There’s a Greyhound rescue near us that does just that. They’re quite relaxed about it - just turn up, pick a dog and off you pop.

That sounds great, I wonder how it'll go considering I work about the city most days

Weekend walks - think of it as respite care for the family and the dogs xxx

Any legitimate animal shelter will not allow a person to walk in off the street and assist in walking the dogs. The shelter would have to vet the person first to make sure they are the right person because a lot of dogs in animal shelters are untrained and it would need a very strong willed person to be able to control them. Remember there are always other people out there who like to walk dogs and as such they have already volunteered at a dog shelter so they can end up being a dog walker. These people will be extremely angry if the shelter let's you walk in off the street to assist with walking the dogs when there will be people in there who have worked for months waiting for their chance to walk the dogs.

The RSPCA has volunteer dog socialisers, you certainly don't have to 'work for months' for a chance to walk a dog - you sign up, do a training day and then you can get yourself on the rota for whenever you like. Dogs are often grouped by their needs and many (if not most) are trained and easy for any one to walk. - ex animal socialiser for the RSPCA

There are LOADS of rescues/shelters. You need to look at much smaller scale ones - RSPCA, Dogs Trust etc have staff and fewer volunteers. Small rescues pretty much rely on those giving their time freely A few near me allow company days where businesses bring staff for a day out of volunteering - mainly walking dogs.

I think most will be glad of the help but you'll have to properly register first and probably be supervised for a while. I used to volunteer at RSPCA. I started just mucking-out cages but was given more responsibility (including dog walking) as time went on

See if any Cinnamon Trust in your area - they work by keeping dogs in their homes but supporting their often aged or disabled owners. So if you have a dog and are housebound, people can be vetted by the Trust as suitable to take your dog out for a walk.

People doing that for my MiL was a saving grace to her and it stops dogs going in rescue when they are otherwise being perfectly well looked after.

Yes I’ve done this but I was traumatised by it as I then worried about them constantly 🐶💖 lots of people go and walk the dogs though.
