Once people start getting nervous and abandoning cars it’ll only get worse.
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
Just like the movies!
50shadesofgilf@reddit
Ya know... I never thought about how valuable things like mountain bikes would be post apocalypse.🤔 Come to think of it, I can't think of a single dystopian movie or tv series that features bicycles as the ad hoc transportation. Plus, you're also riding around on a electrical generator.
SiWeyNoWay@reddit
I bought a bike after the fires as part of my earthquake prep
agent_flounder@reddit
The key is actually being in shape enough to ride it. I quickly forget how much just riding around small hills in my neighborhood kicks my ass. 10 miles like that and I would be done for.
iridescent-shimmer@reddit
Okay I am very ignorant, but this is a thing? Does it require a lot of balance or something? I had no idea!
hadtobethetacos@reddit
It takes a lot of cardio to ride a bike with any kind of speed, and it takes significantly more to go uphill.
TraditionalLaw7763@reddit
This is why we fat kids invested in e-bikes and on the go solar panel charging stations!
iridescent-shimmer@reddit
A dirt bike is included in that? I guess that's what confused me!
QHCprints@reddit
Read a post years ago about a guy who traveled a lot for work and got stranded after 9/11. Took up long distance cycling as a hobby and kept enough cash on him while traveling to buy a not-shitty road bike off the shelf if he needed to get home in TEOTWAWKI.
SiWeyNoWay@reddit
Damn. But also, I get it
Alarming-Leg-2865@reddit
Yeah unless you're trying to do it with a 40 to 50# pack on your back. I ruck every other day with 30# on my back for 2 miles at a fast walk. I do it in 34 minutes flat and by the time I get back to the house I'm wiped. I also own a Hardrock mountain bike and given the choice I would take that over walking with a pack any day of the week. (Depending on terrain).
I work out of town regularly were I ended up renting a house long term. My drive back in forth is usually 2 hours one way without traffic. If I had to walk this to get home with a heavy pack it would take me at least a week to make it. I've since started keeping this setup in my rental garage just in case. Picked the cart up for $100 on Amazon. It can either be pulled by the bike or it has handles if you want to walk and pull it allowing you to carry heavier loads or in case your bike breaks down.
Griseldax@reddit
40 minutes to work by car 🚗 / motorcycle 🏍️
3 hours to work by bicycle 🚲
14 hours to work by walking🚶♂️
Walking when disaster strikes takes forever from A to B... 😬 A bicycle as backup is great, and a motorcycle would be best to get around traffic!
pathofthebean@reddit
E bikes or gas motor bikes
NeonSwank@reddit
Just keep in mind for a natural disaster/SHTF situation that e bike is only good for about a day if the power grid goes down.
Gas a few days at most
Which means either bringing a solar recharger or siphoning gas for long term use.
I think id rather just have a regular bike.
4peaks2spheres@reddit
E-bike are an amazing option.
kormer@reddit
While not a terrible idea, this would be infinitely better if you connected it to a flywheel so you can pedal at a constant rate for a longer period of time. Then you can pull the power out into a sawmill as you need it.
You will need some combination of freewheels, a clutch, transmission, and a lot of gears to make it work well. Ideally you could even connect multiple bikes throughout your community to keep it going.
lustforrust@reddit
The easiest way to build a flywheel for this drag saw would be to use a cycling trainer stand. They replace the rear wheel and will also solve the problem of holding up the bike.
50shadesofgilf@reddit
Lol
My brother in Christ... That's just a random gif I found that was tangentially related to the topic...🤦🏼♂️I only used that gif because I thought it give y'all a lil chuckle.😁
You're right though, especially about the flywheel.
I mentioned bikes as a simple generator that you could "bring with you" as you traveled.
If I was building a static generator I'd skip pedal power completely and go straight to building a simple steam engine, as well as things like using a wood gas generator for some old school automobiling.
Doctor_Moon69@reddit
Off the top of my head, I can only think of two: Deep Impact’s dirt bike scene and Nick Andros meeting Tom Cullen and traveling through Kansas on bikes in “the stand”

The book series Dies The Fire (or Emberverse series) by SM Stirling features bikes heavily in the first three books or so
Atomsq@reddit
Damn
dhtrofisis@reddit
I confess i only made it halfway through the fourth book. The first three are more about learning how to survive and live in a changed world, after that it becomes more politics and kingdoms which didn't interest me as much.
50shadesofgilf@reddit
Love the cover art. The synopsis reminds me of the TV show Revolution, which I enjoyed. Thanks for the recommendation stranger.☺️I've been jonesing for some good dystopia-esque media for a hot minute and y'all are recommending the exact stuff I'm into.
Bruff_lingel@reddit
Fair warning, after the first 3 books the series takes a hard turn towards fantasy. Island in a sea of time is another series by S.M. Striling and just as good imo.
Peripateticdreamer84@reddit
Agreed on the hard turn. I felt like the author forgot what genre the book was in. Wasn’t Island in a sea of time the inverse series of Dies the Fire?
Bruff_lingel@reddit
Yeah! It sticks much closer to sci/fi too. Bonus age of sail historical fiction too.
50shadesofgilf@reddit
I guess I'll just have to read it and see. No spoilers though 🫣 Lol
I just saw the cover art for the first Sea of Time book and it's killing me.😆 I love the concept though. It reminds me a lot of the Philadelphia Experiment.

Capt_Gremerica@reddit
One segment of World War Z had them using bikes...but that's all I can think of
lightbulbfragment@reddit
Which is one of the few things from the book they actually used. Max Brooks actually suggested books as a faster, quieter means of travel in The Zombie Survival Guide (which is just a fun twist on teaching prepping) and then had fictional survivors utilize the idea in his WWZ book.
I can probably think of quite a few books when bikes save the day vs cars but they are less flashy I guess so movies tend not to bother.
MONSTERBEARMAN@reddit
I have a bike and a bike trailer. Although it increases the footprint width quite a bit, it is still quite compact and able to fit between most obstructions. I can carry my fully loaded backpacking pack and have room for extra food.
50shadesofgilf@reddit
athomevoyager@reddit
Yep, this was part of my motivation for getting into mountain biking lately. Helene wrecked my home town and since then I've been doing what I can to make sure we're not stranded without food and power in the future.
50shadesofgilf@reddit
I'm sorry for your loss stranger. That just happened last year right? We got some hurricane force winds (just the wind) where I'm at a while back, and that little taste really put into perspective how powerful and dangerous hurricanes can be.

Especially for something like that where you evacuate a relatively short distance. Wouldnt be a bad idea to preemptively find a few good routes to high ground on foot/bike, and hike/ride it every now and then to learn the area well and make sure you can physically handle it.
zoinkability@reddit
Yep, and to do it with any kids or older folks. That is probably the achilles heel of getting out under your own power — dependents who maybe less capable of the effort.

slickrok@reddit
The fuck are you talking about?
This is bc everyone is evacuating from the warning, just like hurricane evacs go in FL.
redaroodle@reddit
A road network’s capacity is highly dependent on speed limits.
Hawaii’s overly draconian low speed limits, and residents who drive even slower, wholly exacerbated the gridlock from this post.
I can guarantee you the “rushing to get to higher ground” here wasn’t rushing at all in a proper sense, and massively influenced this gridlock.
Axeaxa_Xaxaxeie@reddit

beach_2_beach@reddit
How many westerners are capable of walking more than say 2 miles. On flat ground.
Successful-Memory839@reddit
Outside of the US I can't think of a single country where a 3.2km walk would be unusual. That's shorter than my morning walk to work.
f47Thunderbolt@reddit
In 86 degrees high humidity in hawaii?
Successful-Memory839@reddit
30 degrees celcius at 63% humdity, you don't have to hike up a mountain just find higher ground.
f47Thunderbolt@reddit
Its a 30 mile hike. Because Oprah owns 1,000 acres preventing use of the shortest routes. I been to Maui multiple times and know the lay of the land.
Successful-Memory839@reddit
Americans really are hamstrung when it comes to civil protest aren't they?
jaqian@reddit
Correction how many Americans. The rest of the West has no issue with this.
Ok_Builder_4225@reddit
Most, I bet. I'm brutally out of shape and still managed when I went on a long walk for the first time in like a decade. It's just not convenient. Especially if you're making unwise decisions and trying to haul a bunch of stuff with you. Of course, it does also get much harder if you have small children. Not as much to be done about that one. Except maybe get a bike.
Successful-Memory839@reddit
And this is why so many of those 'preper' types are going to be the first to die. They can't escape, they can't defend themselves and if someone lays them to siege they will run out of bullets eventually.

AdAble557@reddit
If using a bike to get out, has anyone considered a bike trailer? Obviously you can have a backpack, but it would come in handy if you have other supplies and or with someone who can't ride
DwarvenRedshirt@reddit
In a short term "high risk" situation like that, I wouldn't use a bike trailer. You want maximum mobility in potentially tight spaces. It's a short term event in that there'll be recovery operations after (ie. you've got avenues to get supplies, you're not totally cut off).
trailquail@reddit
This is why you always evacuate as early as you can. The evacuation may be called off and you have to head back home, but that’s way better than getting stuck in evacuation traffic and potentially not making it out in time. I learned my lesson during hurricane Rita.
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
Seeing this is just... infuriating, they have a potential historic level tsunami coming (based on earthquake size) and everything is just gridlock, what a way to die, don't they have evacuation traffic plans for this?
DwarvenRedshirt@reddit
Not sure you can have evacuation plans for that many cats, err, humans.
trailquail@reddit
I don’t know whether the gridlock is due to poor evacuation management or just the fact that there’s such a congested area right on the beach there. That’s a lot of people to get out of there even with pretty good advance notice.
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
I hope this turns out to be a nothing burger and everyone learns from it.
trailquail@reddit
I do, too. My late FIL was a survivor of both the 1946 and 1960 tsunamis and his stories about them always scared me.

I was working at Honda in Ohio in 2011, to see / hear the distress that day from co-workers has stuck with me. Having gone through an evacuation during Hurricane Rita, those people are fucked. Scooters/motorcycles are going to be the champs in this situation. Grab your important paperwork and pets and GTFO.

normal for Oahu.
Pyroclastic_Hammer@reddit
That’s why there needs to be a concerted effort by the community to have mass transit systems rerouted and available for this sort of mass evacuation event. Everyone piling into their own car is just a horrible “plan”.

DwarvenRedshirt@reddit
You get stuck in that kind of situation when the tsunami hits, you’re probably boned, but there is still a chance depending on the situation. It reminds me of this clip from a dashcam of a survivor of the 2011 Japan Tsunami. https://youtu.be/eUdGfplrbKU?si=Wq8X5tSAMhEU4ruw

paralleltimelines@reddit
Resident here, the initial contact has been manageable so far, better everyone tried to play it safe. Hopefully we do until we get an all clear in a couple more hours.
I actually was at the movie theater when the alerts hit, 5 hours before estimated arrival at 19:10. Plenty people got up to get refunds and leave. My movie probably had 15 peopl and they gradually trickled out, down to 3 by the end.
The theater is 2 miles inland and 1 mile into the designated tsunami safe zone so I figured I'd be ok with 1.5 hours between movie ending and tsunami touchdown.
My roommate was on the way home and should've been there around 15:30 to top off our water buckets and make sure the dogs are ok. They decided to get gas at Costco, just around the corner from my theater. Took them 30min to get gas, then 1.5 hours to drive a measly 4.6 miles.
I finished my movie, ready at any time to park the car somewhere legal and hike it up home, and it would take me 2 hours max from the farthest point, again I'm already in a safe zone.
I took an alternate, longer way home and got there in a much faster 40min, arriving just 20 minutes after the roomie, who was like HOW DID YOU DO THAT.
It was very nice to come home to a well stocked home. Roomie had topped off my gravity filters a little too much, but I moved the water around before any spilled over. Also filled am empty rain barrel with 55gal.
Very relaxed experience to me, but very interesting to see the anxiety happen in realtime. Roomie and dogs were still on edge, but I felt very comfortable throughout. Really good practice and my lack of anxiety makes all this prep so worth it.

Ricky_Ventura@reddit
No, the other poster is correct. Theyre running parallel to the ocean so they're all, 100% of them, trying to connect to an inland street further ahead.
Perhaps_A_Cat@reddit
Oh okay. I've never been to Hawaii. I do know that they only have one bus called the one bus. I honestly don't know what I would do in their position but I like walking long distances so I would probably start walking towards higher ground.
They might get a tsunami but it's not going to be all that tall. By the time it gets out to Tacoma, I think it's supposed to be like a foot and change and that'll be around 2:00 a.m. My time.
RoxnDox@reddit
The thing about tsunamis, though, is that the runup is affected not only by the actual wave height out at sea, but also by the undersea topography. A harbor or bay may be shaped like a natural funnel that can focus the water's energy to create a much higher final height. At the same time a headband nearby may experience almost nothing.
Island residents are taking the event seriously, which is good. They may need revised plans, though, to emphasize going up into those tall buildings rather than going inland.
Perhaps_A_Cat@reddit
It's been so long since I looked at hydrology. I defer to you, I recognize some of those words 😆

That street is parallel to the ocean. People are probably going both directions to try to connect to a street that goes away from the ocean and up the slope.
