I passed the former Children’s Palace store in my home town the other day and it had me thinking.

Child World was founded in 1962 in Massachusetts & Children's Palace was founded in Ohio in 1969. In 1975 Child World bought out all the Children's Palaces but kept the castle style of the stores. I had a Child World in my hometown that became a Toys R Us in 1992 when Child World went out of business.

We didn’t have a toys r us nearby and the mall was far away. So we had K-Mart, TG&Y or Sears. Sears was where my stepdad bought everything Nintendo for us. Back then electronic games were in the sporting goods section because they didn’t know where else to put them. Sears was an awesome place to go in the 80s in my home town because they had an ice cream parlor in the store. *memories*

We went to Toys R Us more often, but this or something like it I called "the castle store". Got my first bike and bike helmet there. I *think* that was where I got my little Love a Bye Baby dolls (w/wooden furniture). But Toys R Us had more variety and promoted greater independence. I mean, they had kid-sized bathrooms. I remember my first moment of leaving the public restroom alone and not bring able to immediately find my parents (crowded aisle) and figuring out what to do. First, stay put. They know where I'm supposed to be and ought to come looking before too long. Second, they should be close enough to hear me, though I can't see them, but how can I get their attention? This was freaking Toys R Us, *most* of the adults would turn to a kid calling for Mom or Dad. We hadn't talked about it, though we should've. What about names? Everybody hears their name, but I wasn't sure I said those enough for my parents to recognize me saying them. Ultimately, I went for a combo. Turned one way, called out, "Momma $Mom'sName!". Turned the other, "Daddy $Dad'sName!" And I waited for them to come. I was pretty proud of figuring that out at three or four. I felt cheated by the Toys R Us yellow step stool, though. (Still in the family, now painted deep brown.) "Step up to be tall." it said at the far edge. "Sit down to be small." My parents helped me read some of the words ("down" is hard), and having read it, I asked my parents if it was really true, if it could really do those things. I was skeptical that it could be true, but since I was assured, I was expecting some Alice in Wonderland step stool based magic, frankly. Very disappointed that the stool, while useful, had no actual effect on my size. What a way to learn if it sounds too good to be true... but I did learn it.

Mostly Hills, K-Mart or KB Toys. Though when we went to the outlet mall, in the grim basement level, my parents would take us to this place called Toy Liquidators.

The only Toys r Us was on the other side of the city so going there was more of a special treat. Most of the time if we went to a toy store it was KB in the local mall which was much closer to where we lived.

our town had a childrens palace instead of a toys r us and i couldn't have been saltier, but in reality everyone just went to kb toys at the mall

Easily both. Children’s Palace was epic. The closest one to us later became a Barnes and Noble/Borders and then it became a hospital. The Toys ‘R Us became a grocery store.

When I was a kid Children’s Palace and Toys R Us were basically right across the street from each other, so it was as convenient to be able to hit up both.

Did it have, like, a separate tunnel like entrance kids could go through? Or am I remembering a different store
View on Reddit #62666016

I think it did…or a least a smaller door. Unless I’m mixing it up with one of the nature/science stores that turned up in the mall later.

I vaguely remember going back and forth with my brothers in a carpeted, open oval doorway that you had to step up into 😅. We would go in on opposite sides and push past each other like a game.

Children's Palace was where we got a multitude of cheap stuffed animals. Toys R Us and Kaybee Toys are where I bought my video games and more typical action figures. They had very different video game selections, as Kaybee Toys would have the Tengen black carts, and the normal Ninty-licensed stuff was at Toys R Us (and Funcoland).

We grew up in a small town in central MN. Outta nowhere in the early 90's we got a gigantic outlet mall with like 20+ stores in it (it's currently still physically there with maybe 3 or 4 stores in operation, the rest has been vacant for probably 10+ years already). One of the stores was called #Toy #Liquidators. Whenever we got to go there it was like the holy grail of stores. But I'm pretty sure it was mostly made up of crappy stuff that didn't sell at real stores, and some off brand type stuff that you probably wouldn't have seen on TV or something (like when they used to advertise all the cool toys during Saturday morning cartoons). We were fairly poor so we didn't really care or know any better. We were just thrilled to get new toys of any kind. Haha.

It was called Child World around me in N.H. . I fondly remember going there to get Ninja Turtles, GI Joes, Real Ghostbusters etc… We got our Turbo GrafX 16 there and I remember the guy who got it for us looked at me and said “woah! You’re a lucky kid!” and I walked out of there simultaneously feeling awesome because I got a new game system and awesome what I then felt was an adult telling Me I’m lucky.

I loved it and was so sad when it closed down, but it made sense. There was a mall with KB right across the street and then a Toys R Us maybe a half mile away, plus it was tucked away in the back of a shopping center.

Children's Palace was our favorite! We only really started going to Toys R Us once the former closed. However, we also had a couple smaller stores in our malls we loved. I think they were called Toys Plus and Toys by Roy. I think it was the latter, but they would sometimes have these awesome toy displays in the front windows. A couple that come to mind include a giant Lego rocking horse and nutcracker. Totally awesome to see as a small child! It's a shame front window displays and toy stores in general aren't as common anymore.
