Looks like someone lost the Mandate of Heaven
Viator_Eagle@reddit
So, by any chance does this help cool the world down?
Kangas_Khan@reddit
We’d need something like Yellowstone erupting for long term cooling, this is short term, sadly
Fancy_Exchange_9821@reddit
Yes it actually does
Someonejusthereandth@reddit
Wildfire smoke too
Perhaps_A_Cat@reddit
Lol, no.
You have to look at the overall system of CO2E.
That's carbon equivalent emissions.
What that means is the damage done by various emissions that is equivalent to the same damage done by carbon emissions.
If you look at that number and only that number you will find it is only increasing.
That's despite all of these claims of green energy, helping because it turns out you're still using a shitload of energy and that has to come from somewhere. You aren't going to magic it out of the Sun. At least not to convert the power into your lawn mower or some crap.
Sure, the sun is infinite, but all the things that made the machine that harness the energy of the Sun and convert them into a different energy form. Definitely had their price tag on the environment.
And it's not going to get better because of javons paradox.
So what do we do?
Leave civilization and take the disabled with you and take care of them. What does that mean? That's not my business. I'm already doing it. Damn cell towers are everywhere.
-Germanicus-@reddit
Started off so strong.
Lophostropheus@reddit
I thought it made greenhouse gases worse?
againandagain22@reddit
A relatively tiny amount of GH gases compared to what we out out every day.
But a huge amount of sunlight-blocking particulate. It’ll be a very temporary measure, but it will have a tiny, if temporary, cooling effect.
Midnight2012@reddit
So what your telling me, that in addition to weather modification to control the weather, the libruhls also have control over our volcanoes for the same purpose?
God help us all
GennyGeo@reddit
Exactly. They temporarily accumulate and block sunlight. However this also generates a positive feedback loop whereby gases accumulate beneath and outcompete the cooling effect of the gases, leading to snowmelt.
Sorry I’m a geologist and speaking exclusively with regard to processes that take thousands of years to occur lol
AntiBoATX@reddit
Used to? Or still do. Because it feels like many systems are speeding up
Scottamemnon@reddit
The sulfur usually makes acid rain worse… but it is cooling as it blocks sunlight.
IpsumProlixus@reddit
Not really, if anything it makes things worse. Soot from coal plants, forest fires, or volcanoes are what’s important here. The dark particulates travel far and land on the white ice caps making them less reflective and melt faster which increases the warming of the oceans. The oceans store CO2 which then gets released as they warm up. More CO2 is released per 1C in ocean temp than pretty much all emissions since the start of the industrial revolution combined. The melting of permafrost and ice caps is truly what will trigger the runaway train effect leading to a doomsday scenario which we are heading toward full speed.

Sad... Can't hope Mother Nature would help fix the problems that we've been causing.
hallofgamer@reddit
How can this affect the so-called dead hand?
Gonna_do_this_again@reddit
I think the dead hand also has a radiation threshold it has to pass before triggering.
TotalRecallsABitch@reddit
Volcanos are exactly that.....
Gonna_do_this_again@reddit
Yes, that's what the threshold is for. Volcanoes aren't putting out nuclear weapon levels of radiation.
fezzam@reddit
But what if there’s a high concentration of uranium in the lava

I’m pretty sure the system sends a message to Moscow and if there’s no response then the system fires.
jm644303@reddit
The Dead hand also first has to be 'activated' out of sleep mode, if you will. At which point it actively checks for the triggers. If only something like US nuke enabled submarines moved into the region... Oh shit .....
RachelRegina@reddit
If that dead man's switch for firing nukes is still a thing and it's still triggered by seismic activity interpreted to be nuclear detonations on Russian soil, could they go ahead and turn that shit off for a while? That'd be greaaaaat
ClearwaterAB@reddit
If there is an Armageddon does that mean I can stay home from work?
l30@reddit
Only with a signed letter from your god.
shutupyourenotmydad@reddit
I am currently accepting followers for my new religion. Our primary tenant is that you must work from home so as to resist the temptations of greed and lust in the workplace.
I'm the God of the religion, but I don't really get involved. It's too much work, tbh. I don't even need offerings or anything. Maybe just buy a game during a Steam sale or something if you feel like it.

Russia doesn't do fracking because they still have a shit ton of conventional oil deposit.
Also taking a lot of technology to pull off, not even China is able to frack like the US can.
nostrademons@reddit
No, it’s because God is pissed off at Putin and the apocalypse is nigh.
TAHINAZ@reddit
I’m not sure if you’re joking or not, but it’s certainly beginning to look like end times.
AshCan10@reddit
Its funny because putin and the kremlin want to keep this as quiet as possible because theres a lot of religious superstitious people in russia who could definitely see this as god "punishing" putin, it would be a serious blow to his legitimacy, especially cause this thing very seriously damaged russias nuclear capabilities in the pacific towards china and usa. Lol litterally one of the worst acts of god that could have happened to putler lmao
majorpowell@reddit
More likely due to the recent 8.8 magnitude earthquake as the title suggests.

Striper_Cape@reddit
We're affecting the earth so much that we are changing tectonics. How remarkable.
Fancy_Exchange_9821@reddit
Expand on that lol?
MeowverloadLain@reddit
Ice melts, layers below get pushed up, other parts of the surface get pulled down, things begin to happen.
Fancy_Exchange_9821@reddit
Do you think this also happened during milankovich cycles before humans? Or is this caused only by humans?
MeowverloadLain@reddit
Sure it must have happened during natural cycles as well, but to my knowledge we've sped this up quite a bit. The consequences are not known yet, so we just gotta wait and see?
Fancy_Exchange_9821@reddit
I think the consequences of these geological transitions/periods are far longer than human lifespans so we’ll probably never know the full extent
Striper_Cape@reddit
No they typically take that long to happen, but we're changing things faster than they change naturally. That is the whole problem.
Appropriate_Ad_1429@reddit
I think the Earth has shifted on its axis by 30.5inches in the past 20 yrs. Between 1993 and 2010 researchers estimated 2,150 gigatons or 860 million Olympic sized swimming pools of groundwater were removed from deep beneath the earths surface. I suspect it is much more than that now. However the pumping of water mass in vast quantities has long been known to tilt the Earth. One of humans effect on the planet. Milankovich' cycles were timed every 41000 years there would be an ice age which was confirmed in 1976 iirc from cores taken from Antarctica and Greenland? but the changing of the seasons where the Northern hemisphere will have hotter summers and the Southern hemisphere will become cooler, I'm not sure if that gradual flip will occur faster due to the axis shift.

Beginning of the end!
totpot@reddit
There's a famous Thai fortune teller, Mor Plai, that accurately predicted the date of the Myanmar earthquake earlier this year - even predicting the collapse of buildings in Bangkok as a result of it. She predicted a string of volcanic eruptions starting at the end of July that would eventually threaten Japan with a tsunami, but that the tsunami would not be as bad as the 2011 one.

So is this something we should worry about?
DontWashIt@reddit
As of now. No, there have been a few events that have happened that are truly spectacular. But relatively low on our danger scale. Even with the 8.8 the tsunamis we're pretty tame in terms of damage.
Eyebrow raising, sure. But nothing to jump up and get ready for...just yet.
