How has getting cosmetic dental work affected you?

I’ve made an appointment with my dentist to get composite bonding and I’m nervous but excited. On the one hand, I know I should just embrace my “unique” smile but on the other hand, I don’t even look in the mirror because of it!

Changed my smile, changed everything honestly

Honestly, I felt the same before mine, nervous but excited. It made a big difference in my confidence, and I stopped overthinking my smile so much. If it’s something that’s been bothering you, it’s okay to fix it.

I only had whitening but thought about bonding, teeth can genuinely have such a huge impact on your appearance. Just whitening has made me feel more confident. Just make sure you're not going to leave with turkey teeth.

Ive had braces, invisalign, composite bonding and now wanting a gum graft because my gums have receded

Ugh, I’ve had the worst time with this. I decided to get a veneer on one of my front teeth as it was a dead tooth that was crumbling away. The veneer would not stick at all. It would constantly fall off to the point where I’ve ended up getting a crown instead. It sucks because my other front tooth is going to need some work doing, but my dentist is telling me she will only do the composite route first instead of going straight to a crown. So I’ll have to go through the whole process all over again with this other tooth and she said they may even look a bit different as they will be done by different labs. Such a pain and I wish I hadn’t bothered. The crown sticks out and is super obvious to me and I’m still not happy with my smile. Down thousands and still not happy. 🤷♀️

I have had a similar experience to you. When one of my adult teeth grew through at the front, it was kind of deformed and looked like a vampire fang lol… Anyway as a teenager my dentist gave me a veneer which I thought looked great, I was really confident about my smile… However said veneer would pop off constantly, and so the dentist gave me a crown instead. The crown is functional and has served me well so I can’t complain. However I don’t like the look of it as much as the veneer, it doesn’t look as flush with the rest of the teeth and I feel like if anyone really looks at my teeth it’s obvious it’s not a natural tooth. I would also love to have my teeth whitened, but the crown complicates it as it then wouldn’t match the rest of the teeth.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been through the same thing. The first veneer they did for me was perfect, it looked so natural. But I ended up crunching down on it when it popped off and had to have a whole new one made. This happened a few times. They never looked as good as the first one after that 🥲 It really sucks and I have no idea what to do. Especially since I’ll need to do 2 more of my front teeth. I don’t want them to all look different 🥲

I got fixed braces, train track style, a few years ago (I'm 34). I have been self conscious about my teeth most of my life, and now I love them. Best thing I ever did.

I really wanted to get composite bonding, my dentist talked me out of it. I wanted my teeth whiter and with a bit more length, she said as much as she would like the money in her pocket from me, I’ve never had a filling before and my teeth are SO strong it would weaken them and I’d have to get them redone in 5-10 years which again would weaken them again.
I’m torn! For the cosmetic factor I’d like to go ahead but feel like she’s being sincere in her advice… I’d be interested to hear any long term composite bonding stories :)
Astropoppet@reddit
You can still get your teeth whitened though, surely? I understand not wanting to fuck with the structure but colour change is achievable, no?
LegsElevenses@reddit
Yes she said that! She said she’d advise just whitening them. I wanted to change the shape though 🤷🏼♀️
Astropoppet@reddit
I understand, maybe whitening will help you like them more. I've just been told I'm going to suffer nerve pain, from a new filling, until it gets much worse and then I can have a £1600 root canal and crown... There's good of them! So I genuinely wouldn't risk cosmetic work that in any way damages teeth (until they can properly regrow them.) Mouth pain is so debilitating
LegsElevenses@reddit
That sounds sore!!! And expensive 😵💫 yes I’m 35 and have never had a filling, the dentist said I am fortunate to have inherited “good “ teeth and she said some people need something done every time she checks them, I shouldn’t mess with what I’ve got for the sake of beauty….

I had Invisalign done in 2016 and then some composite bonding/whitening ahead of my wedding in 2021.
My teeth weren’t thaaat bad but honestly one of the best investments I’ve ever made. It improved my confidence so much and weirdly made me take care of them even more haha
All the best with your new smile!
BeingMundane9400@reddit
Do you need to wear anything at night to stop your teeth from going back to how they were, or is that not an issue?
sc33g11@reddit
I have the metal bar behind my teeth. They told me to wear a retainer as well and I literally never have! My teeth look the same and didn’t move even through pregnancy
bartzina@reddit
I got invisalign and composite bonding a couple years ago - it was very expensive and people always told me they didn’t notice my teeth so I wasn’t sure it’d be worth the money. But I am so so happy with the outcome, I actually smile in photos now and only wish I’d had it done sooner.
There is a case for embracing your uniqueness but there’s also nothing wrong with doing something for yourself that you know will give you a confidence boost!

I had Invisalign treatment, whitening, and composite bonding done on some damaged bottom teeth at the end. It is one of the best investments I have made - I smile all the time now and no longer feel self-conscious. Plus, my overall oral hygiene is so much better and easier to maintain now that my teeth are aligned.
Happy_Raspberry1984@reddit
I did Invisalign 10 years ago and it’s the best thing I’ve done for myself cosmetically. Sure, people told me all the time that they didn’t notice my crooked tooth but it was all I could see when I looked in the mirror.
Affectionate-Rule-98@reddit
I had composite bonding about 10 years ago as my canines were like fangs. It was some of the best money I’ve ever spent! So quick and it transformed my smile
_feedmeseymour@reddit
So many people will tell you others don’t notice your teeth, but if you’re like me, all you’ll think about for years is that they do.
I got composite bonding and whitening as it was less expensive than Invisalign. I still struggle with them not being straight and that they curve, but I’m still wayyyy happier than I was originally.
I’m 25, and put off getting my teeth fixed for a long time and it stopped me doing a lot of things I wanted to do. Get that bonding, and start your journey, because even the smallest change can make a big difference to people like us who have teeth insecurities :)

You’ll hear all different points of view on here and also in real life once you’ve had the procedure but at the end of the day, if it makes you happy and more confident, then it’s money well spent!
