Cross Country Move from CA to TX - Recommendations?
Posted by ArtisticDataMonkey@reddit | askdfw | View on Reddit | 7 comments
Hi All,
We are moving from NoCal to DFW (Flowermound) next month and are trying to assess cost and timing expectations for a relocation from a 2 bedroom (ground floor) in NoCal to a one story house in DFW. Based on a rough estimate, the weight would be about 5,500-6,000 pounds. The total distance is about 1,720 miles.
My questions are as follows:
1) Any recommendations for reputable cross-country movers? (The ones we've found all have horrible reviews - the Moving sub didn't get any responses on this front)
2) We are being quoted about 9K, which seems super high (we moved from NY to CA 5 years ago, and paid 8K)
3) Is it standard for a 14-21 Day moving time?
Thanks so much!

Check out Later Neighbor Moving! They are a local Dallas company that does cross-country moves and have a stellar reputation! The owners are great

We moved from the Bay Area 8 years ago. Used Uhaul for transport. Got rid of anything we DIDN’T need.

For relocations I would go with either a pod type situation where you pack yourself or the true “big movers” (Allied, United, Mayflower, northern)
Do not use one of the ship/bid smaller movers unless you really do your due diligence. There are lots of scams in the industry, especially where they will pick up your good and then basically claim they were overweight and require huge fees before delivery. They will even load multiple loads on the truck and use total weight tickets to try to charge you for all of it. If you refuse, they I’ll threaten to take your possessions to auction. I’ve seen it happen to smart people - so because of this I like the control of a “self-pack pod” or stick with the big reputable moving companies.
As far as cost, there’s too many variables (out of Ca is generally more than into CA, size and weight, dates, etc). A lot will come and do a survey to get you a quote.

Uhaul pods is the correct answer.

I would use Uhaul Portable Storage or Pods.

I had a friend who moved often. He would go to UHaul and get the right size truck, etc. Ask the UHaul guys if they knew anyone who would load the truck for cash. Answer is almost always yes.
Drive loaded truck to destination. Ask local UHaul again or hire local moving company to unload.
