Canadian here. Why did the two men cut down the Sycamore gap tree?
Posted by thermal7@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 247 comments
I just learned about the Sycamore tree being cut down, and something about it gives me a deep sense of sadness. Both that such a beautiful part of nature was destroyed, and the senselessness of it.
I'm trying to understand why two grown men did this. Were there any reasons given?
Thank you, Vancouver, Canada
Specialist-Sky1415@reddit
Because they're total complete and utter fucking morons with nothing better to do
Scattered97@reddit
Because they were cunts. Some people just are that, and normal people like us can't understand them.
Messterio@reddit
The only answer needed!

r/Glasgow for all your swearing and creative insult needs
Informal-Tour-8201@reddit
You don't spend your time either here or on Ask Australia, then
Messterio@reddit
Ha damn you , that’s another sub I need to follow now! I always assume when an Aussie calls me a cunt or a bastard it’s a term of endearment!
Fantastic_Flamingo30@reddit
It probably depends on the situation.
Informal-Tour-8201@reddit
It's nuanced. Some cunts are good cunts and some are just cunts, you know?
Soggy-Bluebird-5210@reddit
I came to give this exact answer. "Because theyre cunts"
LittleSadRufus@reddit
Yes my money's on them being misanthropic arseholes - possibly resentful of tourists filling up their roads - who saw how much pleasure the tree gave to visitors, and so destroyed it out of pure spite.
And it would have been an effort. There is no quick route to Sycamore Gap, and they had to take tools with them on foot. It was not a spur of a moment decision.
fjf1085@reddit
What was the deal with the 16 year old and 60 year old they also said were involved initially but ended up being let go?
pajamakitten@reddit
No need to guess, that is what the trial proved. They were drunk and decided to chop it down for a laugh.
Top_Schedule_7693@reddit
That is absolutely NOT what the trial showed as it was planned ahead of time by two non locals who scoped it out ahead of time. The 'we were drunk' was one of their lawyer's defenses, yet messsaging showed they planned it well ahead of time. They were drunk at the time but sober cunts when they planned it.
StatlerSalad@reddit
There's more to it than drunken shenanigans though - they had to travel a fair distance, first by car/truck and then a trek across quite rough country, carrying all the tree felling equipment. That's plenty of time to sober up.
I'm not saying alcohol wasn't involved. But it was pre-meditated.
Fragrant_Heart1894@reddit
what tools? 2 drunk men and a saw, ( chain saw heavy) but if strong, just old fashioned tree saw and some time...
that is all it took!
martzgregpaul@reddit
Listen to their messages to each other. They are both INCREDIBLY stupid too
Nervous-Economy8119@reddit
What’s the gist of their messages?
martzgregpaul@reddit
Gloating mostly.

Savanarola79@reddit
There is a lot of antisocial behaviour in the UK. Various theories abound as to why.
burnsidechar@reddit
I know this is old but if this speaks to you still, look into the golden spruce. Its a little more local and it still makes my mom tear up. Fuck that man for cutting down something so beautiful.
Guitars-Cars-Art-Guy@reddit
An absolute pair of stupid cunts indeed.
It really annoys me that after committing such a heinous, senseless and utterly selfish crime they only received a sentence of 4 years and 3 months and will be released “no later than 40% of the way through the sentence“. So basically they’ll be in prison for less than 2 years. People serve much longer sentences for doing much less.
I don’t know if I’d have felt any less anger if they actually had some kind of grievance or reason for doing what they did (probably not) and I realise that there are sentencing guidelines which a judge has to adhere to but I really think these morons should have had to serve at least 10 years in an actual prison.
Ancient trees are some of the oldest and most incredible living things that we have on this planet and this incident has had such a negative impact on so many people.
Puzzled-Ring-167@reddit
Absolutely 110% agree. Sentences were pathetic considering they continually told lie after lie . Judges need to live in the real world.
G30fff@reddit
They basically did it because, like a lot of people, they have no sense of empathy and didn't understand the value of the tree to other people; and therefore also didn't understand the likely consequences - and so they thought the entertainment value of cutting it down would be worth any possible upset caused.
Recently, a cathedral had a nesting pair of falcons on the roof, with a webcam installed, filming the eggs as they were about to hatch. Many people were watching, hoping to see the falcon chicks poke through their shells only for some bloke's size 9s to hove into view and stamp down on the eggs. What can you say about that? Zero empathy bordering on sociopathy.
CardboardHero7@reddit
That is no bordering on sociopathy, it is an almost perfect definition of sociopathy
Talysn@reddit
They understood the value people placed on it, thats why they did it.
they did not cut down some random tree, they specifically chose this one and went out of their way to travel to it, and destroy it.
they did it because it was special to people.

Thanks for the update.
Deliberate or not, he belongs in prison.
Glittering-Sink9930@reddit
You think someone should go to prison for accidentally stepping on some eggs?
FridayGeneral@reddit
Which part of "Deliberate or not, he belongs in prison" do you not understand?
G30fff@reddit
I don't know but I don't think so
Jayatthemoment@reddit
Wow. It’s so hard to understand how someone would decide to climb on a roof (presumably high up) to murder baby animals and wreck some pretty wholesome fun. I understand why somebody might steal eggs to make money, but just destroying a nest for fun? What goes wrong with people? Very low IQ, combined with a desperate need for validation from equally worthless people?
ohnobobbins@reddit
It’s not always low IQ. Some people are just terrible.
G30fff@reddit
Well like I said I think it's just lack of empathy. No empathy for the animals, no empathy for other people who will be upset, so many people just don't really believe in other people. It's just about what they want, what they can get, sometimes without being caught.
Most of us do not want to hurt other people or animals mainly because we empathise with them. We understand their pain and don't want to be the cause of it. If you don't have that it's like a super-power that allows you to be a massive bastard.
But you may disagree
G30fff@reddit

Ecstatic-World1237@reddit
They might not understand the value of the tree to other people but they knew it was considered valuable. The motivation of many of these seemingly mindless acts is spite. Why people steal a bike just to trash it and dump it. Like than man and the eggs. It's deliberate malice.
I wonder how they'll fare in jail.
G30fff@reddit
Yeah I don't doubt that but isn't malice and spite the other side of empathy? Either way I see it everywhere. Malice is a good word actually. Malice, nihilism, selfishness, stupidity.
mishaxz@reddit

Active_Arugula_7079@reddit
Its because we live here and the UK is full to bursting with them.
TrueAgency8491@reddit

Puzzled-Ring-167@reddit
I along with my partner and dog were fortunate to visit this awesome site in 2015 . We took a 50 mile drive to it on a beautiful day . Once we reached it we had a tranquil picnic . It was so stunning and special that it almost felt like that this world famous tree had welcomed us personally on our long journey by providing us much needed sun shade . We must of stopped about 3 hours by the tree and personally I could easily of stopped longer.
To answer your question as to why they cut it down, I could only tell you this which I feel and believe to be their reason. While I was there with my hand touching this iconic tree , a brief negative thought had entered my mind which I quickly dismissed. If someone wanted to , they could easily make national and maybe even international media headlines and have a sort of sick global recognition of notoriety , then all they have to do is come back with a chainsaw and fell this famous tree . Only a cruel indifferent attention seeking individual could follow through to lay claim to such a heinous act which unfortunately seemed to be the case 8 years later in 2023.
Morrit99@reddit
They probably won't tell anyone. Wait 10 years and there will be a book.
As far as I can make out, they did it for the internet clout, their texts to each other boasted about it, as released during court, so I think they were just looking for 5 minutes of fame, instead got jail time.
Personally, I don't think they anticipated the level of backlash it espoused. Proud to be British on that front. It brought people together In a time of trouble in the UK.
harbourwall@reddit
I can see it serialised in the Guardian now...
Casting them as artists staging an intervention, the vandals' act becomes a strike against Britain’s sentimental self-mythology. This tree, endlessly photographed, endlessly mythologised, had become a heritage comfort blanket. By removing it, the “artists” forced the country to confront how much emotional stability it delegates to scenery and totems inherited from more confident eras.
In this interpretation, the gesture carries an implicit manifesto: modern Britons no longer deserve the icons and inheritance left to them by previous, better, generations. A society that treats its past as a backdrop rather than a responsibility, that fetishises rural beauty while eroding the social and political structures that once gave it meaning, forfeits the right to its symbols. The tree falls not only because someone swung a chainsaw, but because the culture around it had already forgotten how to value anything beyond the performative.
Historical iconoclasts often justified their actions by claiming that symbols had ossified into idolatry. A painting, a shrine, a statue could become a lie: preserving the illusion of virtue long after the society that produced it had drifted away from those virtues. Breaking the object exposed the gap between professed values and lived reality.
The Sycamore Gap felling plays out in a similarly uncomfortable register. The instant, furious, and moralistic outcry that followed echoes the reactions that greeted smashed icons during the Reformation or the English Civil War. People mourned not just the object but the sense of stability it represented. The public rage showed just how deeply the symbol had been carrying the emotional weight of a society anxious about its present and uncertain of its future. It said more about Britain than any artistic work of the last decade.
On that note, I'm off to the masturbatory coffee shop with Hugo. Where's my scarf?

It reminded me of the senseless idiocy followed by public back lash similar to the lady who put the cat in the bin
OSUBrit@reddit
It's been 15 years and we're still talking about it. I don't think anyone would have seen that coming.
h00dman@reddit
I remember for a few weeks after that happened, you could be reading something on Wikipedia about a famous historical figure, or a villain from a TV show, and at the end of their biography section would be "They also put a cat in a bin."
BrieflyVerbose@reddit
Have you seen them? It would be a colouring book.
Jamericho@reddit
It would have to be a lineless colouring book as there’s no chance they’d be able to colour within any.

I'm pretty sure that in the text, they exchanged one of them mentioned how viral it had gone and were predicting it would be on ITV news by the end of the day.

It’s so sad that the tree was 200 years old and some scruffy scrote cut it down for a bit of fame well no amount of prison time is enough for this pair
Powerful_Analyst1786@reddit
I'm an American and I'm still sad about the senselessness of it. Idiots like these guys ruin everything for everyone else, probably to make everyone as miserable as they are. Very similar to a guy here that pushed over an ancient balancing stone in a national park for no reason but that he could.
Actual_Homework_9110@reddit
These guys are the equivalent of MAGAs in the US. Disrespectful, selfish and incapable of accepting responsibility for their own actions. Lowlifes are everywhere. Unfortunately, normal people have to breathe the same air as these kinds of human garbage.
Samuel-J-D@reddit
While I do agree with you on how you feel about these two "men", I also know for a fact, that your parents can't wait for you to move out of their house.
Actual_Homework_9110@reddit
Oh dear, if you think the MAGA cult mentality is “politics” I’ve got news for you. It’s a vile sickness of disrespect, irrational hatred and violence that permeates our cultures and transcends politics. And, I’m a 67 year old well-informed woman who sees what is happening to our world.
Samuel-J-D@reddit
...why go there? You really got nothing else to compare it to? The UK and the US have nothing to do with each other politically. Are you 12?
Ill-Basil2863@reddit
Yobs. I worry for them when they get out of prison
Samuel-J-D@reddit
Why?
Ill-Basil2863@reddit
Because of the sheer amount of people outraged by their actions.
Samuel-J-D@reddit
I wouldn't worry for them. They knew what they were doing. I dont think harm will come to them as long as they dont brag about it in any pubs. Though they sound like the type who would. So who knows?
W51976@reddit
Hardly worth doing jail time over though. Rapists and murderers get less. Something is seriously wrong.
Samuel-J-D@reddit
Justice served. The end.
ResplendentBear@reddit
Really, any examples of an adult getting less than 4 years for murder?
DesmondCartes@reddit
It was just banter mate. People pretend to care about it, but... It's just the typical cyclical communal outrage/catharsis that Brits need because they're all so reserved and passive aggressive - they need something to collectively tut about.
Samuel-J-D@reddit
You sound like you know these two personally. Family? Can see how youd be related.

Not to excuse the behaviour (it makes me so fucking sad that they did such a senseless and harmful thing), but there's a very widespread feeling of hostility and meaninglessness in the UK at the moment. People act so selfishly without thought or (usually, though not in this case) consequences.

fireeyedboi@reddit
Paddington doesn’t feel as bad somehow though.
AlephMartian@reddit
Maybe because it wouldn’t take 500 years to regrow the Paddington statue.
fireeyedboi@reddit
You could however many years you like but it definitely won’t grow back 😀
Any-Web-3347@reddit
It is shooting again from the base. It might or might not grow strongly enough to be gradually shaped into a single-trunk tree. But we won’t live to see it looking mostly like it did.
fireeyedboi@reddit
I meant the Paddington statue.
Any-Web-3347@reddit
Oh yes! I doubt that Paddington is shooting from the base 😁
priiizes9091@reddit
Exactly. They blamed the booze and bravado. Although it took a lot of planning and several back and forths to get everything ready to cut down that tree. So in conclusion, they’re just massive tw*ts.
Any-Web-3347@reddit
Yeh, couldn’t have just been a drunken dare. That sort of thing has to be possible there and then. They talked about looking forward to the social media reaction. And in that, they succeeded, possibly a bit more than they bargained for.
WoodSteelStone@reddit
I get the impression they somehow thought people would think they were cool and would applaud their idiocy.
Triplen01@reddit
I reckon it's a uniquely British thing. To do things for a laugh, then shrug when asked why you've done that with "dunno, funny innit"

There was some evidence one of them (the younger one that looks like he's been lobotomised) had a bit of a thing about the tree and had previously sized it out and kept the measuring string. He had also cut down a tree to commemorate the birth of his first child, and the Sycamore Gap tree was cut down 12 days after the birth of the second child so draw your own conclusions. Locals describe the pair of ****s as 'the man with no friends teamed up with the man with no brains'.
172116@reddit
That is so weird. I could sort of understand of he'd used the wood for a piece of furniture, but just chopping it down for the sake of it? Planting a tree for the birth of a child is a bit more normal!

I imagine they never had good male role models growing up, were never taught boundaries or discipline, never learnt right from wrong, probably think climate change is a hoax, thought they would piss off "all the right people"...
They also probably spend most days cutting down mature trees simply because they're inconvenient to whoever hired them, so don't see any value in nature other than in destroying it.
NeedCake707@reddit
Because people don't give a fuck. I hate how detached we are from nature as a country
FridayGeneral@reddit
It has nothing to do with "people" generally, we are talking about two specific criminals. And they did it precisely because they knew it would cause outrage, because "people" do give a fuck. They wanted this power.
The fact they got four years for their crime suggests the opposite; that as a country we value nature greatly and are deeply attached to it.
Phishstixxx@reddit
Scum. Subhuman scum.
Onetap1@reddit
If you ever find out, let us know.
My theory is that it was mindless vandalism. Why do people vandalize toilets, smash up bus shelters, key random cars, etc., etc., ad nauseam?
FridayGeneral@reddit
That does have a reason though, albeit a terrible one. They do it as a tiny act of defiance, to feel a small sense of power, exerting control over something/someone. This is to compensate for a lack of authority in their own lives.
So someone who has no power or authority in their normal life, for example teenagers or the deprived underclass, will vandalise something, or even drop a piece of litter. Someone else has to clean up their mess, so they feel a small thrill at having a miniscule amount of control over someone else for once, rather than it being the other way around that they are used to, with others telling them what to do and controlling their lives.
It is a terrible reason of course but that is why they do it.
welshconnection@reddit
Quote from the BBC coverage of the incident/ sentencing..
“ The men denied any involvement but, after being found guilty, made admissions to probation officers. Carruthers claimed it was nothing more than "drunken stupidity", while Graham alleged it was his co-accused's "dream" and "show" and he just went along to help. When jailing them for four years and three months each, Mrs Justice Lambert said a full motive was not known but "sheer bravado" and getting a thrill from the outrage were factors. Messages they exchanged in the aftermath showed them revelling in their notoriety, the judge said. In one voicenote, Daniel Graham exclaimed: "It's gone viral, it is worldwide." Newcastle University's Bethany Usher, who specialises in crime journalism, is among those who believe the pair were craving attention.”

Special_Earth_4957@reddit
Because they are cunts.
ChangingMonkfish@reddit
While there are a lot of (accurate) statements along the lines of “because they’re cunts”, it may help to further explain that:
The judge indicated in her comments that it wasn’t clear what the motive was. She suggested however that perhaps it was that they “revelled in the coverage, taking pride in what [they] have done, knowing [they] were responsible for the crime so many people were talking about”. She went on to wonder whether that was the sole reason.
One of the men’s defence barrister has suggested that they were drunk basically: “Unfortunately it is no more than drunken stupidity. It is something he will regret for the rest of his life.”
The prosecution barrister has rejected the “they were just drunk” defence, saying that the planning needed to do this showed a level of pre-meditation that can’t be explained by that, and has suggested it was just “mindless thuggery”.
We’ll probably never actually know because neither of them have ever actually admitted doing it.
So the “because they’re cunts” does ultimately seem to be the right answer, but just thought it worth explaining why we don’t have a better answer unfortunately.

Unfortunately, the evidence seems to indicate it was no more than shortsighted stupidity, some idiots whose idea of 'funny' is at odds with normal human beings.
BryOnRye@reddit
Cunting cunts being cunts.
k0dakku@reddit
Cunts mate
Indigo-Waterfall@reddit
People do weird shit… sometimes it’s hard to understand why a person behaves the way they do. There doesn’t seem any logical reason other than, they wanted to be dicks.
JakeGrey@reddit
In addition to all the previous comments, I would suggest that they'd probably been at the drink as well.

Seven pints and a bag, I'm willing to wager
Interrogatingthecat@reddit
You don't scout ahead for something you choose to do drunk and high
supersayingoku@reddit
It's not reality, mate, just being silly because there are already five hundred "they're cunts" answers in here already
Interrogatingthecat@reddit
Mate, "they were drunk" was literally the main mitigating factors the defence gave
SaltyName8341@reddit
Should have done them for drink driving then too

Knowing how the world/UK is, when they get out in 2 or so years, media will want their story and probs make a tv show/film outta it and those 2 get rich 🤮

No media company would touch them with a barge pole, they'd face a massive boycott

Hopefully but it’s England remember.
quite_acceptable_man@reddit
Because they are morons. Most people will never understand it because we simply can't think down to their level of idiocy and the utter banality of their existences.
geo_yetti@reddit
They did it out of a sense of bravado according to the judge. They called it an operation. One tried to blame on drunken antics the other on his depressive illness. I say we shouldn't loose sight of the fact we loose a huge amount of trees in the amazon every day.
Smooth_News_7027@reddit
I live vaguely nearby and my cousin lives two villages away. The rumour is that one of them was living in a caravan on the outskirts of a village, which didn’t have planning permission. The council got wind so he applied for retroactive permission- and the whole village objected because they’re nimby wankers, essentially. Presumably it was some sort of vengeance.
grantus_maximus@reddit
If that was his way of getting vengeance then I’m with the nimby wankers. Obvs very astute judges of character.
AraiHavana@reddit
Because they were drunken dicks

Dickheads, cunts, assholes, twats, tossers, pillocks or maggots. They did it because they are plonkers.

Some creatures are just wired wrongly, and will never serve any useful purpose. Backward morons, who enjoy destruction for its own sake. I wonder what else they have done, on the sly. May they get the lives they deserve, and may their names and faces be remembered, do that they are pointed at, and shunned.

Guess it's like saying why do murderers kill or why do rapists rape it's because we live in a world where bad things happen all the time. Luckily there are more good people than bad out there but as soon as one of them has perished or put in jail another sprouts up.
New_Line4049@reddit
Because cunts are cunts.
finniruse@reddit
Too stupid to fully comprehend the emotional and cultural impact for people in the region. But also having a small sense that it was important. Living small meaningless lives. Thinking that for a moment this action gave them agency and control in life. That it was a jape.
And then waking up the next day to the cold, hard realisation of pure pure stupidity and the ruination of whatever small joy they had in life. The most hated people in the north east.
Apidium@reddit
They claim it was just drunken foolishness. Which was dismissed by the court who suggested if was a way for them to feel powerful.

Mission-25@reddit
Both of low intelligence and just outright attention seeking criminal behaviour.
They blamed drunkenness whilst going highly prepared and driving to the scene. Just sheer stupidity.

Nobody knows. I doubt even the idiots who did it know why they did it. It seems they did it for a laugh but definitely weren't expecting to get 4 years for it.
AnneKnightley@reddit
Some people are just twats - they think it’s funny and don’t care that they’re destroying a historical natural area.
OddlyDown@reddit
As people have said, some people just love making others miserable for no ‘reward’ other than that.
The tree was a famous example, but we see lesser examples every day. For example, in my town a kids playground had equipment torched that had only been there less than a week. It will take many months to be replaced because councils are stretched as it is. Unlike the tree it can be replaced, but why they do it is similar.
I can understand crime for profit, even if I don’t like it. Crimes like this though, just to make people sad? Some people are just scum.
Dissidant@reddit
Just your everyday "this is why we can't have nice things" though they took it up a notch
I love some of the old trees we have, the area I grew up had one by the beach but when revisiting I found out they had to cut it down because some prat set it on fire with a BBQ
DrH1983@reddit
I'll echo the already expressed sentiments that they're cunts. Joyless, miserable cunts with sad pathetic lives
shakesfistatmoon@reddit
This is it. There’s research that shows that young men who turn to mindless vandalism or violence do it because they were brought up in troubled homes (no love or role models), are thick as mince, don’t know how to behave, don’t have anything in their lives because they have no skills (social or work) and so no control over anything. The only control they can exert is over an inanimate object or someone weaker than them. That’s how they get their kicks. When they are caught they turn into cowards trying to blame everyone but themselves. You’re right, they truly are pathetic. And the sad thing is they probably don’t have the metal capacity to realise what they did.
WoodenPresence1917@reddit
filbert94@reddit
They're cunts
No_Preference9093@reddit
The honest answer is nobody knows. They haven’t really offered a good explanation. It’s probably just ‘because they can’ and ‘because it seemed like a good idea at the time’.
HoraceorDoris@reddit
Because they are misunderstood and want to draw attention to themselves, so everyone can see they’re what family members describe as “a couple of rogues” who “love their mum” and “wouldn’t harm anyone” /s
I think the consensus here is accurate. They are just a couple of mouth breathing cunts!
JoeDaStudd@reddit
From what I've read they were pissed at the council/government for not granting them planning permission.\ That coupled with being general cunts, seeking attention and alcohol/drugs lead them to do it.
Basically a big attention seeking fuck you by a pair of drunk cunts.
Porkchop_Express99@reddit
They're what we'd call 'rough' people.
One trait of people like this is they are often the sorts who like to damage, smash, take away things that are nice or mean something to others.
Often for no reason, possibly their own amusement. Like when you read stories about children's playgrounds or charity centres that get trashed.
Tuftygirl12@reddit

dylsreddit@reddit
Speaking as someone who lives in a very remote part of Northern England, it's unfortunately very common to come across drink drivers.
Exact_Setting9562@reddit
If we believe their drunken alibi - yeah - but they didn't get stopped unfortunately.
Flatulent_Weasel@reddit
Why? Simply because they're fucking idiots.
Working-Hat4932@reddit
Basically sad 2 drunks bellends who have no purpose in life thought it would be 'a laugh'.
BobBobBobBobBobDave@reddit
They denied it in court and police interviews, so no explanation ever given.
One of their lawyers did suggest in mitigation that they were drunk and it was a dumb idea.
We don't know the details though, because only they know and they won't talk about it.
VerbingNoun413@reddit
Was the lawyer drunk when they suggested that? Intoxication is not a mitigating factor- if anything it can be aggravating.
BobBobBobBobBobDave@reddit
I am just going on this report. In fairness, it doesn't actually say he said it in mitigation, so...

Ceejayncl@reddit
Because they are utter fucking cunts who will never achieve anything more than cutting down an iconic and historic tree. Honestly, this is the greatest achievement either of them will ever achieve, and there is a country full of tossers like them whose greatest achievement, is the crime they committed to go to jail.
mhoulden@reddit
They were arseholes.

I believe it was because they could and it would upset people.
Sone people feed off upsetting others, and the more they upset; the better they feel.
Negative_Ad596@reddit
I live about a 50 minute drive from Sycamore Gap and can say that many in these parts share your dismay at the senselessness of it. I have followed press accounts of the case with interest. It seems that these two men were unique and not representative of the vast majority of sensible-minded people. They seems to have been an element of seeking notoriety to offset the utter meaningless of their lives. This, coupled with a total lack of appreciation of what that tree was worth to so many people emotionally and culturally connected to it, led to this sad event.
