Couple thoughts: 1. Dude seemed pretty casual about the 20 grand from the Big Lebowski, this was far from the first time Dude has gotten substantial money from nontraditional sources. 2. Dude understands the value of personal relationships. He didn't pay his rent on time, but he said he would go his landlord's cycle and give notes...and followed through. He really just fits right in there, in Los Angeles. Don't know why he has to use so many cuss words though.

My own head cannon: The Dude actually served in the military, just not with Walter. The Dude saw combat and Walter didn't. This lead to The Dude getting disability, and decided to live as far away from a military structured life as he could. Also helping to explain his agitation of Walter's consistent posturing.

He doesn’t seem physically impaired but it’s possible he either defrauded the welfare office or has a significant case of PTSD or anxiety disorder that prevents him from working. I also wouldn’t be shocked if his parents were wealthy and he actually had a significant trust fund (his “accountant” might be real). But he can only access a certain amount. With him sharing a last name with Big Lebowski, I bet there’s family money going back a few generations. BL is probably his third cousin or something. Although that makes him banging Maude kinda…hmm… kinda lost my train of thought…

Yeah that's what I've always though, he reminds me of a few people I know who have taken a moderate inheritance or settlement and managed to kind of live off of it even though it's not a life-changing amount of money. They held jobs off an on but nothing steady, they'd quit any job they didn't like because they knew they could survive for a while until they found another.
