ULPT: Do your computering at church
Posted by nocsi@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 176 comments
If you don't have a denomination/church already, go and find one. Methodist is pretty good. It's like being a Costco member, lot of benefits. Some churches even offer snacks
So almost all churches offer free wifi to their members. What you can then do is hook up a raspberry pi somewhere and leave it running and have a VPN on it. Now you have a top-tier jump box. You can use the box as an exit to download whatever you want or a launching point to do whatever you want. You can up the game and hide a mining box at the church too. Just make sure to kick back some of the gains as donations to God's house.
Churches are also built with the highest priority zoning in the US and get access to the most reliable electricity and internet. The Church IT person is usually oblivious to anything. They're like a lower tier than the IT that works in public schools. Otherwise you can make friends with the pastor and let them know it's just a holy box you're doing spiritual research on if you're not in the business of hiding it. Some churches you don't even have to be a member of, I know all mormon churches share a common wifi password across all their churches. If you're downloading porn through that, it's not going to raise any flags since that's pretty normal traffic to them. Oh and don't feel bad about using religion as a cover for doing stuff. CIA does it all the time. Honestly most of the church infrastructure is unused except for Sundays, can't let a thing like that go to waste. Here's some ideas for what you can do:
- Torrent Seed Box
- VPN
- Jump box
- Crypto Miner
- Adult content
- AI Model Training
- Off-site storage
- Datacenter
- Web Scraping/Crawling
I haven't tested this out with mosques and stuff. Not sure I'd want to do that. But churches are a hacker's go to. Very reliable internet and electricity. Honestly there's a type of safety in knowing that your off-site backups are protected in God's house. I think the boldest of you can probably get away with trucking in an entire rack of servers and running a holy datacenter. Just make sure to kick back some to God's house. Oh and if you actually like the stuff in Church, feel free to actually attend. Stuffs pretty cool, people kinda don't go to church anymore
nwwy@reddit
Unless there is already a good sysadmin in the church who uses the infrastructure himself. If you do this in my church I will get a push message the moment you connect something to an Ethernet port or the WiFi. It’s all vlan tagged, segregated, and alerts on everything. Full unifi setup. Better docthisxib churches with shitty access points, old tech or where it’s clearly bad.
nocsi@reddit (OP)
You're not going to get any alerts if someone passively sniffs then eventually clones a device. Even better, you got unifi setup, I can vampire tap the poe and mitm. Don't act like you're covered cause you're running unifi, defensive people should always be scared
Rick-l-Sanchez@reddit
How easy is this to do?
nwwy@reddit
I don’t only get new devices connections, even reconnects of old devices. Could you elaborate Vampire tagging the Poe?
nocsi@reddit (OP)
I really love encountering people like you that are so confident in their networks. You'll get humbled real fast. The smarter ones are those that get too spooked when things are quiet
nwwy@reddit
Your scenario was to just simple hook up a raspberry to the network. Not full Blackhat this thing. And yes I’m confident to find a simple mystery box. Of course I’m not full equipped to deflect a really sofiatocated thing like a vampire tap.
You build a scenario and then get picky if someone plays by your rules. A full blown professional spy attack was not in your own scenario.
nocsi@reddit (OP)
Maybe learn to read, the scenario isn't even that. But lol I know you've never actually undergone any redteaming in your life or developed a network with any real significant defense. I'll just let you go around thinking running unifi with alerts is actually any significant security
nwwy@reddit
What would be a good plan to defend against your scenario? I’m willing to learn. :)
Rick-l-Sanchez@reddit
What are some easy ways to bypass Unifi (And similar software) alerts?
krenjayward@reddit
Wife of church IT guy here... they aren't oblivious and they aren't low tier either (at least not all of them 🤷♀️). Definitely not the department heads who went to school for their specialty so be careful not to cross the wrong guy just saying 😉 good luck 👍👏
Rick-l-Sanchez@reddit
How would we go about identifying the right it guy to mess with?
Nanocephalic@reddit
Gross, a church that extracts so much money that it has “department heads”.
That land could have been a gas station and it would have been less harmful.
krenjayward@reddit
I love thats what you took from my reply lol 😆 yes churches have staff members not sure why thats surprising when they operate 7 days a week including food pantry and homeless ministries but sure... we aren't a net positive in our community 🙄😏 love to know how you help your community? Cause if you don't you have no leg to stand on. I encourage you to look at the good churches do for communities if you can move beyond your bias

I suppose. But you have to pay to get in one. Where a church there is no monetary impact to just showing up and sitting in a pew. Well other than whatever you consider your per minute cost is.
nocsi@reddit (OP)
Any local coffee shop. The ranger hut on camp grounds. There's a ton of places you can be yoinking. It's really as easy as thinking where the intersection of lazy + stupid is. Maybe make a wiki and we can track it all as a global resource and make a network out of them. I still have a pi running in patagonia from like 2018.
Rick-l-Sanchez@reddit
There are open wifi finder apps that can help with this.

Comparing a church to a Costco membership is certainly something I didnt expect to see today

You can usually get cookies at church

Mine does coffee and donuts (and juice and choccy milk!) too!

Eh depends what church. I’m pretty sure the Unitarians have plan b and at least cookies.

Crypto miner will stick out like a sore thumb with its electricity usage and they are also very loud. Even if their IT is completely incompetent they’ll notice when their electricity bill doubles. Some people have tried that and got caught pretty quickly.
AI model training - you’d have to be willing to leave tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment there.
Jump box - maybe, but if you’re committing a crime the jump box at the local church is enough to narrow down the suspects to people who attend that church.
cybersynn@reddit
There are a couple things involved? Right? OPSEC? Why give the church your real name for one? Two, if you have the knowledge and skill, putting in protocols to wipe the data is not unheard of. Or something to physically destroy the raspberry pi once found. Three, what do I care about the electricity bill if I am doing something illegal and am not part of the organization?
But ya, if your ethics and morals are questionable(or not questionable, but you are just creative), you can join dozens if not hundreds of churches across a region. Make your own little TOR network. Hide a raspberry pi inside a hollowed out bible or book of hymns. Have a discrete wire hidden to a plug. Put it in some back room. On top of some shelf. In the attic.
0xmerp@reddit
Why bother at all? You dont need to run your own Tor nodes to use the Tor network, in fact doing so is just a way to get unwanted attention.
For a crypto miner you’d care about electric use because it’s how you get caught very quickly, then once you’re caught your equipment investment is burnt.
cybersynn@reddit
There is that. Of course. You are not wrong.
sauberflute@reddit
I wouldn't try anything in a mosque, the FBI watches them pretty closely.

walrus_breath@reddit
What kinds of costco benefits are we talkin here.
Justout133@reddit
But like... You would need to dedicate a significant amount of time actually attending the church before they trusted you.
"Hey man I know I just joined less than a month ago, nobody here really knows me, and I show up once a week maybe, but can I hook up this electric device to your internet box? It's for holy research or whatever."
And if you do it discretely, we eventually that level 0 IT tech guy will scratch his head about it and unplug it, or when Spectrum/Verizon/whoever invariably gets called in for some inane repair or diagnostic, they'll immediately find and disable it.
phflopti@reddit
What kind of churches have you got?
I've always used random churches when I need a toilet urgently, because you can usually just wander in and the attached community rooms will have a nice clean toilet.
Also, I know the WiFi password at my local methodist church is 'JESUSISLORD' because they have signs up. I don't go there for church things but they do have community events.
Justout133@reddit
Yeah but... A visitor using a restroom and a visitor fucking around with the internet and attaching a device to a setup are not quite the same level of implicit trust. Unless you are affiliated with their tech support there is no reason anyone of sound mind would let you randomly attach a device umquestioningly. The next time something is wrong with the internet, the first thing that will be asked is, what's all this extra stuff and this mystery device? Everyone is right that they wouldn't care much or know what it is in a million years, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that someone setting up a device to your paid-for internet has personal gains in mind.
F6Collections@reddit
All you’d need to do is go to the bathroom, hide a device with a battery pack in the drop ceiling, put in the WiFi and leave.
DanCoco@reddit
Churches love to exploit free labor. Just a wee bit more social engineering over "imma hide this holy box over here" is all it takes.
The ISP tech isn't going to touch it, especially if it isn't even using ethernet. They don't care that much and won't want to open up the "but you broke my network" can of worms. Make the network pile a proper ball of tech spaghetti to intimidate anyone into not touching it.
Or do better to hide it. Maybe "donate" a wireless printer to them. Build the rpi into the case and put a keystone rj45 on it.
donotlookatmeee@reddit

CuteCanary@reddit
::points at the crucifix:: Jesus did it!!
senraku@reddit
you've actually described how the real theology works. Sin has a price: death. Somebody's gotta pay. Old testament Jews had a code of animals to sacrifice to pay for it with an exchange rate. Jesus changed it by being a living human/God sacrifice and takes all the sins you confess to him back in time to pay for them at the cross The sins you commit, past present and future now are then directly attributed to Christ as if he's done them and has already paid for them. So God looks down at you and says who did that? You point to the cross and say Jesus did

You laugh but… I am in a band that practices in a church that one of our members works at. Over the course of four years, as a non-Christian, they have recruited me to volunteer as an IT architect, sound engineer, videographer, emcee, and a handful of other odd-jobs. I have a fob to their building, passwords to basically everything and I could probably walk on premise at any hour without anyone thinking anything of it.
Only problem is that their internet SUCKS. Like, I didn’t even know Internet that bad exists in 2025, 30 minutes outside a major US city in a very posh suburb… Also, admittedly, they’re all really great people and I’d hate to abuse their trust in me, but since this is ULPT, if this what you’re about, it’s very easy to worm your way into a church’s good graces by showing up for volunteer events and just mingling with people in positions of authority. There’s a general naivety about bad actors in their circles and I’ve had to, on many occasions, prevent them from falling into scams… Absolute gold mine for some y’all.

As a former parish secretary at an Episcopal church, I am laughing my ass off at the idea that we had premium anything. Our WiFi was only turned on when people were there on Sunday and when the gaming club met one every three months and trucked all their computers in. We only had WiFi because they paid for it. I tried to get them to modernize but their computers were still running Windows 95 when they closed down. Half the time the phones were out because raccoons chewed through the wires. We didn’t have air conditioning. The idea that someone could plant any of the equipment you listed without someone noticing is pretty ludicrous. Maybe you lucked out and found a particularly ignorant bunch.
beerstein_cock@reddit
A small raspberry pi in a small enclosure connected to the wifi could be hidden just about anywhere there is a half decent signal with an outlet nearby. And given that many churches more than 50 years old are attached to pretty big complexes with many additions added over the years, it really isn't very hard to hide something like that. I spend time in a church that I am not a member of because of a community group that I'm involved with. I'm sure I could plug in a small box the size of a paperback somewhere in there and it would be undisturbed for months to years. Especially in their AV closet
MajorAcer@reddit
Yes because as we all know, your particular experience is universal.
zelda_moom@reddit
Never said it was. However, my experience is that large mega churches have oodles of cash to splash out on good internet but small churches usually are scraping by. They are often in older buildings that cost the earth to heat and their members are usually on the back side of 40 or 50, usually older than that. One reason our church shut down was because of attrition. In addition, Christianity in general is undergoing a steep decline. Large churches may be better targets for OPs plan but they also may have better IT support. So I don’t know how well his plan would work. YMMV
Mudlark_2910@reddit
I'm really curious as to why there's this hesitation. Can anyone suggest a reason? Is this an American thing?
BigDaddySteve999@reddit
Either OP is racist/culturist/Islamophobic, or assumes it would be harder to blend in. As a white American who fake-converted to Islam and knows the culture and rituals, it would be hard for someone with no prior experience to blend in at a mosque. If you're black and you go to a Nation of Islam mosque, it might be easy. But if I were to go to basic Arab/Desi mosque without my wife or in-laws, I would have to prep a little first.
fhuxy@reddit
Muslim here! Not a single one of us would “quiz” you but you can expect armed security at every mosque these days. All are welcome but suspicious behavior is immediately noticed and investigated and we have strong ties with local police. The sheriff (LA Metro area) spoke to our congregation just yesterday re: how to deal with ICE, for example. They are on speed dial and regularly patrol. What’s funny tho, is you can absolutely forget about tampering with our networks. The demographic of Muslims = IT / sys admin / devs lol. Not a chance.

nocsi@reddit (OP)
Yea those places aren't even really churches. They're like the WWE of Christianity. Built like an entertainment arena. If you're targeting those types of things, you might as well go after actual sports arenas. The basis of all this is it being a funny human story about blackhatting getting the attention of a holy leader. Then the holy leader takes it as an opportunity to help the blackhat turn a new leaf. You know the hacker hacks through the church, in turn the holy leader reverse spiritually hacks the hackers soul.

Now that you bring it up, why don’t churches offer health insurance? A megachurch with 10,000 members could negotiate a sweet insurance plan for parishioners. The Catholic Church has millions of members in America alone. They could offer insurance and operate their own hospitals.

The Catholic Church has hundreds of hospitals already. By and large they lose money and are closing rapidly.

redthump@reddit
While I have no objection to this morally or ethically. You should know what laws you're breaking. That means knowing a loss for your location. In Texas, it could easily be considered theft of service from a 501c3. If I recall correctly, that escalates any crime dramatically. You're also in the Bible Belt, so you can expect that any plea deal is going to suck because any jury is going to hang you. Also, I wouldn't be worried so much about the church's it guy. I'd be worried about the script kitties in the congregation mapping the network and finding your box while trying to hack into that bitch Carol Ann's Facebook because she's been such a bitch lately.

I know a guy who got into crypto mining and had around 30-40 mining rigs, but didn't want to pay the bill for electricity. He had connections at his old high school, and just gave kickbacks to the head maintenance guy, and they were just put in a storage closet in the maintenance building that was separated from the school buildings, so nobody ever went in there. He did it over summer when nobody was around and hard wired them, so even if the WiFi went down, it wouldn't affect him. The maintenance building never lost power, so he just automated everything and nobody figured it out for years. He finally got to a point where he had made enough money and went in and disconnected them during the summer.
TitanWet@reddit
Agreed the church IT guy is usually a retired guy "good with computers from the 2000s".
Bonus points for hiding the box. Most churchs have a printer and they never move it and are almost always connected ethernet. If the printer has a finisher(for booklet making or stapled sets) there are usually an inside cubby with lots of space.
Also, there server closets are a complete mess most of the time, easy to "offer to clean" or "organize".
