The worst place in your city?

So in Manchester we have Piccadilly gardens, that to tourists sounds nice, but in reality it’s full of the local crack heads, drug dealers, and local “gangsters” (I say that term VERY lightly) anyway what’s the equivalent to Piccadilly Gardens in your cities?
No_Potato_4341@reddit
I'm from Sheffield and we have an area called Page Hall. It's truly awful. Genuinely like an open tip.
Educational_Cow111@reddit
Last year there was a war between students in the main school of that area lol, like a full on battle
The_Yellow_King@reddit
Brighton. Not too many bad areas tbh, but Whitehawk has the worst rep. It's not even that bad.
Vsparsons227@reddit
I hear Moulseconbe would give it a run for its money.
NoPalpitation9639@reddit
Hard agree, Moulescombe is dreadful. My sister stayed here during uni, every neighbour was some sort of minor criminal
The_Yellow_King@reddit
Very much so. Both areas are about as rough as Brighton gets (ie not very).
Haggis161@reddit
Kilburn. London where I live now.
Govan. Glasgow where I used to live.
boredsittingonthebus@reddit
Govan's not great, but I'd rather live there than Easterhouse or Ruchazie.
Treepixie@reddit
Haha I used to live in Kilburn ten years ago has it not improved at all? I was going to say Archway..
mrsbergstrom@reddit
Kilburn has stubbornly remained shite. Archway is much more tolderable these days
Haggis161@reddit
Nope, crackheads every 10 metres. My mate lives there but I live in SW, so it's somewhat nicer. Toward Wimbledon way lol.
buckfast1994@reddit
Govan isn’t the worst anymore. Govanhill however…
earthw2002@reddit
Seems to be a bit of theme here…
pcor@reddit
I lived in Manchester when going to uni in the early 10s, and Piccadilly gardens didn't seem too bad. Was I oblivious or has it got worse?
mrsbergstrom@reddit
it's gotten a lot worse
babeh9@reddit (OP)
lol I’m sure there’s a fair few YouTube videos you can get into
Venomenon-@reddit
Birmingham
In the city centre specifically its Dale End, although they’ve knocked a lot of the buildings down recently
Acrobatic-Ant-UK@reddit
Catford.
GNRevolution@reddit
Hell, there used to be a gun shop in the middle of the one way system that always looked completely sketchy.
babeh9@reddit (OP)
I worked in sidcup in the early 00’s and went through Catford haha!
Zxxzzzzx@reddit
So many people say harehills in Leeds is the worst part, and they may be right. But gipton is nearly as bad and it's got a shitty name.
Hare hills sound whimsical.
Gip town just sounds like a place that makes you puke.
Missbhavin58@reddit
Leicester here. I'd say the city centre sadly. Full of drinkers and druggies and delivery riders. Shops are rubbish. Really don't enjoy going anywhere more
Twisted_paperclips@reddit
To fit the question, I'd go with Bede Island or Castle Gardens. Drink, drugs, stabbings, rapes....
No_Potato_4341@reddit
What about St Matthews? That's gotta be worse than the city centre surely.
Missbhavin58@reddit
About the same tbh . My son lived in the centre for a couple of years and hated it. But yeah st Mathews is not nice. I wouldn't walk round after dark
sossighead@reddit
I live in a village.
Generally the worst thing that happens is you get local teenagers riding their bikes the wrong way down the one way street leading up to the high street.
Sometimes the umpires at the local cricket club get their LBW decisions wrong and there’s been accusations of favouritism at the WI baking contest.
nasted@reddit
It’s a common knowledge among fans that the Upside Down in Stranger Things is based on The Nether in Minecraft. But did you know that The Nether in Minecraft was based on Netherfield in Milton Keynes?
PiotrGreenholz01@reddit
I'm from just outside Sevenoaks. There's nowhere grim I can think of. All the drugs in the area are probably of the highest quality & are being enjoyed by exceedingly wealthy people living in large, sumptuous houses. Or by kids at the private school (which has a helipad) absolutely wallowing in privilege.
Actually, the worst place is probably the Nando's. Which is perfectly fine.
First-Lengthiness-16@reddit
Miles Platting is surely worse? I grew up down south and studied it as an example of urban degeneration.
I am in Sheffield and as the other person said, Page Hall is pretty grim
Beneficial-Yogurt444@reddit
I live on a council estate In miles platting n it isn't as bad as people think at all
First-Lengthiness-16@reddit
Really? Our geography teacher had pictures put up on the white board and we were told it was the British equivalent of a favela!
We obviously understood the hyperbole but even now when I think shithole I think “Miles Platting”.
It’s funny how much of an impact teachers can have on young minds.
Beneficial-Yogurt444@reddit
it used to be rougher back in the day but isn't the british equivalent of a favela ffs and I wouldn't even call it a shit hole much worse places around
Imposseeblip@reddit
Luton road in the Medway towns.
Electric_Death_1349@reddit
The equivalent of Piccadilly Gardens in Cardiff would be Queen Street - formally the main shopping hub, but now increasingly dilapidated with an abundance of American sweet shops and where the city’s homeless population like to congregate to drink, take drugs, and harass members of the public.
The worst suburb is Ely, which for decades has been a dumping ground for every problem family the local authority is forced to take responsibility for, so it’s a shithole of antisocial behaviour, petty crime and periodic rioting.
BadaBingSoprano@reddit
Formerly, for what it's worth.
airbagsofdeath@reddit
It is a shame about Pic.Gardens because on a sunny day it's lovely to just sit on the grass and while the hours away, have done it lots.. Everytime I go it gets and seems worse.
LiedCopulatedDied@reddit
If you think Piccadilly Gardens is the worst part of Manchester you must be fairly middle class.
babeh9@reddit (OP)
I should probably say city centre Manchester, rather than GM if that helps
mr-dirtybassist@reddit
Thankfully, I don't live in a city
RaxPomana@reddit
Coventry
I could leave it at that but Hill Fields in particular, so many stabbings, shootings, drug raids. Glad I moved
No_Potato_4341@reddit
Coventry itself isn't that bad imo. But Hillfields specifically is grim.
AffectionateFig9277@reddit
I used to live off Sheil Road in Liverpool, famous from the BBC doc “Sex for four pounds.” There’s a “Jonny alley” which if you don’t know what that means, jonnys are condoms. And they’re all full lol. I once found a fleshlight on the street in broad daylight. I might even have a picture of it on my camera roll still. If you don’t know what that is, don’t google it on your work laptop.
Humble_Consequence13@reddit
The Meadows in Nottingham is very much not what it sounds.
No_Potato_4341@reddit
I found Hyson Green worse
Humble_Consequence13@reddit
It might be but it doesn't have the same connotations as a meadow.
