddit
Applying your logic:
Greece is both a European and an Asian country...
France is both a European and an American, and an African, and an Oceanian country...
The UK is both a European and a... Continental country?
"You can believe whatever you want, but geographically they also belong there"
ByzantineCat0@reddit
Lmao do people even know what overseas territories are?
Affectionate-Arm-405@reddit
Yes but nobody takes seriously a comparison of an overseas territory with Istanbul that 15% of the country lives
Fruloops@reddit
Finally, a rare voice of reason
No-Start-6254@reddit
In my geography class in school we lesrned that every country that has its capital in a certain continent, is a part of thst continent. Russia's capital in in europe, however turkey's capital is not. Therefore it's not european
Only-Dimension-4424@reddit
Dumb logic, so if Turkey relocated its capital Istanbul then will be European ? Or Russia relocated to Siberia their capital so they become Asian 🤣🤣🤣
No-Start-6254@reddit
Weather or not it is considered asian or europea ln doesn't affect their relations and influence in the world sow beside how we citizens view that country it will literaly have no effect
Affectionate-Arm-405@reddit
if capital affects relations and influence it's worth noting that Istanbul is larger than the capital itself and it has a lot of gravity itself and considered very influential in the region. More than Ankara
No-Start-6254@reddit
I noted how i have learned it in school. I think it's a good way to assign multicontinental countries to the lroper continents. Another 2 ways i would judge a country by is it's culture and how much of the population lives on the continent. For russia the majority of the country lives in europe and the culture is clearly east european. I was in turkey and the culture is definetly not european. It felt more like egypt than europe. Also the majority of the turkish people live in the asian part of turkey. Therefore i do not see turkey as an european country even if it has a small portion of itself in europe. The same way i don't see france as an south american country (french guiana) or african country (mayotte island)
Only-Dimension-4424@reddit
Still giving dumb examples? 🤣 sure let's compare ocean way territories with just next to Europe , thus concept of Europe is not just about geographical since it has arbitrary borders which they keep changed borders time to time , Turkey is one of most influenced country who shaped Europe and European history and today has still biggest and one of the most iconic and historic city of Europe , so that's why it's considered as European as well , but most correct definition is Eurasian since you cannot ignore all of those
Affectionate-Arm-405@reddit
I think 15% of Turkey's population living in Europe is a significant amount. Unlike Mayotte island. If it's the majority or not (it has to be 51% and not 49%?) is arbitrary IMO
No-Start-6254@reddit
Still, that makes turkey an asian country and not european
Affectionate-Arm-405@reddit
I never debated the fact that it's Asian. But it is a big country with 1/6 of the population living in Europe and their most influential and strategic city in Europe as well, I think it is foolish not to include it in European maps.
No-Start-6254@reddit
Yes. That is correct

DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
It’s green bordering yellow. Didn’t feel like putting it in the same category as other yellow countries
YetiDerSchneemensch@reddit
Swear it’s yellow around 80% of the time. Anecdotal, but I have personally witnessed greater poverty in Romania than I have in Serbia or Montenegro.
PisicaIntergalactica@reddit
Ofc you are a Brit. You guys loved to talk shit about Romania since always.
YetiDerSchneemensch@reddit
Sharing my experience isn’t “talking shit”. I love Romanian and Romanians. Why so sensitive?
PisicaIntergalactica@reddit
It’s not being sensitive. Because of you guys and your negative propaganda about Romania we face discrimination.
YetiDerSchneemensch@reddit
“You guys”? First off, assuming everyone in Britain has the same views is obviously racist. Secondly, most British people don’t even think about Romania. Thirdly, what “negative propaganda” have I spread? I simply shared my honest experience. I understand that you don’t like that, but that does not give you the right to censor me which you are clearly trying to do with your attacks. Sharing my experience of seeing poverty in Romania that was worse and more widespread than in Serbia and Montenegro is not racist, prejudice or “propaganda” as you nonsensically claim. You are attacking me baselessly. I sincerely hope you will reflect on this and apologise.
PisicaIntergalactica@reddit
I didn’t delete any previous comment, and to be fair, I don’t think that I have been rude. BUT, maybe, there is an age gap between me and you and I have been quite direct and informal, which can come across as rude if you are not used or you are not in your twenties. I didn’t mean to be mean towards you personally or British people generally, neither towards your country. Therefore I apologise if I made you feel this way. HOWEVER, what I really meant in comments is that I fell that your government and politicians, besides the media, worked really hard to portray Eastern European people under a bad light. The “Polish plumber” effect started in the Uk, did you know that? Romania was a little bit more unlucky cause we had a whole documentary made by one of your tv channels, named “THE ROMANIANS ARE COMING” portraying Romania and Romanian people in a very unfair and untrue way. British people immediately started tripping. Also, one of the most mentioned reasons for Brexit among those who voted in favour was the fact that they didn’t want any more Romanians coming to the UK. Now, that being said, I think you guys, AS WHOLE, are a little bit (if not more) negatively influenced and biased towards your view on Romania as a country. I don’t know when you have been to Romania the last time, you said you have seen a lot of poverty, more than in other countries. You should compare equally, the poorest zones of these countries and the richest to have a REAL metric. If you went from ten richest and most touristic zones of Montenegro and Serbia, to the least ones from Romania, you cannot really state that (besides that, Yougoslavia was more advanced and rich than communist Romania, there are many things to say here but I’ll keep it short). Of course, there is poverty, wrong things that happen in Romania AND there is always room for improvement. We need to learn from other from our mistakes and be inspired by the positive achievements of other countries and take them as an example. But you should also be more realistic and recognise that Romania is not anymore in the yellow line in the Balkans nor in Eastern Europe. GDP, salary, human rights, if your compare economic, social, political indicators you will not see the yellow you mentioned so often anymore. That’s your bias, because you come from the UK and the majority of you have many misconceptions of what’s real and what’s feeding you your media and government. Seriously, your comment came off very rude and not real at all. For the rest, have a nice evening and enjoy your weekend. Again, I didn’t want to attack you and neither argue. This is what I think, and by the upvotes and downvotes, I am not the only one feeling this way.

I would want Bosnia to move forward, but I see it is a sinking ship.
CivilPerspective5804@reddit
It's actually better now than it's ever been. I'm seriously considering moving back from Austria.
Inevitable-Abies-812@reddit
Even though the political situation is as it is?
In which sense is Bosnia better now than ever before? Young people are still leaving the country, everything is extremely expensive. I will never return, but my reasons are more personal.
CivilPerspective5804@reddit
The political situation has been the same for 30 years. In 1996, one year after the srebenica genocide there were serbians driving around in trucks waving serbian flags, playing war music and tauting the survivors. So if anything things are more chill now.
As for things now, my friends and are are all in IT. Those with the same experience as me earn the same or more after taxes than I do in Austria. Most IT companies work for foreigners. You can also freelance or charge through your own business in which case you only pay 10-11% in taxes.
And that money means more. Instead of 700 a month for 20 square meters on the outskirts of Vienna, I could pay 400 - 500 euros a month for a 3 bedroom in the center. And while food has gotten more expensive, it is still half the price or less than in Austria.
Day to day life is very relaxed and slow, drinking coffee with friends going to events.
So it seems to me the days when you would come here to earn tons of money have passed, and I’m wondering why am I living away from friends and family when I can seemingly get similar conditions at home.
SignificantCrew5728@reddit
It's nostalgia, and it's lying to you. Within a year you would be like "fuck this"
I have seen many cases like that. Nostalgia deludes people completely, they finally move here and then after the initial honeymoon period they start remembering why they have left in the first place
It's not worth it. You will go through the trouble of moving back, will feel really good for a couple of months at best, and then it's back to reality
And in reality - Bosnia sucks. It might not look that way when you are visiting here or when your friends are lying to you because they want you back, but the reality of living here even with a good salary is very different.
CivilPerspective5804@reddit
I spend 2 weeks every month in bosnia for the past few years. I’ve been in bosnia for the past 4 months in a row.
And I’ve both seen my friends pay slips, and also every year we go on a month long trip somewhere. Last trip we visited japan and korea. They’re also vacationing in spain or italy for 2 weeks as well, which I also do. We also have other friends around Europe and visit each other and work from each other’s homes for like a week.
If you have a good income it enables a lot of freedom, and remove a lot of stress you normally have in bosnia. I remember my first job, and how it was when your car needs fixing.
I am however not the type to be in only one place, so I don’t expect to leave Austria soon, but also if I get a better paid remote job, I really have to consider it.
Inevitable-Abies-812@reddit
I appreciate that you took the time to respond.
Now it's clear to me why you'd want to go back. I would agree that making money (or saving money) in Austria has become increasingly difficult in the past couple of years.
However, I left Bosnia for personal reasons and I'm very happy in my new home country.

The way Slovenia performs in every way and index close to former colonial powers, is impressive. Even median wealth of Slovenia is above Germany (which Germany is only one position above Greece)
What does the water have in this country?
Snoo46862@reddit
It could be a lot better but we suffer from corruption and idiots in parlament to show the central Europe we are still balkan 💪
johndelopoulos@reddit
You are doing better than most of Central Europe, as far as i know
Amil2323232@reddit
Serbia and Montenegro ahead of NM and Bosnia? How come?
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
easily
Amil2323232@reddit
Maybe in some other dimension
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
are you being delusional on purpose or what ? NM and Bosnia are both behind Serbia and Montenegro in 99% of statistics. Don’t argue with me, argue with numbers
Amil2323232@reddit
Those statistics are not accurate because of various reasons, in real life they're 99% in the same situations more or less, except for maybe political stability, that's where Bosnia is of course behind.
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
I don’t agree. Both Serbia and MN are visibly more developed than Bosnia and NM. You see it by infrastructure, roads, education etc…I’m not saying Serbia is developed, the Southern part is very poor - but you can see the difference between Serbia overall and Bosnia/Macedonia. Driving in Macedonia had me scared for my life
Amil2323232@reddit
Montenegro better education these those countries? 🤔
Sandzakguy@reddit
Bosnia and Kosovo never have any data lol
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
Add NM and Montenegro in there as well
samonekatako@reddit
Bosnia and Herzegovina should be black
Suspicious-Neat-5954@reddit
Guys guys we are all at the bottom if you zoom out from the balkans a little bit 😆
akasa-hassaku@reddit
Except Slovenia
HumanMan00@reddit
Yellow be like: You've heard of Jugoslavia, but how about Pravoslavia?!
Needs more Macedonia tho.
TestingAccountByUser@reddit
I dont remember greece and cockroach being those colors usually
johndelopoulos@reddit
Greece is usually these colors, except occasionally even more above
PckMan@reddit
I mean everyone's falsifying data anyways so it doesn't matter.
cvaggelis95@reddit
Malta is perfectly rounded
Only-Dimension-4424@reddit
Not really since Turkey is above the yellow ones in most things
No_Firefighter5926@reddit
Above in what?
Democracy index, Corruption perception index, Legatum prosperity index, Global peace index, economic freedom index and in many many more indexes and metrics Turkey is in the rock bottom alongside Asian and even some African countries.
Also recent years Bulgaria surpass in GDP nominal per capita too as Turkish currency getting closer and closer to be considered toilet paper. So yeah Turkey is quite ok in that colour. Also with Erdogan one more decade will end it up in even darker colour to be honest
Only-Dimension-4424@reddit
🤣relax hater! Turkey is higher HDI, higher life expectancy, higher gdp per capita ppp, and it was higher gdp per capita than Bulgaria till recently, those are the metrics matter not you stated random bs up there
ChumQuibs@reddit
Seriously. Turkey is ahead of these nutjobs.
Only-Dimension-4424@reddit
Yep, almost in every metric despite we have Kurdish dominated backward the east , this villagers downvoted me🤣

No-Cream-7647@reddit
Its true though
James-Hart557@reddit
Why is Serbia on there twice?
InsideScratch4581@reddit
Romania is yellow too
omnitreex@reddit
Kosovo is gray, actually. To lazy to give out data.
Substratas@reddit
The only metric keeping Albania light red is the average lifespan of Albanian people, otherwise we would be dark red like Moldova & Kosovo too.
Substratas@reddit
Albania would be dark red too had the average lifespan been like the rest of the Balkans (minus Greece). That’s the only metric keeping our HDI above 0.8 too.

kytheon@reddit
You forgot Portugal.
Like all of Europe is green and then Portugal is orange, just like Serbia and Bulgaria.
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
nah basically western europe is all blue and then portugal is light green lol, I’d say comparable with Croatia
DifferentSurvey2872@reddit (OP)
also, Bosnia is supposed to be the same shade as NM and Albania…
Amil2323232@reddit
And Serbia's supposed to be the best out of all of them, better tjan Slovenia, ekonomski tigar
Competitive-Read1543@reddit
I think Albania is yellow now though

It's true
Affectionate-Arm-405@reddit
Also, Greece has fallen. Early 2000s Greece was the king of the Balkans (I know it's not a very hard thing to do). I see Greece falling back more and more every year that goes by. Maybe there's a slight growth uptick last couple years but not much. The growth in Turkey was huge.
Excellent_Jeweler_43@reddit
It’s kind of weird how much Turkey has fallen in recent years. Used to be Turkey and Greece with green and then the rest of the balkans varying shades of red
