What is it like in a hmo and with foreign students?

My friend's experience ATM is the house is lovely. However one or two people do most of the mess. Everyone takes a week each to clean and when it's his turn he hates it because he's literally seen the same toilet stain week in week out for a month and if it's not gone they'll all point at him . The other is the kitchen one guy uses a lot and then the foreign students blame him for some reason- he literally boils eggs(peels in his bedroom) and microwaves everything and bakes and throws rubbish straight outside in the bin but still manages to get the blame So he's thinking of leaving and I'm thinking of joining him as that experience does not appeal to me

Being in a HMO you will signed/agreed to a tenant agreement. If there is no tenant agreement they you are screwed basically because it's going to your friends words against that of the foreign students who will not doubt gang up on him to say it's his fault BUT..if there is a tenant agreement that read what it says about cleaning up an making a mess because if the foreign students are making a mess then they could be in breach of the tenant agreement which means you would need to contact the landlord to get the situation resolved. If the landlord cannot be bothered then unfortunately you'll have no choice but to leave and find somewhere else.

It's not in an agreement but it's the suggestion of the landlord and preference of some housemates which is fine but the point is some don't clean, they themselves make a mess and then have tantrums when they have to do their fair share because the my friend doesn't see it as equal so does nothing more than a basic job in his words

I can tell you from long experience that getting them to take turns doesn't work at all. The landlord either needs to pay for a cleaner to do the public areas, or discount one tenants rent to get it cleaned. There are always people who dont pull their weight. Also, for any rota you need to fix it so each person has one job so you can identify who doesn't do theirs.

That's true. It would be better for the landlord to charge each person £15 a month and get a cleaner in twice a month. Also better to give one person a discount to clean it. I'm leaving anyway now. I just think I'm living with kids

If you have no written agreement then you have two options. Inform the landlord that the other tenants are not complying with the landlords 'preference' or just leave.

I lived in a HMO with three foreign students (dont want to say what ethnicity before reddit babies cry racist) and their lack of cleaning was disgusting. The other housemates stayed away as much as possible because they would leave so much mess. They would literally live around flies and maggots, and when they opened their door to me once 2 rats flew out of it. After a while I threw all their dirty insect-infested food and cutlery away. They were outraged then they went ahead and left more mess, so I threw all their cutlery away again. The owner of the property was the same ethnicity as the students and blamed me, taking my deposit away. Maybe others have better stories but be careful before jumping into a HMO with people from different cultures who have different, uh, views about hygiene.

I'm from a different culture too but British born and I think some are just students are just spoilt. Would any of our parents spend £30-100k on us being average academic talent? But they just seem to think they shouldn't have to slave so hard because I should have done the lions share the week before and of them not a British born has the same background as me abroad and I know he's the one with the tantrum as he'll never have lifted a finger in his life . My cousins are all the same
