As of 8:30 PM ET tonight, all data from the NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has stopped transmitting. Includes ACE solar wind data, coronagraphs, all GOES instruments like magnetometers, etc. Essentially leaves us “flying blind” as it pertains to space weather conditions for the time being

Tell that to the ISS inhabitants
MickyFany@reddit
How will we know when to put our foil hat on?
Majestic-Bowler-6184@reddit
So...this reeks of them trying to privatize the weather forecast systems. Fuck that, I'll look at the sky. I'll miss radar though.
United-Anybody-2123@reddit
Is this off-line for good?
Sorry_Exercise_9603@reddit
Unlikely. The generals will be apoplectic. They need that data to manage the satellites.
_Baphomet_@reddit
Could it just be shut off to the public? I don’t know how all that works, like the gov still has it but doesn’t share with us?
AssumptionLate5722@reddit
Getting ready to make us pay an America+ subscription to access any public data
wlaugh29@reddit
Delete this comment. Don't give them any ideas.

Literally page 675 of Project 2025. https://static.heritage.org/project2025/2025_MandateForLeadership_FULL.pdf
wlaugh29@reddit
I checked page 675 and didn't see it. What's the heading?
_Baphomet_@reddit
I think he’s talking about how they want the NWS to commercialize themselves like AccuWeather, not necessarily as a subscription, but make it turn a profit
wlaugh29@reddit
Oh, I thought they were talking about social points or something. I saw the other day AccuWeather is eliminating it's free tier API. How convenient.
_Baphomet_@reddit
Lame, makes us poorer and less informed.
un1ptf@reddit
As if they haven't thought of such a thing already. Please.
waxonwaxoff1000@reddit
This ^^
HeyIplayThatgame@reddit
My thought exactly. We’re blind
hectorbrydan@reddit
Could be their way of cutting out climate scientists?
Or testing out geoengineering in secret, sulfur dioxide or something in upper atmosphere for blocking the sun.
What could go wrong! /s
Rich-Hovercraft-65@reddit
Don't say that too loud, DOGE might hear you.
Jazzlike-Cup-5336@reddit (OP)
I’d say that’s pretty much entirely out of the question, IF we somehow lived in normal times. But as we know…
Ricky_Ventura@reddit
Gotta save money so we can forcibly institutionalize the ADHD kids somehoe
BicycleNo69420@reddit
Oh it's only kids?
I legit had a nightmare that make America healthy again "agents" were disappearing us at night. I hate these assholes so much
United-Anybody-2123@reddit
I hear you. 2025, anything can and will probably happen.
delicious_dirt_@reddit
This was my question too ^

This is us winning, right?
AnomalyNexus@reddit
Does this even save substantial amounts of money? I get the cut fat drive but it sure seems to be hitting a lot of muscle
Dapper-Arachnid-5463@reddit
What does this mean exactly?
Jazzlike-Cup-5336@reddit (OP)
Update: It looks like NASA’s ISWA is still reporting ACE data, so no simultaneous satellite hardware/software failures (obviously, but still have to rule it out) or some top down restriction of information to the public. DOGE is still on the table I assume, but most likely just a comms issue at NOAA.
Busy_Phase_1934@reddit
Was there any scheduled maintenance?
Plastic_Regret_730@reddit
Ah crap... just when I thought is was safe to drive to work this morning!
couldbeahumanbean@reddit
Hell yea!
miyake event, lez gooooooooo!
mike_hawk_420@reddit
Is this from budget cuts or a malfunction?
Jazzlike-Cup-5336@reddit (OP)
99.9% chance it’s just an outage. If we were living in normal times, I’d go ahead and say 100% because this information is so essentially, but alas
systemshock869@reddit
Great post, right on par for "r/prepperintel" lmao

Their social media appears to be gone as well... I'll edit if I'm just being a doomer and find out I'm wrong.
sherwood_bosco@reddit
We need more high strung people that are very protective of NOAA.
IncomingAxofKindness@reddit
Maybe they just turned it off for a brief ~~purge of any DEI material~~ update.
asmodeuskraemer@reddit
I'd like to echo the other response. Thank you for checking for those of us who don't have social media
One_Dragonfruit_7556@reddit
Always good to have people who can check for those of us without so much social media. Thank you

I use an app called space weather live. It’s run by Belgians and unlikely to be impacted by any political shenanigans.

They have a website too.

UPDATE: As of 11:48 PM, looks like everything is back transmitting now!
I’m unsure if I should just go ahead and delete the entire post, but in case any other issues pop up (and because we still don’t know a reason for the outage in the first place) I’ll probably keep it up for the time being.
bernmont2016@reddit
Don't delete, it was accurate information when it was posted. If too many later replies overlook your update, you can ask a mod to lock the thread and/or pin a copy of your update to the top of the replies.
HappyAnimalCracker@reddit
Yeah leave it up. Had you deleted it when it first came back, I might never have known it happened and this is something I’m interested in. I appreciate the post! Thanks
GuiltyYams@reddit
Lotta FUD going on here. Was offline like 10 minutes.

Please let there be another Carrington event and let the dimwitted slobs in the administration be held responsible for not keeping vital safety information available to the citizenry. Sucks to suck, eh mates?

How can you tell this?
Jazzlike-Cup-5336@reddit (OP)
You can click on products in the link like “Real time solar wind” or “GOES magnetometer” and see that there’s a cutoff beginning a few hours ago
Many-Wasabi9141@reddit
They probably just adjusted the graphs to include empty time in front.
It looks fine to me, real time seems fine, everything seems fine.
There was a small gap in coverage for solar wind but that's normal and happens all the time.
Jazzlike-Cup-5336@reddit (OP)
Looks like it’s actually just back up now, it was looking different up until right this instant lol
Many-Wasabi9141@reddit
Just fear mongering out here... ITS ALL OVER! I MISREAD THE GRAPHS!
Environmental-Gas361@reddit
Thank you!
GladMongoose@reddit
This is likely part of it as well. I almost wonder if they got the AM and PM mixed up lol.
farganbastige@reddit
Looks like some data hasn't been updated on Jul 29 UTC yet but other reports are current.
Warm-Okra2792@reddit
Are the satellites still transmitting and we're not processing the data? Citizen scientists can probably replicate the data unless they are shut off.
Individual-Engine401@reddit
has this long of ‘outage’ ever happened before? Unsettling regardless.
Mojave0@reddit
GOES X Ray Flux is now reporting data as of 3:42 AM GMT that would be 11:42 PM Eastern
Mojave0@reddit
Sun does not have any big AR’s on it right now so indeed likely an issue on NOAAs end
4chzbrgrzplz@reddit
And why. The stuff is there to collect data right? They just aren’t sending it out publicly?
Ok_Item_9953@reddit
How long will this last?
AliceCode@reddit
But what is the significance of this, if any?
Formal-Hawk9274@reddit
Iq much?
AliceCode@reddit
Sorry that I don't know anything about this topic. I spend all day writing code.
Jazzlike-Cup-5336@reddit (OP)
Power grid operators, satellite operators, and GPS operators (including commercial farming operations) all need access to this data to ensure limited disruptions of their services. Practically, an outage of a few hours doesn’t matter. It’s not like a solar flare can just sneak up on us because it takes many hours (99% of the time it’s days, but under 24 hours is possible in very large flares) for them to reach earth, and not much activity was happening tonight. Significance to the average person? Nothing at all really for now
Psychicgoat2@reddit
This is horrifying.
lukaskywalker@reddit
Likely doge isn’t it. 🤦♂️
Jazzlike-Cup-5336@reddit (OP)
There are a lot of budget cuts to heliophysics programs planned, see this post that I made as an explainer, but nothing that would be going into effect right now. This definitely just seems to be an outage - but I guess issues like staffing cuts could always play a role.
totallyenthused@reddit
Okay. But why. The link is live and space weather is showing current.
changed_later__@reddit
The site is still up, the data feeds are not updating.

Because cruelty is the point.

I don’t have a blue what you are referencing but …
Alt NOAA on Bluesky has set this up. They are not official.

What's the indication of this?

It’s transmitting now
