Are football colors openly worn on the Tube? (Yank asking)

I've followed a London football(didn't say "soccer")club since visiting the city back in 2006 and NBC(an American network) made the EPL available to us. I'm going to my first EPL match in August with my teenage son and I was wondering what we should know about going to a match. If my son wears a club jersey on the tube from the middle of London out to the stop near the stadium, is that asking for violence, ridicule, or merely being labeled an clueless American? FYI, I actually try to be polite and speak in a low voice when visiting Europe.

It depends a little on which club and where you're travelling (and if you're the home or away fan). If you're the home fan, the train will be packed full of people wearing shirts.

I'm a home fan, but the tube station I'm starting from is Picadilly, where I figure to cross paths with supporters of other London clubs.

You'll be completely fine. The Piccadilly line train to Arsenal will be 90% Arsenal Fans at least.
Have a good time.
Broric@reddit
You'll be fine. Which match?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce928nmz884o for a heartwarming story about an american who accidentally became a proper football fan. And wear the shirt on the tube- it's fine. Have fun!

It is both normal and an invite for rival fans to give you verbal.
Does not always have to end in violence, that's a myth.
cloche_du_fromage@reddit
Don't stress it. London is generally very safe unless go looking for trouble.

thanks

That’s the key thing, just don’t annoy anyone and you you’ll see no trouble
ResplendentBear@reddit
You got so close, then you called it a jersey.
Assuming it's a home game, the tube will be filled with people wearing football shirts also going to the game. How do you think people get there?
If, which seems unlikely, you're going as an away fan you might get some "banter" but I wouldn't expect violence at all.

Sorry, I crossed up American football terminology(jersey). Is "kit" the full uniform or can a shirt be referred to as "kit'? I almost used kit in the OP.
NewStroma@reddit
It's just a shirt. Kit implies shorts, socks and shirt and if you're not actually playing football or a child, it's only used in the context of a "full kit wanker".
Mdl8922@reddit
You'll be fine mate, plenty wear colours on the tube. A kid certainly will be absolutely fine.
TimeToGo77@reddit (OP)
thanks
Aggressive_Milk3@reddit
You'll be totally fine. Also it's very considerate of you to speak in a low voice when visiting here but truly as long as you're not supremely obnoxious your normal voice will be just fine. London is hugely multicultural city and for the most part everyone rubs along fine together, there isn't anything to worry about.

thanks

Yeah anyone wearing a football shirt will get murdered sorry

I sincerely appreciate your attempt at dissuading 2 more Yanks from visting the U.K. Thank you for your response.
