Anything that's an amalgamation of small things you can eat with your hands that would normally be sides or snacks. I'd say your description sounds more like a picky tea to me, but I'd count your partners one as well. Picky teas are normally to use up things so they're often quite random!

Nah mate, that’s not a picky tea — that’s a tapas starter with commitment issues. A real picky tea is what happens when your mum can't be arsed to cook but still lays out a buffet like it’s Christmas Eve for no reason. We’re talking: Cocktail sausages Pork pies Cheese chunks (minimum two types) Pickled onions or gherkins Buttered bread Maybe a mini quiche if you’re feeling posh Crisps — always crisps Bit of salad? Sure, but only as decoration.

I concede. Buffet yes. Picky tea, I suppose, whatever you have in the fridge, within reason, I mean M&S chilli con carne does not constitute a picky tea! See, I'd quite happily have some baguette lathered in butter, bit of cheese, pickle, bit of sliced meat maybe if some left over. Each to their own!

Picky tea involves random bits of stuff that you just happen to have in the house, so technically if you had some random garlic bread/wedges, a bit of salad, and a jar of olives in the fridge, your partner's tea could be a picky tea. However, if you are putting effort in preparing the garlic bread/wedges/salad, it's not a picky tea. (For clarity, if your dinner is made exclusively of leftovers, it's leftovers tea. If it's a mix of leftovers and other ready-to-eat pantry/cupboard/fridge staples, or entirely of pantry/cupboard/fridge staples, it's picky tea.)

We had a picky dinner tonight for the kids and it included: Hummus, carrot and cucumber sticks, mango chunks, peaches, a couple of sausage rolls, some spinach pancakes I made earlier in the week and a small bit of left over banana bread. Oh and my daughter had ham too! For me picky dinner is just putting random stuff together that doesn’t really need cooking and can be easily eaten and prepared.

I feel like it shouldn’t be cooked. I mean, it can have been cooked in the past (raw sausage rolls are not good for longevity) but it shouldn’t need cooking before eating. Heating is allowed but only because it’s optional/.

For me it's something like: * Pork pie, or Gala/Grosvenor Pie, perhaps a Scotch egg * Cold meats * A couple of cheeses * Something like cocktail sausages, those breaded chicken bites etc. * Crusty bread * Maybe salad items like cherry tomatoes, or something from a jar like olives or beetroot This is what I'd call a "salad tea".

For me it’s things like ham, breadsticks, sausage rolls like you said, some salad bits like tomatoes / cucumber / lettuce, pickled onions for sure, and maybe some crackers with butter. In no world would I ever put anything hot like garlic bread or chips on my picky tea !!!
