Star Wars battlefront
zrock44@reddit
How? It's like literally the same game but with more stuff lol
TMCchristian@reddit
That's the point of the post though. Battlefront 2 '05 was pretty much better in every way, but I always liked the feeling of the '04 original better.
zrock44@reddit
Well I hate you then
TMCchristian@reddit
:(
Fuquin@reddit
I played Battlefront 2 (2005) before Battlefront (2004) and when I tried to play the first one I felt like a huge downgrade.
God, how I enjoyed Battlefront 2
JohnBGaming@reddit
Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3
zrock44@reddit
Yeah I love being able to only roll in set directions, what a good game.
I played through 1 once and will never play it again. Game is clunky as hell
JohnBGaming@reddit
To each their own, I think the fluidity and handholding of the newer games takes away from the difficulty of the Souls series, which was always the draw for me, so we're clearly just different types of gamers to market to and you're in the group they're moving towards.
zrock44@reddit
There's difficulty and then there's BS. Having the character respond not as you would expect them to is BS. A game with difficulty that gives you control over what you're doing is actual difficulty.
whiplashMYQ@reddit
Came looking for this. Ds3 is just better all around but ds1 has some magic in it
OneEnvironmental9222@reddit
as in dark souls 1 feels better to dark souls 3? Agree
or what do you mean
JohnBGaming@reddit
Yeah exactly what I mean. Technically DS3 is a better game, but there's no way I'd rather play it
OneEnvironmental9222@reddit
I genuine cant play DS3 again. I went throught it once and recently after almost a decade tried it and just cant. It feels like a slog.
Meanwhile I finished ds1 propably 10 times by now even with its "awful" secondhalf.
TheRoyalSniper@reddit
The only thing Dark Souls 1 has on 3 is the layout of the world. 3 feels infinitely better to play though and doesn't have the clunkiness 1 and 2 have
TheAskald@reddit
DS3 is mostly a straight line, and its identity relies too much on recycling DS1 characters and area instead of being its own thing
For me DS3 and its DLCs have the best music and my favourite bosses (even including Sekiro ER), but it's not hard to see why a lot of people will put DS1 above
pandainferno94@reddit
God of war >God of war: Ragnorak
LoquaciousEwok@reddit
I can’t imagine anyone would ever play just one without the other, but I agree that 2 despite being a technical improvement in every way just didn’t feel quite as satisfying to play
BTechUnited@reddit
The UI and menus are a massive step backwards for some reason, especially noticable on deck.

Portal
IILazarusLongII@reddit
I'd say portal 2 is way better than 1.
WalnutSizeBrain@reddit
Portal 2 is vastly superior to portal. It has better gameplay and, uniquely, can be played without having played the predecessor and still be a 10/10 experience
tiny360@reddit
Portal is like going off a jump on a motor bike and Portal 2 is like flooring it in a Tesla
Sage296@reddit
The only context you need for Portal 2 if you never played the first one is that you killed Glados
WalnutSizeBrain@reddit
Which you find out like 30 min into the game
DasFreibier@reddit
portal is probably the tightest game ever made
GLaDOS_Sympathizer@reddit
Agreed
jprogarn@reddit
For sure. There’s just something that makes the first Portal pretty much perfect.
johnskiddles@reddit
A 4-6 hour playtime keeps it from being perfect.
TraumaJeans@reddit
Can't think of anything besides nostalgia
chris_chan8426@reddit
tried too hard on giving it lore. probably personal take but wheatley was insufferable. puzzles went from being intuitive to being the easter eggy "find x" type (ceiling level and beyond were good tho)
quadtodfodder@reddit
Well there's that song fucking fantastic song.
" Daisy, give me your answer do. I’m half crazy all for the love of you. It won’t be a stylish marriage, I can’t afford a carriage. But you’ll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two."
Petes-meats@reddit
the first game very much had a lonely and isolated theme to it, there wasn't anyone else other than this robot talking through the test course
the second game was more cartoony and almost disney-like in its theme
johnskiddles@reddit
You are just too dumb to appreciate le heckin funny space ball.
ThirstyOutward@reddit
Portal is just a tech demo, bad take
WhtRbbt222@reddit
Narbacular Drop was the tech demo for Portal, actually.
https://www.digipen.edu/showcase/student-games/narbacular-drop
w00ms@reddit
F tier take Portal 2 is vastly superior in every way to Portal 1, the only thing Portal accomplishes better than Portal 2 is feeling more like a horror game than a puzzle game.

Totally agree. Portal is a perfect experience. Innovative, better paced, just the right length. Portal 2 is just a video game. Rehashing ideas, overwritten, less freedom in puzzle design, and different tone.

MyDogIsDaBest@reddit
People will say Halo, but I'll stand by that Halo 2 was better in every way than Halo 1. Both good, but Halo 2 improved a lot on the OG
McGuineaRI@reddit
Halo 2 is better than CE and 3. I recently played all of them again and I was shocked at how bad 3 was. I honestly had more fun with 4, ODST, and Reach.
I never even touched 5 and Infinite made me bored by the time I got to the second "boss".
Everything we love about Halo is missing now. No more hard hitting story about us overcoming an overwhelming enemy and a tremendous music score are all gone. 343 actively purged the Bungieness from Halo and it was all for the worse.
Fuck em.
MyDogIsDaBest@reddit
I won't argue about 2 being great, or with ODST and Reach being great games, but what did you not like about 3?
3's a phenomenal game and I still find the campaign sandbox to be fun to this day. It's possibly the easiest of the Halo games on Legendary, but I still really really like Halo 3.
4's story was still ok, even if the gameplay was a bit of a chore, it's at least better than 5.
343 has a massive hate boner for Bungie and it's really a shame, but I have a suspicion it's because the audience always says that 343's Halos are shit(which is true), while Bungie's were good and they hate that their games are so inferior.
McGuineaRI@reddit
The story was just a quick smash and grab that didn't have the epic feel of the first and second. It honestly felt like Return of the Jedi to Empire Strikes Back if you need a breadth and feel comparison. You hit a bunch of semi disjointed locations where you're just led by your nose, Cortana is missing mostly and she was a great person for the chief to play off of voice-wise so without her he has nothing to talk about and no one to talk to. Cortana coming up with things and unfolding wider conspiracies and explaining them to the chief (the audience) was a great story telling mechanic. I wish I was closer to when this happened so I could explain myself better but I hope I'm making sense here
Renegadeknight3@reddit
Reach > 4
Legoking@reddit
Reach should have been the last Halo game. 4, 5, and infinite have just brought the franchise down.
Orion7734@reddit
Halo 4 was excellent if you care about the lore beyond what you see in the story of the original trilogy
Aguacatedeaire__@reddit
Halo 4 lore was beyond retarded and broke the story
Orion7734@reddit
Everything in Halo 4 was already in the lore prior to 343's ownership of the franchise
SikeSky@reddit
Only because Frank O’Conner shoved his headcanon into 3 and hijacked the story under 343’s management. His Bungie-Era contributions are the only ones that contradict the rest of the original trilogy.
I_POO_ON_GOATS@reddit
Not even remotely controversial.
Reach gets a lot of flack for introducing sprint, but it's the last Halo game that actually felt like Halo
throwaway-anon-1600@reddit
If reach gave the halo franchise a black eye, halo 4 took it out back by the dumpster and shot it in the head.
mikillatja@reddit
Teach felt so good for no discernable reason.
Played 3 and 1 recently together with reach (did not have 2) and reach felt better. Idk what the consensus is because I never got halo 2
Kidmaker7@reddit
I would say the image applies to halo 2 vs halo 3 for me.
Judah_Earl@reddit
Halo 2 nerfed the shotgun.
johnskiddles@reddit
No bigger nerf than the pistol.
johnskiddles@reddit
Look, Halo CE had a better single player. You might have a problem with the library level, but it served a purpose. The slog in the middle of halo 2 didn't. Granted I played so much more halo2 because of multi-player.
BurnerNerd@reddit
Halo got progressively better until it peaked at reach. Nostalgia blinders may convince you 2 was better than 3 or 3 better than reach, but Halo really was the perfect example of a dev studio full of passionate and talented individuals with a common goal: keep making better games. Bunjoe accomplished that until they sold their soul to live service hell and went down in flames.
Arete34@reddit
The campaign in halo 2 sucked
Zpalq@reddit
Wtf?
EpicRussia@reddit
The ending of Halo 2's campaign was seen as a gigantic let down. "What are you doing on that shop? Sir, finishing this fight" - cut to credits. Players wanted to finish the campaign, not wait years and for a new console.
GigaPuddi@reddit
I'll never forgive Bungie for claiming it wasn't going to be a cliffhanger.
Arete34@reddit
Probably a generational thing. I hated playing as the arbiter.
STFUNeckbeard@reddit
The point is that Halo 2 might be improved in every way, but the first one still is more loved. And I totally agree. I’ve probably played more Halo 2 than Halo 1, but it’s impossible to live up to the experience of playing Halo 1 for the first time.
BrainyFlames@reddit

maracusdesu@reddit
I recently got the MCC and just got to Halo 2. It’s already ways better than 1
bendable_girder@reddit
2 > 1 > 3 for me
TWK128@reddit
Invert that and it's my ranking 3 >1>2
Earthworm-Kim@reddit
halo 1 looks way better, imo
sure, 2 has bump maps, but it isn't as visually cohesive compared to 1. it has so many ugly backdrops, messy maps and sharp edges
i think the armor illustrates it well. halo 1/mark v had better design and more interesting and colorful shaders compared to drab greens and bump mapped rubber. less is more
MyDogIsDaBest@reddit
Ok yeah I could get behind that. I think a lot of the goofiness of Halo 2's visuals is because they were originally planning to have stencil shadows, but they couldn't optimise enough to get stencil shadowing working at a playable framerate.
I think there's a video where some guy showed what the Halo 2 assets look like with stencil shadows and it makes a massive difference
WalnutSizeBrain@reddit
In terms of plot, reach > 3
TacticalSpackle@reddit
Dual-wielding, bump-mapped graphics, the writing and story… Halo 2 was such a gnarly upgrade. Too bad the programming and engine is some of the most overboiled spaghetti code it’s still talked about it some 20 years later.
lysis_@reddit
I think you can argue 3 > 1 but 2 was probably slightly worse. The dual wielding was kind of half baked
iSWINE@reddit
Which is unfortunately the biggest problem with dual wielding, you either make the weapon shit to balance having 2 of them, or make them so powerful that there's no need to not dual wield
Nowadays people would say " just half the damage when you hold 2 guns and return the value once they're dropped" but things get weird when you mix and match; especially 20 years ago
istandleet@reddit
You are so fucking wrong. Lockout is the best map ever created in any FPS. Bungie seemed to entirely miss the crouch-jump mechanic when designing the multiplayer experience, so the maps feel more like Super Mario 64 while the later maps (and every halo 3 map) are so fucking /designed/. "Dual wielding is half baked" is the opinion of a child who has only ever played the campaign, and it's bad even then. BXB and BXL (to sticky people) were GOATed mechanics which allowed you to run multiplayer games with zero shots fired.
DeadlyPear@reddit
the whole game was pretty half-baked, they rushed that shit out lol.

Plants vs Zombies
eamontothat@reddit
The second one just felt….soulless
Original-Document-82@reddit
I disagree, every fault of pvz2 was a result of some micro transaction implementation or the fact that it's a mobile game not a PC game. The level design, the plants, and the overall style of the game is so full of care from the developers that the game is their baby. At least until after they stopped adding new worlds which I assume is because the entire company got laid off, leading to the game being as shit as it is now. Not a single new world since 2017, probably because whatever they could make would be so devoid of any artistic integrity the game originally had. If you play it in the form of any of the dozens of community mods that have existed since then, you realize the game was just held back by profitability. There's even a PC version of it as a reimaging if it was made for PC instead of mobile
Maximum_Contest_5985@reddit
I'm gonna be honest, for all of its flaws I still like PvZ 2. Primal plants are my GOAT, and the fact they actually implemented Explode-o-nut from the Wall-nut Bowling minigame is amazing.
Original-Document-82@reddit
primal potato mine is sin to game design though, it shouldn't have ever been made in the form that it exists, blatantly power creeped and overpowered unit.
Maximum_Contest_5985@reddit
I agree that its stats are way too busted, it should take longer to arm rather than shorter. That being said, however, on paper I really like the concept.

Half life 2
TheBullGat0r@reddit
hard disagree as someone who's played through hl1 twice there are so many incredibly dated elements that take away a lot for me (excessive platforming, underdeveloped xen, etc). HL2 holds up 21 years later in basically every way to me
TraumaJeans@reddit
If you consider Black Mesa to be the 1 remaster, it's not as obvious
TheBullGat0r@reddit
oh Black Mesa is positively fantastic and definitely surpasses any other half life property imo. HL 1s story is the cleanest of the series and having it remastered is basically the perfect game
GrungeLord@reddit
I dunno, I played them both for the first time last year (Black Mesa, then HL2), having never touched a HL game, and I definitely preferred the sequel. I wasn't expecting it to hold up as well as it did, but it really blew me away. I get why it's such a lawded game.
ProbablyAutomated@reddit
Yeah, Black Mesa is perhaps the prettiest-looking game ever to be powered by Source1, but thanks to its 15 years or so of community development, it's also quite a bit longer than HL1, which can be both good and bad. Sequences that didn't overstay their welcome in HL definitely do in BM.
Nowhere near as bad as the in-development Blue Shift remake, though. For reference, the original Blue Shift was one of three Gearbox-developed expansion packs for HL1 and by far the shortest, you could finish Barney's Black Mesa adventure in three hours or so. The remake, developed as a mod for Black Mesa, goes on forever, and the final act isn't even released yet.
Dark_Pestilence@reddit
Waow you played it twice... lmao
MemeEditsReturns@reddit
Ikr
I've played HL1 at least 50 times start to finish over the years, and that's a very conservative estimate.
I've played HL2 and its episodes start to finish maybe twice.
Thezza-D@reddit
Yeah, sorry, you're just wrong. HL2 is a masterpiece and broke so much ground for game physics and puzzle/environment level design. It is STILL an amazing game to play. HL1 feels dated and clunky in comparison. It also looks like shit compared to 2.
ACriticalGeek@reddit
Did you not read the premise of this post?
Thezza-D@reddit
I did. I disagree completely with the above commenter's suggestion.
mayo_ham_bread@reddit
I don't think you're sorry at all
johnskiddles@reddit
Only if you really like horizontal elevators.
genericaddress@reddit
It was more fun to fight the HECU Marines than the Combine Overwatch soldiers. And I miss the Assassins, Houndeyes, and Bullsquids. I also loved weapons like the Gluon Gun, Tau Cannon, and even the Hivehand. HL1 was also the first game I played where friendly NPCs would react and fight back if I harmed them, which blew my mind at the time and I appreciated that freedom.
But HL2 improved so much, so I see them as equals. Depending on my mood, prefer one sometimes and other times prefer the other.
Tasky_420_69@reddit
Yeah, HL2 is worse than HL1.
Ignore these annoying little fanboys.
HL2 is a glorified tech demo that lacks the punch, pacing, and plethora of gameplay that HL1 had going for it.
The voice acting is annoying. The level design is irritating. The Gravity Gun is a crutch. The bosses are lame AF. The cutscenes are just downright bad.
HL2 is a step down from HL1, despite having a lot of improvements to the graphical fidelity and physics simulation.
It's not like HL2 is such a bad game by itself. It's just such a boring sequel to HL1.
MemeEditsReturns@reddit
This guy gets it.
thefierybreeze@reddit
HL1 is soul, HL2 feels like a demo reel
the_stormapproaching@reddit
Half-Life 1 is better than Half-Life 2 and I will die on this hill (I played both in the last few years, no nostalgia bias)
NegevMaster@reddit
Idk if I'd say HL1 is as a whole better than HL1, but there's definitely more memorable parts in HL1. (Blast Pit & Residue Processing are still my favorite levels in both games).
rycerzDog@reddit
I stand with you. Half-life 2 is boring and at times feels like a tech demo of the source engine. Half-life 1 had more weapons, a better "story", better enemy variety and just a better atmosphere in general.
WidowmakerFeet@reddit
all sequels are inherently soulless

Doom 2016 > Doom Eternal
carrot-parent@reddit
2016 was ass. Tried for years to get into it and actively avoided Eternal cuz I thought it’d be the same. Came to find out Eternal was a masterpiece, and 2016 really just sucked.
Snoo_46397@reddit
Pple wanting 2016 2.0 can easily just play Eternal on easy difficulty to be allowed to just mindlessly use SSG without any repercussions
proterraria@reddit
I am sorry but you are wrong king
Ap0logize@reddit
Nah man he right. I went through 2016 on one weekend, is was a hell of a ride, insane fun. I struggle with playing more than one mission per day in eternal, the last days I couldn't even do that, think I'm going to drop it altogether. It just worse, but can't exactly pinpoint why
TraumaJeans@reddit
It's a different game. Different vibe. It's as if the game doesn't know what it wants to be.
prince of persia style acrobatics
being forced to use specific weapons against specific enemies
Krunkbuster@reddit
If you turn the difficulty down you don’t have to switch your weapons as much. It’s a hard game.
Snoo_46397@reddit
Only 2 enemies in the entire roster and they are in the DLC
slayerx1779@reddit
My main beef with 2016 was the complexity creep: I like Doom when it's just you, a handful of guns, a pile of ammo, all against different combinations of enemies and room layouts to reward different strategies and weapon use.
It felt like Eternal took the added complexity that I wasn't a fan of, but tolerated, multiplied it, and made it way more important to the game's balancing.
gyropyro32@reddit
Nothing wrong with this
Screlingo@reddit
this.
theMB2dude@reddit
Exactly how I felt. I played the shit out of 2016, got all single player achievements, then bought eternal on release. Dropped it like 8 missions in, 2016 just had more soul and a cooler story.
Clen23@reddit
personal opinions tbh, Eternal isn't a direct upgrade from 2016 and took a different direction in several aspects.
For instance I'm a big fan of the hyperactive gameplay, but I like 2016's immersion better, while Eternal made the choice of having lots of non-diegetic elements like those retro-style heals.
Flashlight_Inspector@reddit
Doom Eternal shot itself in the foot by scaling absolutely everything around the idea of rapidly switching your weapons by making all but two weapons feel like actual dogshit to use. When you fire a gun in 2016 it sounds like you just sawed a burglar in half IRL and fires long enough that you can spray down an entire room. These two things combined makes it feel like you actually just gunned down a room full of demons, which is fucking awesome
When you fire a gun in Eternal it sounds like you just fired an airsoft gun at a pillow and everything has so little ammo that you'll run out of ammo almost as soon as the first bullets reach the enemy. These two things combined makes it feel like you're playing airsoft in an abandoned car wash, which is fucking lame
proterraria@reddit
Idk actually using all of your wepins instead of just walking around with the super shotgun seems way more fun to me actually disarming the demons with unique interactions feels way better
Idk what you go on about the rip and tear thing its said like twice in the entire game like what
Flashlight_Inspector@reddit
Two times too many, it was fucking embarrassing and felt like I was reading edgy fanfiction.
proterraria@reddit
????? You are playing a game about a jacked guy that is fighting mechanised demon zombies that is so mad he cant die to the point hell itself is scared of him and him being told rip and tear once is what made you cringe?
Flashlight_Inspector@reddit
Yeah and that's called show not tell. I don't need the game to tell me exactly what I'm doing in the most self-masturbatory way imaginable. Might as well play a puzzle game that pauses itself halfway through it to tell you how smart and witty you are
NachoNutritious@reddit
Combine this with how 2016 was balanced around using glory kills to regen health and the chainsaw to replenish ammo, it all added to the feel that you were never truly down and out no matter how low your health/ammo was and that you'd be rewarded by playing aggressively.
Ap0logize@reddit
That's one of my points I guess. You are out of ammo all the time, and everything only has one weakness, other weapons feel like nerf guns.
Like, if you said to me while playing 2016 that the cacodemon will get insanely tanky and only really die if you use that nade in mouth move, i would have laughed.
In 2016 using the chainsaw for ammo was a last resort or you used it to skip an extremely annoying enemy. Now you are forced to use it every 30 sec while it constantly reminds you that you dont have enough fuel to slice something thats not cannon fodder
willis12@reddit
You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. And Im not sorry

Yeah I’d agree with that. I really enjoyed both games, but despite DH2 seeming to be a direct improvement in pretty much all aspects, DH1 still feels better.
Maybe it’s a nostalgia thing?
Always_Impressive@reddit
Movement. Dh2 feels heavy and unresponsive somehow, even at high fps. Dh1 is also razor focused game that feels more personal. Dh2 just feels so forced as the story goes.
faredelisi@reddit
Finally someone other than me says this. Dh2 movement feels like im trying to move a robot on low battery and Dh1 movement was sliding a hot knife through butter. Only reason I couldn’t replay dh2 like dh1
Weepinbellend01@reddit
I wouldn’t even say dishonored 2 felt BAD. Dishonored 1 felt SO slick though. One of the most smooth feeling games I’ve ever played.
GardenerSpyTailorAss@reddit
I loved the first one and ya, it was great for how fluid the movement was. Some of the yt clips I've seen of ppl doing it better than I ever could (did they use a TAS assist?) was amazing.
LetComprehensive4600@reddit
No dark atmosphere - no rats (wasps are just triggering and annoying), no filth, no melancholic sightseeings, The Outsider with a femboy voice of a popular actor because of devs greed for hype - thus no charisma, no immersion - main character won't shut up and speaks out loud everything to lead casuals hand like in any shitty AAA game, weak pulled out of the ass plot with no actual explanation, long awaited ability to skip boat intros only to make unstoppable long dream sequences of lore where you can't even afk and have to walk forward in EVERY walkthrough which is idiotic considering the game is built for replayability, no feeling of being lost in a cruel world - you almost immediately get your OP powers back, no feeling of threat and go on a bored rampage because there's no plague and high chaos doesn't affect shit other than bohoo in the end MC is shown as more strict towards criminals (lol), main enemy can kill MC's relative we go the whole game to save to at any moment but decides not to without any motivation, not even plot armor. That's just a few reasons off the top of my head.

hobbinater2@reddit
On a mechanical end, Emily’s traversal power is less smooth than blink and corvos blink is nerfed by them removing the half second time dilation after a teleport.
Also the art style changed a great deal and the world has less atmosphere and things to discover.
To its credit, dishonored 2 has two of the most interesting levels I’ve ever played, the clockwork mansion and the timeline shift.
RandomCleverName@reddit
It's crazy, but I think those 2 levels were so good that it makes the other amazing levels of the game look worse by comparison.
El-Jalapeno@reddit
DH2 just has a mid story. Thats really it. Its a technically superior game but falls short on pulling the player deeper into the story.
Maxik22@reddit
I rolled my eyes getting into D2 after playing through D1's DLCs when I saw we were getting Delilah as a vilain AGAIN
throwaway_random0@reddit
Perfect example, i never understood why it's liked less than the original, i feel like it's just a straight up improvement in every single way. Though admittedly the story makes more sense if you play as emily instead of corvo

KOTOR 2. Mechanically superior, story has more depth, better writing, more interesting quests, but... the magic of KOTOR I wasn't quite there. It was grim and bleak.
Jack-of-Hearts-7@reddit
Better writing is stretching it.
Merciudel@reddit
I wouldn't say this really meets the OP criteria. KotOR 1 was an experiment and didn't take itself seriously, which lent itself to a more upbeat classic Star Wars feel and characters like HK47 and Jolee Bindo. It was more polished and complete because it wasn't a rushed sequel to a success. KotOR 2 offered a more complex and morally gray narrative, generally more compelling characters, but also significant development issues because they rushed it out. I think both have clearcut advantages over the other.
Chadzuma@reddit
Yeah in fact it's almost precisely the opposite. Kotor 2 has less polish but dramatically more substance.
FrancisGalloway@reddit
Reasonable, KOTOR 2 was indeed rushed. But even the completed portions felt hollow compared to 1. The galaxy felt emptier and darker.
the_stormapproaching@reddit
KOTOR 2 is brilliant and what makes the KOTOR era and characters the most interesting in Star Wars to this day, but KOTOR 1's atmosphere is definitely far more Star Wars (it also has Bastila Shan, whom is a baddie)

This is probably my hottest gaming take, but I agree with you. I really love Infinite for the gameplay, the aesthetic, and even its somewhat tenuous story. Bioshock 1 has a better narrative and an amazing setting, but the gameplay elements just let it down so much for me. The second game sits somewhere in between on both metrics.

The magic was just gone a little bit since they were pretty similar. BoTW was just so mindblowing when you first play it, such a departure from all other LoZ games, but then ToTK is basically the same but with more stuff to do.
McAkkeezz@reddit
Exploring the world in BotW was amazing. You see something funny in the horizon and then go there. Imho there was too much fast travel but wahtever.
TotK is ok, it is kinda exciting to see how the world has changed since botw but its just not the same
JWBails@reddit
I never understand this take. Just...don't fast travel?
Movement in the first Spider-Man was so fun that I only used fast travel enough times to get the achievement for it.
WheresTotoro@reddit
If the game is built around using fast travel, then the developers might not design regular movement to be engaging for travelling long distances. So it feels boring and stale.
McAkkeezz@reddit
The movement in BoTW and ToTK is not as stimulating as spiderman. As there are 135 fast travel locations in the game, most will just fast travel to the closest one. There is definietly a balance there somewhere, but given the opportunity people will optimice the fun out of the game
richtofin819@reddit
I like to say that while the building system is impressive as hell it doesn't add to the botw style gameplay it is separate from it. It's like 2 separate games in 1 package.
Where botw makes you look at the environment and strategize how to overcome it. Totk just says "I'll go underneath it" or "I'll just use another rocket glider and be up there in a second"
It's an example of too much. Like how in dying light 2 you don't just get a glider you get one you can basically fly with almost indefinitely. And despite how on paper it seems like an improvement it pretty much overpowers and invalidated a lot of the parkour that made the game special and such a hit in the first place.
Also they really did not give us many sky islands. I was so excited to explore the sky only to realize that the tutorial area was by far the biggest.
WheresTotoro@reddit
ToTK was so disappointing because it wasn't just "Same engine but new game" like MM was to OoT. It just felt like the SAME game. The plot is a rehash, you gotta go rescue the sages (again), you gotta collect korok seeds (again), you gotta do shrines (again), nobody acknowledges that you literally saved the entire world just a couple of years ago. It's like they weren't satisfied with BotW and wanted a do-over, but all it feels like is a rehash of the same ideas.
_Markram@reddit
Not only that, but in some aspects it stepped further from what BoTW established, the narrative design is just a mess.
And personally, even if I believe the whole building system was awe inspiring, it felt that detracted from the whole experience of exploring Hyrule. Made it less Immersive and reminded me constantly that I was playing a game.
richtofin819@reddit
I think reusing the map in particular was a mistake part of the appeal was learning to overcome the map and its challenges in botw but the other important part of the game was the sense of discovery and exploration that was unmatched.
The depths were cool until you realize that they are an inversed overworld. And the sky islands were just disappointing overall mostly considering of the tutorial island and a couple shrine locations. They really cheaped out on the sky islands.
I also admit the building is cool but it removes a lot of the challenge and sense of exploration when you can just fly everywhere or zoom over it on a massive vehicle.
Skrivz@reddit

quasarfern@reddit
I enjoyed it at first. When I decided to light up the underground root things it became work. After a while I just rushed to beat it and haven’t touched it. I played it late and it was a few years after playing botw on the wiiu so the gameplay felt fresh. It does make me appreciate the classic zelda style more.

Icanfallupstairs@reddit
Agreed. Fixed a lot of the issues I had with Botw, carried over a lot of issues, but the magic simply wasn't there
GrungeLord@reddit
I think TotK suffers from subtraction by addition. The magic of BotW to me was very much rooted in its simplicity. The weird out of place building mechanics and strange world layout meant the game didn't retain that satisfying tranquil vibe that the first game had in abundance.
iLoveFortnite11@reddit
Honestly Nintendo can make great games with a few small flaws that make them literally unplayable for me. The fights aren’t challenging when you can just pause and eat food whenever you need it. It’s so small but completely ruins the combat experience for me, and combat is half the fun.
BionisGuy@reddit
It's so weird since I did finish BOTW like 3 times give or take. I did 100% it my last playthrough and I did have a blast with it, everything was just so new and fresh with it.
TOTK fixed a lot of the issues I had with BOTW, played through TOTK once and never looked back, the magic was just gone as everyone else have said.
whynotethan@reddit
My main problem with tears of the kingdom is the story. I understand the appeal of a truly open world game, and being able to do whatever you want before beating the final boss, or simply fighting the final boss off rip. However I feel like the memory cutscenes were a lazy solution to building a in such a circumstance. I feel like it needed.. just more. It wasn't enough. More lore, more story beats, and in a more linear fashion. Like if you complete a main quest, you unlock a new memory, complete a quest pertaining to the memory, maybe get an artifact or accessory, rinse and repeat.
Also a gripe I have with open world games is, when you beat the boss, nothing in the world changes. I feel like you need a post game world, not a new game plus, but like "here's how the world turned out, now revisit characters, get a few new quests and other things to do post game like post game only achievements and content.
wirelessfingers@reddit
Not better in every way. Sky islands and depths are either lazy (see: the depths) or empty/repetitive (see: sky islands/most of the side content). The depths especially is such a fucking slog.
And the way the story is told through the dragon tears is like the single worst way to do it. You could accidentally get one of the final scenes early on and spoil the whole narrative for yourself. Said narrative is also much more entertaining and interesting than almost any of the stories told in the rest of the game.
Building is also clunky/annoying/allows you to beat most shrines using recall. I definitely don't think TOTK is better than BOTW.
gopher1409@reddit
My only complaint about BOTW is that it has some really clunky inventory menus and cooking is fucking tedious.
aghastamok@reddit
> cooking is fucking tedious
Eventually I would just fast travel to the volcano and toss all my ingredients on the ground to cook them. Fuck the cooking bowl animation.
aghastamok@reddit
> spoil the whole narrative
The first cutscene I saw in that game was the total spoiler one.

I knew this comment would be here all the prototype fans say this and on everyones soul you are all wrong it's really only the story that is dogshit (but admittedly it is a really big pile of dogshit that it's impossible to ignore). Every other aspect of the game is just straight up better in the second game it's one of my favorite games ever actually. I'm 100 percent sure if the story was at least mid the game would be crowned as a classic and maybe we would have more sequels to this day.

The last AC game I played was ACIII, they changed the way combat works and I hated having to play as Haytham for hours before I could play as the hero.
I know everyone says Black Flag is great but it felt like the whole modern day story had wrapped up with the events of ACIII anyway. The series peaked with Ezio and I'm OK consodering it done, even if they want to push out another game every few years.
Sgt_major_dodgy@reddit
I hated the fucking modern day story of Black Flag, like I'm coming home from a boring office job and they take me out of playing as a pirate to play as a office worker.

TheBeastlyStud@reddit
Black Flag was great but it didn't seem like an AC game. Sure the modern-day stuff was interesting since you played as some blank slate you could impress upon, but every time I was out of the Animus I wanted to go back in instead of dealing with Abstergo stuff.
Admittingly I never finished it. I got every fort and had all the upgrades and then my save got corrupted somehow and I was sent back days worth of progress to about half of that. Fucking Ubisoft.
It was really fun playing third person Sid Meier's: Pirates though.
Pepsiguy2@reddit
Black Flag starts a new modern day storyline. It's so silly to me that it's called "IV" when it's more like a soft reboot and begins the Apple of Eden storyline that's continued in Unity and Syndicate, then more in Rogue.

I don't think it's quite that for me. Objectively the game expanded on 3 and added a lot of fun new gameplay mechanics. I appreciated the tropical atmosphere more than the, mountainous Himalayan vibe. Which is a shame. I think I like the civil war as a concept. but found the characters unengaging and uninteresting. Yogi & Reg were fun. but the mercenaries, pirates, natives pulled it together. Vaas kinda overrated. Idk.

After playing all three games I definitely want to revisit the first one more than the other two.
It did have a lot of stuff that sucked, the planet missions and stuff where pretty meh.

Pennonymous_bis@reddit
I've always hated the toyish graphics, halos and glares everywhere; the music isn't as good; the campaign isn't as good; they removed too many units and stuff to my liking and added transformers; ah and as if the fights didn't look cluttered enough they can happen in the shape of big army ball vs big army ball...
I'm sure you're right though. But, yeah... nor for me.

Very very true. A lot of bootlickers say the campaign is better in the second one, but no, the first one is up there with some of the best written games out there in my opinion
Yeah, it didn't work great in red alert 3 and it didn't work great here either
True as well. Honestly, my love for the game probably stems from the fact that I only play custom maps rather than the base game. There's a LOT you can do with the engine, it's amazing. I've seen units from other strategy games pulled into SC2, like the exact same model and animations and sounds and everything, it's wild.

Unreal Tournament 2003 was just like this compared to original UT. So pretty, great guns, just felt off in comparison.
They later rebalanced it and added some new game modes and it was such a comprehensive upgrade that instead of releasing it as a software patch they replaced the entire game at retail as Unreal Tournament 2004. They actually gave you a refund via rebate if you had previously bought UT2003. UT2004 was fantastic.

Borderlands 2 to Borderlands 3 as the gun play is better but too many guns insta delete enemies and legendries just kind of drop out of fucking everything so you never have those fun parts where your like I don't have any legendries or unique weapons to use so I will grab a gun from a vendor that looks cool and have some fun with that. Also, farming weapons just feels worse as most the time you are farming for anoints and nothing else. The end game dosen't feel as fun as BL2's endgame as you have 2 raids and a raid boss and 1 of said raids is really not fun to play.

first game felt like mass effect 1 where you where thrown into this completely unique interesting world with a very engaging plot as you untangle the main mystery of said world and it unfolds to reveal a satisfying conclusion that also sets up the next few games.
forbidden west has a much weaker plot, characters that regress and trod on similar arcs they had in the first game and finally a terrible ending out of left field that is no way has much connection to what the first game was going for. at least at the end of mass effect 2 the reapers where still the main antagonists.
gameplay-wise i liked that the first game let you carry seemingly unlimited supplies so by the end you could spam whatever weapons you wanted

I don't think this theory has a name, but there's a general agreement:
Movie, game, book, whatever. If a sequel is not absolutely "better than" the original... the original wins. There's no ties. Tie goes to the original.
But honestly that theory is mostly seen in movies. There's plenty of games where a sequel is an improvement on the original. Better technology doesn't make a better story, main factor in a movie. But better technology frequently makes better gameplay, which can overcome other deficits in a game.
TNTspaz@reddit

An optional side mission has you playing as a deaf girl going around spray painting over graffiti, basically acting as a showcase for the DualSense controller's haptics (since there's no sound). It's slow and boring, it feels so out of place that it's almost comical. There's also another comically boring side mission where you help a gay high schooler ask his crush to prom. The missions feel like they're there to check off heartless corporate diversity checkboxes than meaningful representation or interesting mission design.

I never played the original, I started with bl2. But bl2 is absolutely the peak game for me thus far in my life. The characters were diverse and funny as fuck. To the point that I can tell they tried to remake the fan favorites, like Tiny Tina, in bl3 with that awful twat of a character. Ava, I think?
The main antagonist is perfection, absolutely insane, very hate-able. The hunters were all great, though I went Axton nearly every time.
Bl3 is so advanced by comparison. Better gunplay, better movement, more interesting areas, unique quests. And it's just not the same.
Jeffzie@reddit
2 is just very different from 1. In borderlands 1, it's like you're stumbling across a barren wasteland, helping some people out here and there. The story is pretty much just there in the background for you to find, but the core of the game is that you're on a rusty shithole of a planet where the people have gone insane due to the nature of it all.
In 2, the story is much more prevalent and the characters are a lot more fleshed out, but that vibe of exploring a hellhole has completely vanished. Even the stuff the bandits shout at you has gone from "fuck you asshole i'll kill you" to "look how wacky kooky we are lol".
It's just different, and I wish there'd be another game like the first at some point. Won't happen though.
Ahrunean@reddit
That's a good explanation of the difference. It reminds me of Saints Row, I think the second and third ones. Second was a GTA wannabie, super gritty and dark. Third one is "lol, dildo bat".

Titanfall, 2.is great, don't get me wrong, but 1 feels so nice

Half Life 2.
HL1 just has something about it in the level design that HL2 doesn't. I go back to play Blast Pit, Residue Processing, and Lambda Core semi-regularly, but I only go back for Highway 17 in HL2.

Bioshock 2. The gameplay is massively improved, but the story is pretty forgettable.

Dead Rising 2 is better in every way to 1, but 1 does something so right idk I prefer it, but 2 is still a great game. Off the Record beats 2 though, mainly cause it's just a DLC area and retold story.

Perfect Dark was made better in every way.
But you still can't take anything away from GoldenEye.

All of them, because you're a loser who thinks everything really was better when you were a kid ,despite every generation in history thinking that, including the oldest piece of writing in history being about "kids these days". News flash, every child is playing Fortnite because the alternative is being a massive 🚬🐐 who complains about media on reddit

Thief 2 is a huge improvement over Thief 1 in every imaginable way, but Thief 1 still has this chilling, supernatural atmosphere that 2 didn't
