Adoption process in America?

We've adopted two children at birth in private adoptions. First step is a home study with a licensed social worker, and lots of paperwork - financial info, medical reports, background checks, letters of recommendation, etc. Once the home study was approved, then we hired an attorney to help us. Some people work with an adoption agency, we choose to work with an attorney that specializes in adoptions (as recommended to us by our home study person). We also created a profile book that would be sent to prospective birth mothers. The attorney would find prospective situations for us, and we got a little bit (usually minimal) of information about the birth mother and situation, and decided whether or not we wanted to be submitted. Then it was up to the birth mother on whether or not she chose us. Once we were matched, there was more paperwork - mostly just the lawyer fees for the birth mothers attorney and the estimated cost for her living expenses until the baby was born. We had periodic phone or zoom calls with her through the pregnancy. We flew to the state she was in a few days before she was scheduled to give birth, and then just waited. We got a call when she went to the hospital, and we went as well. The hospital was able to give us our own room, and brought the baby to us after a few hours. With baby #1, we meet the birth mother in the hospital, and spent a little time together so we could talk. Her attorney met us, and the birth mother and father signed the consent forms. Then, she was discharged and we were allowed to leave with the baby. We had to wait for paperwork, known as the ICPC (interstate compact for the placement of children) to be approved by both states - the one we live in, and the one where the baby was born. That took about 2 days. We stayed in the birth state for the 7 day checkup with a pediatrician, baby was given a clean bill of health, and the doctor said we were good to fly home with the baby. We waited another 2 days (so we'd be flying on a major holiday and airports would be less crowded) then flew home. Once we were home, we had 2 "post placement" visits with the social worker who did our home study, and after getting favorable results, we were clear to finalize the adoption with a judge. We meet over zoom, the judge signed, and baby was officially ours. The judge also signed an order to have the birth state reissue the birth certificate with us listed as the parents and our last name as the baby's last name. Once we got that in the mail, then we could apply for a SSN. We have a shared Google photos album where we can share pictures with the birth mom. We agreed on a certain frequency, but we share more than that. She can also send us a letter through the attorney if she wants. Our 2nd adoption was much the same, although the birth mother checked herself out of the hospital against medical advice pretty much as soon as she could, and we didn't have any contact with her in the hospital.
