Yes, I have it. You obviously don't, because this isn't a dating or chat sub, and my post isn't an invitation for you to try to talk to and probably scam people.
fnordius@reddit
It wasn't just an American thing either. Toto Colugno's hit song "L'Italiano" has the line Con l′autoradio sempre nella mano destra as a sign of true Italian-ness (always carrying the car radio in the right hand).

I took a band saw and cut the faceplate off the stock stereo. Then, I would swap them out when I would park at the mall.

Haha, peak irony right here. Love it! 😆

Kids nowadays don’t know anything about car stereos
RawrRRitchie@reddit
People don't steal radios from cars
They steal catalytic converters
They practically race while they do it. Jack up the he cat, cut it own, and they're gone within 15 minutes
Happened at the store I work at, twice.
much_longer_username@reddit
Not anymore, maybe. But it was absolutely a thing - and you'd detach the faceplate with the controls and take it with you, because without that, the rest was useless.
Sensitive_Stock_2766@reddit
Yep, had mine stolen last year. They didn't even jack the car. Saw-zaw in broad daylight. Neighbors thought i was having "work done."

squeaker@reddit
Fifteen minutes? The guys who keep going for my car in my car are in and out in about 90 seconds.
Or at least they were until I got a bunch of rebar welded around it.
hangowood@reddit
Hell I’m noticing more and more of them refusing to get a driver’s license. That was the pass to freedom at one time.
iamsotiredofthiscrap@reddit
Hard to justify a $400 car payment plus $400 insurance when you make $7.50/hr
UnstableConstruction@reddit
Impossible, I'd say. But then my first car payment wasn't for 10 years after entering the workplace. Until then, I paid cash for the best crappy car I could find and had liability only insurance. Are there people out there expecting to finance a car when getting a fast food job?
mustardman73@reddit
That's how I financed my first used car, while living at home. Times have changed.
servireettueri@reddit
A family member was going to give me a reliable beater for free and liability only insurance for me is 600$ a month. I couldn't justify it. Im almost 30 and never caused an accident. Insurance is just crazy expensive.
UnstableConstruction@reddit
How the F is liability $600/month when you have no accidents? Mine is $650 with full coverage on two newer vehicles and I have two teen boys on my insurance. Yes, I know it's higher in other states, but I've live in high states fairly recently and it wasn't nearly that large a difference.
servireettueri@reddit
Never been insured before.
Darmok47@reddit
Even used cars are incredibly expensive.
StargazerNCC2893@reddit
I mean it doesn't mean you still can't get your license. Its still a rite of passage. You don't need your own car to be licensed to drive. I think its less about the cost and more about the responsibility. Kids are just more sheltered and protected. They don't crave the freedom we did because they have almost none their whole lives and they don't know anything different.
RustyDogma@reddit
Nothing is a rite of passage unless family or society pushes it on you. Most kids in places like NYC never get drivers licenses. We're all allowed to say no, that doesn't fit my life. I enjoy walking everywhere. Kids in my family aren't allowed to walk alone.
You're right they don't have freedom and are sheltered. But in my experience it has nothing to do with driving or craving freedom. Parents get arrested now if their kids walk alone. The fear level my friends have over their kids getting hurt or kidnapped is off the charts. It's bizarre. Kids are statistically safer but continuously are more restricted than ever.
StargazerNCC2893@reddit
Yes, a rite of passage is societal. I am not sure what you are arguing about regarding that. Sure in New York its possible to never drive. In many placed in the U.S. its essentially a requirement. What's your point? That there are exceptions, you act like I was claiming some 100% objective factual thing that is universal across all of human society.
> But in my experience it has nothing to do with driving or craving freedom.
You often get better at things in life with practice. If you are 10 years old and you are allowed to go ride your bike around the block without an adult watching you the first time may be scary, you are so used to an adult being there to protect you, but as time goes on your get used to it and begin to enjoy not having an adult watching over you. Eventually you expand beyond the block.
You will have to deal with real life situations, you will eventually be hanging out with your friends without adults and have to deal with interpersonal conflict and learn to resolve them.
Eventually over time as you get older and puberty hits you learn to deal with and understand the opposite sex. You will start socially awkward, but as you do it more you begin to get better at it.
Once you're 16 (and live in a place where you need a car to get around) you get your license now you can go with friends or dates to movies. In the case of New York, maybe taking the Subway is something similar. Your world begins to expand. Because you started simply riding your bike around the block at 10, now you have the desire for more freedom, and of course with that comes more responsibility.
If you never get this experience growing and now someone dumps all this on you at one time instead of you gradually learning this over your formative years I can totally see why kids/ young adults these days are afraid of freedom, because with it comes responsibility.
You seem to think I am blame the young people for this, I never did. Its the parents and societies fault. We over protect children to the point where their maturity (in some aspects) seems to be severely stunted.
J4pes@reddit
Just drive an old beater! My 87 Tercel was 1000$. 700/yr to insure.
servireettueri@reddit
I can get a free vehicle. But it's 600$ a MONTH to insure.
J4pes@reddit
That sucks
EarlGreyAllDay6969@reddit
$700 a year to insure for a 40+ year old driver, plus how much in repaired on that old beater?
Straight up cars, and nothing, are as cheap as they used to be and minimum wage has been stagnant in most places for nearing 20 years.
J4pes@reddit
I’m not quite X, elder Millennial. Repairs since I bought it? Maybe 300$ in parts beyond regular oil changes. Got it with 140k. Sat in a guy’s garage for a decade. Still only has 177k. These cars aren’t common, but they are out there.
Gutter_Snoop@reddit
So everyone should get themselves a car that's not common and/or hard to find?
See where maybe that could be slightly implausible?
J4pes@reddit
Do what you want, like I could give a fuck. Deals exist. Figure it out
Enough-Pickle-8542@reddit
It doesn’t matter if minimum wage is stagnant, nobody pays it.
xTechDeath@reddit
If nobody pays it why did the vote to raise minimum wage fail?
Hipcatjack@reddit
when we were kids a $20 bill would fill our tank up..AND WE WIULD GET CHANGE BACK.
i dont blame the kids for not wanting to drive now. a car isnt the freedom it was for us.
OlDirtyTriple@reddit
I needed to have a car so I could pick up all my friends so we could talk and hang out away from adults.
Social media does that now. We got in WAY more trouble too. Pregnancy, drugs, fights, cops, car crashes, teen drinking, and smoking. In hindsight we'd have laughed at "and smoking" as it was just so common and even at 16-17 years old totally accepted.
Big_Slope@reddit
Well, yeah, if you drove all the way out there to pick up your friends, you might as well get them pregnant.
We were more efficient than modern kids.
Soma2710@reddit
If your first vehicle was a minivan like myself, you could get even more friends pregnant.
iamthpecial@reddit
Minivans are so underrated funmobiles. I called mine (as an adult) the Swaggin’ Wagon, but my coworker first dubbed it the shag wag. I want another lol
leicanthrope@reddit
I had a Mercury Bobcat, essentially an upscale Pinto. I could have sex in it, in theory.
J4pes@reddit
Depends where you live I think. Rurally it’s pretty hard to get around if you can’t drive
poilk91@reddit
They've got the Internet and the outside world is expensive I think their missing out but can't really blame them
YoMTVcribs@reddit
Those don't exist anymore. Now your options are like a '18 Camry for 6k. It's prohibitive for people in entry-level jobs to be able to walk up and hand someone some cash you saved in a shoebox and get a car that runs for three years like we did as kids.
I had a 95 Civic that I got when I was 16 for $3000 and it lasted through college. That Camry is probably going to have transmission, starter, and gas pump issues in the first year.
J4pes@reddit
The Tercel is my current car and I bought it 3 years ago
Enough-Pickle-8542@reddit
Get real, fast food wages are $15/hr now. If a teenager works for less it’s because they insist on working somewhere kids willingly take less because it’s a fun place to work like a go kart track, skate park, etc
xTechDeath@reddit
Your other comment says nobody pays min wage, this comment you say it’s only paid by places because they are fun places to work (fuckin lol), flip flop flip flop
Which is it?
Enough-Pickle-8542@reddit
Correct. Nobody as in practically nobody. It’s kind of like saying “nobody has a flip phone anymore”. There are always special cases where people choose an alternative due to other reasoning.
The point is wages that are higher than the minimum are always readily available for entry level, anywhere in the USA
HolidayCards@reddit
Theres jobs at skate parks? Sounds like wack skate parks
Varmr@reddit
Boomer-ass take
gotbock@reddit
Nobody is making 7.50
iamsotiredofthiscrap@reddit
Alabama min wage is $7.25/hr

I understand that. No one is making that.
iamsotiredofthiscrap@reddit
15,000 workers in Alabama are paid minimum wage or below: report https://share.google/4cdxNSfMb4g0lgAbO
gotbock@reddit
That's about 1% of the workforce. Negligible. A rounding error.
Like I said, nobody is making that.
iamsotiredofthiscrap@reddit
It's not negligible to those 15000 people.
Shows your level of empathy, calling 15000 people nobody.
gotbock@reddit
Empathy has nothing to do with the context of the conversation, champ.
hangowood@reddit
Even harder to justify using ride share to go everywhere.
FlowSoSlow@reddit
Car payment???
tr1mble@reddit
Tell that to 20 year old me making 10$ an hour lol
some_cool_guy@reddit
What kind of tone deaf.. teens aren't financing new cars bro lol
bleu_waffl3s@reddit
Most jobs that teenagers would get pay at least $12 an hour. The grocery store best starts at $15 and a lifeguard at the water park is also 15-16. My car payment was about $400 but that was 5 years ago and for a brand new car.
CaptainHubble@reddit
I already payed 4000€ in 2017. I can fully understand anyone refusing to do this nowadays. Where it only got more expensive and difficult.
That being said... I couldn't live without a license.
plmbob@reddit
I have an 18yo and cannot believe how hard I have to work to make getting their license sound cool and useful. And we live in a very car-centric suburb. I had my test scheduled for the day I turned of age.
But on topic, I had one of the double-DIN removable faceplate stereos, so half the time I would take it off and just put it in the glove box. Or back a little further and we lugged around the whole deck
Skandronon@reddit
I didn't get my license until I was 30, 13 years ago.
SeaBanana4@reddit
Yes because it's stupid to essentially force everyone to drive to do everything. r/fuckcars
DoctorWaluigiTime@reddit
I mean I get it. I held off until I needed one. Savin' that sweet cash.
Even when I went to college I didn't take my car. Everything was on campus or nearby anyway.
Trismesjistus@reddit
The drive to get a car was because it was so much easier to get laid. If it hadn't been for that, I don't think I would have cared very much. Come to think of it, so many of my decisions in life have come down to that. That Freud guy may have been on to something
KingdomOfFawg@reddit
Seriously. Whenever I see someone rattling their spot welds loose, they are 43 years old minimum.
IONTOP@reddit
Mine rotated backwards so it looked like I took the faceplate off TYVM
TheProfessorPoon@reddit
I had one I loved called “El Kameleon” and parts of the screen rotated into the dash and it made it look like nothing was there. Just like yours though, it was still ultimately stolen.
My best security system was keeping a bunch of old McDonald’s bags and other assorted trash in the truck and just throwing it all over the dash (covering the stereo) and the side seat whenever I parked somewhere remotely sketchy.
I worked at Best Buy and had a really good system at one point and I was absolutely pissed when it was all stolen. Do people still do systems btw?
IONTOP@reddit
I haven't bought a box or subwoofer since 2002, which ironically is the year I signed a lease. Still bought hats though
Alarming_Safe3309@reddit
Same here and mine still got stolen
Old_Manner4779@reddit
Dude, I had to pull out the whole unit every time and walk around with it. Faceplates were next level.
LumpyBuy8447@reddit
Tbf manufacturers are making it harder and harder to swap shit out. I have a 2015 and wanted to hook my subs up. Since my current stereo has a screen and controls other things in my car, the cheapest replacement I could find was $1000 Dual, no thanks. They do make aftermarket wire harnesses where I could split off of the stock Bose system. I think that was around $500 for everything I needed, much more reasonable but never got around to fucking with it.
SydricVym@reddit
Kids today also don't know about losing your hubcaps and having to buy a new one from some guy out of the back of a pickup truck in the grocery store parking lot.

I have a friend who still uses one of these. Cars get stolen constantly in our city. Not hers lol. I don't know if it works or just confuses the teenagers looking for something to joyride in.
LogensTenthFinger@reddit
Back in the day these were easy to remove but they're so rare now that the institutional knowledge among criminals no longer exists, as hilarious as that sounds
Pain--In--The--Brain@reddit
100% this. Same with pickpockets. Nobody knows how to do it anymore so it doesn't happen. Why fuck with this when you know how to jack any Kia in the city (or whatever the standard crime is today)?
krombough@reddit
You are not European, I take it.
chillinathid@reddit
In the US, we don't have public spaces and that's why we don't have pickpockets.
Tim-Sylvester@reddit
According to Europeans on reddit it's more because in Europe if they get pickpocketed they're like "ah, well played, you scamp!" whereas if Americans get pickpocketed we're more likely to beat the soles off someone's shoes just to teach them a lesson.
HashBrownsOverEasy@reddit
European here, that’s total nonsense.
Tim-Sylvester@reddit
Prove it to me by beating the socks off a pickpocket.
burf@reddit
Given that people are getting shot in the face for knocking on someone’s door or turning around in their driveway, I’d be worried about more than just getting beaten up as a pickpocket
leffertsave@reddit
We still have the NYC subway. From what I understand, pickpocketing was big in mid century times, but went away due to the reasons stated earlier in the thread.
I think I’ve heard that pickpockets consider theirs a higher, more sophisticated art than garden-variety thievery.

I live in the Bay Area the club was the first thing I bought after I left the Subaru lot. The next day I saw a clip of Subarus getting stolen in the bay. Worth every penny.
greenroom628@reddit
i used to live and park on the street in a high car theft area. i had a high risk vehicle (a honda civic) but never got my car stolen. broken into, but never stolen.
i drove a stick. if you want a car that no one will steal, get a stick shift.
veranish@reddit
My 88 rx7 came with one, i dont have the key but i still put it on, cause, lmao why not. (It doesn't lock, you can just collapse and remove it)
chazysciota@reddit
May not get stolen, but in my experience that just means it will be destroyed. for ex, my wife's car had an aftermarket stereo that I put installed wrong, such that the nice mounting hardware wouldn't work. But I was so over it at that point, that I just put screws through the sides and basically just bolted the damn thing into the dash. A few months later, somebody decided to steal it but apparently didn't bring a screwdriver... so they just destroyed the whole interior.
Kade7596@reddit
Visual deterrents are often more effective than actual security systems. lol
Send_Me_Dachshunds@reddit
Anyone equipped to steal a car can easily remove one of these. All they do is to make the car next to yours look easier to steal instead.
There's far better security than a crook lock.
Jerkrollatex@reddit
It's mostly meth heads and kids stealing cars here. They aren't really prepared for anything that makes it even a tiny bit harder.
Straight-Traffic-929@reddit
If it's in the open they'll get it by towing. Thus, no point having any security whatsoever, right
LizM75@reddit
I had one after my Kia was almost stolen.
UnholyDemigod@reddit
When I was a kid my dad had one of these, but it was old so it was just faded red with no writing on it. There was a small sticker on the back window, saying "protected by the Club". Because I didn't know it referred to the lock, I thought my dad was in a gang that would get revenge on car robbers
LakeEarth@reddit
They are solid metal, so they would do some damage if used as an actual club.
BigBlueDane@reddit
When the whole "kia boys" thing was popping off my Hyundai was susceptible to the exploit that made them very steal-able. They offered one of these wheel locks for free until they had a fix. I said "nah im good"

The KIA Boys are still running around where I’m from so if you own a KIA these are pretty much mandatory.

My Eclipse head unit had a special security feature where if constant power was removed (stolen), then you had to insert your security CD to unlock it. The security CD could be any CD that you choose. Mine was Radiohead - OK Computer. And it did get stolen eventually. Actually I shouldn't even be saying this because what if the thief is here on reddit and finally knows what CD to try.
There was also a message with an 800 number to call, with the idea that the thief would call the number and Eclipse employees would try to gain info about who has the CD player and pass it on to the police.
I never saw it again and it was never recovered. Happened in Detroit. Can't have shit in Detroit, as you know.

In high school in the late late 90s there was this punk kid in my class that regularly stole those from cars in the parking lot. Mine got stolen one day. I confronted him, and beat the shit out of him and got mine back.
I got suspended for 10 days for beating that kid up who broke into my car and stole my stereo and getting it back. The school did nothing about his stealing.
This is why I hated high school.

Funny story regarding the removable face plate. One time my best friend and I were in his car doing our typical cruising and listening to music. We started arguing on what to play next. He got so frustrated he popped off the face plate off and tossed it in the back seat.
We sat in silence for a few minutes and then he said “well that was dumb there is no where for me to pull over” we then laughed about it until he could pull over and get the face plate.
It became a joke in our friend group anytime music disputes came up “Don’t make me throw this face plate!” Was said and the argument would become the 4 of us laughing.

Mine had a little catalog of animations you could set. My favorite was the swimming dolphins.

Still have the face plate to my Sony Xplod. Not the actual stereo though. No idea why I kept it

I once had to fly out to pickup my broken down car that was fixed by a local mechanic, and drive it the 7-hour drive home with my dad. Arrived to pick it up and realised I’d left the face plate back at home, so had a 7-hour drive home with the old man and zero radio or music.

I still have one of my old Pioneer face plates. It's a trophy to remind me of a more innocent time. Well... maybe not that innocent. I was kind of a hooligan

My roommate would remove her faceplate and then her car got broken into anyway (they stole the change they saw). I never removed my stereo, kept my windows cracked, and no one ever touched my ‘97 Chevy Cavalier 😂 Such a great car. Hubcaps zip-tied on. Smelled like mold. Always fogged up. Punched holes in the something-or-other so it would pass smog. We had a lot of adventures together 🥲

RealLars_vS@reddit
Neighbor had her car broken into last Sunday. They took the radio. Apparently it should still be the style.
aBeaSTWiTHiNMe@reddit
Looking back, that was pretty stupid. Sure the faceplate had value but the stereo removal tools were just two bent pieces of metal anyone could easily replicate. Taking the faceplate off just gave better access to remove the whole stereo deck.
I guess it wouldn't work without the faceplate, but you could probably order that for cheaper than a whole-ass deck. Maybe just steal a display model deck from a store and hope it fits.

I paid so much money for a head unit like that I could just pop off. My stereo still ended up getting stolen, and when the dude stole it he just sliced all the wires. Then no mechanics wanted to work on it because they needed to take the whole dashboard off. So I just never had a radio or cd player in that vehicle for the last 6 years I had it.
andante528@reddit
I knew someone whose dad stuck two or three razor blades behind the car stereo, after they got ripped off a few times (NYC in the '80s). At least once they came back to find blood all over the front seat, but the stereo stayed put.

Taking out the stereo just to carry it in your backpack, peak '90s paranoia right there!
cjmar41@reddit
I upgraded to this. I bought an 89 Trans Am in like 1999 that already had an aftermarket deck. It was an Alpine, where the whole goddamn thing pulled out and had a handle that swung out.
(I ended up going with the Pioneer that had the pretty advanced at the time teal dot matrix screen, I think the main animation was dolphins now that I think about it, like why?)

Hmmmph. Peasant... I had the Kenwood mask head unit that had the motorized faceplate that hid itself.
Had $1500 worth of car stereo gear in it that I definitely did not pay $1500 for it working at tow lots has its advantages
Infinity kappa separates up front powered by a Sony xplod 50x2 amp and two 15-in lanzar (rebranded cerwin Vega) subs in a bandpass box powered by an MTX 2150.
The car I had all this shit in was a 1983 Honda Accord hatchback that I paid $350 for. That sub box took up the entire hatchback storage area it was comedy

honestly the whole super loud stereo trend dying out is for the best. im all for a nice sounding stereo system, but it was never about it actually sounding good. it was about how loud it was and how far away people outside the car could hear it. my neighbor is like 40 and still has one and it's annoying.

My wife once had her car broken into, and the only things they stole were the spare change out of the change holder, the radio faceplate, and the Rand McNally road atlas. This despite having some much more valuable items in the back seat and trunk.
Replacing the faceplate by itself with a used one from eBay was going to be at least as expensive as getting a whole new stereo, so Crutchfield it was.

20 years ago i owned a beat-to-shit Tercel that i had put a decent deck in
left it on overnight in my building's parking lot -- came out in the morning to find:
- my rear window smashed
- the faceplate of my stereo gone
- the rest of the deck and my dash all around it scratched to absolute shit
- a screwdriver laying on the floor of the passenger side
so whoever broke in decided to pry the face of it off instead of pushing that little damn release button, likely destroying it in the process
petty criminals ain't smart, i tell ya

I probably still have a Stussy shirt or two floating around somewhere. Definitely have the same Clarion radio from those days with the detachable face AND the case it went in too.
