Am I crazy for wanting to go from a 12900k to a 9800X3D?

I have a 12900k with DDR4 memory and I notice some hitching/stuttering in games in scenes that don't seem necessarily graphically demanding but where there is a lot going on (such as a lot of objects, loading parts of a map like in Halo Infinite's campaign) and I find that my 12900k is just difficult to cool and thermal throttles easily in games. I changed the thermal paste a month ago and it made quite the difference as before I was on Thermalgrizzly Kyronaut which degraded to the point where the CPU could only maintain 197 watts and now can maintain 220W). I have a Noctua NH-D15, no contact frame because I don't want to mess with them due to the risk of accidentally bending some pins or having to screw it in just right because otherwise the PC may not boot or be unstable.
I feel like a 9800X3D would be easier to deal with because it runs cooler and would be easier to cool due to the lower power demands and not having a bending problem and I don't really care about productivity tasks anymore (which the 12900k would supposedly have an advantage) because I don't do any rendering tasks anymore. Could such an upgrade make sense?
TheSpiral718@reddit
Nope. I just did it. 300fps in bf6 on low, 250fps epic settings. Im running a 5070ti though and ram is cl30-36-46-77 @32gb. Formerly running a 12900k that reached 130-150 epic settings, 200 low. Can feel the upgrade with my 240hz oled.
Commander-S_Chabowy@reddit
I went from 12600kf to 7800x3d and there is a notable difference especially in cup bounded games like gachas, esport and simulators
bboyka17@reddit
I have a 12600k currently with a 5070 and battlefield 6 has been giving me some grief with high cpu usage and sub par frames and stutters so I picked up a 7800x3d ($279) and a gigabyte b650e($120) but will be using only 16gb of ddr5. Im still within my return windows and haven’t even opened boxes but I’m getting cold feet if all the money I spent is even going to be worth it. Could you tell me it’s worth it or if I should get my money back ? Lol
Zealousideal_Bid1232@reddit
If you don’t have a 5080 or 5090 you probably wouldn’t notice a difference
burncell@reddit
Funny that you say this, I currently use a 12900k with a 5090, And boy, it's not working out,
man It's just not working well together, Even just in desktop, I have to crank the Cpu to constant high boost, Just to make the ridiculous latency dips stop... in just desktop doing nothing,
I tried everything, so I will go all in, I will buy the rest of the parts I didn't buy when I bought the 5090.
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
Something else going a miss here for sure, thermals or something. I use a 12900K and 5090 setup and it's absolutely fine for gaming.
burncell@reddit
After fiddling with some things, I managed to stop the latency dips in desktop But not ingame,
Can I ask in what resolution you play and what FPS you normally get?
Also, what motherbord do you use?
What games do you play to see those results? Do you have HDR?
what's your 1% lows?
Do you use G-sync? Also, has your monitor native G-sync or Free-sync that supports G-sync,
DisplayPort or HDMI (weird question, i know)
Ram specs 👓 and widows version like 23h2 or 24h2?
Man, that's a lot of questions, sorry but I really want to find out what it seems to be,
You would help me greatly by giving me something to compare it with.
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
I'm travelling at the moment and I'll update with more details tomorrow but figured I'd answer some of your questions now when I've seen the reply.
I play predominantly at 3440x1440 on an Alienware AW3423DWF refresh rate is 165hz and I target 158hz using DLSS/DLAA and FG. I know alot of ppl shit on these technologies but I don't really see the downsides to them. I mostly play single player RPG type games, most recently I've been playing Forza Horizon 5, Spiderman 2, Ninja Gaiden Black 2, Returnal and The Last of Us part 1.
I also use an older non HDR non OLED 4K monitor but I can't remember the make/model right now but I only use this for games with no ultrawide support, it's a backup essentially.
Yes I have OLED and HDR. Memory is Corsair Vengeance 5600 C36 Motherboard is Asus Z690-F Monitor uses Free sync but I apply G sync in NCP for full screen.
Regards FPS I'll post proper figures instead of guesses from memory later but I only occasionally check FPS when I can feel drops and that's very rare since I got my 5090.
burncell@reddit
Thanks, man, I was actually hoping you had a Z790 or higher model motherboard because I suspected that was part of the problem,
But you got the exact same model as I use, And I think even the same memory as well,
DisplayPort , Oled + HDR, bios, drivers, Windows 11 all updated or the same things i use,
So, that is a lot of things I can scratch off the list of potential problems in one sweep,
That's great man, it will save me a LOT of time,
Things I have different than you: 5k2k ultrawide 165hz LG, and that's it, basically
It has the same tech inside as yours,
A side note, I have a buddy who also got a 12900k, has a 4090 Gpu, playing on 4k
Also, not a single problem,
The cooling isn't the problem, Ram tests are good, Completely changed all cables for the highest quality, 1300 watts power unit, bought it alongside the 5090,
It has every protection system in it + a connection for a 5090 cable (the right one)
Its a darn difficult puzzle..
What i did to fix the desktop dips,
I used several things that accumulated in a improvement, but the biggest thing that worked (for desktop) was simply putting the power setting in windows to ultimate performance, (With some tweaks) in the power plan
That made the Cpu boost to a higher clock speed and stay there, even when doing nothing,
I have tried everything under the sun in Bios, windows and nividia control panel,
I also disabled or enabled every driver in device management,
Same thing in Services and Features,
I feel i need to nuke this problem from orbit and start with more drastic measures,
But at least I have a list of things I no longer have to check,
Thanks for the effort man.
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
No problem at all.
That's odd also as I've never had to use 'prefer maximum performance' type settings for either GPU or CPU.
If thermals are all good I'm kinda stumped too, I assume you used a fresh windows install. Far as I'm aware only the 13 and 14 gen Intel's had freak performance issues.
I had a 4090 prior to my 5090 also and that worked great too.
Only game I've had real stutter issues with in recent years was Hogwarts Legacy, everything else has been good.
I will give you some performance metrics tomorrow when I get a chance. Is there a particular game your interested in knowing? Are you more interested in 4k performance, since the lesser 3440x1440 res would be more CPU relative. I've a reasonable size steam library so I could possibly have it.
burncell@reddit
It's the first time for me as well that I have used maximum performance,
It's not a good setting to have set, especially if it's only for desktop,
4k is more in the range of my setup, so that would be my preference,
After some more testing, I have found out that some games have way less stuttering, or non at all in 1 game,
F1 Formula race game had no stuttering at all,
No man's sky was really playable despite some small stutter,
Helldivers 2 terrible stuttering,
Warhammer DarkTide had the same terrible stuttering,
The game i mainly tested all my settings on was DarkTide,
I think it's 2 different stutters at the same time,
A consistent microstutter (smoothness) And an interval of massive fps dips in 1% lows only
So, high fps in regular Fps statistic Also, it is high in 1% lows, but that dips constantly 40,50, and 60 frame dips,
And here is the kicker, It won't matter if I set my settings ingame to extreme or at its lowest,
Sure, there are some improvements, but it's dipping Like crazy still,
Same crazy stuff with G-sync, If i turn it off, it's also smoother it's not completely fixed, But it gives an improvement all the same,
But its possible that G-sync can't handle the depth of the 1% dips as g sync needs a minimum of 40 fps if I remember, or its simply to big of a dip to compensate for,
I haven't tested more games yet because i deleted everything and all programs and only kept the essentials for testing,
I even turned off Windows Defender and Firewall at some point,
I disabled parts of the pc, hardware drivers for parts thats not needed,
Disabled services thats not needed,
I only use and have M.2 disks
I can install more games for testing, but I felt it won't help pin the problem as I already have 2,5 games that showed the issue, It would've only shown what games run bad or good,
No anti virus, not a single program running in the background of the exception of steam + game and latencyMon,
Now I am just wondering if I had the same dips, but way smaller when I used the 3080ti in my pc? I also used a 2k monitor at that point,
Making the problem even less noticeable,
The 3080ti couldn't smash that many fps to begin with, so the dips would be less likely to be seen,
I also never used LatancyMon before my issues with my 5090,
Well, at least I know it's not the pc parts' lack of strength,
I have spent the last 2.5 weeks trying everything in the book of potential fixes,
I think the last page says "you're fucked"
I have thrown in the big guns, And bought a new
Motherboard combined with an AMD 9950x3d And some modest 65GB 28 lc Ram
If some part of the pc was secretly dying or dysfunctional it will not matter anymore,
now I have a completely new pc to build, I will find out if its fixed soon,
I will rebuild the "old" pc aswell and test it with my 3080ti as I don't like unsolved mysteries,
But this way I will at least have an working pc in the meantime + an spare if the 5090 goes boom💥
Thanks for the helping hands I will update you if I have ..mmm ..well and update to give ;)
If you are interested in the aftermath.
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
Please do update. Hopefully you can solve the problem at some point also as every so often I add a 9800x3d and MB to cart then decide against it cos I'm just not sure I'll really get my money's worth improvement with it. I feel I'd be best waiting.
I do have Helldivers 2 I can test in 4k and give you FPS and 1% numbers but from memory the 12900k and 5090 breezed that game and it felt very smooth always. I'll update Sunday.
Hope your problems are solved. Big spend but now you've the basically the best of the best setup.
burncell@reddit
I just found a new possible reason as to why it happened, I don't have the possibility to test it yet,
But apparently the Samsung 990 M.2 modules are dying within months of use sometimes,
And people report the same symptoms as i have when they do are slowly dying 🐌,
And I bought one months ago.... Well, at this point its a theory
But I will test it as soon I have my new pc parts installed,
I would love to see the Helldivers 2 fps results I will install it on the new setup and will send you my new results aswell,
I think i can set my monitor to 4k so we have a better comparison,
Maybe it will make your decision to upgrade or not easier for you,
I will update you when I know more, 🕵🏻
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
Hi, So I tested out Helldivers 2 and have some FPS numbers to compare. There's no in-game benchmark unfortunately but I played a couple of maps playing at 4k native in max settings with the A-compute or whatever it's called setting at the bottom of the settings at both yes and No separately (it didn't seem to make a difference).
Overall the FPS largely averaged in the 120 to 130 region and the 1% low was most often in the 70-80 region. GPU power around the 500w mark, highest I seen was 525 ISH.
Although it felt smooth and I had no complaints I expected higher results to be honest. So checked some YouTube 4k max settings vids and was seeing results averaging in the 140-150 FPS range with 9800X3D. So I'm losing a little performance by the looks.
burncell@reddit
Well, i have some good news for you and some bad news,
I seem to have fixed the problem at my end by Reinstalling windows + installing drivers straight from the source,
And i disabled some drivers that were making trouble, So it wasn't my m.2 ssd disks,
I still need to buy a new Cpu cooler to test my "old" pc, but that's for later,
That's my good news, Onwards to the bad news
Your pc has a bottleneck, When I put the resolution to 4k, at native, everything max
I maxed out at my 165 refresh rate with 1% lows rolling between 95 to 100, it will go way higher if I disable g sync and v sync
Granted, I have a 9950x3d, but you have probably noticed that your GPU is working at around 65% of his potential,
Atleast thats what is happening in my game,
I use nividia statistics overlay advanced
It will show how much % your GPU has to work,
On to potential good news for you, Helldivers 2 has no DLSS or DLAA or frame gen,
Well, that's not the good news, but the 50 series has something called "Smooth Motion"
And low latency settings you can try out,
Start the Nividia's New and improved "nividia APP" Select : graphics
Select Helldivers 2 by program settings, NOT global settings
Don't press the green button "optimize" It sucks,
Below, you will see
Ingame settings - current value - preview value, We are getting close,
Scroll down, You will see "Driver Settings"
Because we selected -program settings- and then helldivers 2
It will only apply to ...Well.. Helldivers 2
Change these settings:
Smooth Motion (on)
Low latency mode (ultra)
if you can't change it, leave it It's probably turned on by smooth motion,
Vertical sync (fast)
That's it, Try it out, i want to know how much it has changed for you with these settings,
Set these settings to all games that's not supporting DLss and frame gen,
Unless it's already going ham with the fps then you don't need it,
Actually, some people prefer Smooth motion over frame gen,
Sometimes its just working better than frame gen in some games,
Although it's what people say 🤷 I just found the setting like yesterday,
I am curious about the results ;)
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
I'm already using ultra latency mode in NCP.
Thanks for posting results, it's a big difference. This is definitely set at 4k and also rendering at native setting?
I only ask because that is even beyond the YouTube vid benchmarks I've seen which are at 99% 5090 utilisation.
When I was playing at the maximum settings I could GPU utilisation was 98%
Again I've had 9800x3d and MB combo in my basket I think I will order tomorrow and just sell the 12900K and be done with it though :)
Which 5090 model do you have? Mine is the Palit gamerock as it was all I could get my hands on at release.
burncell@reddit
Now, I am going to double-check for extra safety,
But try Smooth motion it will help you out It doesn't no matter if you have the 5090,
Do you use 3840x2160 or 3440x1440?
I have tested it with 3440x1440,
My desktop settings are set to 3440x1440 Ingame the same resolution Set to Native render scale Turned off Smooth Motion
I have hardware acceleration GPU Scheduling ON in windows,
I turned on VSync Its just better for gaming,
! It will cap the frames to the max frame rate set by your monitor !
But I don't leave the ship, it's a more constant environment for testing dips,
Also in nividia the settings are not going to screw with the resolution
I even turned off screen scaling so my screen got smaller Result are: 165 fps capped by VSync 1% lows : 100 to 130 range (walking made it go to 85) GPU at 70% 330 watt 🔋
But I don't see how this difference between us is even possible. A new Processor won't make your GPU work less somehow, at least I think so,
At 3840x2160
My Gpu went to 97% do you use this resolution? Because then we are not so far apart with the GPU utility %
Standing still with character Fps 162 1% lows 82 455 watt power draw
I wonder if the youtubers used supersampeling or not, Its going to be asking more from the Gpu
I myself like to use supersampling, not ultra sampling aswell,
It will make the game look better, but I tested everything on native so no worries.
Don't make haste with making the decision, it might only help with 1% lows, so it has to be worth it
Normally, if a cpu isn't fast enough, the gpu has to do less not more,
Because it has to wait for the 🐌 cpu.
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
The results I posted earlier was at 3840 x 2160 in game in a map whilst playing the game, the results just in the ship alone were alot higher.
The videos I checked on YouTube for comparison just used native 4k also, all other settings were full.
I can't recall if I have smooth motion enabled already but will check later. Thanks.
Please try playing a map in game and see if the FPS is a bit lowered.
burncell@reddit
Ah 3840 x 2160, that makes more sense as to why the differences were so far apart,
I have the 5090 astral from Asus, the one with the watercooler stuck to it,
But the differences would be minimal between us unless you have one with missing cuda cores, But I doubt that,
I measured at a lower res than you, My GPU went to 97% workload at the same resolution as you
I have everything stock, No undervolting or even set the RAM clock above stock,
I was testing settings in Bios and just set it to stock for our comparison
I will test it on a map I will have the results in a few hours,
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
Thanks that'd be much appreciated. If it's not a big hassle could you record approx FPS figures for both 3840x2160 and 3440x1440 in a map for a rough average and 1% lows. Just running around the map for a few minutes and getting a feel for the average FPS is enough thanks.
I do most of my gaming on the OLED at 3440x1440 so this is where I'd be most interested in gains from a 9800X3D (which I believe the 9950X3D gaming performance is very close to).
burncell@reddit
Thanks man, i went all in,
I bought an LG 5k2k monitor... but thats really tough on the GPU, So, i needed the best to make gaming smooth again,
I would suggest that you pick the 9800x3d if you have already decided to buy a new CPU
If you only play games or do very little work on the pc The 9800 will be way more stable than the 9950
The 9950 has some issues with games, apparently when utilizing the wrong cores or something,
I simply did not have enough time with it to test it out yet, but thats what people report on reddit so far,
Its going to take a bit longer to test the ingame FPS out, I have some extra work unfortunately to do first.
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
No rush at all just when you can it would be greatly appreciated. Nothing too taxing in terms of FPS tests just a couple mins running around the map in general and approx average FPS ballpark like 150-160fps and 1% low 100-120 for example.
It would be the 9800X3D I would go for as this pc is just for gaming now. I just wanna ensure before spending the ~£700 that there's a decent amount of gain at 3440x1440 to be had. Im leaning toward leaving it for now cos I'm not unhappy with the setup but I would like to make the most of my 5090 purchase too. I'm torn :)
burncell@reddit
I got the results from walking on a planet, I have set my RAM on exo 2, Making my RAM work at 6000 something,
Everyone needs to do that anyway for making the RAM module work at the speeds it was presented at,
At 3440x1440 No V-sync turned on, If I didn't do that, it would not go above 165, Also turned off Smooth Motion At native
171 fps 1% lows 148,
120 fps 1% lows 80, (i didn't see the dip though)
120 fps, lows 1% 90, (again i just didn't see it) It probably was a micro dip or something 🤔
I never played helldivers 2 so damm Smooth 🤷
Even in small battles around 157, lows 131 140, lows 90,
But still, it was movie Smooth, I never played this Smooth,
3840x2160 140 fps, lows 130,
130 fps, lows 120,
Micro dips lows 115, 80,
Rolls like a smooth ride aswell, Its just great, man,
I noticed the frames were more constant than at 3440x1440,
It won't matter much if you get more enemies in your presence around you too,
It was just more stable than at lower res, It was kinde surprising,
I think with the right Bios settings, I would get even a better framerate,
But all this is basically at stock settings, I hope you got the results you're hoping for.
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
Thanks for taking the time to update, More so to put my mind at rest as these results don't differ enough from my own tbh, there's a bit of an improvement in 1% lows but not a large amount. I don't feel any dip when playing either. Glad that's us both happy :) Hope you manage to get your other system sorted also. Thanks again man.
burncell@reddit
Dude, you helped me first, so I am glad I could return the favor,
I spent 2 weeks trying to fix it, And way too much money,
But I learned stuff and got a better system in the progress,
So it's not all bad,
Have a good one, good sir
P.S. Don't forget about Smooth Motion 😉
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
Checked it last night and I must have enabled smooth motion already, last time I did a Nvidia driver update.
Yep that's one monster system you have now!
burncell@reddit
Haha, if you already turned it on, then you have to do the test again without smooth motion 🤣
Its basically frame gen, This way, you will truly see the difference between our systems,
I turned it off when I tested my Fps,
P.s Indeed, he is, Its PC name is : ROG-APEX, A fitting name, don't you think?
The motherboard is a ROG Apex, so it's only natural to call him by its own title 😉
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
Weird, I was doubting myself whether I'd turned it on or off last night but to be sure I installed today's new Nvidia driver and at defaults without vsync etc. Helldivers 2, 3440x1440 all settings ultra FPS was steadily in the 200s in game on the map running around and lows were 130-140. I'll leave this to rest here as satisfied with our setups.
Oh yeah very fitting name, mines is Skynet and every system I'm ever owned was also Skynet 😂
burncell@reddit
Wait, wasn't Skynet trying to kill Connor? 😅 have fun killing Bots,
See you around reddit and have fun mate.
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
Haha yeah that's it.
You too mate, enjoy 👍🏻
Stunning-Corner-2922@reddit
So I went for a 9800X3D in the end. There is a difference in the lows and it feels overall marginally better overall. But what's really noticeable for me is how much more efficient it is compared to the 12900K with the 360mm aio it stays way cooler. Don't regret or advise on the change tbh. It's a pretty big cost for a little difference but I've peace of mind I'm getting the most outta my 5090 now :)
Elitefuture@reddit
Depends on the game, common misconception that a set of parts = no bottlenecks for all games. There will always be a bottleneck, the game decides which part becomes the bottleneck.
Most esports titles = CPU bottleneck in most rigs
Most AAA titles = GPU bottleneck in most rigs
There are ofc exceptions like marvel rivals using a lot of gpu and baldur's gate using a lot of CPU. But it depends on the game.
Interesting_Ad_6992@reddit
Marvel Rivals is pretty CPU bound; so I don't think it's that much of an exception. When I run the benchmark in the game, it shows my 1% lows for CPU at 20fps, my graphics card is no where near that.
All that said; the actual game runs fine, I can play it at 4k Ultra everything with Lumen GI and Lumen reflections and DLSS set to Quality and still get 55-60 fps.
I'm on an i5 9600k and an RTX 5070 12 gb. If I upgraded to the 9800X3D I'd see a nearly 25% uplift in total, but my CPU 1% lows would be so high, that my average frame rate estimate would be almost 70 fps. With 2x frame gen it's actually excellent. At 1440p with 2X I'm at 220 FPS. This gives you a really responsive base frame rate and good frame gen for high refresh monitors. With Reflex and Boost the frame time is about 14 ms, which is lower than 60 locked without Reflex or frame gen....
So that's very competitive. I'm playing on a 60hz 4k 43" Samsung TV from 2016, and I've managed to make it to Grandmaster at 120fps Ultra everything in 4k at around 110 fps with 2x frame gen.
Input lag matters, but mostly on the display and the base frame rate. If those are high already... frame gen isn't the boogey man everyone makes it out to be for competitive games. It's more than adequate to get to celestial or Eternity. So unless you're trying to play professionally at the highest levels for money -- I really don't think it's super advantageous to shut it off.
Necros is playing at 4x frame gen at 800 FPS and he's routinely top 500.
burncell@reddit
How can you see the difference between cpu 1% lows and the Gpu 1% Lows?
JPackers0427@reddit
Ya... that reply is so fucking stupid... helldivers 2 at low everything exept particles and texture which are at ultra hog up my entire 14900k performance cores... i disabled efficiency cores and when I play HD2 it says 100% cpu utilization and sometimes gpu drops as low as 50%... 6800xt at 1440p its insane how cpu heavy that game is
burncell@reddit
I have played helldivers a lot,
On my 12900k, it was never struggling too much, with the same resolution,
So its not the Cpu you have an Beast of a Cpu
kikimaru024@reddit
Clear your shader cache!
This has been an ongoing issue with HD2 but it's a very easy fix.
bubken99@reddit
Tbf Marvel Rivals is only an exception because it's probably one of the worst optimized games out there
Interesting_Ad_6992@reddit
It's not anymore. They optimized it tremendously going into season 2.5 and then again with the season 3 patch. Stranges portals don't slow the game down anymore, neither does the map rearranging itself... I used to have to play this game on medium settings without lumen GI or Lumen Reflections, but now I can play it with Lumen GI on Ultra and Lumen Reflections and still get frame rates higher than I got with those settings off before.
They don't ever put "performance" things in the patch notes, but it's no where near what it used to be, it's fairly solidly optimized now.
Masungit@reddit
Some maps are still badly optimised. My GPU usage still drops on some areas of some maps like the Spider-Island maps. My CPU is a 12700K.
Interesting_Ad_6992@reddit
I have a 9600k and mine doesn't drop anywhere... So that's weird, yeah?
That tells me your CPU isn't working right.
Masungit@reddit
Nah. I’ve looked up benchmarks on YouTube and saw the same performance as I was having. You’re probably lying. No way that 9th gen is keeping up in Marvel Rivals. You are delusional.
Interesting_Ad_6992@reddit
Lol ok.
https://youtu.be/UclPxEZXfGs?si=UWcbdE2wvy84b1Y2
No way that's ultra everything including lumen and lumen reflections at 4k with dlss on Quality.
No way at all, it's just a delusion.
Masungit@reddit
I don’t see any performance metrics aside from FPS. Are you a moron? Lol
Interesting_Ad_6992@reddit
Yeah I'm at 4K ultra everything, DLSS Quality.... What do you want? A 5090 can't do 240hz.
If I lower the resolution to 1440p, the frame rate on ultra everything is 200+.
Here is the thing, I ordered an Ultrawide WQHD QOLED Curved screen that's 175 hz.
You're asking me to have performance is the very best hardware on the market when I have an i5 9600k and a 5070.
Like 200 fps completely maxed out is bad or something?
You don't need to see anything other than the FPS, because you can see the game doesn't hitch and it's really smooth, right?
So what are you wanting to see?
Masungit@reddit
Coz you are absolutely clueless. Install afterburner, display CPU usage and GPU usage so you can see, then uncap your framerate. Then play a match in the spider-island maps. There is absolutely no way your GPU will be 95-99% at all times. I have a 9700K too so I know. Your fucking target is 100 fps, that’s not exactly pushing the CPU to its limits. Plus aren’t you using frame gen? Ofcourse my target is also to be GPU bound but at 240 hz it’s much harder for an old CPU to keep up in this game, both my 9700K and my 12700k. What? Your CPU is special?
Interesting_Ad_6992@reddit
Zzzzz. So you don't care how the game runs then? You just car to see GPU utilization numbers? And when the framerate is still high... Then the argument is it could be higher with a better processor?
Well yeah -- nobody said it wouldn't be. Marvel Rivals is a game with really good graphics and it's insanely fast and it came out in December of 24, and I'm using a processor from 2018.
Sure if I upgrade the performance would be better, but the game isn't struggling at all to run at fast and playable frame rates even on budget mid tier cpus from almost 9 years ago.
How is that a proof the game is unoptimized? If anything it's a proof of the opposite.
Masungit@reddit
Mate we are going round in circles. You don’t know what you are talking about. Ofcourse I care how the game runs that’s why I want it to use all my GPU power. My point is there are certain maps that are CPU intensive that may cause your GPU usage to go down with a weak CPU. But since your target is 100 fps with frame gen you’ll never see that problem but it doesn’t mean the issue doesn’t exist.
Interesting_Ad_6992@reddit

Spider Islands. I reduced all the settings and resolution to make it the most cpu bound possible.
Shit runs fine man; your shit is broken.
Interesting_Ad_6992@reddit
You say I don't know what I'm talking about? Which part specifically?
Even at 200 without frame gen, I don't notice it either.
1% lows are incredibly high when my framerate is high, without frame generation, too. If I shut lumen off my frame rate is 130-140.
I asked you to frame your argument, please restate it... and you answered "You just don't know what you're talking about"
Which part is wrong and specifically how did I demonstrate that I don't know what I'm talking about.
Answer in good faith.
I'm still at work. When I get home I'm gonna make more videos specifically to show you that the game runs excellently and I can hit every refresh rate target I mentioned up to 400.
Boruto_uchiha77@reddit
I’ve never had any problems with it I run a 4 tb hdd and a 6650 xt and a 5600x with 32 gbs of ddr5 Corsair vengeance ram
Odd-Conversation-672@reddit
Weird, the game runs really well on my machine, I can think of quite a few games I've played in recent memory that are more poorly optimized than Marvel Rivals. Is it really that bad?
ye1l@reddit
It runs "well" in that you can have a good enough experience on a decent system but the game looks pretty much like overwatch but you get literally 3-4x less FPS than in overwatch... The optimization is absolutely horrible for what it is. You should get 150-200 fps with a 1660 super and a half a decade old CPU on that game but instead you get like 60 which is on the verge of being unplayable for a fast paced competitive shooter
bubken99@reddit
You hit the jackpot then cause it's very hit or miss with alot of frame drops and crashes during heavy team fights. If you want an easy way to climb with a decent rig just play Loki and set every setting to the minimum. You'll literally have your average player playing at 15 fps. Even on console it the game crashes enough for it to be a thought I'm your mind
Odd-Conversation-672@reddit
Huh. I mean I do have an RTX 5080, but even on my old 3080 Ti I wasn't really struggling to run the game at all. My CPU is an older AM4 5800X3D with old DDR4 memory, too. Maybe it just runs like shit on low end hardware?
Elitefuture@reddit
The issue I saw with a lot of my friends was lacking vram. A lot of people don't even have 8gb of vram...
Add in the fact that the average person has a GPU around a 2060, I could see it being a really hard game to run.
The 3080 ti is still a great card and a lot faster than what most people have.
erenzil7@reddit
Yeah no
I'm playing rivals on a laptop 3050 with 4Gb. Settings low, dlss quality (1920*1200) and cap at 90fps - almost always at 90.
People struggling with performance in rivals need to disable lumen first
cluberti@reddit
The 3080Ti was a fairly high-end video card when it launched, and was pretty equivalent (+/- 10% overall) to the 3080, 3090, 4070 Super, 4070Ti, and 5070 in benchmarks.
According to the Steam hardware survey for June 2025, the first time any of those (or better) video cards show up on the list is the 4070 Super, at #16 on the list and ~1.87% of all systems reporting, and the next times are the 3080 (#19, 1.75%) and the 4070 Ti (#25, 1.11%). Almost all of the cards in the top 25 are low end (xx50/xx60) or integrated graphics and only 7 of those 25 cards are xx70 or greater.
https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/videocard/
A large percentage of people using their PC to play games are using potatoes, comparatively, to a 3080Ti or a 5080.
Equivalent_Chipmunk@reddit
Bro that's a great card even today. It launched at like $1200, or the cost of 3 PS5s for the GPU alone. Something being a bit worse than that is not "low end hardware"

Me when the UE5 live service game based around a several billion dollar IP and developed quickly in China isn’t a case study in exemplary game optimization
proggen45@reddit
I will say that unoptimized games make huge use of extra v-cache and you gain pretty decent FPS with X3D CPUs.
ExplodingFistz@reddit
Probably worth mentioning that for esports games you're using the lowest graphics settings to achieve the highest FPS possible, whereas for single player AAA you want a balance of great visuals and decent performance.
EndlessZone123@reddit
Rivals eat CPU as well. It's hard to hit 144fps during a fight on a 5700X3D on a competitive shooter. I can always lower settings for gpu but no for cpu.
BoreJam@reddit
Not just the game but the resolution and graphics settings too.
AlmostASandwich@reddit
Also strategy games are a good example of cpu bottleneck most people ignore
EVGACAB@reddit
Great answer. Knowledgeable and concise
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I have a 5070 Ti. I feel like the DDR4 12900k is kind of limiting in some games and a 9800X3D would provide benefit in CPU bound scenarios over the 12900k.
BudgetBuilder17@reddit
Why not get ddr5 and find out if it is the ram bandwidth. I mean 6000 mhz being around 80-90 gbps if I remember right.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
That would mean a whole new motherboard. If I had to buy a whole new motherboard, I'd rather a new CPU at that point.
I found out that the games I'm playing are just poorly optimized or that they suddenly became poorly optimized.
BudgetBuilder17@reddit
Well i thought all boards did ddr4/5, nope just the CPU. So yeah, but i don't play anything demanding.
psimwork@reddit
"Feel like" does not equal "actually happening."
I would check this out. Your CPU is faster than a 7600X.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
It probably is faster than a 7600x, but as for frame stability that would be assuming no thermal throttling.
Gseventeen@reddit
If you wanna upgrade. Go for it brah!
THEJimmiChanga@reddit
FR, it seems like OP already is dead set on it as he's arguing everyone's points in here, so I'm perplexed as to why they even made this post
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I'm not arguing at all, but you have come to that conclusion rather early. I'm here stating my reasons why I feel that way. If you want to disagree go ahead, but no one has refuted what I said about better 1% and 0.1% lows and being easier to cool. If you want to refute those points, I will hear it but as of yet I haven't seen an argument against it.
ThankGodImBipolar@reddit
Let’s zoom out for a second here - you want to spend north of 600USD on an upgrade that will likely be fairly minuscule, when you likely have a better CPU than a substantial proportion of the people you’re asking. If that’s a rational decision for you, then you’re in a privileged position, and you should consider that when taking advice from random people on the internet (who could be children, from third world countries, or millionaires). Personally, I wouldn’t even think about the question you’re asking until at least AM6.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Money I have to spend is not a concern and I never said it was. You can argue about privilege all you want, it's not relevant to what I am asking.
I'm not asking for extra performance as in more FPS, I'm asking if it would provide more fps stability.
bp1976@reddit
Im a guy so dont assfuck me ;)
As another privileged gamer, I switched from a 13700k to a 7800x3d, then a 9800x3d. The AMD chips are insanely easier to cool. I have ZERO regrets about switching.
greggm2000@reddit
As someone with a 12700K + DDR4 + 4080 who has contemplated making the switch to a 9800X3D, and who has so far held off, in part bc of the techpowerup benchmark results.. I know about the "insanely easier to cool", but what else makes you happy you switched? So far I've been holding out for Zen 7 on AM6 with DDR6, but may give in for Zen 6 in late 2026.
bp1976@reddit
I haven't had any issues. I just don't like to worry. I don't play competitive games, I play AAA stuff at 4k, so smoothness is the most important thing for me. I don't use my PC for any major productivity stuff so the X3D chips just make more sense to me.
Full disclosure I actually returned the 13700k as I just couldn't get it running cool even with a 360mm AIO and while researching for the possible issue (this was before all the issues were public), I kept seeing that the 7800X3d was a better chip and so I just returned the 13700K, board, and ram and drove to MC and just bought an entire new platform.
greggm2000@reddit
Thanks! I play at 4K, smoothness is a goal of mine as well, I suppose I should take a closer look at that with the games I play, and make my decision based on that. Zen 7 would be ideal, but ofc that’s years away and doesn’t help me now, or with the games that’ll be coming out in the next little while.
I imagine that if I had held out a little longer before upgrading from my decrepit i5-3570k, I’d have gone 13700k, even regretted not doing so at one point.. I’d have run head-on into the degradation issues and would probably already be using a 7800X3D! My 12700K remains rock-solid though!
bp1976@reddit
I have a 12600K in my workstation PC at the office, never had a problem with it. Built this one after the degradation issues hit, but MC had an awesome deal at the time with the processor/board/ram/GPU and figured I would try an all intel build. (This has an A770). No issues at all but of course I've never gamed on it LOL.
greggm2000@reddit
I wished I lived anywhere close to a MC, but alas, I do not. The lack of one nearby does make impulse purchases/upgrades much harder.. which is maybe not a bad thing :)
I’ve always had the E-cores disabled, what with the game issues back at launch in 2021. Not sure if doing that helped those 1% lows, I’ve never thought to try and measure it.
bp1976@reddit
Mine is about a 1.5 hour drive, but I enjoy it. (I live NW of Pittsburgh and the closest MC is in Cleveland).
I don't go often but it is a nice way to spend an afternoon. I'll usually try and find something else to do while I am up there to make a day of it.
greggm2000@reddit
Mine is 3 hours away.. not terrible, I could do it, but 6+ hours of driving when I could just wait a couple days and have stuff delivered to my doorstep.. idk. It’s just not so far seemed worth it to me.
bp1976@reddit
90 mins each way vs 3 hours each way is a big difference. 90 mins is a nice long drive with some music....3 hours is a road trip LOL.
greggm2000@reddit
mmhmm! And then there’s the cost of gas + maybe a hotel if I did an overnight thing. Kinda ruins the MC deals for me, in context, unless I had reason to be in that city for some other reason anyway.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Yeah everyone who actually switched from LGA1700 CPUs to 9000 series chips are saying this... meanwhile I am getting criticized for disagreeing or trying to get others to expand on their points, but somehow I am expressing defensive behavior.
bp1976@reddit
Well, part of that is just human nature, no one wants to admit a mistake. I was fortunate and noticed immediately that the 13700k was just running too hot and I was able to return it right away. As far as swapping from 7800x3d to 9800x3d, well, I am a snob I guess LOL.
ThankGodImBipolar@reddit
No shit it isn’t, but it sure as shit is relevant to people’s responses. If the upgrade is pocket change to somebody, then maybe it’s worth thinking about, but if it’s not, then it’s obviously a stupid idea. Dawg, I don’t even know what your “status in society” is. Statistically, it’s more likely that you’d be getting it on credit and paying it off over months or years because you can’t afford it in the first place. Whether it’s that or you’re a billionaire does not change the point of my root comment at all. It wasn’t meant to be personal. Don’t take it that way. 1LastHit2Die4@reddit
Not really. What you see there is indeed minimal marging gain but you will have better stability due to thermal superiority of AM5 9800X3D.
Keep in mind that 1% lows can be deceiving. If you have 10000 frames 1% is 100 frames, these being the lowest with avg of 74fps. But on the both camps you can have different values, one with consistent frame distribution of 70 while on the other camp 100 then 60 drop.
Guess which will feel better? Yet both have an avg 74
KFC_Junior@reddit

12900k draws less than 100w avg on gaming. its not gonna make a fucking diffrence compared to a stock 9800x3d 65w
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I'd say wattage would depend on the game. In my games I play, I usually find my 12900k drawing over 100W. Often 197W in loading scenarios.
I mostly see under 100W being drawn if I'm doing non-gaming tasks or if the game is in a place where there is not much load on the CPU.
1LastHit2Die4@reddit
I don’t know if you are a Reddit warrior but you evidence goes against your statement. Your link shows the Intel avg consumption of 237w while the AMD is 155w. I don’t who comes with numbers out of thin air, but it ain’t me. Funny how some of you embarrass yourself while trying to act aggressive.

i went from 12700k OC to 9800x3d. Hell let loose, POE2, helldivers 2 all had massive increases. Also my 9800x3d is pulling like 60 watts lmao
Grydian@reddit
I noticed a huge difference going from my 7700x to a 9800x3d. I play a lot of graphically intense games at 4k. Everyone says I wouldn't see it even though I have a 4090. Well that 3d cache is amazing and it vastly improved the stability of everything. The chip is the fastest thing I have used and I have been building since 1994. A lot of cores are fun but like you have said uses a lot of power and is hot and loud. I had a 5950x and while I love how it could crunch through chess engines with tones of threads it was a beast to cool. I loved going down to only 8 cores and having them all be much faster. You won't regret this upgrade
syunz@reddit
The question you need to ask yourself is how often do you play those "some" games where the performance benefit of the 9800x3d actually maters. I'm kindof in the same position as I have an overclocked 12400 and to me the improvement wasn't great enough to justify the $900 cost of a new mobo, ram and cpu. But I mean if $900 isn't a lot to you, then go ahead.
Pursueth@reddit
Anyone telling you that the performance gains will not be felt is out of their fucking mind.
Zealousideal_Bid1232@reddit
I have a 14600k with ddr4 and a 7800xt. My neighbor has a 7600x3d and a 6950xt.
They perform very similarly. We don’t see the big 1 percent lows difference that people talk about. Even in corner cases like WoW. But ymmv.
TallComputerDude@reddit
Upgrade for the vibes, bro.
adamchevy@reddit
That’s what I’m thinking. I did the same upgrade and it’s really just for my own happiness. Really isn’t that what this is all about anyway.
Ballbuddy4@reddit
Def not true. In CPU bound games the fps increase can be massive even with a way inferior gpu than a 5080.
261846@reddit
There are many games where he will. Also he talks about stuttering which X3D definitely helps with
Fredasa@reddit
Knowing what I know now, if I were on Intel still, I'd probably be thinking about how to finagle an AM5 build. I'm very sensitive to the drawbacks of bad 1% lows, which is shorthand for I hate stutters and a lot of studios are very bad at prioritizing a smooth frame cadence.
kronikfumes@reddit
Would I notice a difference with a 3090ti going from a 5800x to a 9800X3D?
disgruntledempanada@reddit
Depends on the game. I went from a 5900X to a 5800X3D and noticed incredible improvements, but I race simulators in VR so the games are heavily CPU dependent (lots of physics). The 5800X will be less likely to stutter than the 5900X due to only having one CCD and shared cache.
If you haven't noticed CPU bottlenecking in the games you play, it's probably not worth it. If you are, it'll be great.
Do you play at 4k or lower resolutions? This also has a huge impact on the GPU/CPU bottlenecking situation.
kronikfumes@reddit
I currently game on 27” 1440p @144hz but I do want to get an OLED though I haven’t decided if I’d go 1440p or 4k for it. I’m waiting to see if a trueblack glossy tandem WOLED at both resolutions from ASUS comes out but that is likely still a year away.
Only “comp” game I play atm is The Finals. With DLSS performance and video setting adjusted I can easily get 144+ frames. I suppose main concern really would be going to 4k and getting less fps or not being able to reach a similar refresh rate to what I do now.
Thank you for your comment and taking time to reply to me!
Semyonov@reddit
I have the exact setup as you, a 3090ti and upgraded to a 9800x3d. I game at 1440p on a 27" OLED, 240hz monitor.
For me, it made a huge difference over my old i5-12600k when playing simulation games, which is primarily what I play. I suppose it would depend on what games you like to play but I know The Finals can be more CPU heavy.
dugi_o@reddit
I have 5900X. Your comment has me considering 5800X3D now.
kronikfumes@reddit
I don’t think the $300+ they are still going for (since they are no longer in production) is justified when you can move to AM5 and expect another generation of future chip support.
Detenator@reddit
This is what I would recommend. I bought a 5900x because the 5800x3d was like $100 more for 20% more gaming performance with less synthetic performance. The 5900x is still really solid, I would wait for a good deal before upgrading and would definitely go up to a new platform. It's just that the 7 and 9000 series were really, really expensive when I looked.
disgruntledempanada@reddit
I highly recommend it if you can find one. 5700X3D would work too but I'm glad I got a 5800X3D when I did.
dugi_o@reddit
I run with a 6950XT and think my stuttering and low performance is caused by CPU. I was planning to do a new build next gen.
disgruntledempanada@reddit
If you can hold out do it. As much as I'd love a 9800X3D and an RTX 5090 right now, my setup is good enough for what I do with it and a 11800X3D and RTX 6090 will be way better. 5800X3D and 3090 have been good to me.
Pursueth@reddit
Absolutely, 100 percent.
SupremeOwl48@reddit

Don’t do it. Ddr5 is more headache than it’s worth on alderlake
airmantharp@reddit

IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Apparently Alder Lake struggles still with speeds past 4800 MHz.
airmantharp@reddit
DDR4 or DDR5?
7200MT/s was absolutely doable with second and third generation Hynix DDR5.
I've done 6600MT/s on my 12700K with first generation Hynix, and 6200 with first generation Samsung - and that was years and many BIOS releases ago.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
DDR5. I'm unaware of the capability of 12th gen with DDR5 now as I'm on DDR4 and someone had told me recently about how they still struggle with DDR5, but perhaps with BIOS updates things have changed.

IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I used to undervolt, as soon as Windows 11 24H2 came out I had BSoDs and instability related to the undervolt.
zephyrinthesky28@reddit

chrownage@reddit
I have a similar build to you, 12900K and 5070ti, though I have DDR5 RAM and I do not have the hitching in Halo Infinite that you referenced in your OP. I've been rocking 6400 MHz no problem. I even have both my 5070ti and 12900K undervolted.
nepnep1111@reddit

IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)

Subject-Beginning512@reddit

TakarieZan@reddit
I just had an issue with stuttering, and then i was crashing. Come to find out one of my ram sticks died. Once I bought a new one I was perfectly fine. I would say check bios for whatever the default OC for ram is and then if you have some spare sticks test it out. Your CPU could just be faulty and you could RMA it.
If those two don't solve it make sure your settings in game make sense of course. Try disabling V-Sync (assuming you have G-Sync or the AMD equivalent). If none of those work then yeah I would say make the switch. Sell your parts/computers for a good price (check the average on EBAY and don't get scammed if you decide to sell it to one of the big sites), and make the switch. Its not like you're making a horrible decision doing that. I am also assuming you checked your GPU and made sure you have a good ahrdware match.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I have a 5070 Ti for my GPU. Before buying some warned that there could be a slight bottleneck with a 12900k with DDR4 as it has like 10% less performance than when paired with DDR5, but that it's not significant.
I found out one of the games are poorly optimized another one was relatively well optimized except for in some areas in the game.
Also heard that over-tightening a cooler can also cause instability (I screwed in my heatsink pretty tight) so this time I screwed it in just slightly less and my thermals are still actually better after putting in a contact frame (my cooler still has its limits under benchmarking so I think an AIO would do better, but I don't want to spend money on a new case just to put an AIO in as the layout of my case would prevent me from doing so)

Don’t worry about bending pins first place cpu in the socket do not close the mounting kit you have too unscrew 3 screws. Take the frame place it on and screw it back in without applying pressure. I did this to l5 fiends Pcs too -5 to -10 is very good plus it helps ram to run strangely faster
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I just put a Thermalright contact frame on today. I haven't done enough testing yet, but on the high end under stress test in CPU-Z I do not notice a difference. Perhaps it is because of the limits of the cooler and it is under gaming loads where my cooler isn't so limited where I benefit most because realistically games do not draw more than 200W on this CPU.
ComfortableUpbeat309@reddit
Yeah I limited and undervolted my 13700k 5,5ghz too (200 watt, 300 Ampere, IA VR Max 1.35v) and it never hits over 65c in games with my 420 push pull aio
ComfortableUpbeat309@reddit
Ddr4 is starving the memory bandwidth of these CPUs
ComfortableUpbeat309@reddit
My 13700k has 105gb/s read write copy 👍🏻

I don't know about crazy but I struggle to see the value added as being worth the investment.
If I were you, I'd hold the line for another generation and see where the ball lies then.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
That's the plan. Someone told me that my games are just poorly optimized. I've just put a contact frame on and I have adjusted the fan curves so I'll see where that takes me the next time I game.
SkarletIce@reddit
if u plan to straight up just game then yeah a 9800x3d would be a better option but if u are a multitasker like u game while u have chrome open with a youtube or twitch video playing or Spotify all while on discord. I think u might find that the higher core count more enjoyable to use.
now there is another option here, the 14600k usually, I don't recommend going down in CPU tiers but if u just want to game while doing all those other background tasks then a 14600k gets u most of the performance of a 9800x3d at half the cost plus it is better than a 12900k in every way while using almost half the power.
now if u want to do a full rebuild then sure the 9800x3d is a good idea but if u don't want to have to tear everything apart and just drop in something new while gaining performance then the 14600k is a great option. and an NHD15 will handle that no problem
eraserking@reddit
Having chrome, Spotify or Twitch/YouTube in chrome going is not something that significantly leans in favor of the 12900k. Those secondary tasks do not strongly impact a 9800X3D with a game in focus. They’re hardly of concern to either cpu.
SkarletIce@reddit
True u are right the 9800x3d can handle these just fine but a 12900k/14600k/14700k handles them better without taking away recourses from the game. that's why I said if OP plans to just game then yeah a 9800x3d but if they are a heavy multitasker then a higher core count CPU is the better option if u want a smoother and more responsive experience in general.
eraserking@reddit
Word. Can you point me to any tests or sites that show resources being taken away and a performance impact when it comes to 9800X3D vs something like 12900k during gaming with other tasks going? I haven’t seen anything like that myself so I’m curious.
SkarletIce@reddit
ok so no I cant find anything online to show u and I probably never will. because these benchmarks are mostly done on completely clean installs of windows with windows update and antivirus disabled on one monitor with nothing in the background, they are meant to show best case scenario and will never show benchmarks like that because they aren't repeatable at least in a way that is reliable.
As for the smoothness of a system it is something u have to experience when all those tasks are being done and u are in a large 30-100 person multiplayer battle with gun fire and explosions and u tab out real quick to skip an add or change songs or start sharing ur screen and u don't stutter u don't hitch u every second is seamless its really something u have to experience because words don't do it justice.
I went from a 12700f to a 9800x3d and while in games it was great with my 4080S in multitasking it sucked every time I tabbed away i got frame dips that lasted 5 seconds going up and down especially in games that want to use ur whole CPU like COD and Tarkov or even Rivals. I refunded the 9800x3d and got a 9900x and x870E in a combo from Newegg and i have loved it ever since. I genuinely wouldn't go back to 8 cores or less. but again I am a heavy multitasker and can only speak to my experience
TalkingRaccoon@reddit
No I went from 13700k to 9800x3d but it was also defective and I was having to clock it down to stop my games from crashing. Don't even know if I should bother rma-ing it
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I see. ASRock motherboard on BIOS version before 3.25? Could be that potentially as it is known for frying 9800X3Ds specifically. If not, I'd RMA it as usually this shouldn't happen.
TalkingRaccoon@reddit
Mines the ROG B850-I, it was just a dumb setting that defaults to "auto" which actually means "off". I turn that setting On and all stutters went away. I was looking at that ASRock b850I too and glad I didn't go with that one 😂
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Oh wait, sorry I think I misunderstood. I thought you were saying your 9800X3D was defective... it was just your 13700k, right?
And yeah that setting I think you are talking about is PBO if I am not mistaken. I believe I heard of that auto setting before.
2cars10@reddit
Depends on what GPU you have, but a 12900k on ddr4 isn't as fast as people think.with ddr5 it's about 20% faster. Which puts it between zen 3 and zen 3 x3d here. It's about a 50% performance uplift so whether it's worth it or not is up to you. Source 1 Source 2
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I have a 5070 Ti. 20% is bigger than the 10% that I thought I heard. But that 50% going to 9800X3D seems too big to be true especially with games that utilize more cores (like Halo Infinite I think benefits from more cores and I see it using basically all cores), not saying that most games do that but just an example.
2cars10@reddit
Those numbers don't necessarily reflect what you will see. It's testing at 1080p with a 4090 in CPU heavy games. With a 5070 ti I think you will see a nice uplift in games even if you play at 1440p, less so at 4k.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Ah that makes sense. I game at 1440.
AisMyName@reddit
I never had thermal issues with my i9-14900kf, rarely getting in to the 90C area, so while they do use a lot of power and they do run hot, something is wrong w/ your rig.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
What is your cooler? I have a Gen 1 Noctua NH-D15. You are supposed to use a contact frame on these LGA1700 CPUs, but I am hesitant to mess with removing the ILM and replacing it with a contact frame.
King_Zilant@reddit
You're not actually "supposed" to use anything... the base consumer requirements for anyone is as basic as it should be, anything addition like the frame is optional...
If you want better cooling you have several options, low the power limits in bios/ undervolt overclock... You can also enable eco mode in bios (some mobos) and in windows...
You can check your case fan layout for more optimal airflow....
And of course, in game settings... lower graphical quality a bit or crowd density and you should hear fans less... (remember, gpu is warming the air in your case which does ho into the cpu cooler unless another fan is forcing cooler air as well)
Hope that helped.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
About the undervolt, I used to undervolt by 0.050V and it was fine for almost three years, but ever since the Windows 11 24H2 update I experienced BSoDs up until I got rid of the undervolt. It seems like my CPU doesn't take kindly to undervolting anymore idk.
I have three intake fans (two front, one side) and one exhaust in the rear all non-PWM). I feel like the 9800X3D would be less of a cooling nightmare because it runs more efficiently than the 12900k which wants to get up to 197W in games meanwhile the 9800X3D gets to maybe 160W at worst in maybe benchmarking scenarios. I kinda want to get around the whole cooling nightmare of my 12900k and reduce instances of thermal throttling.
randylush@reddit
If you under volt without decreasing clock speed then you are l going to make your system less stable without much benefit. If your goal was to reduce power consumption then you can do that with a TDP limit.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I understand what you're saying, but what I don't understand is how come when I reduced the voltage without changing clock speed for almost three years without issue, suddenly it became a problem when I installed Windows 11 version 24H2? (and it was a fresh install too with latest drivers)
randylush@reddit
Windows 11 24H2 may have started using a new processor instruction that it wasn’t using before. This actually does happen and sometimes Microsoft will issue a warning to people with older systems that a given processor line will stop being supported. Just a theory. It may not have been a new instruction but maybe just a new code path that activates your silicon in a different way that’s now unstable. If you remove the under volt, does it become stable?
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I removed the undervolt long ago like back in December. After the second BSoD I got a message upon restarting from the BIOS that my settings were unstable and that they were reset back to stock values.
daeganreddit_@reddit
13700k with a contact frame on a arctic LF II AIO. occasionally hits 80c on harder hitting games. zero stutter. had undervolted and overclocked since day one. with your 12900k if you wanted to make it last i would get a contact frame and research undervolting and overclocking. of all the intel cpu series for that socket ... the 12th has had no microcode issues. stutter can come from multiple sources. it would probably benefit you to first find the source of your stutter so if it came back with the AMD you would know how to fix it. also on the contact frames - installation is fairly easy. when screwing it on you just alternate corners and the whole thing screws down evenly. eliminating any chance of bending pins.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I just put in an order yesterday hours after making this post and it comes in today so I'll see what it does for me.
IceSeeYou@reddit
You're definitely not "supposed" to use a contact frame, it's entirely optional and aesthetics more than anything.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Due to the poor ILM on the LGA1700 socket, you are supposed to use a contact frame. Not by Intel's guidelines, but it's what most advise because LGA1700 is notorious for excessive pressure from the ILM. I remember when I put this build together three years ago, the amount of pressure I had to put down on the latching mechanism actually scared me, it's a lot of pressure and it bends the CPU to the point where replacing the ILM with a contact frame can yield a 10C temp increase. It's more than aesthetics, but I hesitate to touch it because it sounds more like a headache than many claim it is.
AisMyName@reddit
Thermal Grizzley contact frame. Corsair h170i 420mm AIO.
I had never removed a contact frame. Simply watched a YT video and was very careful. IT was a piece of cake.
bow_down_whelp@reddit
420mm aio is not a normal cooling solution, and you still get into 90 sometimes. Not sure op is at fault
AisMyName@reddit
I should add that I am right now dealing with Intel on a replacement for my defective i9-14900kf which is very common. It never ran 100C throttling, but with 4 microcode updates, eventually it crapped out on me. I also will add that IF they give me my $ back, I think I'll go like 9950x3D.

IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Yeah these i9s draw crazy power (peaks up to 241W with stock power limits, but doesn't stay there). Was pretty fun to have when I first built and could actually undervolt the CPU and keep it much cooler, but now that for whatever reason my undervolt isn't stable anymore after three years, it's getting complicates to cool.
Would love a CPU like that where it's low wattage and cools easier. The 9800X3D is that (though it draws more watts than the 7800X3D, but apparently runs cooler due to its design)
BisonSafe@reddit
100%, I built my build 5 months ago and only added fan curves since a week.
Playing RDR2 maxed out on 1440p gives me an average CPU temp now of around 60-70 with sometimes spiking to 80-85 but rarely. Before the curves it was always around 80-85 degrees 🫠
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Oh nice! I've never really touched my fan curves, but I'm definitely going to try that out. Thanks for sharing that!
THEJimmiChanga@reddit
Yep. FOMO's got you by the balls. 12.9k is still a hell of a cpu in 2025. Makes dropping $500 on a 9800x3d seem pretty redundant, but hey, it's your money. We do live in a flex/validation era now where it's top of the line rigs or bust, so what do I know.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Yes, I estimated the cost to switch for me to be about $800 because I'd have 64 GB of 6000 MHz CL30 memory.
12900k is a nice CPU indeed, but it seems to have poor 1% and 0.1% lows relative to the 9800X3D which I believe would reduce stuttering. Average FPS itself looks nice, but when you get down to those lows, it ruins the experience.
m4ttjirM@reddit
The 12900k IMO is Intel's last good chip. My dude, you are comparing it to a chip that came out over 3 years later of course it's going to be better at not only the lows but everything lol.
If you got the itch and it's in your budget go for it. You will need a new mobo, ram, possibly ssd, maybe a better psu, not sure what you have.
Before I went all out though I would possibly try to see what's going on with your rig. You may not have had a good thermal application. When 12 series came out I built a ton of pcs with them for friends, family, and clients. They're all still running strong. I would repaste again and maybe a new cpu fan + reformat. Definitely worth a shot before going all out on a new build. Worst case scenario you move the new cpu fan to your new mobo and cpu combo.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I've decided to order a contact frame and really try it out.
I would definitely not need a new PSU or SSD as I've recently upgraded to a 2024 Corsair RM850x for my 5070 Ti and I have a 980 Pro 1 TB and a 2 TB 870 EVO SATA SSD if I were to hypothetically upgraded.
I have suspicion my new 64 GB 3600 MHz DDR4 RAM may be defective given two recent BSoDs related to memory, but I have not been able to replicate it nor do I have concrete evidence that the memory is truly defective given the inability to reproduce issues and no errors showing up in memtest86+ and memtest5 (for OC stability)
m4ttjirM@reddit
Here's something I said to folks when the 12900k first came out -
Adding a contact frame (like a Thermalright or Thermal Grizzly contact frame) to a 12900K setup can help thermals slightly in some cases, but it’s risky and often unnecessary. Alder Lake CPUs like the 12900K already have high mounting pressure requirements, and most good motherboards are engineered with ILM tolerances in mind. Replacing the ILM with a contact frame can potentially damage the socket pins if done incorrectly, and the thermal gains are usually minimal, often just 2-5°C. Unless you’re extreme overclocking and know exactly what you're doing, it's more likely to introduce problems than solve them. Some users also report blue screens and many issues after adding a contact frame.
But I guess you have nothing to lose at this point
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I believe what you say and it's why I've been hesitant to do so for so long. I'm willing to take a massive risk and monitor what happens in the next week or so and see what happens. Worst comes to worse, I can add the ILM back.
randylush@reddit
The contact frame is not going to help your 1% lows. It will make a small difference to your thermals.
Installing it is not a “massive risk” lmao
In your case, your thermals and your 1% lows are not related to each other. If you are under 100C then thermals aren’t really going to affect your performance or even really the longevity of the chip. Temperature is just a number that people chase and get anal about but ultimately a 70C system and a 50C system behave exactly the same.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
You're right, but someone replied to me and I realized it's that my games I'm playing are just poorly optimized so it isn't worth upgrading CPU over a poorly optimized game.
I touch 100C quite easily under gaming loads so I'm thinking a contact frame will provide some benefit, but hey it's just $10 on Amazon so I'll see what that does to avoid thermal throttling.
I call it a massive risk to put one on because that's what it feels like to me. Feels like I'm doing something with the board and I could fuck it up if I were to fuck up and damage something in process. Is it likely that I would? Perhaps not, but I'm pretty anxious about doing it.
THEJimmiChanga@reddit
You've got other problems if you're stuttering with a 5070ti and 12900k, as that absolutely should not be happening. I've been running a 5800x/6800xt/32gb ram since 2021 and play all the new AAA releases I'm interested in at native 1440p high settings and get solid FPS and 1% lows. The only exception is when a game is badly optimized, which falls on the game, not the rig. You, running a 12900k and 5070ti should be having an even better experience then my already good experience, so if you are not, you have something else going on homie.
If you're thermal throttling, buy a 240 or 360mm AIO, problem solved. You should have known this going ito the build. To drop $800+ to get slightly better 1% lows is absolutely asinine, but it's tour money, you don't need us redditors to tell you how to spend it.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
The thing is that when I first got this build, undervolting was okay and I rarely hit thermal throttling so because of that, no issues with cooling. For whatever reason now with the Windows 11 24H2 update my undervolt that was stable for nearly three years became no longer stable and I had BSoDs. I had to give up the undervolt for things to be stable so now I am experiencing more issues related to thermal throttling.
THEJimmiChanga@reddit
You've highlighted it on your own right there. You've got something else going on. Throwing $800 plus for miniscule 1% gains because something else is happening in the background ain't it man.

I went from a 12900k to a 9950x3d. I'll say it's not the biggest change ever, my main reasoning was that I had a ddr4 motherboard. Less important, I play a lot of cs2 and the difference in how that game feels was incredible to me. I'd drop to mid 300 fps on maps with water and sometimes see high 200s. After the swap I have very rarely dropped under my cap for 480.

XMP is enable and I have confirmed through task manager that it is running at 3600 MHz. I was actually messing around with it because I was getting BSoDs assuming it was instability of some sort, but it appears it was related only to shutting down immediately after exiting games such as Halo MCC or Halo Infinite which utilize Easy Anticheat which I suspect is related because it's only those games that I every once in awhile get a BSoD related to memory if I shut down too fast after exiting those games.

In the CPU, kinda not really a big jump, but DDR4 to DDR5 is. Yes the 9800X3D will perform better in gaming, but paired with the upgraded RAM you'll definitely have more potential. There's no guarantee it'll fix your exact issues (though they sound CPU related, though turning down settings would also help) but depending on your upgrade plans it definitely cannot hurt. It's largely personal preference but you seem fairly clued in as to what the benefits are so honestly if you're wanting to do it, then do it because we can argue the merits back and forth all day but it's still not a crazy decision. 13th or 14th gen to 9800X3D I might say different, unless your CPU died.
xLith@reddit
I noticed a difference on my 1% lows even at 4K when going from a 14900k to a 9800X3D at 4K on a 4080 Super. Not crazy but I can't say it's money well-spent either.
terriblestperson@reddit
As much as I like the 9800x3d... Yes. That's still a very powerful CPU, and you're moving onto a platform that's in mid-life.
If I were you, I'd try to improve my cooling and wait for AM6, which probably isn't that far away. A little over a year I'd bet.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Yeah... that's part of why I hesitate and ask for advice. It's only promise up until 2026. What if I decide to upgrade in 2027? That is course not a question you can answer.
terriblestperson@reddit
Also, if you upgrade to a 9800x3d now, you're going to be buying and using DDR5-6000 RAM. Ryzen 6 (e.g. 10800x3d) on AM5 is going to want faster RAM.
I upgraded to a 9800x3d earlier this year, and while I have no regrets, I also couldn't really have waited another year and a half since I was on a very old CPU.
Since you have the ability to wait, I would recommend continuing to wait. You probably have 2-3 years before the 12900K starts to hold you back for real.
If you upgrade your cooling situation (better case, better fans, or both), you can carry those upgrades on to your next build.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
True. I am wondering too if it is worthwhile upgrading my current case fans to some PWM ones. My current ones are some stock Fractal Design R5 and be quiet ones that run at 600 RPM (I think 140 sized fans though I cannot recall for sure).
terriblestperson@reddit
See if opening your case improves your performance, maybe? If it does, you might consider improving your airflow.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
In case if I haven't mentioned already, I've ordered a Thermalright LGA1700 contact frame. When I get the chance to put it on, I'll do some testing on that. If opening the case does improve air flow, would you recommend swapping all fans to PWM? I hear they tend to be better as all of my fans are not PWM.
terriblestperson@reddit
PWM vs 3-pin doesn't make a ton of difference in cooling, but the actual capabilities of fans (static pressure and airflow) can vary a lot. PWM fans do make a difference in noise, since they can run at lower speeds than 3-pin and can be controller more finely.
OGigachaod@reddit
I would start with a program called "park control" freeware from the guys that make process lasso, and set "prefer performant processors" for both short and long threads. This helped me with stutters on my 12700kf (I was getting stutters watching youtube)
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)

Process Lasso is overkill unless you have a 12 or 16 core x3D chip.

IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Well idk about that point. I only installed Process Lasso because I had a really old game that does not perform well on multiple cores as it was not design for multiple cores and so that way I can start the game on just one core and had it memorized each time without having to mess with task manager every single time I want to launch the game.

I swapped copper IHS + LM on the both of them, and tried multiple waterblocks to get a good fit, regardless if stock or modded getting a good mount - without a contact frame was so damn troublesome. Unfortunately, my system was already built and was being daily'd by the time the contact frame came out, but I'm sure they're a huge help
i did upgrade from an oc'd 12900k to a 9800X3D and also built an itx 7800X3D box, these X3D chips are the bees knees my man if all you do is game. It's crazy how effortless & efficient they are when it comes to gaming performance, especially the 7800X3D - i'm legit stunned by how quiet and cool you can get a killer gaming cpu inside an itx case
in my case, when i swapped my 4090 into a 9800X3D system - definite improvement in codmw3 @ 1080p over the 12900k, let the 4090 really stretch it's legs. I can't remember the exact numbers, but it was noticeable. Fwiw, i get like 400~420fps now with a 5090/9800X3D.

12900k here, I rarely experience a cpu bottleneck. And honestly could be anything, could be putting games on an hdd instead of ssd, could be my gpu with its 8 gb vram. Btw, if you're running halo infinite on an 8 gb gpu I would probably blame the gpu if you're running it on ultra.
A 9800x3d only offers like a 40% jump in performance. Not enough to justify a new rig. It performs like a ryzen 7700x or so in gaming.

I have a 5070 Ti, which is a 16 GB GPU so VRAM isn't a concern but it seems that in campaign or in Firefight where there are a lot of enemies/map loading I get stuttering.
While the 9800X3D is indeed not significant, I'm looking for better 1% and 0.1% lows.
JonWood007@reddit
Eh, with a 5070 ti its possible a 12900k can bottleneck it. I'd say most of my halo infinite issues are GPU related but youre using a GPU over twice as powerful as mine and if youre running 1080p you could induce a CPU bottleneck, especially on DDR4. Still, I have trouble believing the 12900k has trouble on halo infinite. I mean I could run that on a 7700k at 60+ generally on lower settings. My biggest problem with a 6650 XT is it's just not powerful enough for ultra, especially due to textures and VRAM. The game does stutter here and there on my machine but im pretty much convinced it's the GPU side of things. Also the game is weird, I notice if i change settings the game starts running a lot smoother. Like the game is just buggy and inconsistent. See how it runs on medium or so, if youre still having problems it could be the CPU, if not, I'd blame the game's code just being unoptimized.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I'm running usually at 165 fps ultra @ 1440p. It's really capable of that in regular multiplayer maps, but in campaign and firefight it seems to have issues with maintaining that and stuttering begins. But I'm just reading now that the game has gotten worse over the years and less optimized.
JonWood007@reddit
I dont play firefight but the campaign is open world and more demanding. And as you traverse the map new stuff has to load in. Im not sure a 9800X3D would help with that. I actually heard X3D CPUs struggle with that sort of stuff sometimes. Like theyre faster when stuff loads in, but before it all loads in it might struggle, idk. You might wanna do more research. Either way, having a 12900k and playing halo infinite theres no way id upgrade over that. LIke maybe its different if you run such a powerful GPU but honestly? This game was designed to run on quad cores. Any modern 8 core 16 thread CPU, or even 6 core 12 thread should be more than sufficient.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I think I read that the game engine apparently can use up to 50 threads. I notice or at least recall last time I looked in task manager, all cores and threads get used by the game. I don't think a more powerful GPU would necessarily help, but it also sounds to me based on what you said that a 9800X3D wouldn't help either. And considering the nature of the poor optimization of this game and the current hardware I have, it sounds unreasonable to upgrade anything over Halo Infinite.
JonWood007@reddit
Okay so it wasnt that hot in here, only 83F (so like 28C). So I did some testing.
I spawned in the southeastern part of the campaign map and flew around in a banshee trying to make stuff load in. On my normal custom settings of high with medium textures at 1080p, I was getting around 100 FPS, according to the frame counter I'd dip typically around 70-80, and MAYBE a spike here and there around 40s or 50s.
100% GPU bound, 25% CPU usage, CPU not pushed at all.
So...I turned everything to the lowest it would go and ran a 73% resolution scale, which is the lowest that would go. I started running probably around 180 FPS on average, dips down to maybe 100. And yeah, CPU usage only at 30%. Like, this game is NOT pushing the CPU, like at all. I'm totally GPU bound and struggling to manufacture a GPU bottleneck.
Run the game on ultra 1080p, this is where it gets a little more stuttery. 70 FPS, dips in 40s or 50s, but also some dips down to like 17 or 30 once in a while. It feels smooth where i dont notice them too much, but yeah, I'm not really finding many problems here CPU wise. Most of my problem seems VRAM. I'm running a 6650 XT with 8 GB VRAM at 1080p.
Heck, despite the elevated ambient temps, the 12900k is running like 65C TOPs. And that was the highest temp recorded.
Running 32 GB DDR5 @ 4800 MHz if you must know.
As such, my conclusion is that the CPU is unlikely to be the culprit here. it's possible that given you just have THAT good of a GPU, where you got 2-3x the power I do, maybe youre doing something where you eventually hit a CPU bottleneck, but based on my testing you should be getting hundreds and hundreds of FPS. Like, it should be crazy fast.
I do admit, this game can be weird. Sometimes I can load into it and it'll stutter more than it does other times. I tend to blame that on the GPU, not the CPU in my case. the 12900k feels like gross overkill for this game. I do know i had some CPU bottlenecks on my old 7700k at times, but even that could generally handle 60+ on low settings. The 12900k seems capable of 200+ FPS. So yeah, I wouldnt blame the CPU for performance issues here. There's something else going on with your system.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Ah I see. Thanks for the info, that actually means a lot and is really useful. I'd have to test some time, but I remember loading being the worst with flying vehicles like the Banshee and the Wasp; there were times the games had to pause just load in parts of the map. I just put an order in for a contact frame to help cool things down.
And yeah maybe, idk. This game is kinda inconsistent, but I did have an issue with Halo MCC and Halo Infinite where I had a BSoD "paged fault in nonpaged area" related to win32kbase.sys I believe was the file if I shut down the PC too quickly after exiting the game. It's not a thing I can exactly replicate easily either. idk, I never had a BSoD on this machine until I installed Windows 11 24H2 from a fresh installation like I always do when a new feature update comes out and that was months before I upgraded the GPU, but they were errors relating to other issues.
Idk when I upgraded this GPU, I also upgraded the RAM and PSU and I don't see anything in any sort of testing indicating that there is something wrong with any components.
JonWood007@reddit
Well you have an nvidia card, I used to run a 1060 with this game and would bsod from driver hangs. Game is just a hit mess. Could be windows, could be drivers.
The 12900k is hot but I'm running a thermalright phantom spirit. You said you have a dh15 iirc? Should have about the same cooling power. Maybe check to make sure it's installed right if you're throttling. This cpu can get onto the 70s-90s for me on a demanding game depending on ambient temperature but by that I mean like 76-78c in the winter (66-73f ambient) and around 90-91c around 90-95f ambient. I'd probably expect 83-86c if I were pushing it under current conditions.
But yeah I'd look into software like windows being borked by an update (it happens), driver issues, etc. Something is wrong if you're struggling. Save your money for an upgrade if it turns out to be hardware but it could very well be software.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
The Noctua cooler should be installed right. I had replaced the thermal paste recently, but before doing so I ran a stress test and noted the wattage and would peak at 218W and maintain 197W. After reapplying the paste, it peaked at 241W and maintained 220W.
After a week or two, it peaked down to 238W and maintained 217W. I feel like there's some limitation to the cooler and as well as the LGA1700 socket bending at hand making things worse on my side of things. I'm going to see how the Thermalright contact frame V2 changes things for me (was only $10 off Amazon). Maybe I won't hit 100C as much as I do occasionally hit 100C in gaming on at least one core (hey idk, maybe my thermal paste application could have been a shit job for all I know, but I heard usually even a bad application shouldn't vary by too much just as long as there is thermal paste there).
And maybe I could reinstall Windows. I felt that it is a good idea to install a fresh copy of Windows even for a GPU upgrade to ensure stability, but I didn't do it.
JonWood007@reddit
Take it from me when I say you should not be hitting 100C when gaming. Gaming doesnt take that much wattage and I rarely exceed 125-140W tops when gaming, even in a core heavy game. My winter temps peak around 77C, typical summer temps in the mid 80s, and on a really hot day I may go up to like 90ish. Something is wrong there. You should NOT be hitting 100C.
Either way on my motherboard I also dont see it use like all 241W unless I use cinebench. Most of the time it peaks around 175-200W even on most stress tests with me not hitting the thermal threshold. Again, cinebench is the only thing that induces true full power mode for me.
You shouldnt need to reinstall windows just for a GPU upgrade, using DDU to uninstall drivers should be enough. Still, windows is infamous for borking its own operating system from updates so that could be part of it.
But yeah something is seriously wrong with your PC somewhere. Idk what. If upgrading your CPU fixes it, the problem was with the components you replaced, but otherwise i suspect youre throttling and not getting your full performance for some reason. Something might also be unstable, possibly from overheating. It's generally recommended NOT to run CPUs at the TJmax all the time, ya know?
JonWood007@reddit
Yeah. Id go on and test my own setup on low/some unreasonably low resolution if it were cooler, but my rig is in a hot room with no AC and its peak heat of the day. Maybe tonight if I remember. But yeah, when halo infinite came out, the 12900k was the best CPU on the market and it cost $600. I blame the game for just being unoptimized if youre struggling with it.
JonWood007@reddit
This guy seems to have issues with a 7800X3D, which is just a little slower than a 9800X3D. Also has a similar GPU.
I'd just say the game is an unoptimized mess. Dont spend hundreds of dollars trying to fix a problem that might not even work.

12900KF to 9900X3D holy steady fps it was worth for me
devleesh@reddit
As an intel fanboy no you aren’t crazy, do it, I did. It’s a better CPU
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Yeah I was an Intel fanboy too, mostly because I have a YouTube channel with 15k+ subs and I did a lot of videos relating to using VMs. I won't disclose my channel for the sake of keeping myself private, but let's say Intel handled backwards compatibility way better which was necessary for my channel, but I no longer do this anymore nor do I create videos anymore. I'm willing to lose that for better gaming performance.
GladMathematician9@reddit
I wish I had upgraded/went X3D sooner. Linux 12900KF 4090 vs 9900X3D 7900XTX I get about 30fps more and more stable fps locked 1440P 180 on the X3D, had just one stutter am aircooled too in the new WoW raid. Am thinking to test 1440P UW next upgrade but I stayed on the lakes too long. 12900KF still tolerable experience but my bet is having both you'd play on the AM5 9800X3D more. New features are also available when you upgrade on motherboards, wifi7, 5gb lan etc. Friend gets 50-60C on 240 aio 9900X3D, air I range 45 to 70s under heavy load. Actually still have an old ssd hooked up to X3D really need to install nvmes have a great time X870E Nova 3.30 but picked up an Asus AYW X870 bundle sale, am also thinking to migrate my routine off 12900KF more. 9800X3D will certainly be cooler than 9900X3D.
Pattywhack_the_bear@reddit
I went from a 12700k to a 9800X3D. The biggest difference has been 1 and 0.1% lows. I have no regrets. YMMV.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Yeah that's part of what I am kind of after. Those 1% and 0.1% lows because that means less stuttering. Also keeping in mind that a 9800X3D is easier to cool. I don't want higher FPS necessarily, I just want more stable FPS.
GladMathematician9@reddit
X3D is just that more stable fps less dips. Replaced 12900KF with 9900X3D in April, no regrets.
Pattywhack_the_bear@reddit
That was exactly why I upgraded and I have no regrets.
GladMathematician9@reddit
You're not crazy but it's an upgrade, have 12900KF DDR5 to 9900X3D it's smoother raiding and steady fps, dips aren't as low. But have mainly been using 7900XTX Linux & 4090. CL30 ram now on both machines, was running 48gb cl36 on 12900KF, running DDR4 one good thing is it's mature low cas have a few cl16 kits around, DDR5 6000 cl30 ram it runs like a dream. My 12900KF runs fine sometimes I secondary gaming rig and multitask on it still though 9900X3D is a bit better. Probably not hundreds of dollars better but it is a cpu upgrade, felt worth if you play games that use X3D cache well and can budget it. 12900KF isn't horrible though some of my other alder lake rigs have issues to fafo with now after bios updates. AM5 X870E unneccessary has been great after fafoing with 12th gen.

Gutkin1127@reddit
upgrading to a 9800X3D makes a lot of sense for your use case:
You prioritize gaming smoothness, especially in heavy open-world scenarios. You’re tired of thermal management and voltage tuning headaches . You’d like to reduce your system’s noise and heat output.
If you’re able to afford the platform cost (CPU + B650/X670 board + DDR5), it will feel like a quality-of-life improvement more than just a pure FPS
Far-Glove-888@reddit
Yeah you're crazy for believing the mainstream narrative.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Not sure what you mean by that. I'm just asking, would it reduce stuttering and would it be easier to cool? Because no one has said otherwise. I've seen many responses and there are so many here who have switched from LGA1700 i7s and i9s to 9800X3Ds who said they saw improvements and I'm not seeing anyone who said anything against it. At this point, I'm wondering if anyone has anything against the 1% and 0.1% lows and the ease of cooling. I'm looking for evidence regarding the contrary.

UnexploredToilet@reddit
Not 100% relevant, but I’ve got a 9800x3d/Zotac solid OC 5090 combo, and my Mrs has a 7800x3d/astral 5090 OC and there is 100% a difference in certain games.
Primarily Spider-Man 2. My rig, with a far ‘inferior’ GPU gets quite a bit more FPS than the 800 quid more expensive pixel pusher.

Yes you are but you also seem very defensive about this idea, I'm not sure why you made this thread. If you're looking for validation, you won't find any. IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I'm not defensive about anything. I ask questions and try to get responses because I want to know more. I don't like making a decision without being fully informed. That's not being defensive, that's just trying to learn.

I upgraded two weeks ago from 12900k + 3080ti to 9800x3d and 5070ti. Performance in most games nearly doubled at 1440p ultrawide.
I currently play Dune, Monster Hunter Wilds and Pubg. I upgraded bc my nephews system broke down and he always gets my old hardware.
What you can and should do to maximize your 12900k is undervolting. Decrease P1 and P2 to 135W that is roughly 5% in performance but has a high impact on thermals.
Funnily enough my 12900k ran at 30 degree idle temp with a 420 arctic freezer AIO my 9800X3D runs at 40 degree with a 320 aio ^^

Unless you are legitimately the most uncoordinated or careless person, there’s little way you could possibly mess it up by using a contact frame. Just take your time. Look up videos to understand/visualize what you’ll do, super easy. Can you undervolt? Are your ddr4 timings optimized?
Ik you’re on air cooling but I have some feeling you should be able to play most games without thermal throttling. Contact frame can net easily 5-10c drop and then in extreme cases 15c. It’s such an easy win. I have 12900k but on 280mm aio setup, contact frame, x45 paste. With small UV and OC I havent seen above 80c during benchmarking at 243w sustained avg.
And just for anyone else, kryonaut is for like 6 months of use and then should be changed.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Contact frame sounds easy indeed, but I read about how annoying it can be at times to get it right (you have to screw it on just right, not too tight, not too loose) heard people had to do it multiple times to get it right and it sounds like more of a headache than I want to deal with.
I used to undervolt and had a nice stable undervolt for three years and no issue. All the sudden Windows 11 24H2 came along and that undervolt became unstable.
-Gnarly@reddit
That’s interesting hah about the win11 install.
Yeah it’s another step for sure, but if you follow the steps that Gamer Nexus does, it should be good.

Whats your hard drive m2 /ssd or just HDD . Most games are terrible when I comes to multicore performance so you may some gains if you OC THE first 2 cores then leave rest depending on your mobo , also check you temps when u notice the spikes would help to it could be its turboing then dropping due to temps hitting peak thermal limit . [ you could also disable turbo to see if that is the problem if the throttling is causing the problem when it swaps back and forth .

IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Indeed the 9800X3D is hot, it doesn't appear to get as hot as an i9. maybe gets up to 160W at worst meanwhile my i9 hits 197W in gaming loads and it thermal throttles and doesn't thermal throttle at 160W. I imagine a 9800X3D would be better since it doesn't bend too.
The_soulprophet@reddit
I’d get a 360 AIO and repast and try again. I’d also try a 14600k. Still cheaper than going AM5.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I looked at 360 AIOs and wanted an Arctic Freezer III. Turns out it wouldn't fit my case and there's so much difficulty getting an AIO to fit in my case without tossing out my hard drives entirely. To get a really good AIO like the Arctic Freezer to fit, that would mean I'd need to buy a new case that would support hard drives mounted in a different way and at that point, I'd rather spend the money on a new motherboard and more efficient CPU than spending money trying to support my three year old CPU that would one day in the next two years or so require upgrading.
The_soulprophet@reddit

I did this upgrade with a 4090 and it was a noticeable increase in performance on games. Though I do miss the extra cores, it has justified itself. You'll have to get new motherboard and the CPU so you should be sticking with AMD for the future in that case. Also temps won't necessarily be better. I have a custom loop with 3 360 rads and direct die and it can still peak pretty high ~80c sometimes. They load up the power into this chip.
Mytaco999@reddit
So just a week ago I upgraded from my 11700kf to a 9800x3d (which also meant ddr5 ram upgrade too), but have kept the same 3080 10gb GPU (cause I ain't payin those GPU prices right now), and I have found that my issues with stuttering in games has gone down dramatically.
My main game I've been playing since the upgrade is cyberpunk (I do play Halo infinite a lot too normally, just haven't since the upgrade). I ran benchmarks on both systems and found that my fps hasn't increased while playing at ultra with medium ray tracing on a 1440x3440 display, but it's almost eliminated all the stutters and hitches I was getting in it.
I was also able to play Halo 2 in MCC with anniversary graphics and didn't have the same issues I had been having
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Yeah Halo Infinite and MCC are what I play a lot of. The average FPS is totally fine that I'm having, but it's those darn 1% and 0.1% lows that get me.
Mytaco999@reddit
Well as a sample size of 1, I can say upgrading to the 9800x3d for the exact same reasons you described has fixed those issues for me lol
Sea_Joke_805@reddit
Crazy as fuck hentai looks the same regardless
ulixForReal@reddit
What you are describing could be shader compilation stutter, and if that is the case no processor can make it go away.
Naturalhighz@reddit
I feel like your problem is more the cooler than the cpu
Sumeung-Gai@reddit
If you are not limiting frame rate In 1080p and some 1440p titles, it is a fact that this upgrade would improve performance, including frametime stability and 1% lows. You may experience improved frame pacing and lows in some 4k titles but will likely not see much of a raw increase in fps.
If you have the money and have the itch to tinker... I know I'd do it.
shball@reddit
It's a better CPU, but for most games it's not going to be as noticeable.
You'll primarily see improvements based on CPU in Horde shooters and strategy games.
The 9800X3D is better and can probably last you 10+ years based on performance alone, whilst being quite power efficient.
This_Suit8791@reddit
Maybe your cpu is degraded or could have just been the thermal paste, either way a 9800x3d would perform better in gaming for you. It’s up to you if you can justify the cost.
ComfortableUpbeat309@reddit
No 12 gen did not suffer from the vshift issue
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I recently replaced the thermal paste and I saw improvement where it can achieve higher wattage than before, but thermal throttling still occurs.
FARMBAR77@reddit
Yo do it, 9800x3d performs so well you will have a benefit in doing so. Lots of games benefit from cpu performance
Any-Friend-7041@reddit
I went from 13600k to 9800x3D and do not regret it.
jaayyh@reddit
I went from the 12900k to the 9800X3D and I have no regrets. I mainly play a game thats really processor heavy and I’ve been enjoying the ‘upgrade’ a lot! More fps and much cooler
Pursueth@reddit
No, that is a massive upgrade for gaming.
disgruntledempanada@reddit
What games do you play?
I feel like your main improvement will be 1% lows going to the 9800X3D from the 12900K. If you find yourself in CPU bottlenecked conditions, for sure go for it. But it really depends on your workflow.
For me going from the 5900X to the 5800X3D made a drastic improvement, but I play racing simulators in VR and frame drops are horrific to experience in that scenario. 5800X3D was worth its weight in gold, and had a lot higher performance on average too.
But if I was just playing regular games on a flat screen, there'd be almost no reason to make the jump. A majority of the time you'll be GPU limited in most games, particularly at 4k. The games I play just happen to be incredibly CPU dependent, and frame drops in VR cause motion sickness and wrecks so it was important for me to move to an X3D chip.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Usually Halo MCC, Halo Infinite, and Forza Motorsport. Halo Infinite, especially in campaign and firefight I feel some CPU limitation. The average FPS is fine and my 12900k can make it there, but it's the 1% and 0.1% lows I feel that need improvement.
Sinister_Crayon@reddit
Honestly, you probably won't notice a massive difference except in your electric bill LOL. Even then the GPU is probably going to be more of a power suck and heat source than the CPU.
Having said all that, I recently did a similar move from a 12700k with an overclock to a stock clock 9700X and actually couldn't be happier. My whole operating system feels snappier, my 1% lows seem improved due to not hitting thermal problems... yeah I've been very happy. I'm more productivity than gaming but the even the much maligned 9700X is doing better in part due to significantly better single-thread performance.
I did the move because I was tired of battling the heat from my rig too; the 12700K is a good CPU don't get me wrong but will pump out a LOT of heat under load. 360mm AIO cooling it would do well but I could hit 90C under load very quickly no matter what I did with my fan curves. The 9700X on the same AIO seems to be positively cruising under just about any workload I give it.
The DDR5 memory no doubt helps too. I was triggered in part to do the upgrade last week when I started having the classic symptoms of CPU bending; basically an entire memory channel on my 12th gen system is now unusable and so it was either live with single-channel RAM or just bite the bullet and upgrade. Before that I had been considering a 14700 or 14900 despite the heat issues as an upgrade to muddle through for the next couple of years, but when the board took a shit I decided I was done with Intel for now. Between the DDR5 RAM and AM5 having legs for a few more years and therefore a few more CPU upgrades I figured that was the direction to go.
HTH.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Yeah it's the thing: I'm not looking for extra performance. I just want to improve the 1% and 0.1% lows. And I feel like this space heater of an i9 is too much and too difficult to cool. I wouldn't mind dropping some cores and getting a 9800X3D so it cools better. idk if I'll ever actually do this because Zen 6 looks kinda interesting, but also there's always "the next greatest thing" coming out.
Sinister_Crayon@reddit
Agreed, and I struggled with that a bit too. But I decided that with AM5 having a long runway I can be happy on Zen 5 and upgrade in a couple of years to the then state-of-the-art, and in the meantime save for a GPU refresh when prices are sane LOL.
There's ALWAYS going to be bigger and better. This motherboard will probably last me quite a while, and I have two more DIMM slots if I need them :)
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
I feel that the 9800X3D (and AM5) will probably be better in the long run against the 12900k in gaming and improving FPS stability. I just recently upgraded to the 5070 Ti so I think I'm good on GPU for the next three years at least.
vanillasky513@reddit
i went from a 13700k to a 9800x3d + 4080 super and the difference is huge when it comes to 1% lows. go for it
Evening_Ticket7638@reddit
Before you spend the money, turn off hyperthreading to get better 1% lows.
ChiefBig420@reddit
Def not crazy, just smart lol
EeyoreOutrageous@reddit
30 mb L3 cache < 96 mb L3 cache 1% low and stability will see a major uplift
TheKitler@reddit
Do you use your PC for just gaming? You could disable hyperthreading, which will drop the temps quite a bit to prevent throttling.
An undervolt will also help.
Burgemeester@reddit
If you are mainly gaming there is literally no reason to go for an intel cpu
Merrick222@reddit
It depends more on the games you play and resolution you have, and what FPS you want.
I switched from 5800X3D to the 9800X3D in December 2024. I have a 4080 GPU.
I wanted it for BG3 and Space Marines 2.
Space Marines 2 went from around 85 FPS to 130 FPS from updating my CPU/Mobo/Ram.
Well worth it for me, I play at 3440x1440p DLSS (using new model 4) Performance.
Cold-Inside1555@reddit
It won’t help for loading parts of the map, or at least not typical x3d level of help, but does reduce stuttering when there’s a lot going on. Overall justifiable if you do want improvements, it will increase average if you are not very GPU bound, and 1%low significantly in most cases.
Elitefuture@reddit
https://www.techspot.com/review/2915-amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d/
In 1080p, it looks like the 1% lows of the 9800x3d are 40.6% faster. Idk how that translates to 1440p or 4k. It probably depends heavily on the game. Look up a comparison on the games you specifically play the most.
Zz_GORDOX_zZ@reddit
You're not crazy you're on the right path 🤓
Low-Blackberry-9065@reddit
If you've identified the problem as being a Cpu limitation and you can't improve your cpu performance enough with better cooling/OC then sure, there is nothing better for gaming than a 9800x3d (as far as CPUs go). Even though technically the 9950x3d can be a few percent faster in some games it's not worth the extra price.just for gaming.
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Yeah I feel like a 9800X3D can be less of a cooling nightmare. I only got a 12900k because I used to render videos a lot and it helped a lot with rendering, but I gave up on doing videos a year ago. I feel like a 9800X3D is all I need. It's more efficient and easier to cool. I don't think I want a power hungry space heater of a Core i9 or Ryzen 9 ever again.
kylegallas69@reddit
You won't notice a difference unless your a 1080p gamer needs 400fps. 1440p or 4k you will get a 5% boost
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
Wouldn't it reduce some hitching and stuttering though? Not necessarily for the FPS for me, but I hear it has good improvements over the 12900k in 1% and 0.1% lows which can mean reduced stuttering.
AMPCgame@reddit
I'm on a 12900KF with DDR4 ram and a 3090, and I don't notice any weird issues playing 1440p high settings with games in my library. I'm using a 360mm Thermalright AIO and temps don't go above 50°C.
KhandakerFaisal@reddit
How's your airflow and fan setup, if you're using a traditional case?
IWillAssFuckYou@reddit (OP)
My case is a Fractal Design R5. I have two intakes on the front, an intake on the side and one exhaust on the rear. They're all non-PWM fans.
