How are 7/11 stores seen in your area?

What's the rep of them?
I know 7/11 is trying to improve their rep in the US. They're great in Japan but less so in the US.
I like 7/11 itself. The problem is, every 7/11 I've visited seems to attract the weirdest men. 7/11 feels kinda sketchy.
RedStatePurpleGuy@reddit
We don't have 7-11 here.
holymacaroley@reddit
They're fine. Like everything else in my area, it depends on where you are in town if it's sketchy, not the brand of gas station.
SiloueOfUlrin@reddit
As a teenager it was the go to place to go for snacks. As an adult I don't really live near any of them... a lotta konbinis kinda suck tbh.
Crylec@reddit
The place to make a snack run. My particular 7/11 is sketchy af and has a ton of homeless people. Sometimes I buy them water or a snack if I got the dough but man I am always on edge sometimes cuz of certain people there being nut cases.
hohner1@reddit
They're called convenience stores for a reason. They're convenient. As in some place someone can go to who does not have a car but does not mind walking around a block. Or something attached to a gas station. They can be slightly seedy but not to bad if well kept. Not the ideal place, just where you go if you are in a hurry.
Ok-Growth4613@reddit
If I want to see two crack heads fight over a dollar a 7-11 is like getting a front row seat!
Latter_Growth1185@reddit
I feel like they’re nice in my area. Clean, great selection of things, cheap. The workers tend to be odd, but there’s a language barrier
visitor987@reddit
There are no 7/11 where I live. I believe they are mostly a western chain.
Responsible-Fun4303@reddit
We don’t have them in our area (Minnesota) but I’ve heard of them lol. I always think of slurpees 😜
girthius_maximus@reddit
Filled with crack heads
CPeeps323@reddit
7/11 is still a convenience store attached to a gas station where I live. Unless they break away from the gas station model I can’t see them really changing their brand that much? They will never compete with a gas station like Bucees which we also have in my area.
country_bogan@reddit
In California, the majority of 7/11s are independet standalone stores.
Dangerous-Safe-4336@reddit
The one near us is also a gas station.
IHaveBoxerDogs@reddit
Interesting, I was born and raised in California, and can't think of one attached to a gas station (I'm sure they exist). Where I live now in the mid-Atlantic/Southeast, it's about 50/50.
Suppafly@reddit
Maybe you never looked around the back or side where the big lot with all the pumps were :)
wizardyourlifeforce@reddit
Most 7/11s I’ve seen on the east coast don’t have gas stations
TheJokersChild@reddit
Lived in NY for 9 years; can confirm.
RickyRagnarok@reddit
I don’t even compare them to Bucees because nothing about Bucees is convenient, which is kind of key in a convenience store.
CPeeps323@reddit
I was comparing them as a gas station to Bucees. But yeah Bucees is a nightmare as far as crowds. But they have good food options and even fresh cut fruit and veggies for snacks. And I will always stop at a Bucees to use the bathroom. There’s no way I’m taking my baby into 7/11 on the middle of nowhere and hoping for a clean restroom
Usual_Singer_4222@reddit
Finally getting some locally with gas here in California. One moved from one corner to another with more space. The new store layout is wide and easier for the clerks to monitor the store from the front.
Homey-Airport-Int@reddit
In cities, at least all the US cities I can think of, downtown always has detached 7/11s.
CPeeps323@reddit
Now that you say that you are right, we do have at least one 7/11 that is downtown and a stand alone store. But we have much better convenience stores, quick stop stores with better food and options so I go there when I’m downtown.
anneofgraygardens@reddit
tbh I don't think I have ever seen a 7/11 with a gas station. I've only seen them as independent stores. (Maybe? I don't really keep a conscious catalog of 7/11s.)
There was one just down the street from my childhood house for as long as I can remember that closed down a couple months ago. I was shocked. It was really sketchy though so in retrospect I guess it's more surprising that it was open for that long.
Help1Ted@reddit
That’s interesting! At least where I’ve lived in Florida it’s far more rare to see a stand alone convenience store Vs one with a gas station. I remember seeing convenience stores on their own in New Jersey when I was young and thinking how odd it was to me. I remember going to a Wawa and it didn’t have any gas attached to it. But then again you’re not getting out of your car to pump gas. And they had far more service stations from what I remember. Instead of the convenience stores they would have a local mechanic shop attached.
CPeeps323@reddit
I’m in Texas and the only 7/11s I can think of are all attached to gas stations. That’s why I said “where I live” because I wasn’t sure if that was regional or if they were all like that. Which sounds like they aren’t all gas stations!
eleven_paws@reddit
I’m in the Pacific Northwest. Here, it’s not unusual to see them with or without a gas station. Their reputation is similar either way, just another convenience store.
Intelligent_Ebb4887@reddit
I only know of 1 7/11 in my area that has a gas station. But overall, it's not as good as most gas station stores. I only go because it's only 4 blocks from my house, closest gas station is at least a mile.
Innuendo64_@reddit
Where I live, 7/11s are not seen at all
cafelaserlemons@reddit
Same. It's all Casey's and QuikTrip out here.
HarveyMushman72@reddit
I'd love to have Casey's here. When I pass through your state, I hit the first one I see for my pizza fix.
Meattyloaf@reddit
If you haven't tried it, the breakfast pizza is too damn good to be coming from a gas station.
Suppafly@reddit
If you have them add gravy to breakfast pizza it's even better.
Innuendo64_@reddit
I'd argue that Casey's is a pizza chain that also sells gas
Meattyloaf@reddit
I'd accept this explanation. Their branded Cream Soda is also fantastic.
HarveyMushman72@reddit
I have. It has no business being that good!
Gertrude_D@reddit
I am apparently a heretic, but I've never been impressed with their pizza.
_pamelab@reddit
I kill for a QuikTrip. They closed the one by my house and we haven’t had a 7/11 here in decades.
Suppafly@reddit
QuikTrip is so mid, I can't figure out if other places have nicer ones or if they are just not familiar with places like Casey's.
bkmerrim@reddit
They closed all the 7/11’s near where I grew up too but dayum those QTs are nice. I’m out in Utah now and I would love a QT 😭
_pamelab@reddit
The new ones are so nice. Our old one is a Circle K now and the floors are always filthy.
AGirlNamedRoni@reddit
There’s one in Granite City.
_pamelab@reddit
The one on Chouteau is closer to me.
Conchobair@reddit
and Kum & Go
Timoth_e@reddit
I was so disappointed to hear that all Kum & Go stores are being rebranded to Maverik
Gertrude_D@reddit
I know! Let's us have some fun!
galacticdude7@reddit
We got a couple near me here in Grand Rapids that were built fairly recently. They are still branded as Kum & Go, but they also just opened a Maverik station near here as well, so I'd image the Kum & Go's days are numbered here as well.
No-Conversation1940@reddit
My friends in southwest Missouri tell me the rebranded Maveriks are the worst gas station/convenience store they've ever been to.
This is a region that has Sinclair, Signal, Phillips 66...there's competition.
Innuendo64_@reddit
Same, plus Circle K.
There are 7/11 stores here, but for whatever reason they operate under their Speedway brand instead. Most of the Mobil stations here work with a locally owned company for the stores though
Suppafly@reddit
This, I can't even think of the last time I saw one, but I'm sure it was while I was traveling somewhere. I don't remember them being anything special. Honestly, Casey's is the only gas station where I might specifically stop for anything other than just getting gas and a soda.
Brave_Mess_3155@reddit
They have them up in the chicago area. They replaced all of the White Hen's wich were better. I miss White Hen.
Meattyloaf@reddit
Got any Speedways? They're now owned by 7/11, but 7/11 keep them branded as Speedway
Innuendo64_@reddit
Not anymore. There are some Marathon stations that removed the Speedway branding and nearly every Mobil in my area is a Kelley's, which is a local company
the-hound-abides@reddit
It’s Cumberland Farms where I live.
CrazyAstronomer2@reddit
Cumbies!
G00dSh0tJans0n@reddit
Very few around here too, maybe one or two per city
Remarkable_Inchworm@reddit
Most of them around here have closed.
JudgmentalRavenclaw@reddit
Kinda ghetto. But good for slurpees!
drunkenwildmage@reddit
Around here, they’re basically just Stop-N-Robs. Most of them are pretty dumpy and are constantly getting robbed. The one down the street from a friend of mine’s house got robbed twice in one day.
Danieljoe1@reddit
Dont have one in my area.....so they're not
skybarnum@reddit
7/11 is the only chain convenience store where I live, although we are starting to see come circle Ks starting to show up. The rest are just locally owned/named stores that may or may not have gas stations attached.
7/11 are the low end and really only frequented when the completion is busy or by drunks who want taquitos/hot dogs with more miles on them than Goodyear.
Educational_Impact93@reddit
I can get to about 5 of them or so in a ten minute drive.
I've seen good and bad 7/11s. Really dependent on the neighborhood you're in. I remember when I lived in Aurora CO and there was one 7/11 a couple miles away that was pretty nice, and another that I nicknamed the 187/11 because it was sketchy as hell.
Trialbyfuego@reddit
Depends on what area its in. Do you know why 7-11s are so cool in Japan? They're in good areas! And Japan doesn't have a lot of sketchy areas to begin with.
A 7-11 in a good part of a big city will be just like the ones in Japan, except maybe not quite so clean. A 7-11 in a really bad part of some poor town will probably be sketchy af.
imapieceofshite2@reddit
Idaho doesn't even have any that I'm aware of
augustwest30@reddit
I view them as the least appealing for prepared food. Their donuts and hot dogs are alright, but all of their other stuff is just prepackaged sandwiches (usually ruined with old mayo already slathered on and sitting for a few days) and microwaved crap made in a factory. There are a lot of them, though. Near me, they even have two stores across the street from each other for traffic going in each direction.
Bastilleinstructor@reddit
We have a few newer 7-11's around my area that arent too bad. While the QT near us is clean, its location often draws, uh, questionable characters. There are a few other convience stores around South Carolina. The sketchy ones are usually in sketchy areas. To me its just a place to get gas or grab a snack on a road trip. I dont put a lot of thought into it.
DavyDavisJr@reddit
If you are talking about a store attached to a gas station (instead of a gas station attached to a store), you haven't seen anything compared to a big Texas Buc-ees. Big, clean, lots of good food, and drink options.
DrywallAnchor@reddit
I can think of six off of the top of my head. The mainland has Speedway which is owned by 7-Eleven and typically has fuel.
DesertWanderlust@reddit
Constantly surrounded by the homeless. All reasonable people go to Circle K or QT.
Recent_Permit2653@reddit
Ehhh…middling but better than it used to be. They did a nationwide (not sure how international it was) renovation in their stores a long time ago, the ambiance is way better. The clerks are still kinda what they’ve always been…kinda meh, but not awful.
At least here in Texas, many have a Laredo Taco food outlet now. For gas station food, or gas station Mexican food…not bad. Gives me a reason to want to stop there.
But for living two hours from Dallas, Texas, where 7-eleven was founded, we didn’t have any until…early 2020s? Weird. I moved here in 2005, and basically didn’t have or go to a 7-eleven for close to 20 years.
notthegoatseguy@reddit
I kind of feel like 7/11 and convenience stores in general are particularly tough for middle income people in US urban areas.
For middle income people and above, they either have cars, live close to a grocery store where the same products are cheaper, or can afford delivery options
Convenience stores really only work in areas of extreme density where its actually easier to open up a small store with high prices (San Francisco, NYC), or in poverty where there isn't much else around such as the most impoverished urban neighborhoods or in the rural sticks where the IGA closed 20 years ago and nothing has replaced it.
7/11's parent company owns Speedway, which has been one of the dominant gas stations here for ages. There has been 7/11 propers at times, but most seem to have switched over to other branding. Some don't even have gas stations and just have the c-store format.
So yeah in Indianapolis, I don't get the point. Most people will have access to other stores to get stuff and have no reason to go to 7/11. And there are other gas stations that offer the more premium format like Wawa and Getgo.
Amarastargazer@reddit
I had no idea Wawa’s went that West. I knew they had some in FL now, but maybe you’ve had them for a while and I was just not aware.
Ol_Man_J@reddit
Well if I'm just getting a bottle of water, I generally don't want to go to the grocery store for it. Hence the 7-11
notthegoatseguy@reddit
In places like Japan, they're far more than just "grab a drink" stores. they serve a variety of fresh foods, fried chicken, a lot of grocery and drink options, you can top up your Suica (public transit) card, locals can pay their phone and utility bills. They're also often still 24/7, whereas many US 7/11s have started closing at least for a few hours post-covid.
Meowmeowmeow31@reddit
Where I live, 7-11 can’t compete with Wawa, Royal Farms, or independent corner stores.
Mikeupinhere@reddit
Did I just find a Delmarvian in the wild?
Scoundrels_n_Vermin@reddit
Wawa is PA, otiginally, but of course a staple in New Jersey and Delaware. Msy e MD, too. DE here; I pass 4 Wawa in the way to work, and i know theres a 5th a quarter mile from work, but i don't generally pass it.
Amarastargazer@reddit
Wawa was one of my cousin’s absolute musts when she and her mom came to visit from RI. She would normally get my aunt to cave at the first or second one they saw driving down.
Meowmeowmeow31@reddit
Yup!
Both_Painter_9186@reddit
Wawa has great coffee and pastries. Their deli sandwiches are legit good as well. I wish there were more of them.
DreamsAndSchemes@reddit
They used to be good, then they expanded south. Quality took a huge hit to logistics
bhoose19@reddit
30 years ago, this statement would have been correct. Wawa food is not good, any pizza or hoagie shop can make a sandwich that is 100x better than anything Wawa puts out.
The only reason to go there is they have clean bathrooms.
Scoundrels_n_Vermin@reddit
The thing is, Wawa is there and consistent. Nobody would argue it's the best. But, it's just open.
splittingxheadache@reddit
You get Wawa for a decent meal on the road while you get gas. It’s serviceable but not supposed to be like an actual sandwich shop.
wekilledbambi03@reddit
Now yes. But like 15+ years ago you went there for a good sandwich. I heard they don’t even slice the deli meats any more.
SpecialComplex5249@reddit
You also go to Wawa if you need to buy lunch at 6:30 am to eat later in the day. Little else is open/serving lunch food in the early morning.
Both_Painter_9186@reddit
This is blasphemous! You shut your gd mouth!
anclwar@reddit
No, this is honestly the correct take. Wawa has gone way downhill over the last decade+. There are very few items I'll get from them now because the menu and quality is very hit or miss these days.
Coffee and pastries are still good, but if the hot foods and hoagies are mediocre now.
PirateSteve85@reddit
They havent gone down as hard as Sheetz though. I use to love Sheetz, they are just awful now.
anclwar@reddit
Dang, that sucks. My husband really liked Sheetz, but it might be the novelty because we're rarely in Sheetz country. I do remember being impressed by their hot food menu, but of course having selection doesn't mean it's all good.
PirateSteve85@reddit
Really it just seems like they expanded their menu too much. Some things are ok like mac and cheese bites are still good, but overall have gone downhill.
MonsieurRuffles@reddit
Hard disagree - I’m in the Philly metro area and Wawa’s hoagie game has greatly declined. Unless I’m on the road and need something quick and passable, I’m not going to Wawa for the food.
bhoose19@reddit
Am I getting banished from the Delaware Valley now?
Livid-Supermarket249@reddit
Wawa's bathrooms are undersized and dirty in my experience. Sheetz all the way.
Cool-Bunch6645@reddit
It’s cheap, consistent, and all over the region if you are on the road so makes for a safe stop when you don’t want fast food
HurtsCauseItMatters@reddit
Sheetz > Wawa lol
This-Violinist-2037@reddit
100% this!
count_strahd_z@reddit
Sheetz is good, but Wawa is superior. And both leave 7-11 in the dust.
courtd93@reddit
I’m sorry dear, but wawa is a ghost of itself since it expanded into the other states. The Wawa we knew is gone
Meowmeowmeow31@reddit
Wawa was so good back when they still sliced the cheese and meat in-store, and they had the good rolls because they didn’t have to worry about getting them to Florida.
HurtsCauseItMatters@reddit
My husband is from central PA. I'd end up divorced if I didn't stand up for Sheetz at every given opportunity. A Wawa is opening here in TN and he is so ANGRY lol
TheJokersChild@reddit
Yeah, PA is ground zero for this battle: Sheetz, Wawa and now Rutter's.
Crafty-Structure-361@reddit
I raised my kids in SW PA. Im from Oklahoma and we are all here now. We all miss Sheetz terribly! 😪
tiger_guppy@reddit
It was amazing until they started introducing all the new foods. Quesadillas were an odd addition but still tasted ok. Burrito bowls were the beginning of the end though. I miss the days when you took a number and ordered at the counter with some guy writing your order down.
Meowmeowmeow31@reddit
They should’ve stuck to doing a smaller menu reliably well.
MarbleousMel@reddit
That explains why I don’t understand the hype. I’ve mostly been to Florida Wawas.
Momik@reddit
Well sure, but 7/11 taught Marty McFly how to shoot 😎
Imperator314@reddit
Well I didn't log onto Reddit expecting to be verbally assaulted, but hear we are
HurtsCauseItMatters@reddit
lolol
Level-History7@reddit
Man I wish we could get either out west.
MrJmbjmb@reddit
no lol
Firefly_Magic@reddit
When I visit Florida I love going to Wawa
Meowmeowmeow31@reddit
Wawa is a sad shadow of its former self, but it’s still so much better than 7-11. I love Sheetz too but they aren’t in my area.
CraftyClio@reddit
I was on vacation and stopped by my first Wäsche that place is crazy!
SollSister@reddit
How I miss Royal Farms fried chicken.
PirateSteve85@reddit
Im reading this while in Wawa waiting on my food.
steely_92@reddit
We have Wawa and Sheetz. We used to have Turkey Hill, but most of those are going out of business once a Wawa or Sheetz opens in the same town.
catsandcoconuts@reddit
yes, the dirtiest looking independent corner stores always have THE best subs.
hail_to_the_beef@reddit
I dunno, I’m in Maryland and 7-11 is always bumpin’
Amarastargazer@reddit
I’ve always lived in Wawa territory, but have now seen it divided since I moved and Sheetz is an option. Those two will always run the favorites. Then, I think the Turkey Hills would be third. 7-11 has always been considered pretty low bar for a convenience store everywhere I’ve lived. I’m sure it does not help that most of the ones I’ve seen seem pretty run down. I’ve been to nicer ones, but their lack of made to order food just pushes it below those that do, I think. I definitely hear more about Royal Farms over 7-11 since RF opened.
dasaigaijin@reddit
I live near a 7/11 in Japan.
Can confirm.
Super_Selection1522@reddit
I use my glasses
That_70s_chick@reddit
All the 7-11’s here turned into Speedways
SavannahInChicago@reddit
I would love for them to be more like in Japan and other Asian countries. Even in Thailand they had better food than in the US. If it was a place that I could quickly pick up a decent lunch I would do it.
machagogo@reddit
Mid-tier convenience store.
"Sketchy" depends on area, not the brand.
IHaveBoxerDogs@reddit
I grew up in Southern California, and if there was an AM/PM and a 7/11 across the street from one another, the 7/11 always had the sketchy guys outside. It seems like they just don't mind loiterers.
Darmok47@reddit
Its weird, you could put a 7/11 in the most upscale zip codes in America, and somehow they would still attract sketchy characters. Like a weirdo spawn point.
Mysterious-Simple805@reddit
Circle K seems more common here in Louisiana. Race Track has good donuts and a frozen yogurt bar.
Minute_Box3852@reddit
If that espresso machine is actually working, they're seen as elite compared to other convenience stores. If, like ours, it's always out of milk or just down, then it's the usual 7-11 where the crazies hang out.
And when I say espresso machine, I don't mean the watery sh1t ones all the convenience stores have with the variety of crazy flavors. I'm talking about the newer stores with the actual espresso beans at the top and touchscreen where you pick shots, latte, cappuccino and it grinds the beans, pulls the milk from a literal jug of 2 gallon milk to steam and the machine adds it then foams the top. And they have 7-8 different syrups, including sugar free to add. I'm able to make myself a latte very comparable to my Starbucks fave for $2.50
MulayamChaddi@reddit
Functional in CA, with the entrepreneurial high schoolers running side gigs to sell drugs to middle schoolers
Help1Ted@reddit
It’s a convenience store! Nothing more, and nothing less. We have lots of options here in Florida that would seem to be more regional to other areas. But IMO they are all about the same. Some have decent food options and others just have average convenience store options.
ABSOFRKINLUTELY@reddit
Average options for higher than average pricing.
Subject_Way7010@reddit
Quik Trip by contrast has the moto
“More than a gas station”.
FataMorganaForReal@reddit
I miss QT. Wawa sucks in comparison.
Inside-Run785@reddit
As a man who lives in Wisconsin, I’m annoyed by the fact that there’s “Quick Trip” and “Kwick Trip”.
Ms-Metal@reddit
Exactly. I've lived in four different states and each one had their regional neighborhood convenience stores of which there were a bunch. Often 2 or 3 chains, depending on how big the city is.
Help1Ted@reddit
Oh that’s interesting! I didn’t think Piggly Wiggly was that far north. Always thought it was more of a southern regional grocery store. They used to be in central Florida, then they left. But I’ll still see them in Alabama. We also have Tom Thumb in the panhandle. I’ve actually noticed a few chains that I thought closed all together are just not open in central Florida. But they might be open in northern Florida or bordering states.
thatrightwinger@reddit
Wawa, for instance?
Help1Ted@reddit
Lol! Yeah, Wawa has some good food. We have Buc-ees as well though.
thatrightwinger@reddit
Tennessee has a couple, too, and is working on a third.
Old_Promise2077@reddit
They are just products of their neighborhood. Some are great, some are sketchy, and some I roll my windows up and lock the doors if I stop there
kaleb2959@reddit
I don't know about weird men, but 7-Eleven's problem is that they never seemed to adapt to changing market conditions. 24-hour Walmart basically killed the demand for convenience stores charging a premium for basic items. Now 24-hour Walmart is mostly no longer a thing, but they still have pretty long hours and grocery stores have longer hours than they used to. Other convenience stores reinvented themselves a bit (QuickTrip hardly hardly counts as a store in any conventional sense anymore), but 7-Eleven seemed to just alter their inventory a bit and limps along now.
itzyabish@reddit
I have not a single 7/11 in about a 2 hour radius. We do have circle k’s and drive thru convenience stores in my state though 🫡
GreenIll3610@reddit
Usually a sketchy convenience store with a couple crackheads hanging out front.
RedSolez@reddit
7/11 is a place to get Slurpies late at night. Wawa is where you go for convenience items.
chibialoha@reddit
It's fine. Usually has fresher baked goods than the WaWas and RoFos around me. That's really the only special thing about it, it's a convenience store. The Rofos and WaWas win out in the food counter department. I like Slurpees I guess.
WORhMnGd@reddit
Suck ass. Same as generally all gas stations. I’ve been to Japan and the 7/11s there are SO much nicer. I wasn’t in any actual gas station 7/11s though, so I’m not sure if those still suck.
randomname5478@reddit
The non gas station ones I have been to in the states suck ass also.
And Now 7-11 is dragging the Speedway gas stations down with them also.
Rourensu@reddit
7/11s were very useful when I was living in Japan.
WORhMnGd@reddit
Yeah, I heard you can do taxes on the machines in there!
Emotional_Signal7883@reddit
Wawa is what U.S. 7-11 wishes it was.
That said, I have yet to visit Bucees.
FrznFenix2020@reddit
7/11 where I live was seen a a ghetto trash hole and they were. Now the rebranded to DK just to hide their shame for a little while longer.
The coolers don't work, neither do the ice manchine sorry soda fountains, the air condition is always broken, the clerks are below average intelligence and mostly ignorant and mean, and the prices arent actually on the shelf tags, just barcodes.
Maybe it's just this franchisee but they have always been bad in my state and I've traveled all over it.
Scoundrels_n_Vermin@reddit
I prefer Wawa coffee over the 7/11 coffee in Japan.
Scoundrels_n_Vermin@reddit
7/11, Born in Las Vegas, resonates desperation befitting that city.
klimekam@reddit
I love 7-11! I didn’t grow up with them so I always enjoy going in. They have the absolute BEST pizza.
morose4eva@reddit
If I ever want a Slurpee and a pack of smokes at even given hour of any day, they're open and ready to sell them to me. What more could a girl ask for?
Ms-Metal@reddit
I don't really understand the question. What kind of rapper are they supposed to have? They're just a convenience store, not much different than any other convenience store. They don't have a bad rep, they don't have a good rep, they just are. I guess when I think of 7-eleven, the biggest thing I think of is that there is one everywhere, so they're not only convenient in that you can run in and out, but they're convenient in that there are so many of them. But other than that I've never heard anything bad or good about them, they're no different than any other convenience store, and most areas have a regional convenience store that has many different branches.
heartzogood@reddit
In the NotthEast, it seems that they picked the sleaziest place to locate any 7/11. Usually has crack addicts or bums in them. Place smells of garbage prepared food. Honestly, they’re a place to be avoided.
Trinx_@reddit
Reliable places to be open most hours after Walgreens closes. I like popping in for hot chocolate in the winter. Might snag necessities. Nothing special.
ITrCool@reddit
They don’t exist in my area. There’s other chains that basically have the market cornered.
Casey’s, QT, and Murphy USA (Walmart’s brand).
Closest 7/11 to me is a couple hours away.
osteologation@reddit
Murphys here are all smaller than my bathroom.
country_bogan@reddit
Hype and novelty around/11? How is it perceived there? In California, they are just another convenience store. No hype or anything.
SnooPineapples280@reddit
It depends on what area of town one is in. The ones in the poorer areas have more “sketchy” activity than the ones in the nicer parts of where I live.
Yandoji@reddit
Can confirm, came to say exactly this, and also from Florida lol.
But if you're talking comparing 7-11's overall offerings to Japan, it's not great across the board. I wouldn't eat any prepared food from a 7-11 - just slushies, packaged snacks, bottled drinks, and maybe a coffee from the machine.
osteologation@reddit
their food is alright for convenience store fare. I am a sucker for hot dogs/brats.
Momik@reddit
Weird how some American companies are just better overseas, like McDonald’s
Rei_Romano420@reddit
You can order beer in McDonalds in many countries. Of course it’s better there than in the US.
Yandoji@reddit
Probably because a lot of the companies that have gone international are big enough to have a pretty solid chokehold on Americans (who are also trained to accept deteriorating quality due to terminal capitalism), but that same complacency doesn't fly when they're not on their home turf.
Momik@reddit
Could be! Another factor may be more stringent regulations on food quality and preparation.
Either way, we’re the guinea pigs 👍

I’m in an upper middle class area and have a 7-11 about a mile down the road - it’s decidedly meh.

The last time I saw a 7/11 was in the 90s, they just don't exist in my area
aucool786@reddit
We don't really have 7/11 where I'm from
danbyer@reddit
When I need a convenience store, I go to the most convenient store. If that’s happens to be a 7-11, that’s where I go. I can’t imagine it any other way 😂
sfdsquid@reddit
There are only 2 within a 20 mile radius of me and they're both dumps.
Vachic09@reddit
It's just a normal gas station that has slurpies and a quick snack. I wouldn't choose them for a bathroom if there were better options around, but I might get a taquito.

Narrow-Psychology909@reddit
7-11 is basically a corporate bodega, so yeah, it’s gonna attract some weird men. They don’t serve food the same way as a traditional bodega which tend to have more of a local market/restaurant feel which helps to deter most of the weirdos because it’s more community-oriented.
jellybeans_in_a_bag@reddit
They’re good not particularly better than most but I live in Texas so they’ll never be able to become the number one
Buga99poo27GotNo464@reddit
Love me a slurpee, grew up with 7/11, but it's not the same. Loved their sandwiches 10/15 years ago. They are being outcompeted. Their bathrooms are lacking in enough accomodations (if even available to public) and often dirty. The often foreign owners/staff often give the dirty eye that makes one feel uncomfortable to simply walk in. The gas prices are not all that competitive. I think the short and sweet from the US is there are better (and wh***r) places to go. I have nothing against them and stop regularly at certain clean locations while travelling for work. It annoys me so much city locations have closed, with no replacement.. but others have taken their idea to a new levels... big businuess here we go... I think if they had gotten rid of the porno mags (sooner?) and expanded their prototype with population needs they would be the King of US gas stations today. But they sold out to Japan, lost interest in US, and always had interest in foreign (arab?) owners?
I don't think it takes a PhD to figure out. And QuikCheck copies their slurpees for many years, where's that lawsuit??? They left the US and the US left them. The newer locations are better in rich suburburbs, but still its not an ideal experience.
Smurfiette@reddit
The 7/11 at State/Jackson in Chicago was nasty. Not surprised it closed.
petg16@reddit
We don’t have them… we have Quiktrip, HQ is here in Tulsa, OK, along with some other chains like Maverick, formerly Kum&Go, and Fiesta Mart. QT has a kitchen where you can order food but it’s all meh.
Reasonable-Company71@reddit
All of the Hawai'i 7-11's are owned by 7-11 Japan so they have a pretty good rep here. We have a lot of similar foods as well as a lot of local specialty foods (all of which are really good). A lot of tourists make it a "thing" to go visit 7-11 because it's so different than the ones on the continent apparently.
mjzim9022@reddit
I live near two of them. One is a standalone, and one is adjoined to a Mobile gas station. Both get sketchy characters sometimes, but the standalone one has way more options and services and is far better with hot food than the gas station one. Neither are super glamorous but with the big one you can kind of see how the place derived from Seven & i Holding stores in Japan, which are really fun convenience stores you can piece together a satisfying and interesting meal at.
Icy_Huckleberry_8049@reddit
they've been her for 65+ years and used to be everywhere. Till the 80's when they were bought by another company and they started closing some down.

Gertrude_D@reddit
We don't have them in our state anymore. When I was a kid, however, it was the closest convenience store, so we'd ride our bikes ther, get a slushie, maybe play a video game and hang out. When I see them, it's always nostalgic for me, but I haven't been in one in ages.

They are owned by Indians. The lights are green yellow no matter how new or updated the store is. Making every one of them look dingy and unsafe
SollSister@reddit
7/11 has gross tasting soda fountain drinks. This holds true throughout the US. Circle K and McDs taste the same all across America. I don’t like 7/11. They keep opening new ones here and I’ve no clue why.
davidmar7@reddit
In some areas here, very very bad. Like people living behind the 7-11 and it becoming a hangout for hard drugs and prostitution. In other areas here the 7-11 is much more upscale. And then anywhere in between. On average, overall, it is a very "blue collar" type place with lots of workers popping in to grab a soda and some food. And of course people stopping in to get gas, use the restroom, etc. Within 30 minutes of me there are probably at least a dozen 7-11 stores.
After 10pm or so the vibe changes at most of them. Daytime as above, but after this time it usually becomes a somewhat weirder place.
redditburner_5000@reddit
7/11 in America is completely different from 7/11 in other countries.
In the US, they're lower-tier. QT, Mobile, and Circle-K are sort of on the higher side. Sinclair and 7/11 are sort of on the lower side.
I was surprised to see how nice 7/11s were in other countries. Like...serious, respectable, and sometimes quite large stores that were very clean and well stocked.

We don’t have 7/11’s in my area, but when we travel to bigger cities we see them all the time.
At least the ones I’ve seen, they are in sketchy neighborhoods and tend to watch my back a bit more — especially if there are groups of guys hanging out front or the side of the building.
At 7/11’s, I’ve been asked for money to buy food, soda, cigarettes, and money to pay for a dialysis machine (?)
One time, a guy asked for money because he was hungry, ai I said he can come inside, pick out something to eat and drink and I’ll pay for it. Then he said, “Nah, I just need the cash”. Said sorry bro. No cash here. Damn guy just wanted to buy booze or drugs.

After living in Taiwan, which their 7-Elevens are inspired by the ones in Japan (but to be fair I've also visited ones in Japan), then coming back to the US, ours is still garbage in comparison for fresh food selection, even if you have to microwave it, and that goes for both Seattle and California.
Here in Idaho, Maverik beats them both, and Wawa or Sheetz in other states will make the US 7-Eleven cry ugly tears, but maybe make Taiwan/Japan a bit sad.

They’re trying here in NJ, but they have to compete with Wawa and QuickChek. We’ve had freestanding stores for years, but they’ve been trying to break into the gas station market for the past few years.
TheJokersChild@reddit
Having to staff the pumps is probably a big deterrent. Probably also why Sheetz hasn't jumped the bridge.
brizia@reddit
I think it’s because Wawa and QuickChek are know as gas stations with convenience stores here, but 7-11 have existed here for decades as stand alone convenience stores.
TheJokersChild@reddit
First Quick Chek I ever remember seeing had a pharmacy. The deli came later, and then they went full-on Sheetz with gas stations.
Bronco3512@reddit
The closest one is like 20 minutes away. They used to be around a lot more. we have convenience stores naturally, but still. I miss them. Really only ever got the slurpees from them as a kid, but still.
galacticdude7@reddit
We don't have 7/11 here in Grand Rapids, but we have Speedway which is owned by 7/11, so we can still get our Free Slurpees each July 11th.
But I have lived in a few places that do have 7/11 and the only thing that's really noticeable about the ones I've been to is that they are generally in urban areas and are not attached to Gas Stations, other than that they are pretty typical Convenience Stores with a bit more of a recognizable brand for their fountain and frozen drinks. Sure I would agree that they do feel a little sketchy, but a) I feel that more of a function of them being located in more urban areas and b) All Convenience Stores are a little sketchy to begin with

I’ve never been in a 7/11 I’d consider good. I’ve been in a couple I’d consider passable. Best 7/11 I’ve been in Id rate a 4 out of 10. Most are a 2.
Unlucky-Captain1431@reddit
Lackluster is how I would describe the one near me.
JustafanIV@reddit
It's the only gas station in my rural-ish town, and is open 24/7.
It's not considered anything great, but it is very much appreciated for being a place you can grab essentials in an emergency when everywhere else closes at 9pm.
I for instance will always think fondly on them for having a mop head in stock at 1am when a pump broke in my house.
TheJokersChild@reddit
Rare that you see a 7 Eleven with gas here, and not at all farther northeast.
TheJokersChild@reddit
Don't forget, 7 Eleven started here. It was purchased by a Japanese company a few years ago that's introducing some Japanese things to its US stores.
Some of the reactions you'll get depend on area. Here, for example, Wawa, Royal Farms and Sheetz firmly trounce 7 Eleven for food quality and quality of customers. And Sheetz has dine-in.
nonstopflux@reddit
Seattle area - if I had a choice of store around here, I’d go to a 7-11. Consistent drinks and snacks. Only downside is no crushed ice.

GreatestState@reddit
7-11 isn’t as big as people make it out to be. They aren’t everywhere. American convenience store chains seem to be more regionally-focused. I don’t think most people in the southern United States know what Wawa is, but few people in Chicago have ever seen a Buc-ee’s or a Weigel’s.
MonsieurRuffles@reddit
Wawa has more stores in Florida than Pennsylvania.
GreatestState@reddit
I think Florida has 7-11 too. Florida is said to be a different thing than the rest of what we consider “southern culture.” When I think of the “South” I think of thousands of square miles cow country. Florida is definitely an outlier. Floridians don’t deal with as much cow shit and the like. I’m a Tennessean and I’ve traveled across the Southland to say Florida sticks out as something different. It’s America’s penis, its own thing. The Land of Dixie seems to stop at the Florida/Georgia line.
MonsieurRuffles@reddit
Wawa is invading the South with its mid Atlantic midness. They have stores in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, and Virginia and are expanding into Tennessee and North Carolina.

BigDamBeavers@reddit
It's no ok. They run out of stuff like Big GULP cups pretty regularly. They have sketchy sales on stuff that's close to expiration dates. 7-11 use to be the flagship of convenience now they struggle to match up to gas stations in terms of cleanliness and product.
EcstasyCalculus@reddit
Shitty, dirty, overpriced, often has less than reputable people hanging out in front of the store. Slurpees during a hot summer are the only draw for me.

MangaMaven@reddit
7-11 started in my area and until relatively recently our stores were managed differently than the rest of the world. (Managerial disagreements between the people who started the company cost a split in management but not a split branding.) I like them. I can rely in their baked goods to actually be good. The employees are usually interesting characters that are fun to chat with. I don’t fear their bathrooms.

IvanStarokapustin@reddit
7-11 is gross compared to the Royal Farms and Wawa. You walk in and decide you want a fountain drink and the area looks like it was last washed in 1980. And they are a bit more expensive.
There are some shitty Wawa’s and a thousand places to get a better hoagie, but by and large I think they have some standards on cleanliness. If there was a 7-11 next to a Wawa I could never see going to 7-11.

Possible-Estimate748@reddit
I like 7-11 as a store. Pizza is pretty good for the price even. But yeah, the outside always has very sketchy people just hanging around. I wondered why that is. I mean they're clearly homeless, so they just don't have anywhere else to go?? Are convenience stores to homeless people like the clubs to them? Like their way of getting social interaction with the public but also the chance of getting food, smokes, booze, or money? They usually don't say anything to me when I walk by.
Firefly_Magic@reddit
Some in North Carolina are the most low quality stores ever. Run down, dirty, sketchy to enter, and drug deals on the front sidewalk. Tennessee has some and they are nice, clean, big, offering fresh food. Night and day between the two, weird.

7-eleven stores are dying out in my area because an already-popular regional chain is expanding like crazy and another regional chain is spreading into the area.
But even when 7-eleven was the only convenience store nearby, I was never all that impressed with it; it was a step up from the gas station and that’s it. If the stores in the states were half as cool as the ones in Asia, they’d dominate the market.

I don't think we have 7/11s. There are a lot of Speedway, BP, Shell, Suncoast, UDF... Casey's is starting to be more common and I can think of a few Pilot stations. Unless you're going to one of the giant ones along the interstate, a convenience store is pretty interchangeable for any other convenience store. It has far more to do with what part of town you're in than the stores name.

Dying. They can't compete with the mega gas stations that have everything
OrionX3@reddit
Can’t say I’ve ever seen one in Alabama. I went to one when I was in Texas and some of the hot food was pretty decent.
RickyRagnarok@reddit
Convenience stores of all types sell a lot of vices. Cigarettes, beer, lotto, energy drinks/pills, etc. That is going to attract “the weirdest men” as you said.
As far as how I rank them along side other local convenience chains they’re probably second tier. I’d rather go to a Wawa or a RaceTrac.
bunrakoo@reddit
This is Wawa country pal
SordoCrabs@reddit
7/11 opened new stores in Raleigh after being absent for a while (I've only lived in Raleigh for 4 years)
On opening week of the store nearest me, their Slurpee machines were down, and every time I've gone there, floors are sticky and lines are slow moving.
Karamist623@reddit
In the NE and I prefer Wawa.
hypo-osmotic@reddit
Can't verify its accuracy, but some third-party map I found shows that 7/11 basically doesn't exist in the northern Midwest.
I would say that the sketchiest chain convenience store around here is Marathon. And not even so much that I feel unsafe there or anything, they're just a little grimy and don't have as good of a retail selection
wormbreath@reddit
I’ve never been to a 7/11. Im not sure there even are 7/11s here.
Dalton387@reddit
Just a convenience store. Usually not run down, but nothing you’d think about twice.
There are several other gas stations in my region that are all consistently much higher tier.
I’ve never seen them particularly try to be a higher tier. Can’t say they aren’t. I just haven’t seen it.
SabrinaFaire@reddit
They don't have them here in Nebraska. Personally I prefer QT of the local options.
No-Profession422@reddit
Here, just another convenience store/gas station.
But in Thailand and Japan, they're pretty awesome. They are quite popular in Korea and S.E. Asia overall.
thowe93@reddit
It’s a trashy convenience store in my area. All of them are small and dirty.
BoomerishGenX@reddit
Kinda like Autozone, every parking spot has oil stains.
Usually at least one person out front begging or bumming cigarettes or cash.
Dirty, gummy sidewalk.
Only really useful for icees and lottery tickets.
peter303_@reddit
The street people hang around ours. They might get a sense of security from lights and activity all night.
Miserable_Smoke@reddit
They play very loud classical music around ours to keep loiterers away.
boomgoesthevegemite@reddit
The ones in my area are pretty new. We had them back in the 80’s and 90’s and they were bought out. They finally came back and they’re really nice and have lots of items. Coffees, snacks, huge drink selection, and overall just clean. I don’t have one close to my work or house so I don’t frequent them but if I’m near one and need to stop, I’ll go there.
7yearlurkernowposter@reddit
They keep closing and the joke is always that freestanding 7/11's are never in good areas.
There's only one left near me and it's par for the course, few homeless people hang out but mostly paying customers. Never really caused any problems that I am aware of.
Compare that to the others which burned down in civil unrest or were open drug dealing areas and you see why this only remains.
MeTieDoughtyWalker@reddit
The nearest 7-Eleven is 150 miles from where I live, so I always look at it as a novelty when I’m traveling.
tcrhs@reddit
We don’t have them where I live.
stroppo@reddit
They're pretty crummy in my neighborhood. The stores always look worn out/run down. The food selection is poor. The convenience store attached to the local gas station is much better.
cleanuprequired1970@reddit
They're a common convenience store / gas station in WA. No better or worse than any other convenience store. The fuel pricing can be all over the board however... I pass by several on my regular routes. One week, any given 7-11 by will have the cheapest gas in the neighborhood by a lot while others in different areas will be much higher... the next week it's like they've swapped places.. the cheap location is now more expensive and the other locations are now cheaper. They're just not consistent.
KeyserSoju@reddit
I don't think this is specific to 7/11, but pretty much any convenience store has homeless people hanging around outside. I think it's a combination of the homeless problems at large in big cities and the fact that people with cars can just drive to a grocery store and there's nothing really "convenient" about most convenience stores for most of America since we're such a car based society.
cohrt@reddit
There really aren’t any near me. Maybe a handful. Only ones I’ve been in are sketchy af.
Apocalyptic0n3@reddit
They exist here in metro Phoenix, but there isn't one near me and they aren't as common as they were in metro Detroit. In metro Phoenix, there's a Circle K on every corner (they're headquartered here) and 7/11 seems to struggle against them.
PearlsandScotch@reddit
It’s open later than the local convenience stores so that’s a plus. My local store has a lot of local dairy, eggs, etc. They carry things you often realize you need in a pinch but don’t want to go to the grocery store. Some 7/11 stores stock that and some are snack focused, not very consistent.
GrizznessOnly@reddit
They don't exist in my city anymore but used to. They've definitely fallen from being the most known or popular convenience stores in my opinion. Even though I think they're still number one is shear number of stores. I do often think they seem run-down when I do encounter one much like Circle Ks.
They've never really distinguished their brand outside of just being the Slurpee place. While the bigger convenience stores/gas stations like Bucees, Wawa, Love's, etc all have a lot more to offer.
SurpriseEcstatic1761@reddit
Very expensive, no real food
kjb76@reddit
We have two 7-11 stores near me. One is staffed by nice HS kids. The other one is shady and seems to be full of tweakers.
JBoy9028@reddit
Despite being the same company, the Speedways are far nicer than the one 7/11 in the area.
ALoungerAtTheClubs@reddit
There are some, but it's just a conveinence store with nothing special about it, unlike Buc-ee's or WaWa.
letschat66@reddit
It's just seen as a random gas station with a shop of overpriced essentials and snacks. It's not high quality or anything.
MongooseDog001@reddit
I'm I'm South Texas. Here 7-11's are called Stripes, and are a solid choice for a breakfast taco
cottoncandymandy@reddit
We have 7/11 stores, but every since On Cue came to my area, I don't go to them anymore. I like a bathroom I can piss in and not feel like I'm gonna catch something by just being in the bathroom. 7/11 is almost always dirty and trashed. They dont keep enough employees on at one time to have a nice, clean store because they're cheap. Customers are awful and they dont have enough manpower to constantly clean up behind grown adults who refuse to throw away their own trash like children. Then they have to deal with the children.
LateQuantity8009@reddit
7-Eleven, Inc.
shelwood46@reddit
I live in Eastern PA and go to NJ often and 7-11 is definitely bottom tier. Often free-standing (no gas). They put one in the new gas station near the entry to 80 near the Water Gap on the NJ side, and I stop there often to get gas and went into the 7-11 attached once, and was not impressed. I'd rather go to Wawa (going there later today) or QuickChek, or Turkey Hill, or Sheetz, or literally any no-name convenience store/deli, thanks.
CPolland12@reddit
Well 7-11 was founded in Dallas, and I live in the area, so they are literally everywhere. So just a fairly common corner store
country_bogan@reddit
That is how they are in California. I am confused about being saying that the hype around them has worn off. What hype?
Turbowookie79@reddit
Same in Colorado. They’re everywhere, for as long as I can remember.
TPSreportmkay@reddit
There's like 3 in the whole area of 2 million people. They're all clean newer locations that also sell gas. I think they're generally viewed positively. I think of them like any other gas station.
yozaner1324@reddit
They're just a regular convenience store. They're a bit sketchy, but less so than Plaid Pantry. I wish we had the 7/11s like Japan has—I went basically every day when I was in Tokyo.
Alternative-Tea-39@reddit
Nonexistent
HighFiveKoala@reddit
Where I live in Orange County, California they're either okay or sketchy. When they're "okay" it's because they have everything you need (drinks, snacks, and sometimes it's a gas station) but the prices tend to be higher than at a supermarket. When it's "sketchy" it's because there's shady people hanging around and/or in a bad area.
passisgullible@reddit
7/11 is just shitty. Whole place is gross, the only reason I ever go in is for their slushies.
karmapuhlease@reddit
In the NYC suburbs, they are absolutely ubiquitous. We have them spaced out roughly every 1 mile of driving.
constaleah@reddit
They're a common place and well known for robberies in the U.S.
Annhl8rX@reddit
I live in the Dallas area (where 7/11 was founded and is still headquartered), so they’re everywhere. Whether it’s in this area or anywhere else around the country, I’ve found that they vary wildly.
The one consistent among them seems to be that the bathrooms are ALWAYS atrocious.
I mainly stay away, and go to QuikTrip instead.
dotdedo@reddit
7/11 is kind of like that cousin that used to be cool who grew up to be a drug addict.
Pineapplebites100@reddit
The 7/11 store near my place seemed nice the few times I've be in it. They don't have to much competition around this area so it had good traffic.
NotDelnor@reddit
I don't think I've seen a 7/11 in over a decade.
EffectiveCycle@reddit
They bought out Speedway and are currently destroying them
Deep-Hovercraft6716@reddit
They used to be seen as dumps but I think the new system is working to a certain extent because a number of them have been refreshed recently and seem a lot less sketchy, mostly because they seem a lot less dirty and run down inside and out.
I don't know if the food is improving that much, but I know in general the gas station quality that I am observing across all brands has generally increased significantly, recently. A lot of the sketchiest gas stations have been torn down or replaced with newer brands.
the-year-is-2038@reddit
I have two nice ones not far from me. One is older but clean, the other is a much newer building and very nice. I remember sketchy ones when I was younger but they are doing good now.
ca77ywumpus@reddit
The only thing 7-11 has that other, independent stores don't is Slurpees. 7-11 is where you go to buy cigarettes, weird "supplements" and lottery tickets. Everything else can be purchased cheaper and better quality across the street at the actual supermarket.
Kyle81020@reddit
There aren’t any where I live, but several places I travel to frequently have them and they’re pretty decent.
daffodil0127@reddit
They are not really different from any other convenience store. There was one in my town for decades that closed a few years ago and they built medical office buildings in its place. It was nice to have something open all night.
Ky3031@reddit
I watched a guy get tased in a 7/11 parking lot once
Another guy tried to rob one with a bong and it was described “at bong point”
So there’s that
Express-Insect2684@reddit
We don’t have a 7/11 but we have a speedway (it’s one of the newer gas stations/truck stops in my area. It’s my go-to but I will say that the selection of everything there sucks- especially anything that is 7/11 brand. All trash.
I mostly go for cheaper gas and Red Bulls, but when I do venture out and try to find snacks, there’s hardly anything. And half the time their pumps are out, or their machines are down and they’re only accepting cash?
No weird encounters with people though, we have two other truck stops where I live and it’s by far the nicest and safest of the three options. I always feel like I’m gonna get kidnapped when I go to my local Love’s- but never feel that way when I go to other Love’s while traveling.
JakeScythe@reddit
I live in Denver and for some reason, almost every 7/11 is on Colfax Ave which has a…reputation. I don’t get why almost every single one is on Colfax but some are literally 4 blocks away from another one. I used to live next to one of them and I’d see wild and sketchy shit all the time. The one by me even had an active hostage situation a few years back. So, um not great rep.
extremefuzz777@reddit
I will say that most gas stations are improving themselves to compete with the newer ones. A lot are still run down and sketchy looking, but many of the others in my area have renovated for the better.
Ok-Ambassador8271@reddit

PvtDipwad@reddit
Hard not to find one in SoCal. They're great for some snacks and drinks. Some are attached to gas stations. Very neutral opinion of them honestly. I never get hot food there though lol
downtune79@reddit
There's no many of them in Atlanta....in fact, I dont think I know of one
cookorsew@reddit
It’s where you get gas and if your kid is with you maybe a slurpee. It’s not a daily stop or anything like that for most people. The only regularity is that you can get gas there.
azuth89@reddit
They're. ..around, I guess? Its just another cheap gas station.
The ones known for being nicer/cleaner in my area are QuickTrips in town and Buckee's between towns.
Artistic-Salary1738@reddit
The 711 here was much nicer when it was a franchise store. Now it’s corporate owned and seems a little grimy

I live in a metro area - 7/11s are around but they always look kind of dirty and I would only go in them if nothing else was open.
There was one in my more rural hometown growing up and we used it more as a convenience store that also had slurpees and big gulps.
Wafflebot17@reddit
We don’t even have them, too many local chains for them to compete. Casey’s dominates here

illegalsex@reddit
They don't exist here.
geminiloveca@reddit
The one local to my house is a little sketchy. It's small, hasn't been updated in years, and their fountain definitely has not been cleaned properly in a long time. It also used to get robbed on the regular.
I preferred AM/PM locally, but their parent company is BP and they've done some things I find distasteful, so I'm avoiding AM/PM and Arco.
Icy-Whale-2253@reddit
There are barely any in NYC because we have actual bodegas and delis but the closest one to me is near my job and it’s crackhead central.

They're everywhere. Most of them don't sell gas and are true corner stores.
The one I go to is fine. The second nearest one gets a lot more trouble. It's on a 24 hour bus line, and I wonder if that is one reason why.

ReporterHour6524@reddit
7-Eleven at home in America feels like any other gas station - kind of sketchy and full of interesting characters from all walks of life. Not somewhere I'd stay in for long after the sun sets though. I pick it over other gas stations because 7-Elevens will always have a microwave and be a place I can reliably buy cheap Arizona cans where other gas stations are kind of hit or miss. For road trips though I tend to prefer the gas stations with larger stores and more selection like Wawa, Sheetz, RaceTrac, QuikTrip, Cumberland Farms, Buc-ee's Love's or Pilot.
I've also been to many 7-Eleven stores in Japan as well as its main competitors, Lawson and Family Mart. World of difference in what these stores offer and how they're experienced.
ShadyJake75@reddit
We have a nice new one in my town, but most are pretty stale and outdated compared to Cumberland Farms.
FoxConsistent4406@reddit
Northern Virginia - more 7-11s than churches. For a while we had a 7-11 (no gas) next door to a different 7-11 (with gas). I can walk to three different ones from my house in under 30 minutes.

It's just another gas station. Nothing more, nothing less. The one in my town is less convenient for me than the Exxon, so I never go there.
WorldlinessRegular43@reddit
Central Valley California, we have one in my city and the store is dirty, there's folks standing around outside and laying on the side, the parking lot is in utter despair. It's just tacky all around. There's stabbings and shootings and drugs around it. The Papa Murphy's is there, and their door is broken, next to it is a smoke shop, and there's something else there that I've just never paid attention to it. The whole place is derelict.
Filberrt@reddit

My small town had two 7-11s, viewed as convenience stores. Closest place to get quick snacks/food/tobacco etc
The slurpees are solid. I really miss their old pizza rolls they made in 90s on the hot dog roller
Moved to a larger city off a popular boardwalk & lived right behind the 7-11. Was sketchy late night with all the homeless + really drunk/fd up people wandering around
Mid-tier is how it’s viewed

Here they’re often extremely sketchy. Definitely often known for having weird characters hanging around, often having a weird sour smell, usually festooned with "NO LOITERING" signs outside. Puukkot@reddit
There’ve been several new ones built here in my town, and they’re pretty nice for a convenience store. They have a hot food bar, the usual basic groceries and beverages etc. They also seem to have a low tolerance for sketchery, shenanigans and reindeer games, which makes it a little easier to consider stopping in for smokes or whatever.
DarthKnah@reddit
Crappy gas station is all it is to me

Mine always seems empty. I mean, it's decently clean and well stocked. I only ever see one employee, though. The most customers I have seen in there is maybe 5, but often I'm the only one who is in there. I don't visit that often, usually right before a road trip. Maybe 3-4 times a year. I know it's been there at least 29 years, possibly longer.
naldana95@reddit
7/11 is just another convenience store where I live. The one by my house is run of the mill—the vibes are pretty neutral. I’m partial to AMPM’s tho because gas is usually cheaper there and i like to get an horchata at the soda station. It seems like AMPM’s are the only convenience store with aguas frescas on tap
jtobin@reddit
7/11 was good in the US in the 1970s. Then, as their stores aged, others like Wawa and Sheetz changed the game with much larger footprints, much better food offerings. Wawa used to be pretty much the same as 7/11, maybe worse, but over time they sold off all their small locations and doubled down on the bigger locations. 7/11 is still stuck with a lot of those really old, small stores that just aren’t attractive for more than chips and a drink.
