If so, what sort of foods do you eat on a standard week?
prustage@reddit
Breakfast - Oats with chopped fruit with a glass of real fruit juice, coffee
Lunch - toasted wholemeal granary bread with either sardines, brisling, scrambled eggs, poached eggs, grilled mushrooms or baked beans, strong tea
Dinner - lightly fried salmon steaks, swordfish steaks or tuna steaks with new potatoes, broccoli, spinach and a fresh salad with vinaigrette, glass of claret.
After any of those I might have a desert of either Kefir, Greek Yogurt or Fruit salad
One day a week I break all the rules and have something just self indulgent. Its usually Lamb Danzak with Pilau Rice, and Garlic Naan followed by biscuits with Stilton, Brie and Double Gloucester.
I rarely snack but if I do its usually a rice-cake with Marmite or Damson Jam.
anabsentfriend@reddit
I usually have seven or more portions of fruit/veg a day. But I am also partial to more carbs than I should eat. So usually I eat healthily, but not entirely.
Party-Werewolf-4888@reddit
I think i eat well. I eat a good variety of lentils, beans, veggies and i try to push myself to be adventurous with food and try new meals.
I don't eat meat or fish and avoid most animal products, although I don't quite call myself vegan. I consume a good amount of protein and fibre each day despite this. My last lot of bloods from the GP showed that I had exceptionally high levels of b12 and iron, which is funny considering my mother always insists I must be deficient.
However I do enjoy a good binge drink and I love crisps. Could wat 6 packs a day no problem.
sniffing_dog@reddit
I'm the worst eater, I have nothing til 11pm
zannnn@reddit
Breakfast just a coffee. Lunch sourdough + ham & cheese but try and alternate with tuna & avocado to have less processed meats. Afternoon coffee and maybe snacks like frozen grapes. Dinner usually 300g of chicken breast or minced meat + carbs like air fries chips + veg tomato & cucumber salad. Dessert 225g of yogurt + raspberries + blueberries + honey & granola sometimes.
Feels pretty healthy. Alternative the dinners a lot. Only eat out once or twice a week.
No_Atmosphere1852@reddit
I think we need to be clearer with what we're talking about here. Healthy depends too much on an individual's circumstances.
Is the food I eat nutritious? Broadly yes. It's got lots of vegetables and grains in it. But not a wide variety of either. All my cooking is swimming in olive oil as well. Does that mean it's not healthy?
Or do we mean simply that it's fattening? And then, how much is that a direct factor in my health?
I very much don't have the answers.
Unusual_Resident_784@reddit
does rib eye steak, two fried eggs and triple cooked beef dripping chips count as healthy? because that's what I had tonight.
pancetta and peas spaghetti tommorow night and pork steaks and rice on Wednesday with a fresh pizza (crosta molica) on Thursday.
bear in mind I only eat one meal a day but my meals through the week generally go something like this.
I don't eat steak every week mind because the cost of beef has gotten ridiculous.
Additional_Snow3917@reddit
I've always aimed for my 5 portions of fruit or veg every day and cook most of our meals myself except for the occasional fish fingers and oven chips but in recent years I've been eating even more fruit & veg and less meat. I'm also aware that gut health is important to maintain so I make my own Kimchi, yoghurt etc. I just want to add that these people who say they eat unhealthy without a care in the world will most likely suffer as a result. They say life's too short blah blah but I've seen old school friends (now in their mid 50's) who've aged badly and have illnesses all because of bad diets.
Sulvano@reddit
I think I eat healthily. I have porridge, peanut butter, banana and blueberries every morning. Usually 4 eggs and veg for dinner. Usually a balanced veggie meal for tea.
Lots of Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, nuts etc.
I actively avoid heavily processed food.
I feel good for it and really enjoy what I eat.
BuzBuz28@reddit (OP)
Sounds similar to me. What’s your cheat/naughty meal if you feel like one on the weekend?
Sulvano@reddit
Hmm I love making Indian and BIR food. I’d probably make a paneer Karahi or a Birmingham style Balti of some form. Or sometimes just a good old home made pizza with lots of veg and salad. What about yourself?
Additional_Snow3917@reddit
Mine would be a homemade curry but which Balti recipe do you use? I bought some Balti pans but I'm yet to use them.
BaBaFiCo@reddit
Fairly healthy. Couple of eggs for breakfast. Tuna salad for lunch. Then a home cooked dinner of something like Thai curry or chilli for dinner.
PKblaze@reddit
Somewhat. I usually eat twice a day with the odd snack. Breakfast is a must and then I usually just have a big meal in the day. I generally get at least 3 a day in and typically eat more lean foods like chicken and fish or meat substitutes/tofu. I mainly drink juice, water and some kind of milk substitute.
forgottenpopcork@reddit
I know I don’t. I eat what’s cheap or not at all.
BuzBuz28@reddit (OP)
I find that my healthier meals are the cheapest. Lots of veg (cheaper meats etc). I avoid sauces in jars. Ready meals appear cheap but are more expensive than bulk cooking a veggie pasta or something similar
nsthj@reddit
this is just an excuse people use. they wont listen
although it's nice to have lots of protein and that is quite expensive
nsthj@reddit
healthy is cheap...
ClarifyingMe@reddit
No I don't, I forget to eat multiple times a week.
BuzBuz28@reddit (OP)
Why do you forget?
ClarifyingMe@reddit
I have poor interoception which means it's harder for me to translate in my brain "this bodily thing you're feeling is hunger so you should eat" and I have poor executive functioning skills which means when I finally realise that I am hungry or just haven't eaten, I am then stuck sometimes for hours transitioning to moving to cook. So I eat late a lot and often only one meal. It's the same issue for drinking water but I try really hard with this due to my medication.
External prompts from friends and family is very helpful, working in the office helped a lot, and living in only one floor dwellings kind of helped.
Weary_Bat2456@reddit
I don't eat healthy throughout the day IMO, but for breakfast I have muesli with milk which I'd say is healthy.
1968Bladerunner@reddit
I try for a balance between good & bad, & walk regularly to counter the latter as much as possible.
I don't smoke or do drugs, & alcohol is rare, so food treats are my only real vice, but I do have great self-control - i.e. can happily eat a solitary chunk of a Galaxy bar a day & put the remainder back in the fridge!
____JustBrowsing@reddit
Absolutely do not eat healthily.
chickengenes@reddit
no way, i eat like shit lol, eat just pure junk then i go 24+ hours without eating then repeat
BuzBuz28@reddit (OP)
Why do you think this is? Is this purely down to choice as your prefer unhealthy food?
chickengenes@reddit
tastes good, but also i have afrid so my palette is pretty limited
i like some fruits but theyre unpredictable, some are soft some are hard some are too wet and some are too dry, processed food is always the same so i dont have to worry about them being different
One-Prior3480@reddit
Fairly healthy except for Friday night chippy tea. But the rest of the week’s meals are cooked from scratch. Loads of veg, lentils, chickpeas, tofu, quorn. Have wholemeal pasta and brown rice if we’re having either which is generally once a week. Ice cream one evening a week, no other desserts or sweet treats usually. Booze once a week.
BuzBuz28@reddit (OP)
Absolutely love a Friday night chippy tea, something I’ll never give up
One-Prior3480@reddit
Same. Every couple of months I declare I’m going to be healthier and lose weight and supportive husband suggests we could have chippy tea every other week, or have smaller portions of chips. At which point without fail my answer is ‘well, let’s not go crazy!’
Distinct-Lion4658@reddit
To put it this way: I genuinely think I would've contracted scurvy by now if it wasn't thanks to the fortnightly kiwi I have
BuzBuz28@reddit (OP)
You know what they say… a kiwi a fortnight keeps the doctor away
nsthj@reddit
mostly. i upped my protien to 150grams today, and feel amazing..
also, maybe it's better to eat breakfast as the big meal of the day
Legitimate_Finger_69@reddit
No.
Life is to short to eat healthily if that entails cutting out the processed crap. Eat lots of vegetables, but also eat lots of pork pies and cake. Exercise enough that you don't start getting moisture sores from too many skin folds.
Cook at home, healthy food can be good but it's better with cheese on top.
I can't believe any of the weirdos who are obsessed about calories and stuff are very happy. Life must be rubbish if you feel guilty when eating an entire "sharing" bag of crisps or you give a fuck about sinning to Weight Watchers.
nsthj@reddit
im very happy with myself. ive got lean and i look like a god amongst mere men
i counted for like, 1 month in the start, now i know about what calories things are without thinking much at all
FrostedDrift1862@reddit
I respect anyone’s opinion because their lifestyle is individual to them, but I don’t follow that premise.
I weight 90kg, 30% body fat feeling and looking like shit. I struggled walking, poor sleep and what the real driving factor was going to a children’s hospital due to having a disabled nephew and seeing these children who were born with these horrible disabilities and illnesses. I felt so disgustEd by how I lived my life that I decided to turn my life around.
I am 30kg lighter, 15% bf. I walk 10000+ steps a day, run 3miles each day weight lift, lost 10 inches on my weight, have a very healthy relationship with food and love cooking. Not to mention physically I feel more attractive.
I’ve never been happier and more excited for my future simply by doing this.
you talk about life being too short, but what quality of life is being overweight, out of breathe, diabetes and and poor health.
billons is spent on obesity by the Uk and 70% of adults are a combination of overweight/obese. Enjoy food but in moderation
Legitimate_Finger_69@reddit
If you were doing fewer than 10k steps before then that is the problem. I'm not saying scoff as much food as you like if the most activity you do each day is walking from your car to the sofa. I'm saying it's unhelpful to be so obsessed about eating healthily that you then feel guilty for eating anything with more calories than a carrot.
People who are inactive will feel like shit anyway, your body needs exercise.
FrostedDrift1862@reddit
Personally dieting is a bigger factor than exercising. 10000 steps burns about 500cal for me which is ruined by two Aldi triple choc chip cookies. a 12 inch pizza would take me a marathon to burn it off.
This countries knowledge on food is shocking. too many cheap takeaways, tired and sedentary jobs and unhealthy foods smashed down our faces. First think you go when walking into Lidl, their tasty bakery filled with buttery and sugary goodness. Great for dopamine but adds on quickly when not mindful
Sulvano@reddit
I’ve never counted calories. I eat healthy. I absolutely indulge.
Emotional-Start7994@reddit
I'll have oats for breakfast and a chicken salad for lunch.
Then go out at night and sink 12 pints of Guinness.
So yes totally healthy.
BuzBuz28@reddit (OP)
Lots of iron in the Guinness, could be worse
bilbosfrodo@reddit
Depends. I eat shit, gain weight. Pizza, crisps, burgers, chips. Think o no im fat again. Then, lose weight. Porrige, ham, eggs, chicken, salad. Think, that's nice. I've dropped all that weight. Let's put it on again, and the cycle continues. I gym 3 times a week. I run 3 times a week. When I gain, it's a long process. When I lose, it's a short process.
BuzBuz28@reddit (OP)
Out of interest, how come you struggle to find a balance? For example, healthy eating 5 days a week and cheat meals on the 6th and 7th days
bilbosfrodo@reddit
That's a very good question. The problem is my running. I get injured when I up my miles, so then I stop and gain weight. And then once recovered I healthy eat or eat better and lose it. This has been the case for about 2 years. But I think i fixed the issue now. I have overpronation and end up with bad shin splints, so now I've found the right running shoes (touch wood) i should be able to keep at it and have a better balanced diet. Which will consist of healthy eating and bad eating and weight should be ok. I do count my calories when im injury free.
absolutelyshafted84@reddit
80 percent of the time yes . Trying to lose some belly fat before I go on hols. Massively cut down carbs , more protein keeps me full longer, less snacking.
Worryguts49@reddit
No. I eat the way I always have, mainly pies, mince ,chips, sausages, cheese and fish. Potatoes mashed with butter, and onions, fried, are my vegetables. That diet makes me feel good and I enjoy eating. If it's unhealthy, well, that's the price of happiness.
BuzBuz28@reddit (OP)
Interesting that you say it makes you feel good. This food makes me feel good whilst eating it but the compounding effects make me feel shit… tired, sluggish etc. don’t get me wrong, I’d choose to eat this food all the time if I could, however, I’d feel like shite if I did
ToffeePoppet@reddit
I think I do. I really changed my diet a little over a year ago, prior to that I ate home cooked fairly healthy evening meals but ate too much ultra processed rubbish during the day.
I had a problem with my back which really made me think about what my old age would be like if I didn’t start treating my body better. For me that meant eating better, losing weight and making myself stronger.
Today I ate grapes, raspberries, strawberries, Greek yoghurt, granola, mixed nuts, lentil and carrot soup, sourdough bread, peanut butter, celery, cucumber, a pear, baked potato, homemade stew, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, green beans, baby corn, butter, cherries. 13.6 portions and fruit and veg.
Last night we had salmon, the night before homemade lasagne. We often have bolognaise, chilli, curry, pizza, chicken legs, roast dinners, lasagne. I just try to eat whole foods as much as possible.
beneyh@reddit
Yes I’d say so, the Mrs and I are quite good at structuring a week with what we want to eat for lunches and dinner. When I’m away for work I probably eat better as we have a chef to cook for us for each race week
BuzBuz28@reddit (OP)
What do you do for work?
beneyh@reddit
I’m a filmmaker in mountain biking
BuzBuz28@reddit (OP)
Damn, sounds like a great job. I love mountain biking and doing it for work AND a chef, pretty dreamy
beneyh@reddit
Yeah I’m very lucky. Keep having to remind myself that flying around the world every week and everything paid for is not remotely normal and I have very little to complain about 😂
MrBonayy@reddit
Yes I like to think I eat healthily.
Always vegetables, nuts, fruit.. nothing processed, I cook my own meals and stay away from crap food
But I'm a raging alcoholic so
Amazing-Rooster1961@reddit
I know i eat far healthier than I did in my teena & early 20s & thats good enough for me. What I specifically eat is for breakfast ill have - Greek yoghurt, strawberries, blueberries, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, honey & a cup of tea. Lunch I'll either have sone sort of sandwich or wrap. Dinner or night time food ill have - Falafel, spring onion, carrots, peppers with thousands island & honey mustard. A cup of tea & 2 Stroopwafels. If i snack ill eat either a kind bar or some pieces of mango. That's my average food everyday
BuzBuz28@reddit (OP)
Sounds tasty
ZeroCool5577@reddit
Dinners are home cooked and breakfast is cereal and fruit so I think mostly but I love chocolate
Twolef@reddit
I do now but only because I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Don’t be me folks, eat more vegetables and less beige.
Live-Guidance7244@reddit
I have healthy meals and I drink lots of water but I just love snacking on sweet treats. Since having my daughter nearly 2 years ago my sweet tooth has been insane
AmphibianNo8598@reddit
Probably not
togtogtog@reddit
Yeah.
I like fruit and veg, so eat loads of them. I also eat meat, dairy, eggs, fish, shellfish, vegetarian food etc.
I don't drink much alcohol, and I minimise snacks. Not much of my food is processed; it tastes weird to me - I guess I'm just not used to whatever it is that they add to it?
I don't have any rules - I just eat what I fancy. If there is free cake available, then I eat it!
EnoughYesterday2340@reddit
Meals yes, snacks and dessert no. I love a biscuit. Love a cake. Sweet treat after lunch AND dinner is a must.
HoraceDerwent@reddit
Eggs or oatmeal for breakfast
some kind of meat in a wrap with salad vegetables for lunch or an omelette if I had the oatmeal for breakfast.
chicken, steak, fish or prawns with green vegetables and potato or sweet potato for dinner.
desert or snack would be fresh fruit or frozen fruit mixed with Greek yoghurt.
Pretty straightforward and cheap. You can get big bags of frozen veg and potatoes last ages. Freeze the meat you don't need to use that day.
the only things I need to buy regularly are the eggs, cheese and salad vegetables.
Candid-Bike-9165@reddit
I just finished a cheap frozen pizza for dinner....might have a chocolate bar later for supper
Legitimate_Finger_69@reddit
Snap a frozen pizza in half, chuck it in the air fryer for preheat plus two minutes at 200°C, then cook the other half whilst you eat the first.
Sod AI, that's useful technology. Hot pizza in seven minutes for 20 seconds work.
sbiel001@reddit
I try to as much as possible but it can be tough. For breakfast I have one of: fruit & veggie smoothie, oats with fruit, or eggs cooked with veggies. Lunches and dinners I try to home cook, majority veggies, sometimes fish or chicken. I like to make soups, salads, stews, curries, stir fried veg with plant based, low processed carbs, maybe a small amount of red meat to flavour it. Sometimes I'll air fry a quick veggie burger or sausages, or have some veggie airfry bites. I like to buy the brand "bowls" for easy, healthy ready meals in the week. For smacks I try to stick with tortilla chips or carrots and hummus. But it can be tough and if work is busy I slip into ordering out a few times a week or eating meal deals. But I've had to cut out dairy and gluten so it does limit options a lot. Drinking is where I struggle to be healthy tbh.
Healthy-Meaning468@reddit
Sure, probably 3 or 4 meals (lunches or dinner) are fish, veggies with every meal and protein to vary between meats, the fish mentioned and things like chickpeas or lentils. Also have cheeky meals or takeaways but largely doing okay.
