Update #5 Action Needed – Potential Legal Referral

I'm here sharing my default story as it unfolds in real time. As people on this platform has asked me too. Review my other post if need be. Since there are not many current info in 2025 regarding Sallie Mae private student loans.
Here is my update #4. I have just reached 90 days of non payment with Sallie Mae private loans. I got an email stating “The legal evaluation on your loan(s) was completed. We intend to file a lawsuit against you and/or any other applicable party on your loan if you’re unable to set up acceptable payment arrangements with us before your loan defaults. Take this opportunity to prevent legal action before your loan defaults”.
I believe that this is an automated email that is generated. I also do believe it’s a scare tactic as well, however I am not afraid. I am still getting calls everyday about once daily. I recently got a voicemail from a live “manager” from Sallie Mae saying “you have one last day to contact me to offer you help etc” I am not answering any phone calls from Sallie Mae. I’ve gone cold turkey with them since my last payment in April. I just block the number and let it go to voicemail. Haven’t gotten any letters recently either. I’ll update again when I get more information as they come. Feel free to leave any questions below. This is my default journey that I’m documenting to help others in the same situation as I am. Again, I have about 80K which is increasing due to non payment. I have no co signer. No assets, my car is not in my name, I also live with my parents.

I have the same amount of defaulted debt for an art degree with no assets and I just started year 4 into default. I haven't heard a single thing out of them since I officially got my letter of default in 2021. It's all a scare tactic, just stay strong and don't give in!

Did you have a cosigner?
sstoll1990@reddit
I did but I refinanced and then strategically defaulted soon after

Ahh okay. That's gerat! My credit is so bad right now lately its been so hard to refinance. Good luck!!

Staying 100% strong. I figured it was all a scare tactic. I’m sure you received the same emails that I’m receiving? I will not respond to anything they say unless it’s a court summons with court date. I’m in Texas so my statute of limitations is 4 years.

Oh yea, I've received so many "last chance" emails, several nasty voicemails from Navient supervisors, they would send letters that looked like a birthday card or an Amazon package. They also contacted a few close friends from high school and my sister. They're assholes but just keep ignoring them at all costs unless it's a court summons.

Thank you! I will be on the look out for that if and when they come. That’s so wild that they would even do that.

Dude that’s fucking awesome, I’m really considering doing the same right now.

You should I tried paying these loans for way too long to not see the amount decrease just stay the same. I’m done and over with them.

It took me about 4 months after those same notices before getting a law firm collector to send me a notice. I sent my debt validation letter using AI and citing any applicable state law with federal. They replied right away with a mostly incomplete packet. I sent a second notice and before I received the same packet the firm filed a civil suit against me. I have retained a lawyer on a flat fee and that is where I am at now. I will post updates as I am able to. Good luck.
SLM is predatory and I still can’t believe I was told I didn’t make enough to be on an income based repayment plan a while back.

How long were you in default before they sued you?
Revolutionary-Scar71@reddit
About 6 months. From the slm “this is your last chance” calls until it hit a collector firm, they filed in 2 months. They didn’t wait until I received the packet from the second debt validation request to file the suit.

Wow! Keep us updated on if you’re able to settle with them. How much do you owe?
Revolutionary-Scar71@reddit
I just want to add as the time gets near for a possible civil suit start researching lawyers. All the “consumer law” attorneys pawned me off right away when they heard student loan even emphasizing private loan. Some of those referred never even returned my call or email.

Do you have assets? I’m just curious cause I really don’t have anything besides my truck.
Revolutionary-Scar71@reddit
No I do not. But a judgement could lead to garnishment of wages and I do pay child support and do not want to have another. Plus not sure if they can hit my bank account on a direct deposit payment.
