This one is a bit silly looking.
crafteramuka@reddit
Name?
InstructionOwn2106@reddit
You can actually read some of the plaque. It’s a Conair NC-131H. Basically a test bed to mimick the flight characteristics of new planes.
crafteramuka@reddit
My bd. Thanks
Cadillac16Concept@reddit
Conair N-C131H I guess
Jcrm87@reddit
Looks like someone put a plane on a plane
spitgobfalcon@reddit
The Fiat Multipla of planes!
Sir_Michael_II@reddit
Man I wish I could remember what it was called, I think it was a twin medium cargo plane, it looked like somebody on their first day of CAD class had made it/it was a Minecraft plane. Grey. Seems like it had decent performance but it was just plain ugly. Like an old Honda civic, decent performance (in terms of mpg at least) but man they were ugly.
HornetGaming110@reddit
calling the super guppy ugly is ILLEGAL.
this ones much uglier
Frosty_Log6972@reddit
Transavia PL-12 Airtruk
honorthem@reddit
I love it so much.
Malthino@reddit
What the fuck ist even that thing. Guppy is also ugly but at least an amazing story to tell
HornetGaming110@reddit
i think it was some crop duster thing. def the ugliest plane ever
-burnr-@reddit
Behold the Belphegor.
Ugly and jet powered!
douknowhouare@reddit
Not only one of the ugliest planes of all time but one of the worst performing. Truly an aeronautical abomination!
faster_tomcat@reddit
Alexander the OK on YouTube did an outstanding video on this: https://youtu.be/ZlyO9cJ8hiQ
LucifersLoofa@reddit
His channel is absolutely fantastic
Frequent_Army_9989@reddit
it didn’t deserve wings. or fuel. or existence tbh
battlecryarms@reddit
Fugly and stupid!
HornetGaming110@reddit
Ya know the more I look at the m-15 the less ugly it looks. That would make a great airplane revival project 🤔

Frequent_Army_9989@reddit
why does this look like it belongs in Cars 4
Turbulent-Sail-3947@reddit
Lmfao
ElevatorGuy85@reddit
It’s called a Transavia PL-12 Airtruk, apparently the Skyfarmer 300 version. Made in Australia as others have mentioned, with a production run of just 138 per Wikipedia.
SirDarknessTheFirst@reddit
lol I thought I had seen that at my local aviation museum
ElevatorGuy85@reddit
There ARE a few at aviation museums around the world as Wikipedia mentions. It seems the Airtruk made it far beyond Australia’s shores!
mimaikin-san@reddit
And it was in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome
squirrel_tincture@reddit
“The Flying Jalopy,” hahaha
flopjul@reddit
The Dutch/French airline (Transavia) doesnt have anything to do with it btw
ElevatorGuy85@reddit
I should have provided a link along with my comment:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transavia_PL-12_Airtruk
flopjul@reddit
I know i should have clarified it better
The_Great_Squijibo@reddit
It's like a Cessna thata teying to be a 747 because someone told it to dress for the job you want, not the one you have.

Poor airtruk... i'd fly you.
TheTexanKiwi@reddit
Oh it gets worse, the original New Zealand design used a radial engine.
joshwagstaff13@reddit
Engine and a bunch of other stuff taken from a Harvard IIRC.
TheTexanKiwi@reddit
Harvards were a dome a dozen in NZ around that time, I believe youre correct
The_Merciless_Potato@reddit
Dusty Crophopper???
killerbacon678@reddit
There’s one decommissioned at an airport I sometimes fly to. My initial reaction when seeing it was what the fuck?
I had a close look and walked to it once, it actually has a rear seating area.
rostov007@reddit
I’ll take “What If a 747 and Kevin Hart had a baby” for $1000, Alex.
HornetGaming110@reddit
lol
hpech@reddit
Kinda reminds me of a skyhopper
HornetGaming110@reddit
how..?
No-Demand-8582@reddit
Oh god what did they do to you Dusty Crophopper
squirrel_tincture@reddit
God, what a terrible day to have eyes 😭
Really, though: I’m pretty certain that somewhere in my dearly-prized collection of my nephew’s artworks on my refrigerator door is a finger-painted illustration eerily similar to this monstrosity.
release_Sparsely@reddit
its ugly but honestly i feel like i'd have a Hell Of A Good Time playing with a lego version of it a few years ago
Informal-Rock-2681@reddit
Wonder why it's got tiny little windows at the lower rear.
Sea_Ganache620@reddit
That looks exactly like the plane I used to draw in preschool!
Miserable-Towel-5079@reddit
Naw it’s got character.
TheTucsonTarmac@reddit
Was that the plane from Mad Max beyond Thunderdome?
mvsaints@reddit
Kind of looks like Flats from SpongeBob
sir_grumph@reddit
Dear god. Is that the type of plane they used in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome?
rob189@reddit
Of course both of the ugliest planes in this thread had to have Australian tail numbers…
Malcolm2theRescue@reddit
And probably deadly poisonous
Tazziedevil04@reddit
Ah yes, the Australian f__up. Thankfully good at its job
jubjubs-rock@reddit
i love that it kind of looks like a clown fish
Frosty_Log6972@reddit
Transavia PL-12 Airtruk
GITS75@reddit
The Nimrod MK.3 wasn't enough.. so another British delicacy... The Short SC.1
HortonFLK@reddit
I actually think this one looks kinda cool.
Miserable-Towel-5079@reddit
That looks like a spaceship. Kind of awesome.
GITS75@reddit
I guess I found one of the less unfavorable pics. But to be fair it was more designed as an experimental aircraft (4 engines for S/VTOL and just one for forward trust...A difficult concept for a fighter).
sven305@reddit
Short Skyvan
DDSC12@reddit
Airballs, the movie!
Thoron2310@reddit
You fucking take that back!
The Skyvan is adorable!
bout-tree-fitty@reddit
This one looks like the plane would try to flap its wings to fly.
Fentonata@reddit
I never thought the Skyvan was ugly until now, seeing that livery. It’s almost humiliating putting the BA blue belly on it.
hennabeak@reddit
Did a child design this?
Heavy-Ad5385@reddit
How does that thing even fly?!!
Jcrm87@reddit

The Short Seamew was quite the challenger too.
Naval aircraft have really odd operating parameters which are opposed to any beauty parameters.
hydromatic456@reddit
Nah that was just British aerospace design during the Cold War (not the Vulcan though, it can be in the cool kids club)
Jurassic_Bun@reddit
I mean as you say the Vulcan, but there is also the Concorde, Hawker Hunter, Valiant, Meteor, Venom and for some the Victor and Nimrod.
I’d argue Britain had the most beautiful as well as some of the most ugly coldwar planes, they also had the best names.
MikaAlaric@reddit
That might be the most fitting name ever given to an airplane though. It feels like a UPS driver is going to step out at any second.
SandorMate@reddit
cardbord plen
slinger301@reddit
Burt Rutan model 202 Boomerang.
Actually looks quite nice at first. But the more you look at it, the crazier it gets. But I admit I love that it's engineered to fly straight if either engine cuts out.
AxelNotRose@reddit
Looks like my 5 year old's attempt at building a plane with lego.
CardOk755@reddit
Blohm und voss wannabe.
PzkpfwLeopard2K72@reddit
Have you ever heard of the BF-109 Z-1? Or the F-82 Twin Mustang? Or the P-38 Lightning?
slinger301@reddit
Oh yes, P-38 is one of my faves. But those planes will yaw severely* if a single engine cuts out. The Boomerang was designed so weird so that it will fly relatively straight on either engine (or both).
PzkpfwLeopard2K72@reddit
That's... strange. But ok. Anyways does it have any gun strap-on points? Asking for a friend (the US military).
slinger301@reddit
Only if you're up for a grunts 'n' crafts project
PzkpfwLeopard2K72@reddit
Or... they'll just use their unlimited budget to create some sort of AA and AG missles that attatch right to it.
chupacadabradoo@reddit
It looks like it’s being flown by Marylin Manson
Swisskommando@reddit
May I present: the Fairey Gannett. Who could say no to that face.
OldEquation@reddit
Yeah but the double wing fold is very impressive.
HansCrotchfelt@reddit
For me, it was always the Blackburn Skua!
Yapod@reddit
Blackburn was something else man.
OldEquation@reddit
Pretty much all Blackburn aircraft were horrendously ugly. Then they made the beautiful Buccaneer.
Tavreli@reddit
Why it has a flat front canopy?
phozze@reddit
Only beaten by the Blackburn Roc.
GITS75@reddit
Before the Boeing EL/M...
damaszek@reddit
Those pesky bees
Comprehensive_Cow_13@reddit
Really impressive to turn the best looking airliner of all time into that. But, speaking as a Brit, we have a proud history of making the most beautiful and the ugliest aircraft of all time*, why not do both in one?
GITS75@reddit
** Well we had the ATAR Volant, the Coleoptera, the Leduc and the Griffon... Weird aircrafts but not that "ugly"...
And even if the Nimrod AEW Mk.3 was the cherry on the top of the cake... The ASW variants were pretty good and not that ugly.
Best looking airliner... Huhu did I feel a lil pinch of favouritism for the DH Comet 😅 My bad I preferred the Concorde in that matter.
Comprehensive_Cow_13@reddit
Hmmm, Jabiru? Alizé? They looked like Blackburn designed them 😁 and yeah, fair enough on the Concorde, I had more conventional ones in mind... Caravelle in second place there!
GITS75@reddit
I don't know about Jabiru. But honestly the Breguet Alizée didn't look that ugly .. (Yeah I saw one in a museum). For that matter the S3 Viking had my pref. And C'mon the Blackburn Buccaneer looked pretty nice.
musenseus@reddit
The Boeing hernia
GITS75@reddit
😅 (C'mon for once that was not a Boeing)
Mad_kat4@reddit
But the Nimrod without those bulges looks properly cool.
I think you meant to post the EC-135E Aria.
GITS75@reddit
This was what I wrote in another com'. The ASW variants looked 😎.
No I meant the Boeing EL/M as someone posted a picture of it.
Plane-Geek-88@reddit
Might need some ointment on that
ABoutDeSouffle@reddit

Der-Lex@reddit
It has been stung by an F/A-18 - apparently in nose AND ass.
NecessaryCarpenter59@reddit
Bombardiro Crocodilo?
GITS75@reddit
Aah aah ahah nice try.
It was a Hawker Nimrod AEW variant before UK dropped the project and finally opted for the Boeing E-3 Sentry.

Boating_Enthusiast@reddit
Can the Cricri maintain level flight with one engine out? If so, I award it 50 bonus points for wild engineering.
Frequent_Army_9989@reddit
if it does, it wins engineering bingo
BattleAnus@reddit
I'm curious, is maintaining level flight with one engine out an actual requirement for certification of multi-engine aircraft? Obviously I know it is for production airliners and stuff but I'm wondering for experimental craft like this if that's the case
Twit_Clamantis@reddit
I love the acronym ETOPS:
Engines Turm Or Passengers Swim (:-)
Boating_Enthusiast@reddit
Not sure! Just curious if the designer had two engines for functionality, looks, proof of concept, etc.
TurnoverMysterious64@reddit
Not only can it maintain level flight with one engine out:
And
And
And
The engineering on this thing is wild .
Wikipedia
Nozinger@reddit
Isn't it just an insanely lightweight aircraft?
The lighter the aircraft is the easier it is to get away with shit. G-forces are a weight multiplyer. Engine power is also mroe important when it comes to power to weight.
Would not want to fly that thing in any kind of wwindy weather though. I'd imagine you get blown all over the place.

Apparently with 15hp engines with tuned exhausts and fast props it can climb on one engine. https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2011/january/01/big-fun-in-a-small-package
I think the original had 9hp per and later plans suggested 12hp.

on3day@reddit
With the amount of money you still need to license yourself and build or buy one of these your taxes are so high you can't speak of free healthcare.
Wompie@reddit
You don’t live to use that healthcare if something happens in this plane
WillyCZE@reddit
We had one on the airfield, stored and flying. Cool as shit imo. Doesn't deserve the hate, if it wasn't for the cockpit required to fit the pilot, It'd be a pretty normal plane.
Der-Lex@reddit
Wow, never seen that one before. It’s hilariously awesome.

lujimerton@reddit
Correct. A plane can be as ugly as it wants unless it’s a fighter. Then it should look right. And 98% of them did since ww1
MattyLaw06@reddit (OP)
I wouldn't call World War I planes ugly. Back then, looks weren't their priority. They only cared about functionality, and with the limited technology they had at the time, it was hardly worth the effort to try and figure out how to use technology to make it functional while looking good. Also, it was a war. Factions only cared about functionality. They weren't planning on stunning their enemies with the pure beauty of their aircraft.
lujimerton@reddit
Oh I meant ww1 fighters looked right as well. That was inclusive.

Unpopular opinion (it’s an opinion, don’t freakin downvote) the SR-71 is kinda ugly
Snoo_33380@reddit
Upvoted, but I totally disagree. IMHO, it's just an unusual and interesting looking plane.
ILikeB-17s@reddit
I don’t think that it’s probably the worst, but I just see way too many people acting like it’s the prettiest plane when so many better ones exist
Snoo_33380@reddit
Can't disagree with the last statement! There are so many truly beautiful planes, but it doesn't make odd specimens, like Blackbird, ugly. It's also beautiful in its own way. I'm sure you think so too. BTW, what would be your pick of the most beautiful one?
ILikeB-17s@reddit
I mean, I’m a bit biased because it’s my favourite but I consider the B-17, especially early models, the most beautiful. However as for ones I think could be generally considered beautiful, the Spitfire probably tops the list. I’m pretty well known within my friend groups for considering planes well known for being ugly beautiful(Budd RB-1, P-47, MiG-27)

DCastianno21@reddit
Now why is a plane catching strays
HalRykerds@reddit
Maybe somewhat blasphemous- but the F7U Cutlass, especially after the modifications to the cockpit to make the plane slightly less likely to kill its pilot.
