Pavement resurfaced, how long until I can drive over it?

Woke up this morning to the lovely sound of a crew resurfacing the pavement along my street. No warning whatsoever and by the time I'd got up and dressed the crew were gone leaving only cones in front of drives and no info at all about how long to wait. So how long am I stuck in my house for, anybody know? I have things I need to do this afternoon that are not in walking distance (presume I can't walk on it either though) and I need to go to work at 7am tomorrow!

They should remove the cones once it is safe to drive/walk on. They should also have notified you though, contact the council and ask. It's not good at all

Notice generally isn't required unless it's stipulated as a term of the permit - I work in utilities and this is a commonly held belief that isn't always true. Most work we do isn't pre-noticed, and doesn't need to be. The only obligation is to have permission from the land owner (be it private or the council), anything outside of that amounts to courtesy rather than requirement. Not that it detracts from the hassle, it absolutely is a pain in the arse but it isn't usually a requirement to let residents know.

It really should be, I have a medical appointment this afternoon that I can't miss, it would have been no trouble at all to leave the car parked on the street to avoid this if I'd been informed.

It *can* be, as long as your local authority add it as a stipulation of the permit they grant but it isn't a flat out "you must do this" for each permit they grant, unfortunately. You should be fine later on to drive over it, but it might be worth having a chat with the permitting team at your local council and asking them to consider making it a requirement in future.

Thanks, I've submitted a complaint to the council about the lack of notice, probably won't make any difference but worth a try!

If it's tarseal then give it an hour and drive slowly to avoid the tar and stone splatter. If it's concrete it'll need 4-5 hours to be able to cope with the weight of a vehicle.

If they are still working in the area walk around to see if you can find them and ask.\ You can always contact the council directly via phone or on social media.

An hour or so, its asphalt so just needs to cool and it'll be thin if its a resurfacing job
