H5N1 has not gone away. "In total, 14 human infections have been confirmed in 2025, six of which have been fatal"

This BNO News article from July 29, 2025, reports on Cambodia's fourteenth human H5N1 bird flu case of the year. The report details the condition of a 26-year-old man from Siem Reap Province who is receiving intensive care for severe symptoms. Investigations revealed the patient slaughtered chickens before falling ill, and close contacts are being given Tamiflu as a preventative measure. The article notes a rise in cases since June 2025, with six fatalities so far this year, and mentions different H5N1 strains, including clade 2.3.2.1c, which is endemic to Cambodia, and clade 2.3.4.4b, a globally spreading variant.

Still waiting for the first human to human case.
iChinguChing@reddit (OP)
There have been some suspicious cases in Cambodia, but none confirmed. With a mortality rate so high (40% vs \~0.23% for Covid), if it does go H2H we might be royally stuffed. The mortality rate in other mammals is very high so I have no reason to think we will get a special pass. Of course, we can vaccinate where they could not.
Quick_Step_1755@reddit
I don't know if I'd trust some rushed vaccine. 40% mortality means the odds are in my favor to do just fine. Supplements probably make those odds even better.
-goob@reddit
Hey so you should search "1d10" on Google and record how many refreshes it takes for you to get a number of 4 or less. Then do it again and again. This should help you develop a better intuitive understanding of what 40% means.

"40% mortality means the odds are in my favor to do just fine. "
lol
I am going to assume sarcasm, but just in case, you do realize major parts of our economy would fold. Labour specialization would see to that.

Then we have the antivax movement. Those guys will get pushed in the "right direction " by people on the internet who do not have the world's best interests at heart.
wanderingpeddlar@reddit
Just my opinion but if it kicks off H2H transfer with a case fatality rate of 40% to 50% the antivax movement is going to disappear. For several reasons.
One no one wants to be around someone shedding H5N1 that can kill them.
If you remember the Influenza pandemics small towns blocked off the highway access to their towns and manned the barricades with guns. People that refused to vax were often sent away.
Read up about forced quarantine
Antivaxxers are the last thing you will need to be worried about. They will get religion about getting a vax or die
adoradear@reddit
The mortality rate might actually be helpful. Look at SARS. Its mortality rate was 30-40% if I remember correctly. High mortality rate usually means that it has less of a chance to spread (kills the host), unless it has a long latency period or asymptomatic shedding phase.
iChinguChing@reddit (OP)
It definitely hasn't worked out that way so far with H5N1. Look at the numbers of marine mammals that died in S. America. At least 30,000 South American sea lions in Peru and Chile alone.
zuneza@reddit
The birds are the real tell. They have transportation and habitation similar to humans and they get merced hard by this disease.
XxTreeFiddyxX@reddit
Gross. Im not doing that with a woman!

Fortunately it hasn't evolved to where it can jump person to person. Hopefully it stays that way.

The longer this goes on the closer we get to a mix with another air-borne virus. I hope it doesn't, but I can't help but think we are sleepwalking to a cliff.
NukeouT@reddit
Good news is coronavirus was caused by the chinese dictatorship fucking around with CRISPR in a shitty biolab where they were ignoring basic safety protocols
It did not naturally make the jump
Miss-Information_@reddit
Every major global health org and university has looked at the DNA of COVID 19 and concluded there's zero genetic evidence to support that claim. It's pretty much just the weird conservative crowd that buys this.
NukeouT@reddit
No. The dictatorship of china refuses to provide the necessary information.
Please don't shill for the incompetent communists
"🇺🇳: much of the information needed to evaluate fully all hypotheses has not been provided."

Miss-Information_@reddit
“the weight of available evidence…suggests zoonotic spillover…either directly from bats or through an intermediate host.”
The absence of evidence is no evidence. So like I said, until there's more information there's literally no evidence of what you claimed....
NukeouT@reddit
Likewise trump not releasing the epstein files because hes innocent does not point to a lack of guilt
Miss-Information_@reddit
Lol, nice job switching the conversation entirely. You would almost have a point if Trump wasn't already a legally culpable rapist named in piles of existing evidence and by multiple victims and accomplices.
NukeouT@reddit
What and theres just as much information pointing to the dictatorship of china creating coronavirus which was my whole point 👉
Miss-Information_@reddit
Except there isn't, but you keep believing that weird conservative junk if it makes you happy
NukeouT@reddit
Conservative is an economic policy
Facts are facts. Seperate from politics
Miss-Information_@reddit
'Conservative' came from the French political movement trying to conserve monarchy. It's literally always been a political leaning. You continue to be very confident while having no idea what you're even talking about.
NukeouT@reddit
That could be and it also comes from the word "conserve" like to conserve money 💰
I like that you don't understand the root meaning of words but still try to lord over people
wanderingpeddlar@reddit
The better news is no it didn't. Even better news they are about 20 totally new coronaviruses rolling around bat populations in China. And at any time one of them can jump directly to humans. And we are back to the start of another pandemic.
Get this straight the viruses can jump straight to humans and it happens all the time. We have proof of this from researchers that went into China and studied bat populations pre pandemic. They found many brand new unknown to humans new coronaviruses. Then they studied the populations that lived around the bat colonies. They found evidence of many exposures to viruses that were not the known ones that we normally see each year.
For what ever reason they never broke out into the general population. Either they are not contagious enough or simply never got passed on.
COVID is just a warning bell.
NukeouT@reddit
Or they did but were not enhanced in a bio lab so while some people died it didn't spread beyond the censored territory of the dictatorship and the international community never noticed
wanderingpeddlar@reddit
No they didn't. There never has been a shred of legitimate (meaning not made up) evidence that COVID was made in a lab. The concept that it was came from Qanon and has zero basis in fact.
And since scientists working in China have proven viruses jump straight to humans the idea of a lab is unnecessary for the virus to jump to humans.
NukeouT@reddit
It does not. I just showed you that UN hasn't gotten the requested information from the dictatorship of china
And you refuse to acknowledge that fact. 😒
wanderingpeddlar@reddit
You haven't shown anything at all.
NukeouT@reddit
Look in the other thread. Reddit won't let me navigate to it on Android
iChinguChing@reddit (OP)
Well h5n1 has already jumped across many species so I would not take solace in how covid made the jump.
NukeouT@reddit
If there was nothing to hide they would not have hidden it from the UN commission and the world 🌎
gamergirlgstring@reddit
how do you say some schizo shit like that, be told “okay i guess, but that’s not what i said,” and then just go back to the schizo shit? do you do this in public around others? do they enjoy your company
NukeouT@reddit
This is like when a crowd of people goes to a police station to report that they saw dozens of children's corpses at this one guys house party and the police just goes "now dog theres nonreasonnto get a court order to search the place" the guy is obviously innocent because we haven't searched the place or found anything 🙄
zuneza@reddit
Nature makes those same jumps all the time and nature does not follow basic safety protocols for humans.
NukeouT@reddit
Its well documented that they had a plan there that wasn't following safety guidelines for its bioactive level and that that specific lab was working on making coronaviruses compatible with humans "in order to study what would happen in a pandemic"
IncomingAxofKindness@reddit
Bad news is, the way ChatGPT is headed, you'll be able to design COVID 26 on your phone.

False. The last time I checked, recent Cambodian cases had the two critical mutations needed to spread human to human. E627K and M631L are present in the same strain. There may be other mutations that aren't helping it spread.

"In fact, some researchers thought the virus might just be unable to swap an amino acid at position 226 outside the lab. But then came the mysterious case of a severely sick teenager in Canada who has been hospitalized with H5N1 since early November. Virus sequences from that patient suggest some H5N1s had changed the amino acid at position 226 whereas others had not, says Jesse Bloom, an evolutionary biologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. “It looks like during the infection of this individual, the virus could have been evolving towards at least some of the mutations that would adapt it to humans.” This was not the feared 226L mutation: The amino acid had changed to a histidine instead of leucine. Still, “It showed that those sites are mutable in these viruses,” says Tom Peacock, an influenza virologist at the Pirbright Institute. And the glutamine substitution, together with another mutation in the same virus at position 190, could have the same effect as the 226L. For Peacock and others, the finding upped concern about an imminent pandemic."

Primal_Thrak@reddit
Too much DNA into mortality and not enough into infection rate. Rookie mistake.
Ricky_Ventura@reddit
Gotta limit lethality mutations until you get worldwide infection -- especially Greenland and Madagascar. Then go into full lethality to hit the delay threshold on the cure
MAXMEISTER747@reddit
Iceland too. Best to invest in transmission as much as possible.

I can't believe it, h5n1 is already found in the air on dairy farms

We're living in a post scarcity society where we can all coordinate effort at the speed of light and we can't handle preventable illnesses.

We're doing it right now.

JackONhs@reddit
Where the fuck are you living that everyone is being fed and housed? I know two of my coworkers who are homeless and many more who often complain of not having enough food to eat.
bluelifesacrifice@reddit
Because there's not enough resources to organize or due to artificial scarcity?
JackONhs@reddit
Depends where you draw the line at artificial scarcity. There are plenty of homes, but they are all too nice for people like us so they sit empty instead. There is plenty of food around, but it's priced based on what the office workers are willing to pay for it, which is about 3x more then we have to budget for food.
dolphindidler@reddit
You mean "we can feed, house and give every person a phone" we just choose to not do it for everyone because capitalism.
bluelifesacrifice@reddit
Gotta make that money off artificial scarcity.
Airilsai@reddit
What the fuck are you smoking? There are hundreds of thousands of homeless, millions lacking food.
One could argue we could, but no one can argue we're doing it.

After being in the military and private sector I am convinced most of our problems is that we don't make things stupid proof and then follow up with regular, standardized education.
After that the problem is fraudsters who are just trying to scam people.

We’re definitely not post-scarcity.
lukaskywalker@reddit
How are people getting it still? I’d it directly from chicken blood only at this point. It can it come from just close contact with an infected bird. I’m worried because my balcony has a million pigeons what’s
halfbakedr@reddit
Bird shit. Aerosols from infected birds. I would think about dissuading birds from landing on your balcony, if possible.

That’s what I was worried about when I clean the balcony once a week it’s disgusting. Will start wearing a mask
